Been coming here for 3 years and live 2 doors down. Cafe staff are incredibly rude, not all of them but have spoken to 2 who can only be described as aggressive. 1 today. Complained to Manger who was remarkably not interested in the least. Im a pensioner and disabled. Really distressing experience today, brought to tears and Manager actually laughed in my face. My favourite cinema in London due to its constantly good selection of popular and alternative films. They have an excellent bar upstairs which is very comfortable and relaxed- a place where you could equally go on a date and sit back and read the papers on a Sunday afternoon. They sell a variety of organic snacks and drinks which you can take into the cinema with you, in addition to the drinks which you can buy from the bar upstairs (a big plus of this place is being able to take beer and wine in to the cinema) The chairs are extremely comfortable- far more comfortable than usual- and are worth the extra few pounds that you spend on getting in. read more

Sofas in cinema #5! We sat in the back on a comfy sofa--aaahhh--and watched The Raven with John Cusack--boooo. If it's not the 80s/90s, then one might do well to pass on watching a Cusack film although I did find Hot-tub Time-machine, or whatever it was called, pretty funny. The Picturehouse, however, is always a treat. Not only are there sofas downstairs in theatre 5, but also a bar replete with beer, wine, and spirits for your drinking pleasure. Sweet popcorn, chocolate, and other nibbles are found on the ground floor where one purchases/picks up tickets. On the top floor is yet another, fuller bar for those who are catching a flick in one of the other theatres within the cinema. The Picturehouse is like an art-house cinema that plays first-run films with a few documentaries and indies on the side. -love it. read more

The Greenwich Picturehouse is a cinema based in Greenwich High Road and is good for a complete evening out. You can enjoy pre and post show drinks in the bar upstairs which feels trendy and overlooks the bustling road below, or you can pop over to The Mitre across the road which is also a brilliant little spot to check out. Unlike other cinemas, Greenwich Picturehouse enables you to take your alcoholic beverages into the screening rooms but do ask that you drink responsibly. Downstairs you have a tapas bar and a grill (both separate from The Picturehouse) for if you fancy a bite to eat before your film. The films shown here vary. You have the obvious mainstream releases shown on the screen but Greenwich Picturehouse is also worth looking at if you like your alternative films. They frequently show foreign language films which other cinemas seem too afraid to show as well as some good oldies and independent releases which is great if you fancy broadening your horizons. The in-house magazine helpfully lists all the events which are happening over the following months so you can organise your diary or start reading up on films which have not hit the mainstream. They also cater for children and mums with special mother & baby screenings as well as other special needs during the day which means that everyone has the ability to see films. Despite the positives about Greenwich Picturehouse's commitment to film, its customers and the community in general, there is one huge flaw which cannot be overlooked; The prices. At a weekend it is a whopping £10 per person entry which makes this cinema is an expensive night out especially when you consider that the multiplexes down the road offer much cheaper entry. In my own personal opinion, £10 entry to see a film cannot be justified. Even weekday evenings are £9 which is a lot considering that you can either see the same film for a lower price elsewhere or buy the DVD for the price of one person's entry. This is definitely a five star venue. I've recently discovered it coming to see Opera screened live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the Met in New York. Both were great experiences: not quite the live experience, of course, but you get a fascinating behind the scenes commentary, great views, and it is very comfortable, not to mention a fraction of the cost. Well worth a try for Opera virgins. Other plusses? More interesting food (and decent beer - how amazing is that) and drinks on offer, a real ice-cream seller in the intervals, and a wonderfully eclectic selection of films. OK, the foyer is a little small and the ticket office can be a little slow, but the staff are nice and these seem like small gripes, as you feel they're making an effort. And - as everyone else says - comfy seats that recline! read more

A really sweet cinema, and with a student card it is only £5.50. Compared to Leicster square, that my just be a massive bargain! I do understand that the normal adult prices are very steep, but I have not had to pay them just yet, and therefore will complain then and not now! I have been to see quite a few alternative films here, as they seem to specialize in that. For example, today I went to see Waltz withBashir. Although I have my problems with the actual film, the room in which we watched it was tiny and so cosy! Like sitting on bog sofas at a friends house. The people who work there are very friendly and let us in even though the film had just begun. I just like the atmosphere in there, it does not feel anywhere near is corporate as a huge odeon or vue. The bar is really nice (again a little pricey) and good for an afer show drink with friends. I would recommend this cinema if you want a chilled out trip (and are a student!!) read more

