In the midst of this crazy thing we call life, it's all too easy to lose sight of what's really important. I call this phenomenon, "Straying away from who you really are." Now in MY life, there are a few things that have worked to get me a one way ticket back to "who I really am." One of those things is meditation (courtesy of Brainsync & Dr. Deepak Chopra). Another one of those things is fitness, though it's more of a complementing side dish rather than a main course. The last is communing with nature. The first way I like to commune with nature (and is the most convenient) is by walking out of my house barefoot and heading straight for the ocean which is about a 30 second walk from my front door .... But sometimes it can get old (and cold) when Barbie Six-Pack is screaming nearby reminding me that if I turn my head around, there's still a concrete utopia awaiting my precious time, energy & hard earned money. Another way I like to commune with nature is by immersing myself into the forest. Unfortunately, Hermosa Beach doesn't have an available forest for me to go all hippie in, so that's when I turn to the Greenbelt. With it's lush trees and wood chip path, it's butterflies, birds and blooming flowers in an array of colors, it's fresh scent of pine and nectar, it really is the next best thing to the forest. We really enjoyed our twilight drive here and later, our walks, along Ardmore, from Hermosa Beach. The sun was going down in that cloud-piercing way that happens in California coastal towns, a kind of heightened periwinkle blue sky with the beams breaking through the marine layer like a welding torch. I loved the outlines of the buildings on the hill, growing darker and looking more like London chimney tops. This part of Hermosa reminds me of San Francisco. The path is made of soft wood chips. We ran here once and it's one of the best running paths we've found in L.A.. Genuinely friendly to your knees, unlike some paths which are composed of a thin layer of dirt over pavement. read more

I'm new to the south bay and had heard about the The Hermosa Valley Greenbelt Trail (often referred to as "the wood chip trail") between Ardmore and Valley, but had never run it until this week. What a great place to exercise! Overall the fresh ocean air mixed with the pine scent of the wood chips makes you feel like you're running in a forest by the beach, not between two major city streets. The trees and greenery along the sides mostly block the view of the street anyway, so you feel far removed from the city and a little closer to nature. There are exercise equipment stations every mile or so, which adds a fun way to break up your run, as well as benches and water fountains along the way. The soft ground makes running much easier on your knees but prepare to get little wood slivers and rocks in your shoes. Mornings: I felt like I had the trail to myself! Most of the people out on the trail were dog walkers, who were few and far between. The joggers I crossed paths with were typically quiet and a few exchanged "good mornings" and small smiles with me. Very peaceful and quiet and a great way to start the day. Evenings: It's a little more crowded with the after-work crowd, and seems to be the place to run and "be seen" by the attractive Manhattan/Hermosa crowd. I've only run in the summer and it's been light out until 8, so I'm not sure how well lit the path is at night. I wouldn't advise running this in the dark/ at night due to the fact that its so removed and hidden from the street and I'd be nervous about that. The Greenbelt is a great trail for people looking for a brisk walk, a nice jog, or an opportunity to get in some mileage. The Greenbelt is a stretch of wood chip and dirt that runs from Manhattan Beach through Hermosa Beach. There are several PROs to this stretch of land: 1. There are 1/4 mile markers, so you're constantly aware of how far you've traveled. 2. There are only dog walkers and joggers/runners here, so there aren't people there to mess around. I used to train at Almansor Park in Alhambra which hosted couples making out in the middle of the walking/running path, a lady hoola-hooping as she's walking, and little kids running into my knees on their scooters. None of that here. 3. The trail is in the middle of, but clear from, traffic. The CONs to this place: 1. If you run after sundown, it isn't very well lit. 2. The wood chips and dirt path could induce sprained ankles if you're not careful. 3. I ran across a live skunk on that path - scared the crap out of me when I saw its tail go up and point it's rear at me. So, while the mile markers will indicate that the path is 7.5 miles long [3 3/4 mile each way], my Garmin shows that, if you run from the Fry's parking lot, all the way down the trail, and back, you cover 7.8 miles' distance - perfect for half-marathon and marathon preparation/training. I'm glad I found this gem in the midst of the craziness of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. You'll find me out here at least once a week, training for my next run. read more

