We stop in here every time we are in the area. We had a nice breakfast of eggs Benedict and country fried steak. More than enough food for us. We returned in the evening for another great meal. Greunkes is my go-to stop for FISH but I'm going to reviews their wonderful breakfast instead. I had the Eggs Benedict (I'm a EB aficionado) and was not disappointed. Stopped here for breakfast since I read from a lot of the reviews it was amazing. Although a very limited menu, whatever everybody ordered, they enjoyed it very much! I had the raspberry pancakes, as well as my daughter, and my husband had the blueberry pancakes, and it was very filling and very good. It filled us up for a very long time until dinner. If we are back in Bayfield, we would definitely return! And I have to mention, our server was amazing and everything came out hot and quick. read more

First, I'll say that our server Sheena was great! We were greeted quickly when we walked in and they immediately told us that they would get a table cleaned up for us. After reviewing the menu, we decided to go with the fish fry. Fish fry is something we usually enjoy. The portion was nice -big piece of fish and a big pile of fries. we really liked the coleslaw. The fries however, were so limp. They were hot so it's not that they had sat around but for whatever reason they were just very limp.if we had been able to get our server by the time we figured this out, we may have asked for crunchy fries, but we did not see her until it was time to leave. We were surprised when they picked up the plates that nobody asked us why there were so many fries left. I think the atmosphere was great. Wednesday night my wife and I went with great hopes. Took awhile for someone to come seat us. We sat down and ordered two beers and a pizza from next store. Was told the pizza would took 30 minutes,which we thought was fine. Thirty minutes later we were told it would be another 30 minutes. Then after having to track down our waitress because she wouldn't come by our table, we were told that they ran out of the beer that I ordered. We had the best time here last night. The fried whitefish was delicious, the ambiance was homey and friendly, and we felt right at home even though we were first time visitors. It wasn't too busy so we were able to chat with our outgoing bar server, Chris, as well as the owner of 41 years and some of the other waitstaff. We sat at the bar and just enjoyed the experience. Eating out is best when the food, the atmosphere, and the people all mesh, and Greunke's did that for us. I even bought a T-shirt to commemorate our meal! read more

Ordered chocolate malts and Reuben sandwiches, one with Cole slaw and fries. The fries were your basic frozen crinkle cuts. The coleslaw was tasteless. The Reubens would have been good if they weren't burned on one side. They had two thicker slices of corned beef rather than thin shaved. It was tender and good. The normal Thousand Island dressing served with a Reuben is homemade and loaded with horseradish. We specified that the malts be very thick. I came here for a milkshake and was blown away by the amazing service and employees, this one lady named Isabelle I think was one of the best server experiences ever!!!! Also I was blown away with one of the best bussers I've seen, I think his name was Lennox or something like that but I was amazed at how fast and coordinated he was at cleaning tables!!! We came for lunch but the spacious lot full of Porsches from Porsche Club members who were eating inside--- and drinking-- and having dessert-- and giving out prizes...... The owner was waiting outside with us, hoping it would all end soon so she could introduce customers to her legendary establishment. Finally, we entered, had Lake Trout and Whitefish, two Lake Superior gifts to the local restaurants. I however had a big problem for a cold day. The zipper on my jacket had stuck so hard it was impossible to move so I had to pull the coat over my head to get it off. I shared my problem with the owner on the way out and she happend to have a waitress who was also a seamstress. As I am on the road, I was looking for a good place to stay/eat. I walked in and I asked if there was any rooms available and how much. Judith, the owner, said wryly "Let's get you a good deal", and that she did! As it was slow, she gave me a great discount on a comfortable room with a King Bed. The room was clean, I had my own bathroom, and the bed was one of the most comfortable ones I have ever slept in. I went down for dinner, and the restaurant has amazing memorabilia from the 1950's thru 1970's. I was pleased to see Greta Garbo on the wall. :-) I had the Whitefish with Cajun seasonings with baked potato and broccoli. The food was simply wonderful. The fish was well cooked and the seasonings were delicious. I had the rhubarb pie, which was fresh and succulent. Judith is a wonderful character to talk to and clearly loves the place. If you want to get a good deal on a place and be treated like a King (or Queen) this is the place to be! Will definitely be back! read more

