A long time ago, Dr. Keating was awesome. But gradually this office started to go downhill and after he retired, I received such poor treatment from his replacement that I had to find a new dentist. Happily, I found an excellent new dentist, Dr. Nasir, at Columbia dental wellness, where I am receiving outstanding and respectful treatment. Unfortunately , I have to advise people to avoid Dr. Keating's office. read more

Originally, he was a great dentist, but overtime he became cranky and unreliable. I'm sad to have had this experience. At one point he even told me to ignore a cavity in my back right tooth and it is now a root canal as a result of ignoring it. I will very likely lose that tooth. Going back to him would be hit or miss, sometimes you get the good one and sometimes you don't. But as I now understand it, some other dentist has taken over his practice, but it still has his name on it, which I find a bit sketchy. I'm not sure how to rate Dr. Keating because I believe he's an excellent dentist in some respects; however, he made an aggressive diagnosis of me that has caused me no end of pain and worry. If you like charm, if you enjoy stories of offbeat family members ricocheting around the office, if you like the dentist's personal art on the walls, if you like someone who exudes originality and delights in the artistry of the profession (making crowns, etc.), Dr. Keating may work for you. However, Dr. Keating overbooks and does not always take the time needed, which can lead to disastrous results. I went in because of a filling another dentist had butchered. Dr. Keating began to work on it, and I kept wincing because it felt as if he were heading toward a tender area. After a few feints and starts (and his taking calls and telling us all about his mother who was dying in hospice), he told me I needed a root canal and left while the hygienist showed me a video--a video--of what the procedure would be like. Dr. Keating didn't talk with me about it himself, didn't discuss the implications, didn't ask me about any symptoms I might have that would actually support his diagnosis, didn't tell me what to expect at the endodontist's (it would have helped immensely had he told me they were supposed to run tests themselves and that his "diagnosis" was just a hypothesis). But, a pronouncement like that puts the fear of God in you, so I called the practice he recommended and went in. The first thing I noticed was the sign on the wall saying that Laurel Endodontics had won some kind of community award . . . in the 90s. This may have been when Keating went and got the procedure he raved about to me. Anyhow, because I didn't know beforehand that the practice was supposed to run tests to make sure I needed the root canal, I didn't advocate for myself when the endodontist didn't do this. It was enough for her that my referral said I couldn't get numb, so she went right to work destroying my tooth. Later on, when I mentioned to Keating's office that she hadn't run the tests, they looked askance at me because I hadn't gone to the exact person they had recommended. My boo-boo was to call the phone number they gave me and make an appointment, not specifying the exact doctor (or knowing there was more than one). Oh, the tutting and clucking over poor stupid me who blundered into the BAD endodontist because of my own cognitive failure. Anyhow, when Dr. Keating prepared to hack at my tooth further to prepare it for the crown, I asked him about all the pain and symptoms I was experiencing since having the root canal. Were they normal? He merely nodded his head, his filmy eyes not looking into mine. Dr. Keating whittled my tooth to practically nothing and put on a very pretty coffin of a crown. I've been told by my new dentist that my tooth is so small, I'll have to get an implant once my crown is worn out because it won't take any more crowns. As I said, I believe Dr. Keating has done great work on other people, and he made me the best temporary crown of all time. However, I don't believe any of the work done to me was necessary, and now I'm living with a ticking time bomb in my mouth that I can never get clean enough. (When I asked Dr. Keating about cleaning, he said his hygienist would walk me through some procedures. She helpfully suggested flossing.) So, if Keating recommends a procedure, PLEASE get a second opinion. He won't take time with you, he brushes you off, he could make you a whole new beautiful mouth, but if you have an old one that works, please stick with that. The dentist I have now does his own cleanings; takes the time to talk with you; sends you to endodontists who ask if you want a consultation or a procedure, thereby alerting you to the presence of some kind of scientific process; prizes accurate diagnoses above all else; and, amazingly, asks if you liked the people to whom he referred you. Yes, I know long reviews make the author look nuts. Take my story in balance and make the right decision for you. read more

