The baked goods are very dear both in cost and taste. I got some of the best lemon pound cake to celebrate freedom of speech. I felt old because the cashier didn't know what a post card is but I found some nearby at Left Bank Books and besides I am old.

People here don't just like it--they lose their minds over it. I've witnessed stampedes toward the deli case that would make Black Friday look like a polite book club. Mention you've had better and you'll be shunned harder than someone who double-dips at a garden party. The thing is... the chicken salad is fine. Solid, even. But I've made better at home, barefoot in pajama pants, with a jar of mayo that was flirting with its expiration date. Shopping here feels like you've been invited into a members-only grocery lodge. The produce is flawless, the cheese selection could make a Parisian weep, and every item has a backstory worthy of a TED Talk. You're not just buying bread--you're procuring a "heritage grain boule, hand-shaped by sun-kissed artisans during a waxing moon." That wedge of cheese? It's from a small goat named Gerald who only eats lavender and listens to classical music. Of course, this level of "curated grocery chic" comes at a cost. I left with a bag the size of a throw pillow and a receipt that looked suspiciously like my car payment. But the place is immaculate, the staff is gracious, and the people-watching is world-class--equal parts country club and culinary cult meeting. Bottom line: Come for the spectacle, marvel at the devotion to chicken salad, and if you're feeling dangerous... casually say, "I think I've had better" and watch civilization collapse in the dairy aisle.

I was happy to find some fantastic canned cold brews as well, so I was covered with my "coffee before the real coffee" the next morning. I might have a problem. The vibe in here is good when you walk in, a little weird towards the back. I'm not sure if part of the back was open or storage, it got darker and more isolated. There were tons of other snacks and a lot of Asian specialty items as well. Nice to have a store anchored in a busier area and near the university. I will definitely pop in here again if staying in the Loop.

United Provisions has turned into decent place to stop for a quick snack. When I stopped by last week, I bought 2 tornado relief fundraising mystery snack boxes. What a nice idea and so nicely presented. My cat enjoyed sitting on the wrapping paper. I've only unboxed one (the other is a gift). I don't want to spoil the mystery here, but I will add that I was a little disappointed that there were no chips or crackers in the box. However, the box value seemed quite good.

I've never been to prison, but that food seemed to me like what would be served in one. Awful industrial meatballs in a bad sauce. Pork that they called "burnt ends." That was the worst. They weren't burnt ends, but cubes of shoulder that had never seen fire. They tasted spoiled. They were not this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnt_ends "Boneless wings," which are merely pieces of breast cut in wing shapes for the eggnurnt masses. These were breaded and sauced, again with a bad BBQ sauce, which made the breading all soggy. The toasted ravioli was dry and hard, and the sauce was nothing like it should be. It was as sweet as Prego pasta sauce. Just icky. Note: I've used the word, "bad," because this is a *family* website. https://www.dierbergs.com/item/mini-appetizer-meatballs-holiday-appetizers-99990109 https://www.dierbergs.com/item/double-smoked-pork-burnt-ends-245052 https://www.dierbergs.com/item/boneless-breaded-chicken-wings-holiday-appetizers-99990108 https://www.dierbergs.com/item/toasted-ravioli-holiday-appetizers-99990088 I even like this store. The meat is good, and the quality of the produce is great, but their prepared foods are just bad.
