Dr Gregory Bernstein incited long-term pain and bowel dysfunction after recommending and performing a procedure 5+ months ago which future colorectal providers described as contraindicated to symptoms, without cause (the procedure was on an asymptomatic hemorrhoid, incidentally noted during colonoscopy), and likely with improper technique, due to the facility's preemptive use of nitroglycerin. He rushed through the first appointment we had, and didn't ask many questions. Half my responses were mischarted, and he cut me off wherever I tried to ask questions, or provide detail. When confronted with the severe pain (like, in tears, after previously tolerating a thrombosed hemorrhoid), he was a condescending jerk, and tried to minimize the pain as just anxiety, initially refusing to do any exam, and never performing a DRE, before or after, actively delaying receiving the right diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner which may have helped to undo the damage he contributed to. He just said to schedule an appointment a few months out, and it would be gone by then if I used Nitroglycerin (which both didn't work, and added to irritation). A nurse initially refused to share a list of PT providers, until I finished two more bandings. He then charged my insurance $1k for a second procedure he never performed. (Edit: this was marked as an office surgery in claim, but the CPT code was correct in EOB. He did bill initial visit at 45 to 60 minutes, despite less than 15 minutes of interaction) On Yelp, others have described similar incidents, and being guided into a procedure branded as "painless" without explanation or concern when severe pain is the outcome. The entity had a negative reputation from both a local colorectal specialist, and PT. I tried to switch providers at GastroHealth, but was told that wouldn't be possible, and to seek referral to hospital system (months out) instead. After leaving a negative review, Dr Bernstein rescheduled video visits (for a rectal injury), where he contributed nothing remotely valuable. This has caused thousands of dollars in medical bills, invasive tests, temporary disability, and near constant pain, severe enough to prevent me from being able to travel over the holidays, even after months of PT. The experience has been incredibly traumatic, to trust a doctor, and go from an already distressing amount of pain (which he did nothing of value to address), to an all new kind of pain. I truly believe he is incompetent and unethical, and someone who should not be practicing medicine, especially anything colorectal adjacent. read more

I previously wrote a review in which I stated a few negative things that I would like to retract, having found later were not accurate. He apparently did not cause my anal fissure. This being said, he also never called or had his office call me to see how I was doing when they knew I was in pain after the hemmorhoid banding procedures, so I cannot in good conscience give him high praise. read more

Have been followed by Dr. Bernstein for many years, I have no concerns about his competence. He was entirely cordial and pleasant the first several years, just going in to have issues with GERD followed. Unfortunately I have not responded well to the meds that have been prescribed. He criticized me today for still being on the same medication regimen as in years past, when I have not improved and have damage from GERD. If he knew of medication that would be more effective, this was not communicated to me on a prior visit. He could write those orders or send a reco on to the referring physician, my PCP. While I appreciate his concern that I not develop cancer, venting hostility and intense criticism and asking me why my med regimen has not changed in the face of lack of progress is not helpful. He did tell me of some new medications today that could be more effective. I am not a physician working in this (or any) field of medicine so there was no reason to fault me for not knowing this. Changing the orders himself or seeing to it the recommendations are communicated to me (prior to going off on me) or my PCP would be more appropriate. This is not the first time I have been on the receiving end of hostility from him, but it is the last. Getting a ration of you know what prior to having an endoscopy, when it is already a stressful experience, is not something I needed. I understand it came from a place of concern, but the delivery was not acceptable or appropriate. read more

I'd suggest you make sure you need a procedure and don't just take Dr. Bernstein's recommendation. After my colonscopy, which went fine, Dr Bernstein suggested that he could remove my hemmorhoids (which were not really bothering me much). He told me it was a simple procedure that only took about five or ten minutes. He did not inform me this procedure was not necessary nor that it would require three procedures, each two weeks apart. In all fairness, I'm guessing they gave me paperwork that mentioned this, so I take responsibility for not reading this. I just took Dr. Bernstein at his word. In any case, while performing the second hemmorhoid banding procedure, he somehow caused an anal fissure, though he later denies this. However, it is way too concidental for this to have happened and I know precisely when the injury was sustained. Since this time, for the last four months, I have been in constant discomfort and often a good deal of pain. It has been the worst four months of my entire life. To add insult to injury, in reponse to my question, he replied that I could still remain active in playing sports. I later discovered such activities could cause further damage or at least hamper my recovery. When I was suffering in pain, I called to get in to see him and had to wait over a month to get in and have him diagnose the problem. During all this time, he has never, not even once, contacted me to see how I am recovering. The nurses there are great, in spite of the very busy practice and their limited time to answer questions. It seems to me that Dr. Bernstein's primary concern is about making $ and not so much about looking out for his patients. At least, this has been my experience. read more