Firstly, I want to say that Dr. Keating and his staff are all friendly and wonderful. I called for an appointment and they were able to get me in for a consultation the following week. When I walked into the office I was greeted by the young ladies at the front desk very warmly. Once I was taken to the exam room, the dental assistant welcomed me and offered me water and even offered me a pillow to support my neck while I sat on the dental chair waiting for the doctor. The wait wasn't long at all and the exam room has wonderful views from the windows. When Dr. Keating walked in, he was very welcoming as well. He asked what I was looking into and I told him what my concern was and he said he could get me in as soon as the following week, which he did. He talked to me about himself ad he was examining me. He was very thorough and very kind. He did the dental bonding the following week and I was very impressed with the results! I am extremely satisfied because it is exactly what I wanted. Be careful with this dentist!!! Your fine tooth will not be fine anymore by going to this dentist. They suggested a crown for your fine tooth. I just realized it when the insurance did not approve the claim because the insurance did not see from the x-ray why the tooth needs to be crown when the fillings could solve the problem. The dentist's excuse was because I was considering braces. Do you think the crown can not be done after the braces? Especially to a fine tooth! And I had so many issues with the crown. First it did not fit, it hurt. I had to go back there so they could fix it. Second, it fell in a week. Third, it fell again in 18 months! And the crown did not look good either. It looked different with the other teeth. This is the worst dentist that I ever visited. Lost a tooth and lost money. Worst dentist!! read more

Dr. Keating is very welcoming, attentive, and encouraging. I haven't been to the dentist for 2 years and had a lot of tartar buildup and swollen gum. The first dentist I saw insisted on doing a deep cleaning but I wasn't very sure that he did that for my sake so I decided to go for the second examination which was at Dr. Keating's office. The hygienist did a debridement on me first and told me to come back in a little over one month do check up. They didn't force me to do the deep cleaning right away. The debridement helped tremendously in reducing my puffy gums and when coming back for the checkup I was told that no deep cleaning was needed. I think people there don't try to sneak the buck out of your pocket. I felt comfortable and well taken care of. Highly recommend. read more

She was gentle, friendly and didn't throw a bunch of "hey get this special procedure" mumbo jumbo at me. Dr. Keating read my questionnaire. He actually read it. And he offered me advice on non-dental related health issues. I'm thrilled and so is my boyfriend and we'll be back in 6 months. 2015 UPDATE: So....my 6 month check up came. My mother has been seeing Dr. Keating for general dentistry (ie cleaning, etc ). He has normally been very cordial to my mother. She recently went to get a spare partial denture. After getting the dentures back, she went to try them out (January 19, 2021) and they did not fit well as there was a huge gap between the denture and the roof of her mouth as well the teeth were oversized. This would normally not be an issue as she would expect them to just send them back for a replacement . However, Dr Keating was seemingly irate with my mom that she was not comfortable with the dentures. He left and returned with a manager and explained the situation. He stated that he's been doing this for 35 years as if that explains how a third party company creating the dentures possibly created them incorrectly. At no time was my mother blaming Dr keating however, his customer service was horrible. The manager and Dr.keating left and the nurse scheduled my mom to come back today (January 20, 2021) which my mom did. Upon her arrival today, The manager nor dr keating came to speak to my mom. She spoke with the nurse and arranged a refund instead a replacement. My mom will also be seeking another dentist who knows how to address senior citizen customers who may have concerns. read more