We were in Bayfield, WI to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and it started to storm, so we ducked into Greunke's for dinner. Judith, the owner, got us seated immediately and made our experience fantastic! We sat at the counter and met other couples and had a great time sharing stories! Came to Bayfield, Wi on a short planned mini vacation. Everything was booked even though it was during the week except Gruenke's. Harbor Inn recommended them. Judith the owner was very friendly, bold (great personality) and tryed to make everything right for us. We tryed a inexpensive room as we wanted to spend most of our money in the community. The room was small, had its own half bath but no television. (This was my fault as i misunderstood her description.) Room was clean and neat, the floor was uneven and so the bed tilted to. I think it would have been great for 1 person but not 2 as it was to crowded. The bed was uncomfortable and short. We did not eat here as the restaurant shut down - I am assuming she had no help but reopened Fri a.m. for breakfast We had found other places to eat so did not try it. Simple, clean room. Outside long stair case for access was difficult. read more

Charming from the outside and the inside is loaded with memorabilia, some antique, some not. Very friendly when we entered and the waitress was friendly....but...I inquired about the turkey which was in about 3 spots on the menu. I asked "Do you roast your own turkeys?" The waitress said yes. So I ordered. When it came time to choose potatoes I asked if the mashed were powered or real, she said real. Wellll.....when my plate came I quickly recognized the 3 identical long oval slices of turkey breast and knew it was a processed turkey breast. VERY SALTY. The potatoes were so smooth I wonder could they be real (versus powdered). Generally if you are taking the time to peel and make you leave them a bit rustic.. I complained to the waitress who owned it and said, oh you're right, I was thinking of the breast in the pan.... She suggested I mention when paying and maybe there would be an adjustment. I told the (owner?) about the very salty turkey and mentioned that I inquired before I ordered and was misinformed. Here is where they might have saved the day with maybe a 50% adjustment on my bill, but she really acted surprised and then implied they used to the breast because they ran out of the other...are you kidding?? Will not be back. Don't ask those checking out how their food was if you don't want to know...... Traveling on past glories, a key location and a lack of competition. read more

Had dinner at Greunke's our first night in Bayfield. It's a cute little inn right in the heart of downtown, and we couldn't resist trying fresh Lake Superior fish for our first meal in the little town. We are both young so we were slightly hesitant because the crowd looked a little older, but we ventured in anyhow. The hostess was somewhat friendly when she greeted us, but not overly so. We waited for bit while she organized her checks/receipts, took a check to another table, and completed a few other tasks...seems a little rude to me, but all right. They were about 60% full, and indeed most of the folks were significantly older than me and my sister. We could feel some of the patrons looking at us strangely...I think out of towners are VERY easy to spot in this little joint. We attempted to order a bottle of Pinot Noir to share, but they were out. So we went with Pinot Grigio, and it was fine - slightly overpriced for the brand, but that's sort of typical. We started with cheese curds for an appetizer, and our meals came with soup or salad. I had the Caesar salad and my sis had the beef noodle soup - all good. Each of us ordered the Whitefish dinner, with broccoli and potatoes - mine with mashed and my sister's with a baked potato. The mashed potatoes are the powdered kind, I'm almost certain of it. They had no flavor at all whatsoever, and a strange consistency. The fish and broccoli, however, were amazing. We ordered our fish cajun style and it was perfect. The broccoli was fresh and not overcooked, and I was grateful it wasn't drenched in butter like most restaurants. We couldn't have squeezed in dessert if we tried, but it sure sounded good. They have a decent selection of fresh pies, including rhubarb, strawberry, blueberry, apple... Overall Greunke's is decent. read more

Vacationing in the area, and we heard that this place puts on a fish boil. When we got there, we found out that the fish boil was canceled due to the rain, despite their menu stating that the boil happened "rain or shine. " We were seated at what we later learned was the coveted "corner table. " Despite this, we received only the minimum required attention from our waitress. The entree that we ordered came with potatoes and steamed vegetables, but our plates only had 2 or 3 florets of broccoli, which was cold. When we got out I bill, it included suggested tip levels. My wife made a comment about the "Superior Service " level, and how it wasn't that, which the waitress overheard. The waitress then confronted het about this comment, further diminishing our dining experience. read more

Came here on a recommendation from a local, it was awesome food and awesome people! We received prompt and friendly service, and was very unique! I highly recommend the whitefish livers, they were delicious and something you can't get ANYWHERE else! We also had a chance to hear the history of the recipe and how it started during WWII, and the history of the inn. Will definitely be back if we travel north again! read more

My wife and I had breakfast here twice during a 3 day visit and could not have been happier. We had biscuits and gravy and the eggs benedict both times. My wife loved the biscuits and gravy and declared it one of the best she has had and the eggs benedict were certainly some of the best I have ever had. We had breakfast in between our two visits here at the Egg Toss Bakery Café, and while it was close, we chose to come back here. If in town for only two days, do them both as you cannot go wrong. This 'Inn" was a real adventure. It's owned by a rather crusty women who's staff are all disgruntled. Rooms are small, musty, and not vey clean. Only some have AC and shared bathrooms are a mess. We received 3 different totals for our bill. The waitress actually stopped serving to check us in. It is a fun place to catch a meal, but you can do better for a clean, quiet room. read more

