Good news / bad news. The good: Ordered a Rachael (pastrami ruben) on rye to go. It was huge and very tasty. The meat was mostly small pieces (instead of slices), which was a little disappointing, but it tasted great and would highly recommend it. A favorite old haunt, we moved about a half hour away a few years ago and have missed it greatly. Today we were surprisingly without commitments so we decided to drive in to Carl's for our favorite sandwiches. We all opted for hot pastrami, the teenager and I had it on a poppyseed bagel, my husband in an onion roll. Oh, that first bite is heaven! Service was quick, we must have timed it just right, but even when the line snakes around the room it's still worth it. The ambiance? Well, it's a straight up corner deli, so, yeah, it's tables and soda coolers, some random art and celebrities customer photos. The chairs though, are sturdy and really comfortable which always surprises me. The prices have for sure risen, steeply, but since it's only an occasional treat now for us it was worth every penny. I noticed this delicatessen leaving my doctor's appointment across the street from St .Mary's Hospital. Limited parking spaces available. Outdoor seating available and inside seating. Spacious tables. Staff was welcoming and helpful in ordering suggestions when I informed them it was my first time visiting. They have THE best pastrami sandwich in StL, bar none. The staff is very friendly and efficient and serve you a sandwich that is awesome. The store itself isn't memorable but the food and portions certainly are. Can't honestly recommend this place to anyone. I love Blues City Deli but I would place Carl's pastrami ahead of Blues City's. I have had their rueben sandwich and it too is a killer. Also, I have had their braunschweiger sandwich. Flavor was good and the staff was really nice. They give you a nice size portion of pastrami too. Only downside I would say is the pastrami was a bunch of little pieces. Wasn't slices of meat but more fatty little pieces that kind of fell out and was hard to eat as a sandwich. More like fork type pastrami. Carl's deli was a definite treat. My husband suggested it for one of our lunch dates and I was not disappointed. The lines weren't very long and they moved very quickly even during the holiday rush. The inside had an old school vibe of a your grandma's kitchen everyone was extremely friendly and helped me through the ordering process since it was my first time eating there. The sandwich I got was the smoked turkey sandwich and it was delicious. It was fiilled with turkey, fresh hoagie bread, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo my husband got the hot pastrami and mustard sandwich it was so big he couldn't even finish it. I love a good, nothing fancy, sandwich for lunch, so on a recent business trip to St. Louis, a group of us in the office ordered sandwiches from Carl's and they were great, certainly fulfilling my sandwich craving. For lunch, I ordered a pastrami sandwich on wheat bread, topped with pepper-jack cheese, served hot. The pastrami was tender and so flavorful, just phenomenal! The bread was warm and very soft, which I was worried at first it wouldn't be able to contain all the pastrami but was glad to see there were no issues there. The pepper-jack cheese melted on top of the pastrami was the right choice, adding a little spice to the sandwich. With my sandwich, I had a bag of Baked Lays, but I ended up not eating them as I was so full! Carl's serves up an excellent deli sandwich for the price. Cute, authentic little deli right across from St. Mary's hospital. There are a few tables to eat inside with a tv. The sandwiches here were fantastic!!! I got the pastrami sandwich on an onion roll with provolone, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The pastrami had amazing flavor and it was tender. The only thing I wish was different about the meat was that I wish it wasn't shredded into tiny pieces. I wish it was sliced into bigger pieces so when they pile it high on the sandwich, it doesn't all fall off when you eat it. I got the sandwich warmed so the cheese was all melty and ooey gooey. The onion roll was soft and really good. It came with a pickle. We also tried the chicken noodle soup. We weren't a fan of this. The noodles were super mushy and the chicken was dry. We tried the carrot cake, oatmeal, and chocolate chip cookies. The chocolate chip cookies were ok, but not good enough to get again. We didn't care for the other 2 desserts. read more

My husband was shocked that I have never been to Carl's. He absolutely loves it, and if the Facebook group St. Louis Sandwich Connessuiers is to be believed the pastrami and the coened beef are the best! I wasn't ready for the full on pastrami, so I ordered tuna salad and it was delightful. Fresh bread, sweet relish, and a lot of tuna salad. There are actually a lot of non pastrami items on the menu that I will be going back to try. Bologna, turkey, jumbo frank, beef knisch etc. I tried a bit of my husband's hot pastrami and it was VERY good. It would have been too much for me today with outdoor chores, but I will be back to try! This is a legit deli, meat in the case, bags of chips, and a saran wrapped cookies.