These people are some sort of fairy godparents, I'm convinced. I've had bad teeth my whole life (genetics + being poor as a kid= sad teeth) so I had a lot of sub-par dental work and just awful experiences with dentists. My last one I felt so shamed by them that I would leave the office crying more often than not. Dr. Keating has completely obliterated my dental anxiety. It had been a couple of years since I had really been to the dentist but he examined me, listed the (multiple) issues that needed fixing, and then said "You have a beautiful smile, let's keep it that way- there are some issues here but nothing we can't fix!" I almost cried again, but from happiness. I've had a few fillings by him and one referral out for a root canal (which he apologized for having to do!) He is unbelievably gentle and thorough, tells you exactly what he's doing and when he's doing it, and through the whole thing makes you feel like a rockstar just for sitting there. Also he makes awesome dad jokes. My hygienist (Sarah- or Sara? I'm sorry, I don't know...) is great, tells me what I'm doing right as well as what I maybe could get better at, and is just really personable and nice, you feel like you're hanging out with a friend and also getting your teeth cleaned. Also Dr. Keating actually comes in to check in and take a look at my teeth every time I'm there for a cleaning, instead of me only seeing him when something's wrong. The reception staff are super helpful and polite, they will bend over backwards to make sure all your questions are answered and you have everything you need. Everything is very prompt and runs like clockwork. My appointments are usually between 3 and 3:30 on weekdays and I've literally never waited more than five or ten minutes (and that was really only once.) I seriously cannot say enough good things about this place. If you have had bad experiences or have dental anxiety, do yourself a favor and go here, you'll be really glad you did, I promise. read more

Most incompetent staff I've ever encountered. Scheduled an appointment for a bridge at least two weeks prior, I arrive on the day of my appointment and the idiot at the front desk tells me that my insurance doesn't cover the service. Hey moron, why didn't you call me to let me know?!!! Did you really think I was going to come out of pocket $1200.. tstl. I turned right around and left, a complete waste of time. BTW parking is a drag and the office looks like something out of the 80s..Not to mention his prices are egregious and seem to fluctuate. I recommend going elsewhere. read more

Stay away from this dentist. I went to have my teeth extracted for dentures. After being numbed several times I advised Dr. Keating I could still feel pain on the left side..he was able to successfully remove the teeth from my right side..I had 2 teeth left to extract..after being in the office for several hours ( my appointment was1:30, I ended up leaving at 4pm), I told him to extract..and I felt every movement made with the instruments..after pulling the tooth he wanted to continue to the second tooth..I'm in excruciating pain, crying (and I tolerate pain very well)...Dr Keating became angry and frustrated telling me "you're NOT in pain"...said it was "psychosomatic"...then started making sarcastic and nasty remarks on how i can get my tooth pulled at the hospital under anesthesia while paying thousands of dollars..I asked his dental hygienist Jalessa,who was great, what was wrong with him? Told her he's rude and unprofessional..asked if he spoke that way to all of his patients that way? I paid for my service and got out of there..needless to say I won't be returning.."Dr" Keating implied I was either lying or crazy regarding my pain; dentist like him is the very reason many AVOID the dentist.....very disrespectful..will spend my hard earned money elsewhere read more

By far the best dentist I've ever been to. Not only is Dr. Keating very nice but the entire staff is competent. The regular cleaning and check-up experience is not so painful because of their competence and gentle hands. What sets this practice apart from others I've ever been to is how you can be in and out of the door in 30-45 minutes even as a new patient. Also a plus that they give you a travel-size dental starter kit EVERY TIME you visit (those trial-size toothpastes have saved me on many flying occasions). I had to take a star off because the office is in a house and you have to either driveway juggle or street park and the fact that it's off Powder Mill Road. read more

I have been to Dr. Keating for at least 10 years and he is PHENOMENAL! I have sent so many satisfied patients to him and they all love him. His philosophy is simple - great dentistry at affordable prices. So many dentists look inside your mouth and see a gold mine: unnecessary root canals and other costly procedures and scare tactics such as "if you don't do this, your teeth will fall out". I recently saw Dr. Keating after not going to a dentist once in almost 8 years. I have an enormous fear of going to the dentist and I was absolutely terrified to step in to his office. Once I filled out my paperwork and went in to see the doctor, however, I felt very comfortable - I confessed to both the hygienist and Dr. Keating that it was my first time going to the dentist in the better part of a decade, and it didn't seem to phase them at all. Any other dentist I've ever been to would've flown into a fit of rage and begun scolding me for my poor hygiene, but they just seemed happy that I was taking good steps towards dental health, and didn't care about my past. I had an x-ray taken and an old root canal examined; the diagnosis is that the root canal needs a crown, which I'll have put in next month. He filed the tooth down a little bit to reduce the pressure on the tooth and alleviate my need to grind my teeth, which I guess is why the tooth was hurting a bit. For the first time in my entire life I left a dentist's office smiling, and this is coming from someone who cringes at the sound of a drill. I still hate getting any dental work done but I'm happy knowing that I'm in the hands of someone who will treat me well. I'm amazed that I'm able to see a dentist as qualified and kind as Dr. Keating on my employer's bottom level DHMO. What a godsend. read more