What can I say? I love Picturehouse cinemas, and I really like discovering how one differs from the next. Hackney PH is my usual cinema, but one day I decided to visit both Greenwich Market AND the cinema, so the fact that there's a PH in Greenwich set the day's plan in stone. The cinema isn't huge, but the cafe/bar is a lovely space to chill out, relax, and have a drink before going to the film. There are big windows looking out into the centre of Greenwich, and you can choose to sit at tables or on sofas! Neat. And super comfy. Because we were watching an indie film, we were in a smaller cinema. So I'm not sure what the bigger screens might be like, but our experience was fantastic. It's not easy to go there all the time, but if I have the chance again, I wouldn't hesitate to go back! read more

this is the place to watch a movie. Everyone mentions the reclining chairs, but they are always worth another mention. I like that you can book your seats and choose your seats in advance. I like that you can have a drink at the bar and take your drink into the cinema. I like that the screens aren't enormous so you can't get the multiplex feel, with the multiplex noise. I like that people who go here appear to love films and love people who love films. This is the place to watch a movie. read more

This cinema is a great place to watch a film. Even with a completely packed house there was ample room for my ample ass..essment of the movie. The chairs are comfy and the prices for a primetime film were still only £9! Beats the snot out of what you'll pay in central London. The only complaint I've got with the place is the sound and lighting. Sure it may be a legal requirement to leave some overhead lights on, but I found it distracting from the show. I'm also from the George Lucas school of theatre sound: loud is good, louder is better and so-loud-even-Helen-Keller-knows-she's-missing-something is best. I am a terrible yelper... I went to this place a month ago and have only just got round to it. Unemployed now so professional yelper! Woo! Sooooo the Greenwich Picturehouse. Apart from being beside myself with excitement at seeing Harry Potter (yeah I'm a geek, but we rule the world *raspberry* :P) there was further cause for excitement....two words: Reclining. Chairs. *thud* Even when almost horizontal you can still see over the top of the person in front which made me very happy as normally there's always a 6'5"er sitting bang in front of my 5'5" self. Not cool. Good sized theatre with a good sized screen and sound system. The popcorn I stole from another was very nice too. Trumps Greenwich's other cinemas. As far as picture-viewing experiences go, Greenwich Picturehouse for the win! Good sound, great view of the screen, and the chairs? The chairs make me feel special. Big, clean, cozy, reclining, I'm like some bigshot VIP at a private screening. Didn't seem like there were any bad seats and the theater was big enough for a good screen size but not so big that you were miles away. The cinema is easy to get to and the people are friendly. I didn't eat anything but it looked like they had a good selection of food for the movies as well as a restaurant connected to the theater. Can't comment on their movie selection because I only went for Harry Potter, but I'd certainly go back for a movie anytime. Next time I won't wear my naughty wizard outfit and I'll probably get fewer weird looks. read more

As far as cinema's go this is one of the best I have been to in a while. I'm going to start by admiting that I did see Harry Potter here and being a HUGE fan that might have had a teeny tiny influence over this but.... saying that I actuall really enjoyed their comfy seating, well priced tickets (£9) and film selection. One thing that was so great about this is the service. I book one too many tickets as a member of our group didn't turn up and they were so totally okay with just refunding me the price. No big deal at all! Brilliant! they event have a little phone in the foyer to call for a mini cab if you need one. Fantastic! As with many independent cinemas they did have a bar/foody place attached that I didn't quite get to try but I will totally be back. Good size and spaced so that even with a really tall person in front of you you shouldn't get a blocked view. There were awesome chairs too that reclined plus with tons of leg room and made the film viewing that bit more comfortable. The screen was a good size and with no visable lines in it (hate this when it happens). Down points would be the fact I thought the cinema lights were to bright while the film was playing. Popcorn was nice and didn't end up with too many bits at the bottom which is always a bonus. In all I'd not be averse to coming here again. read more