Dr. Bernstein was calm, professional, and knowledgeable. He made me feel comfortable and heard. He directly addressed my main concern, but also asked questions and reviewed my records, to ensure all my GI needs were met. His RN was great too. She created some handouts for education for patients, which I found to be really helpful. You can tell they really care. The location is pretty too. If you are putting off going bc it's an awkward subject, don't. Just go see Dr. Bernstein, you'll be in good hands. read more

Wonderful clinic. Great doctors, nurses, customer service is amazing. In this world where customer service is often given grudgingly or not at all Gastro Health stands out like a shining star. My normal specialist at Swedish couldn't see me for 11 months for a serious problem. The excellent Dr. Bernstein was able to see me in two weeks. Two weeks for an experienced specialist. I thought that I had died and gone to heaven! You might think the doctors are substandard because this is too good to be true but not so. I researched everyone of them and all went to good medical schools in the US and had residencies in good hospitals. Dr, Bernstein is one of the best specialists that I have ever seen. Kind, polite and extremely competent. I got all the time I needed and when I was finished he sent me to his masters level nurse and she clearly explained the after care required. Maybe I go to the wrong specialists but this doctor gave me a complete 6 week plan for diagnosing my illness. It was step by step with the tests, drugs and everything else I needed to diagnose what is wrong with me. In 6 weeks I see the individual nurse (not a care team) who was assigned to me. I can call her or go to their site for help and support. Gastro health also takes Medicare and a variety of other insurance. Gastro health is privately owned and not part of a sluggish slow over stretched system. This may be the medical care of the future. read more

Dr. Bernstein comes across as pretty disinterested and uncommunicative, so I'm surprised at the positive reviews. He is not one to be receptive to asking questions and he will rush you out of there as soon as possible. I did 3 banding procedures with Dr. Bernstein (none of them worked), he marked it as a hemmorhoidectomy surgery, so now I have a large bill for nothing. He also assured me that my insurance (United) would cover this, though a significant portion has not been covered. Find a different GI doctor who cares more. read more

I was referred to Dr. Bernstein by my GP, because Dr. Bernstein is my GP's doctor. Dr. Bernstein listens and answers your questions. I've had a great many gastro issues in my life and Dr. Bernstein is hands down the best in his specialty that I have encountered. read more

Dr. Bernstein is a natural at his speciality. Gastroenterology is definitely his calling; upon my first encounter with Dr. Bernstein he was extremely patient and listened to all of my questions and concerns. He is a skilled provider not only in the clinical setting but also in his diagnostics as an endoscopist. It is clear from the first visit that he cares for his patients and is truly dedicated to finding an answer for any of the gastrointestinal issues that they suffer from. I wish I could give a zero star here. I was billed $410 for 10 mins with the doctor. He did not even examine me properly despite me telling him that I had pains in my right abdomen area. I had to go to the ER next day. He also told that his medical assistant would give me a diet plan. However, the medical assistant just gave me a printout from online. read more

I normally don't review people or businesses or professionals, in fact, this is the first review I've ever done. Bottom line, Dr. Bernstein is worth a great review. If you have a need to see a gastroenterologist, I recommend you go see Dr. Bernstein first. He will talk to you like an old friend as soon as you meet him. He will patiently listen to all your concerns, will not rush you, and then will directly answer your questions. My two most recent colonoscopies have been performed by Dr. Bernstein and both went as well as one could hope for. The follow up communication was great as well. This clinic is completely incompetent at every level, cant schedule, doesn't know how to handle insurance and is completely unresponsive in emergency situations. My former gastroenterologist had moved to another location, so when my GP referred me to the clinic, I was very uncomfortable about choosing another physician. I checked out the website, and perused the various listings of doctors. Once I accept a new doctor, it has always been that I continue to see them until they retire, die, or move away. Recently I've had to see 2 of my favorite doctors retire, and a 3rd one is in his final year of practice before retiring! I give all this information to point out how very careful I am in choosing excellence in my physicians. I met Dr. Gregory Bernstein almost a week ago. At first, I was nervous, and skeptical as to his abilities to handle a complicated health history as mine is, because he seemed so young! My other doctors have either been older, or about my age, so this situation was new to me. I had a reasonably short wait time before he came in. He introduced himself and shook my hand as he explained that he had been going over my chart, doctors' notes, and hospital record. He took the time to really get to know my health issues. He was polite, intelligent, compassionate, and understanding. However, he wasn't willing to let ne off the hook for not have been following up as I should have. He's a straight shooter, while staying kind as he does so. I've accepted him as my hew physician with the knowledge that although he is younger, his training is modern and recent which helps counterbalance the fact that he hasn't practiced as long as some. What has also occurred to me is that he is still very enthusiastic about his field, whereas some older docs get burned out. At least I know this one isn't likely to retire on me!! . I've gone through several diagnostic procedures at the Fremont Endoscopy Center in the recent past, and I feel Dr. Bernstein and his associates helped to make those go as smooth as possible.