I agree 100% with the previous comment. Keating is very friendly and professional, always happy to see each patient. The other staff is exceptional and my cleanings are never as painful as previous dentists. I can't remember her name (Susan?), but she is AWESOME, super friendly and very very gentle on my teeth. And yes, their little parting gift is so great! A new toothbrush, mini toothpaste, floss, and a small bottle of Listerine. Usually very fast visits. Parking is a bit of a pain - I never park in their driveway, I always park on the side street and then walk over. The best part is that I live less than a minute from the office and I chose this dentist purely because of that, and I wound up with an exceptional practice! read more

I've gone to this office three times, and have generally had a good experience. The main issue I had was parking because as posted before, it's in a house and off of Powder Mill rd. He has even not charged me for a basic procedure of fixing a filling I had done from a different dentist. My main gripe is that I received a bill in the mail for $25 for a missed appointment. I did not receive a phone call or have any messages left. I went back to the beginning of the month to see if I had any calls from their office and I did not. The only calls I can remember which may have been them would be from unavailable numbers which I do not answer, and again, a message was not left! I called them and they said according to their records they called me three times. But again, if that is the case, I did not receive a message. With dentist offices, generally unless their is an issue you schedule your appointments 6 months in advance. This is fine, but knowing this they should at least leave a message if no one answers. I always show up for my appointments short of emergencies that cannot be helped. In fact I have never received a missed appointment fee. It would be nice if their receptionist had the decency to admit they made a mistake (that's customer service) but instead she blamed me. I stated that I had a good record of showing up for my appointments on time if I'm informed and she only stated that they called. She didn't even bother asking if I wanted to reschedule. I will probably be going somewhere else for now on. read more

This office is a welcome relief from the series of scam dentists I have seen in the recent past. My hygienist (Bonnie, I think) was so gentle during the cleaning that at one point I actually stopped her to see what new tool she was using. It turned out that she was using the same metal hook that they all use--she was just being exceptionally careful and gentle with it. Dr Greg (as he asked me to call him) is extremely pleasant and adheres to a minimally invasive policy so he's not looking for cavities just to make a buck. Wonderful Dentist and staff! State of the art office and restorations. Believe me I have had much dental work over the years with many dentists. I've had some good ones and some poor ones who caused me future problems. Dr. Keating is the best general all around dentist I've ever had, and his work as crown and implant dentist is world class because he has been practicing a long time and has kept up with technology as well. He does all the lab work himself in the downstairs of his practice. This is not the norm in dentistry because most dentists will send out work to labs and the technician does not really know your case first hand like Dr. Keating. You will get better fitting restorations and at a cheaper price. Because he knows and has kept up with this part of dentistry he would be considered an "elite" provider. You will be lucky to find a dentist this good who can do so much to take care of you as a patient. He is also a very nice and kind person and he will enjoy getting to know you. For so many of us going to a dentist can be a panicky situation but Dr. Keating has seen it all and you will be in very good hands. Have you ever had a dentist power through a procedure and refuse you anesthesia? If not, and you'd like to know what it feels like, go to Dr. Keating. First of all, let me tell you that when I first found Calverton Dental Care I was ecstatic, and referred at least two people to them; they were all very nice, to the extent that I actually sent them a thank you card in the mail after my first visit. I had never been treated so well. Well, that was about a year ago, and my most recent visit has resulted in me taking my medical records and running. I went in to have a permanent crown placed on my molar. Everything started off well enough; Dr. Keating asked me about my weekend and we made small talk. Then he proceeded to scrape my tooth to loosen the temporary crown. After about half a minute I winced in pain. He said, "Does that hurt?" I nodded yes and he said that they could use novocaine but that I wouldn't need it. I thought, OK, I can probably endure this. So he started up again. I winced. He said something like, "That doesn't hurt." This proceeded to happen several times: me wincing in pain, because it felt like a lightening bolt went straight through my jaw, and him saying things like "That doesn't hurt," and "Trust me, a shot of anesthesia is gonna hurt a lot more than this," and "Are you just reacting to the *thought* of this or the actual pain." I said, "IT HURTS." He literally said, "No it doesn't." I said, "You're not the one feeling it." He didn't stop. He kept going throughout all this. The final time I winced he dropped his floss and walked away saying, "OH COME ON!" Then he left and the hygienist, who was really very sweet, comforted me as I started to cry. I told her I didn't like being treated that way. She actually hugged me. She told me, "When he comes back in don't say anything." I wanted to say something but I was afraid he would jeopardize the procedure. So he came back in and started talking about the weather. Then he finished and walked out of the room--no acknowledgment of his behavior. After he was done I went to the front desk and told them I wanted to request my medical records. In a final attempt to try to gain some understanding of what had happened and to stand up for myself, I knocked on his office door (he appeared to be checking his email) and I said, "I don't appreciate the way you talked to me." He sarcastically said, "Sorry." I said, "You probably shouldn't tell a patient what she does and does not feel." He said, again, sarcastically, "Sorry." I left. I've tried here to relay the story exactly as it happened. I don't know what's up with this man, but as far as I can tell he is a living example of Jekyll and Hyde. The staff are 100% awesome, from the hygienists to the receptionists to everyone else. This man, however, appears to have two different personalities. I wouldn't go to any dentist who tells you he's not hurting you when in fact he is, and who refuses to stop. read more