My favourite cinema. Bought a membership because I love coming here so much. My main complaint of most cinemas is rubbish chairs and no beer. Get this: THE SEATS RECLINE AND THEY SELL CRAFT BEER. I am not a cinema fan. Well, it's not that I'm not a fan, but if I'm going to spend £15 on seeing something once, I'd rather go to the theatre. However when I do go, I go here. It's plush. You never stare at the back of peoples head, you've got ample leg room, you're comfortable. It's not cheap, but its better value than the other cinemas like Vue or Cineworld. Plus, it's in Greenwich which is just lovely. Top Tip: Download a vouchercloud app or similar because they often have 2-4-1 on popcorn check in offers. read more

Shockingly, though i have been a local of the Greenwich area for the last 5 years i had never ventured to the Picturehouse before last weekend. I have now been there 3 times in 2 weeks; hence i am obviously a convert to their cinema-tastic ways! The cinema is completely unassuming in nature, flanked by a high calibre restaurant on one side and a taperia on the other. I wasn't bombarded by a Nandos, Starbucks, Ben + Jerrys, or the other host of large corporation chains that usually dominate your Vue or Odeon foyers. In fact, if you want you can even bring a picnic from home; i wasn't the only one eating crudite rather than an offensively expensive yet small box of popcorn. (don't be fooled; i am no health nut. I also consumed a large pack of giant chocolate buttons) The programming is an interesting mix of current box office hits, indie intrigues and the opportunity to see live theatre or opera courtesy of the Met and NT Live. For anyone who has an interest in all areas of the arts you can sate all your cultural cravings under one roof. I'm an Oscar fan. I stay up for the full awards ceremony each year and i cannot tell you how exciting it is to be able to see all the Best Picture nominees under one wonderful roof. All at £8.50 per ticket. Half the price of a central London venue. There is more than ample leg room, and the rumours are true, every seat is a recliner chair! The only slight downside is that there is no real indication of what row you're standing by and the seat numbers are very small and dark in an equally dark room. If you're sitting on an aisle there is a tendency for any latecomers to interrupt you, and the film, by asking you how they find their seat. There are ushers but they seem to disappear as soon as the film starts. Its a small issue however in what is otherwise the most delicious of viewing experiences. Secret Tip: Buy a Picturehouse membership. You get 3 free tickets per year, plus a discount on tickets after that. I've gone free every time so far and also treated my friends all for under £30. It's a great package and definitely my christmas present of choice for 2010. read more

It's so expensive these days to go to the cinema, so if you're going to do it I suggest you do it in style... and this is where the Picture house Greenwich comes into its own. No bad quality popcorn and screaming brat children here! Downstairs they have a lovely little eatery where you can order a yummy Spanish Jamon meat board - enjoyed with a lovely glass of wine pre-screening. You can then pick up your top up glass of yummy wine from the cinema bar... ...which I have to mention is a lovely place to hang out even if you're not going to watch a film - with amazing large windows and a relaxed, chilled out vibe, great selection of beers, wines and snacks. As you may have guessed the wine is also pretty amazing too ... So, back to the wine... which you can take into the screening rooms (remember to buy a large), and enjoy in the ample super comfy reclining seats (yup, I said reclining, don't be scared of pushing them back) whilst watching a great selection of films. Really good red wine and a good film = my idea of chill out heaven. I love this cinema, it's my local of choice (although is around 20 minutes further out than the closest cinema to me). It has a lovely vibe, is well maintained, has a great sound system, they somehow have managed to get the temperature right and they show a great selection of new and the more arty / cult films. They also have themed film runs, the latest being studio Gibili. Thoroughly worth every penny. If you're thinking of visiting regularly I also suggest looking into a membership, it offers great discounts and can very quickly pay for itself. read more