I was originally going to write this AFTER my second run but since I don't want to forget my thoughts, I thought I'd just edit if anything. So, Greenbelt Park. It's actually the only trail I'd run on outdoors to be honest. Being young you'd think I could pound the pavement mile after mile after mile and feel great after but alas, my knees. They hate me...at least with the concrete. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the trail which is VERY WELL maintained is dirt and covered with these wood chips. Yes, I'll admit they could trip you at some point (ONLY MAYBE if you don't look where you run) but it really makes it much easier on the knees. I was out here at around 7am and there are already a lot of people walking dogs and going for their morning run so I don't worry too much about no one hearing me in case I start yelling for help. I started at the Frys on Rosecrans and Sepulveda. I have yet to reach the other end of the trail, maybe when my legs have recuperated. There's plenty of shade, benches and water fountains. And yes, the water is clean. They also have some water dishes for dog owners and their four-legged companions. The park does require you to leash you dog though. People you meet on the trail are very nice, everyone smiles at everyone else! View of the ocean is amazing once you close in on Downtown Manhattan. Houses that surround the trail are nice to look at too. Lots of things to keep your mind off the distance and the lactic acid build up in your legs! There are markers about every quarter mile, they'll either be at your left or right. Speaking of which, make sure to look both ways every time you cross as well! The trail gets cut at a few intersections with lights. Good for walking, jogging, running. Even marathon training as one way is about 3.5 miles. ;) read more

Not having gym membership, I have to give high marks to any park that has a bar I can use for chin-ups/pull-ups. (The bars are at Valley & 8th.) There are also other workout type stations along the trail for those looking for a whole body workout. Extra points! You can run along the wood chip trail and not strain anything. Extra points! This park is beautiful! I love coming here for runs or walks. There are workout type stations, water fountains, and mile markers along the trail. The trail consists of wood chips, which makes the run a little more difficult, but it's better for your knees. The trail is surrounded by trees and bushes, so you don't even notice the traffic or cars on the either side. It's never too crowded, and the scenery just makes your run/walk so peaceful. This is a great trail for walkers and joggers alike. It is very well maintained and has plenty of trash cans, water fountains and benches. The trees make for good shade and block out the view of the street which is an added bonus. You feel like you are in middle of a forest!!!! The only drawback is the intersections of the streets can get a little confusing as there are not always crosswalks. otherwise, this is the perfect place to get some fresh air. read more

During the month of March to May, I would walk the entire belt with a friend or by myself and then take a break at the Manhattan Beach pier, before it gets too hot, we turn back and walk all the way home. When I walk with my younger son, we like to take the meandering side trails which branching in and out of the green belt, checking the details of the various fauna and flora along the way. Wouldn't be able to live without it. Ideal for running or walking. Lots of shade, benches and a couple of workout stations. Surprisingly, it's never really busy and has become my favorite running ground given the summer crowd on the strand. The only downside is the need to cross some streets while running but the locals are usually very cool and give me the right of way most of the time. read more

Walk / Jog / Run for miles along the wide and cushy mulched path through the shade of trees and foliage all around. Distances are marked every quarter mile with lots of benches, workout stations, water fountains, and dog poop bag stations (but often empty) along the way. Loads of people walk their dogs here (including me) and most responsibly pick up after their dogs, but some are a bit more careless so you might want to pay attention where you step. read more

This is a great place to run and exercise! The path is surrounded by trees and vegetation so you get a mild wilderness feel to it. Along the path there are benches to sit on and people watch and there are little workout areas spread out along the path equipped with pull up bars and even drinking fountains. If you want to change up the environment you can always head west off the path for about a quarter mile and you will hit the strand and the beach. The only reason why I give it 4 stars is because you have to cross some streets so you have to sometime wait for cars or in some cases dodge cars but other then that this is a very nice spot to get a jog in. read more