I started going to Dr. Keating I believe as soon as he took over in Calverton Dental Care private practice. I was as well impressed with his kindness and good manners. However, it changed after number of years when I realized that he stopped paying attention to the patients and had his assistant performing most of his work. He was about to build 4 my crowns and I am not sure who made that mistake. Whether it was Dr. Keating or his assistant, Dr. Keating was certainly responsible for it. I suffered with the crowns for few years (since March 2012), as they were moving, I feared they will fall out as one of them did at the beginning. To make it worse, all the crowns were the front, upper ones and Dr. Keating made them darker color simply because it was the only color he had available on his chart. Almost instantly a serious infection developed because it was not done correctly. Dr. Keating was always telling me with his nice smile how wonderful everything was. When I had problem with lingual margins - the crowns did not fit in at all, he just grind down my lower (real healthy) teeth to make it feel better. It did not solve the problem. I was still afraid to use the front teeth, not eating certain foods and cutting up even a sandwich slices. If I had "extra" $6000 then, I would just have the entire crowns re-done by another dentist, but I could not afford much after paying $3000 with the insurance covering the second half. I had to do that anyway two and half years later when two more dentists evaluated the crowns which Dr. Keating made and told me that it was absolutely necessary and the infection progressed. (The infection - which doctor Keating and his office completely ignored for years). Dr. Keating's mistake cost me about $6000 for that I am still paying for and nearly losing my house by now. The insurance is not covering absolutely anything because Dr. Keating build the crowns in less than 5 year timeframe and I could not wait 2 more years to damage my health even more and let the infection progress, have not fitting crowns accumulate more "stuff" in the gaps. The truth is, my new crowns done by another dentist are excellent, same color as the other teeth and the perfect shape and length, it feels like real teeth and I absolutely love them, most importantly no signs of previous infection. I am so happy that I can bait any food I feel like without fear, or just simply eat. I could not do that with Dr. Keating's crowns for years!!! Now, the dark side is again, I was never in such debt as I am now. I tried to take this case to the State Dental Board (Customer's Protection Division) they took so long that I would run out of time (the time frame is 3 years in MD for lawsuits due to dental medical mistakes/negligence) so there is no chance for me to get any money back. I never thought I would sue anybody for anything, but I just feel I did not have a choice and felt that this was not right. If I make a mistake at work or neglect something I may be suspended or terminated. But, when somebody like Dr. Keating ruins somebody's life financially and personally, absolutely nothing happens. read more