Another location of the purportedly independently spirited Picturehouse chain, Greenwich Picturehouse is similarly middlebrow with only the very occasional tip of the hat to actual pictures. One would expect, at any rate, for Greenwich of all boroughs to have a proper rep cinema, or first run cinema with tastes that run a little deeper than the whims of the tabloid press, but apparently not. There are some really weird reviews for this cinema on here. So, gently to counter some of the misconceptions I believe I've seen: it's really not any more expensive than any other cinema that I've been to in London and, if you buy a membership, it's really cheap, especially considering the experience you get (a whole other world to many of the Odeons around the city). And yes, they do show quite a broad range of films with more than the occassional nod to the art-house and the foreign-language, but I think it's maybe a bit much to say that they don't show anything mainstream. I've seen nearly every Best-Picture-Oscar-nominated film here in the last few weeks, and you don't really get any more mainstream than the Academy Awards. So, to the positives. The seating is reserved and the seats are spectacularly comforble. And they recline people, THEY RECLINE. The staff are friendly, the cinema is clean. There's a decent place to buy the usual snacks and it's not filled with the nauseating smell of boiled hotdogs. Plus there's a bar that you would actually contentedly drink in even if you weren't there to watch a film. And, of course, it's in a great area, so there is plenty to keep you occupied around your film. And the Rivington Grill next door does good fuel for the middle of any film marathon. read more

This cinema gets most things right: a great choice of films, from blockbuster to indie; special screenings for parents with babies, older people, and autism-friendly screenings; a bar; and incredibly comfortable, reclining seats. Want a meal before or after the film? You can choose the Organic Tapas Co or Rivington Grill. The comfort and amenities make it seem really worthwhile going out to watch a film rather than waiting for the DVD. I've particularly enjoyed films in the Screening Room. Its smaller audience are seated in large chairs, with its own bar and toilets right alongside. The membership scheme is great if you go more than a couple of times a year: get free and reduced tickets, access to member events, discounts at the restaurants, and don't pay booking fees. The only downside: there is a sophisticated selection of snacks on sale at the ticket counter, but not that cinema classic, popcorn! read more

The word picturehouse annoys me. Let's call a spade a spade, this place is a cinema. Now, don't get me wrong, it's a very lovely cinema indeed. It's a bit overprice - a tenner a ticket. But the cinema inside is lovely - reclining seats, enough room for you to not overhear another couples whispering (and do your own whispering) but it's a pretty small cinema too. There's a tapas bar next door and a bar upstairs (didn't see if you can take beer in to the film, but I think you can), and enough arty films and standard flicks to keep everyone busy. Unfortunately, for an art house cinema, they could sort the food out. Popcorn, sweets - over priced and a rubbish choice. Otherwise it'd be five stars. They've turned me into a film addict again. When I used to live in South London, Greenwich Picturehouse was one of my favourite cinemas to go to. It's in a great location with loads of places to eat before or go for a drink after the film. I recommend you book before you go as sometimes the queues can get a bit long for popular films however. Once inside the screen room, the big red seats are really comfortable and they usually have a good selection of big movies and little indie arthouse films to choose from. The bar inside the cinema is a great place to chill if you are early for your film and they let you take your drinks into the movie which is a nice little bonus. read more

Civilised with a capital C, the Picturehouse may be a chain cinema, but they're small, and it's lovely. Once you see a film here, it's hard to go back to the 'orrible Odeon. Super sound, plush seats, a distinct lack of noisy teens, friendly staff, sensible snacks, a wonderful bar this place has amped up the enjoyment factor of movie nights to unprecedented levels. The bar is nice for coffees or drinks anytime, regardless of whether you are indulging cinematically, while membership options and midweek deals mean it's hardly more punishing on the pocket than a standard multiplex. Finally, watch out for special screenings. As if this place weren't civilised enough, the most genteel moments I have spent in recent years were passed being lightly entertained by a one-off screening of High Society. And all before noon just ravishing. read more

Being a big fan of cinema it's nice to have the option to visit a more upmarket venue sometimes. The Picturehouse in Greenwich was a dormant cinema for years until relatively recent redevelopment of the plot. It is now adjoining the Rivington Bar and Grill and an Organic Tapas Bar. The cinema is very comfortable, the seats are admittedly some of the comfiest I've had the pleasure in which to sit. However the pricing of the tickets do seem very excessively high, and sometimes it can't be helped but feel that you aren't just paying for a better seat but that maybe the management are operating some sort of social screening to boot. Crackpot theories aside once inside the viewing experience is very pleasant and the cinema is in a good location for a quick post movie libation after to disect the beast you've just watched. read more

