Caveat Emptor...this is an auction house where consistently 70% of offerings go unsold. Items that sell are mostly garage sale quality with realizations commensurate. Higher hawked items have unrealistic reserves and rarely sell...an interesting trick is the retraction of shill bids when not luring the lone bidder to the next level and then retracting the shill bid, declaring the hapless last bidder the winner-often well above the reserve, assuming legitimate competition. Reminds me of the stereotype used car salesman of earlier times.. read more

Purchased a work of art from them and never received it. Had several conversations with them about it and was assured in one of the last ones that I would receive a full refund. Months went by and then I remembered to check to see of my credit card was ever refunded - nope. Called them again and was told that it was too long ago - why didn't I call sooner. My answer - when someone tells me they are going to give me a refund I take them at their word and don't think that I have to hound them about it or check every day. I thought looking at Yelp reviews that I would see something better than I am seeing. Apparently I'm not the only one being scammed by them. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. Very unprofessional, as they took my money for a won lot and after some slight delay setting up pick up and shipping they refuse to allow the lot to be picked up. I have contacted Dave Johnson, owner of Greenwich Auction, four times-by email and text- since December 2022 regarding a Chinese painting I inherited from my parents asking him to return it to me. to date, he has NOT responded to me: he has NOT returned my painting. I entrusted to him to auction or sell privately on my behalf. I understand he put it in one auction. It did nit reach its reserve: it was not sold. As I noted above, I subsequently contacted and asked him to return my painting. He blatantly disregarded my emails and text. Mr. Johnson's action(s) or rather lack of them are unconscionable. His keeping my painting, to my mind, is tantamount to thievery. read more

Worst experience I've ever had. Don't even think of consigning your pieces to this auction house. They never return emails, calls, or texts. They won't even attempt to sell many of the pieces given to them. They think they're Sotheby's but know absolutely nothing about the items they are given. Terrible experience!!!! read more

I have bought many times from Greenwich over the past few years, and always had a good experience. However, last year, I sold 20 items/lots at two different times. The first batch was fine, and the transaction was smooth...though I was mailed someone else's check for a mirror I didn't own...despite the fact that I had told them it wasn't my mirror (I ripped up the check). The second batch, however, which had nine lots, severed my dealings this auction house. First of all, they lost one of my lots, switched another of my lots with someone else's, and never paid me for several lots. I called many times, but the voicemail was always full or not even picking up; I was able to reach someone one time and left a message with her for the owner with details about why I was calling, but no call back; I emailed the owner several times and never even got a return email. So I've moved on. There are too many auction houses in SW Connecticut to be stuck with this one -- if you're a seller, chose one of the others!! By the way, it really pains me to write this (especially as we just purchased a vacation home in the Litchfield area and am scouting every other auction house in the state for furnishings) -- I was a big fan of Greenwich Auctions for several years! read more

I found a set of china I was interested in on Invaluable, one of the sites used by Greenwich Auction to conduct online auctions. i signed up, provided all the information needed for the bid (opening bid, max bid, contact info and credit card info) and was put in pending status. This was on Saturday the 15th. I sent a message through invaluable on Monday and received a response that I needed to call them, so I did. I spoke to Michelle who indicated there was no problem and my status would get approved. Fast forward to Wednesday (auction was Thursday the 20th) and I am still in pending status, so I call again and message again. No response to the message, but was told on the phone they process these things the morning of the auction. 30 minutes before the auction opened and my bid has vanished and I am still in pending status. I call again and am told she would give my name to "him" to get updated. The auction gets started, I still cannot bid, I call again and am told she will see what's going on and get hung up on. I watched as the item I wanted was auctioned to someone else while I was still idling in pending status. No explanation, no communication. Had there been some concern regarding the information provided, I am certain it could have been cleared up if they had only communicated with me. I was told everything would be fine and I would be all set, but that was simply not true. They did a disservice to their seller since my bid maxed at $100 higher than the selling price. Will not entertain using them again for anything. Dreadful experience. read more

Pay attention to the bad reviews of Greenwich Auctions. I called a full day ahead to schedule a pick up of items won in an auction. After driving 2 hours to collect my items I was told at the front desk that my items could not be found and there was nothing they could do to help me. The desk attendant said she would need to talk to the manager about there whereabouts but she couldn't call him because he was busy. They had no idea when they might be able to find my paid for items other than "probably not today". read more