Where the locals go to jog and walk their dogs. I went at 8 a.m. on a weekday and it was poppin' (but not crowded)! A wood chip trail, complete with benches, trash cans, doggie poopie bags, distance markers, drinking fountains, and fitness equipment to do push-ups/crunches/pull-ups/stretches/etc. on. Great joint-friendly alternative to jogging on concrete or pavement. There was also plenty of street parking when I went, and you can also park at Valley Park, which is right next to it. If you live in the neighborhood, you should definitely check it out. HOWEVER. I personally had a "meh" experience. It might just be me, but I didn't think jogging here was worth the morning traffic I had to endure on Artesia. I like jogging at parks because of the scenery and the peace and quiet. But since Greenbelt Park is basically just a trail that runs between two streets, all you hear are cars zooming past you as you run. The streets are surprisingly busy, considering it's a residential neighborhood. There are also piles of rotting vegetative mulsh dispersed along the trail for some reason, and while they're comfy under the foot, they let out enormous wafts of rotting-vegetative-mulsh SMELL when you step into them... either you love it or hate it. People with weak ankles (like me, apparently) need to be careful because the relatively soft, uneven, and lumpy trail may be the ideal place for ankle sprains... although no one else there seemed to be bothered by it, so again, maybe it's just me. I came away with a bunch of wood chips and splinters in my shoes and socks, and I actually had to stop in my tracks a couple times to pick out the wood. Kinda defeats the purpose of endurance training. But really, if you live near by, there isn't any reason not to at least take a stroll along this unique trail/park. read more

I love jogging and walking on the greenbelt. The mile markers make it great if you're tracking your distance, and it helps that there are water fountains placed every-so-often. Plus in some areas it feels like you're in a forrest. LOVE IT read more

We live right on the belt, so to say. It's beautiful, relaxing, well kept, pet-friendly, and frequented by all. The very young to the young at heart. Lots of joggers but also lots of strollers... both the rolling and the walking type. Especially during spring, the plants are all blooming and it becomes a beautiful painting. read more

My knees can't take running on pavement anymore so I've started running here. Running on wood chips is much easier on the knees. Plus you can't beat the beautiful scenery and friendly smiles of other joggers, dog walkers, and exercisers. So much better than running on a treadmill, literally running to nowhere. Most of the reviews here talked about running on the chips on the Greenbelt. I find it's also helpful for experiencing the "Zen" one gets from being outside in nature in a soothing environment. Great place to walk, or just to sit on the numerous benches along its length. Your canine friend will love it as well - they even have "doggy bags" should you forget to bring one. All in all, a great place to walk, people watch, or just get in touch with nature. Nice to have some greenery in the middle of our built-up beach cities. read more

I absolutely love running here. Great woodchip path. It really is an oasis - very tranquil and relaxing. This is a great segment in a Manhattan/Hermosa Beach run because you can have two totally different experiences - run here in the shade of trees along a trail, and then move west to run along the Strand looking at the ocean. I do wish parts of this were better lit at night. Through reading helpful Yelp reviews I've learned that the entire pathway is around 7.75 miles in length round-trip from 190th/Herondo in Redondo to the Fry's on Sepulveda. This will come in handy when I'm doing my half marathon training this winter, so thanks, fellow Yelpers! read more

A quiet little oasis in the midst of a sometimes way-too-busy beach town. Think of this space, (about two miles long from MB- HB border), as your own personal sanctuary, it never seems crowded, even though there's usually always people nearby. Jog, walk, or merely sit and reflect/decompose-it's all good. Secret Tip: the city doesn't use fertilizer or any chemicals on any of the plants or foliage there, only recycled water,so it's ultra canine friendly. read more