Fabulous - one of the few times that a much-loved cinema was closed and reopened even better than before. WIth the addition of the brilliant bar (which lets you take in your gin adn tonics to watch the film, how civilised!), lovely reclining comfy seats and a good tapas restauarant below, Greenwich has really hit the jackpot with this little independent. Parking is not easy, as with anywhere in Greenwich, though the nearby Somerfield Car park often offers up a much-sought after spot. Films are good and varied, but alwas with an independent streak to help differentiate it from the huge multiplex on the outskirts of Greenwich. This place really deserves your custom. read more

A cinema for grown ups. Big, comfy seats, an interesting range of films (sometimes challenging but doesn't shy from showing big films either), good popcorn and good quality screens. The bar is nice too - not quite enough seats but comfortable. I love it here. But have been disappointed more than I should be - you have to book more often than you'd expect. Despite being in a chain of cinema's, it's obvious that this place is well run and appreciated by its customers. It tends to screen quality films that are slightly left of mainstream. The screens themselves are well looked after, and Screen 1 is an impressively sized auditorium. Unfortunately, the last time I was there I was seated next to a man who coughed gently under his breath on average every seven seconds through the whole of 'There Will Be Blood'... but don't let this put you off, he's probably not a regular. It offers a nice bar & cafe, friendly staff, varied programming and a top quality viewing experience (comfortable seating, surround sound and adequately-sized screens). If you want an antidote to the sterile overly-commercialised multiplex screening only the latest blockbusters, check this place out. They often screen older films as one-offs and do theme-related cycles every month (such as "British cinema during WWII" or "the films of Almodovar"). But don't get the wrong impression: they don't eschew mainstream fare. They rely on popular films as much as on art-house, indie and foreign releases, correctly assuming that audiences overlap. Tickets are averagely priced and students get concessions. For those who are frequent film-goers, membership is an option: it guarantees a pound off every ticket, invitations to preview screenings, and monthly mailings. For film geeks, there's also a fortnightly film quiz held on Tuesday evenings. read more

There are four screens - one big and three not so big - and all have really comfortable reclining seats. They show a decent mix of blockbusters and great films you've never heard of and all showings have reserved seats - if you book on the website you can see which ones are available and choose the ones you fancy. We live right around the corner from here, but that's not the only reason this is our cinema of choice. Greenwich Picturehouse has consistently great showings, is never crowded and is single handedly responsible for helping me instill a love of Hayao Miyazaki films with the special run they had last summer. My kids already loved Ponyo and Spirited Away, so it was a real treat to introduce them to other films week on week. read more

I have membership to this cinema because I visit at least once a week! It shows all sorts of films, and there will always be something interesting to watch. You can pick up drinks and treats when you buy your tickets, or head upstairs to the bar where you can have a drink before the film or even take it into the screen with you (I have seen people with bottles of wine watching a film!). They also have a screen in the basement that also has a bar. Overall, I love this place. Did I mention how great the seats were and that my 6'1 boyfriend has plenty of leg room? Did I mention that where ever you sit you can still see the screen perfectly? Just try it for yourself! read more

i've been going to this cinema since i was knee high- unfortunately it closed down due to lack of funds, but i was happy to see that the cineam has re-opened. What a difference they have made- new seats, a new foyer, and it now has a bar tucked away upstairs. the seating is very comfortable- even for a fidget like me!. i would recommend you go here, the kids will love it! read more

A really pleasant break from the tacky comercialised chain cinemas. Showing a mixture of latest blockbusters and arty and foreign releases. The staff are actually friendly (cf. Odeon?), and the whole venue has a warm and welcoming feel to it. The seating is soooooo comfortable (reclines, legroom), the screens are medium sized, which is perfect for watching, with amazing surround sound. The toilets are clean (!), and the bar is always good for a coffee/snack. Also, the attached Rivington Grill restaurant is simply divine. read more