I was clearing out some of my favorite china, artifacts, and furniture in order to downsize and move out of the area, and thought I could trust the integrity of this auction house since they seemed to be the place to go for higher end items, but found that they sold most at YARD SALE prices! After complaining to the owner of the poor handling of the sales via email and phone and to put a halt at selling any more inventory through their site, I have not heard from anyone and have no idea what happened with my inventory. The auction house posted a beautiful mantel for sale in their April 18,2020 auction .They only posted the outside dimensions, not that inside which surrounds the fireplace opening. Because of Covid 19 restrictions, one could not personally inspect the items offered for sale so I wrote the auctioneer requesting the dimensions. He provided them to me with the additional description "this is a statement piece". I successfully bid on the mantel and drove two hours to bring it home. When home,I learned that the measurements for the opening were wrong, the mantel was useless to me. I wrote the auctioneer but did not receive a reply. My advice,if you are going to bid on an item , and want an accurate description then inspect it yourself. DO NOT rely on this auction house ,even for a simple measurement. read more

This auction house misrepresents items. They tell you items are one things, and the item you get it nothing like they describe. Example: $5 jewelry items they claim at worth $150.00. they also force you to use their shippers and they charge twice what is fair to ship the junk to you. Do not buy from his auction house online. You will be disappointed. When you call them to complain they won't return your calls. And when you try to dispute with your credit card company, they will lie to them too. read more

Please let me know if you are interested in a class action suit against this business for illegal imposition of "processing fee" for use of credit cards. Imagine how much these folks rake in at 3% or 5% of total sale every time a buyer wants to use Visa or AmEx. That has to be a huge sum of money that will need to be distributed to those in the law suit. read more

I regularly bid at auctions around the country. I bought several items for a friend and contacted one of their recommended shippers. I got Covid shortly afterwards and forgot about items I had paid $723 for; they were to be mailed to another address in another part of state. I just found out my friend never received them; she didn't want to worry me while I was so sick. I this week found out and reached out to Greenwich. They completely ignored me; not even courtesy of reply. They've now reported through a third party that after 30 days they consider I had forfeited the items. They could have easily emailed me or phoned me to let me know items hadn't been picked up by their recommended shipper. Unprofessional doesn't begin to describe them. I would recommend anyone consider doing business with them to think again. Greenwich Auction legally stole my money and kept my items which I had paid for. I guess they got to resell them a second time and double their money. Worst experience ever with a merchant. One star is too high a rating.; they deserve negative stars. read more

This place is an absolute fraud. They were initially very friendly and helpful and took an enormous amount of furniture and collectibles from me. It was a helpful service, as I had quite a lot of stuff to get rid of in a short amount of time, as my house sold, and I was significantly downsizing. HOWEVER, though generous estimates were given of how much my things were likely to see for (thousands of dollars), I ended up with a check for $45, as the only item that sold for over $50 sold for $175, and by the time they took out their commission and listing fees and moving expenses, that was all that was left. I would have felt better donating the things they took to charity than to let these thieves auction it and come away all but empty handed anyway. Absurd! Please do not give them your business - either as a buyer or a seller! read more

Greenwich Auctions demands not one but two credit cards for new customers to participate in its on-line auctions. This is even for small lots with items which are not particularly expensive. They ask for the second card to be delivered over the phone, which does not have the same security features as an encrypted on-line website. Needless to say, this potential new customer is doing business elsewhere. I'm not sure how a business which habitually insults new customers by implying they don't pay their bills can expect to thrive. I was prepared to bid about twice what the winning bidder did for a small set of dishes, and passed up participating in another auction this week. Shame on Greenwich Auction! read more

Will not use again. It is a shame as I have developed great relationships with other auctioneers and frequently buy at auction. First won and picked up a couple items that had damage that was quite evident and not listed in the description or photos on live auctioneers. Payment was difficult as will only take payment by credit card through email or over phone. You would think that with current times they would take online payment through live auctioneers or paypal. Do you really think that I would send you my cc information in an email? Figured would give a second chance but after this time and another item experience will not deal with again. I have experienced their complete misrepresentation of items first hand now and their lack of customer service in following through on a transaction. On an item that they listed as an original painting it was in fact just a giclee that you can easily find and buy online from home furnishing online sites. I had to contact them twice via email and then they finally updated the description to correctly represent it. On the most recent item I won in their auction I tried multiple times to reach them by phone and email without success and then they resold the item. Gave them enough chances. My business will be with many of the other great auction houses I have dealt with in the past that care about my patronage and being upfront. I bid on an 18th century table online checking several times all pictures, and especially those showing the table top. I won the table and drove from Wisconsin to CT to pick it up. When I arrived, I couldn't see the table because there was so much other stuff on top of it. When I came back after 30 min, they had removed everything from the top, but the top had several big deep and long scratches and holes. I of course told them that I was upset and threatened to leave the table. The woman just gave me a horrible sneaky sarcastic smile without looking at me in the eyes. They couldn't care less. Never buy anything from the auctioneer. They are absolutely disrespectful. read more

Stay away, highly unethical. They listed a carpet as being made in Morroco and a very desirable and special type. I get the rug and there is a large tag on the back that says it was made in India which is worth a fraction. read more