My brother and I stopped in to grab a quick burger before catching the shuttle (that picks up outside of Greunke's) to the BIg Top Chautauqua to catch a show. We were running really late and asked the waitstaff if they could serve us completely in 45 minutes. They looked amused by our request and assured us they could. Most of the fare at Greunke's is finer dining, but the burgers were good and cheap. The atmosphere was really fun with the covers of obscure albums on the ceiling and memorabilia on the walls. The owner teased us about being too young to know most of the musicians on the albums. When we assured her we were audiophiles and knew most of the music displayed, she came back with one of her favorite memorabilia pieces and told us a wonderful story about how she found it. She seemed really excited to share her discoveries with us. She seemed very sweet and clearly loves the place. As for our time limit to catch the shuttle, we were served in 10 minutes and on our way in plenty of time. I would definitely go back to Greunkes! read more

As others have posted, Greunke's looks like a quaint "supper club" from the outside - one that you would find anywhere in northern Wisconsin. So we thought let's try it out - it was lunch and we were hungry! It was rather busy inside as well as warm so we decided to eat out in the back on the patio. I ordered the hot beef sandwich with potatoes and gravy. My wife ordered the Whitefish sandwich. As we were waiting for our food (we had a 30+ minute wait) , we read their newspaper menu which was informative and interesting. I was surprised to see so many famous people have ate and stayed there. I was thinking - wow this must be a great place with great home cooking! Well, when the food finally came, I opened up the bread slices expecting to see "real" chunks of roast beef but instead saw three slices of processed beef. The gravy sure didn't taste like homemade and was indeed rather salty. The potatoes had such a smooth consistency that I thought for sure they were instant. My meal also came with stuffing which was ok but with a strong sage taste. We also ordered the fish sandwich was just OK. Not sure if this is the standard way of serving a fish sandwich up here (with the skin on) but it sure had a strong "fishy" taste. The bun was flattened as if placed in a press. All in all - this was a letdown and surely not what I expected from a place that has been in business for this long. We will not be back. It seems like they are touting their past accomplishments but are forgetting about the present. read more

My sister and I were planning a trip to Bayfield and thought we would try Greunke's since we got a good price on the room. Big mistake and lesson learned! You definitely get what you pay for. Neither of the ladies that checked us in and out were friendly, they were actually VERY rude. One of the gals was super defensive when I asked questions about the room and bathroom (because I really didn't know) and the other was upset when we needed to leave earlier than expected and checked out the evening prior to planned. Her comment was, "I don't even know what to say, I could have rented that rooms a hundred times over!" My response, "I don't know why you are acting like that, we've already paid for the night." She said nothing and just looked at me. We waited for more than ten minutes at the counter bar in the restaurant before anyone even acknowledged us, even though several of the staff walked past us many times, and as we were walking out someone finally asked us if we needed help (the same lady who walked past us 3 times prior to that). The room was hot from being above the kitchen, and the fan did nothing to cool down the room so we were literally sweating when trying to sleep (no air conditioning), and my bed was slanted and uncomfortable. Needless to say, we slept very poorly. The deck was directly outside our windows so there wasn't any privacy when the other patrons were on it, as we had to keep our windows open due to the heat. They do not offer any bathroom amenities other than bar soap and hand towels have to be brought back and forth from the room to bathroom. They said there was WiFi, but they did not. The carpets were stained and the floors were creaky and slanted. Other than the price and location, I have nothing good to say about Greunke's Inn. I wanted to complain to the management that the service was terrible, but they were the ones that were the problem! I would never recommend to anyone!!! read more

This place advertises itself in a way that makes it sound like a quaint bed & breakfast sort of place. But it doesn't live up to that billing. We stayed in their "wildrose" room in September 2013. It's a multi-room unit meant for families. Biggest problem: water leaking from ceiling. When we told management, their response:"I thought we fixed that last week." I guess they don't hire very good help. Other problems: king size bed is clearly on a frame that is too small for it. Sheets didn't stay on the bed. Decor is straight out of the 1980s. Shower is a "closet" that is barely big enough for an adult. Toilet is in a separate "closet". Could only find one outlet for electronics. Room didn't have any glasses for drinking water. The wildrose and several other units are actually in a building separate from Greunke's (behind a pizza parlor). They charged $146 for the room -- which I think is far, far, far above what it's worth. I tried to get our money back (in light of the leak, primarily) and the owner refused. Said she would look into it and never called me back. read more
