It is with a broken heart that I write this review. If a zero could be given, it would be what this hospital deserves. My beloved husband was lost to us during his negligent stay at this hospital, specifically Unit 53. Due to contracting COVID, My husband was admitted to the Grey Nuns Hospital on November 30th 2020.. I had no idea that would be the last day that I would touch him, have a face to face conversation, or just be with him. During the course of his stay we, his immediate family, were not allowed to visit with him at all: not in his room, not in the nursing area, not in the common areas, and not outside. Our only contact with him was via telephone. We repeatedly requested the opportunity to have an in person visit, but were repeatedly refused. When we asked why we could not have a single masked family member visit, were were continuously told "it is not allowed". On January 24th 2021, at 2:15 am a CODE BLUE was called. The code team was delayed in arriving to my husbands room, ostensibly "due to a lack of N95 masks near the room". When the code team finally arrived in my husbands room, nurses were at the bedside, However none of them were preforming CPR. The code team initiated chest compressions and the use of a bag valve mask, but to no avail - my husband was gone. HE WAS ALREADY COLD. I have no idea how long my husband may have been in distress prior to passing. I have not received a reasonable explanation as to why it took so long for hospital staff to notice that my husbands heart had stopped. I have not received reasonable explanation as to why my husbands heart rate monitor/alarm had been shut off or inoperative. I have not received a reasonable explanation as to why my husbands body was cold by the time hospital staff arrived and noticed that my husband was still, lifeless, and cold. To their shame, hospital management was allowing family members of other patients in the unit to have IN PERSON patient visits, yet our requests were arbitrarily refused. The chance to hold his hand, have a conversation looking into his eyes, and to hug and kiss him was torn away from me. The scars on my heart feel as though they will never heal. I have NEVER received a reasonable explanation from hospital management as to why we were denied visits while family members of other patients were allowed to do so. Sadly, senior management at the hospital appeared indifferent and callous when this issue was brought to their attention. I do not recommend that you allow your loved ones to be treated at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. If possible, take them to a different hospital where management cares about how patients and their families are treated. read more

Awesome OBs... terrible hospital! No one cleaned our shared room for over 24 hours... we left after 24 hours so who even knows when it was cleaned. Bloody pads, etc in the washroom and no one took out the garbage, you would think that's a hazard. Only 2 pairs of underwear was told to hand wash them, mind you this is after a c section because they couldn't provide more. It was like pulling teeth to get proper medication after said c section. When I gave birth to my son in BC we were provided medication around the clock until we left and then it was just Advil and Tylenol, which they provided for me. Also diapers, wipes, soothers, pads, etc BUT NOT HERE. The cheapest looking pads that could barely hold a light period, let alone postpartum bleeding. This hospital is the GHETTOOOOOO! Like a third world country's hospital in a poor area. All I know is I'm Glad this is my last baby and won't have to ever go back to a disgusting place like this. The nurses at the hospital genuinely DO NOT care about their patients. My nephew was in extreme pain for a lung abscess, and when he was having a pain attack, his nurse WALKED AWAY..... She didn't return for 20 min. We tried using the call bell to see if someone could help, and they turned it off without coming to see us at all. read more

Do not bring family here !!! Ever!! The emergency room is the worst you have ever seen !! Hands down . Your will wait at least 4-5 hours to see a doctor even if your pain level is so bad your can barley walk . And the parking lot is 5 bucks a hour with no daily limit . I watched one lady almost fall down trying to get to the back room where the nurse was taking her , the nurse would have seen it if she cared at all about her patient . Maybe if she wasn't 30 yards ahead of her with her back to woman paying no attention to her at All. I would have had to limp to a wheel chair just to help her. read more

This is the worst hospital in Edmonton. I've had many horrible experiences, but this last one is making me write this review. My MIL had rectal bleeding and we sat in emerg for three hours. Once I asked what the heck is going on, they took her back. She got a bed, but only to change into a gown. No one looked to see how bad the bleeding was for six hours. And that's only because she had to use the washroom at that point. They eventually ran some tests and I went home to sleep. No one called to tell us anything. I tried calling and they knew nothing. Next thing I hear, she's being sent home. We went to pick her up and asked to talk to the doctor. I started asking questions and it's like he was off in space. He answered two questions, I asked a third, then he walked away. I asked the nurse, what the heck? He said the doctor was paged. I told him he could say "I have to go" because he certainly wasn't running to that page. The guy looked high. Good Lord, next time we will do the extra drive to U of A. We still don't know much of what caused the bleeding! read more

When I was a kid I never really considered this a real hospital. I am not sure why. I just remember I always thought the U of A hospital was the main hospital and the best place to go. I have been to the Grey Nuns many times since then and most recently when a friend had a baby. I have to say the facility is really nice and not as stuffed as the U of A. This hospital actually allows for some space and isn't as packed with people. Everyone here is so friendly and all the nurses do a great job making sure the patients are looked after. I no longer question the ability of this hospital. read more

Worst hospital!! Do not take your family here. I was completely traumatized going into their emergency. The staff was insanely uneducated or just has no empathy for their patients. Some nurses were extremely unprofessional; talking about patients to other co workers right outside their room, making fun of them... and it went on. The psychiatrist woke me up at 4 am talked to me for 40 mins and suddenly I was diagnosed with something that my therapist of two years has never mentioned once. He asked me how many sexual partners I have had and once I told him he told me that I had this disorder because I have a sexual need to pleasure men. I came in for a severe panic attack. I was hospitalized in 2010 for five days, and I couldn't be more pleased with the outstanding level of care and attention I received from their dedicated and caring nursing staff. My surgeon was a total asshole and only visited me once and I wasn't coherent enough to even know he was there, but the nursing staff made my ordeal bearable. They were so kind, friendly and attentive that I couldn't ask for anything more from them. It's hard to write a review for a hospital, specifically for an emergency department, if you don't visit one very often as you don't really know what to expect and what SHOULD happen. But what I can tell you is that my experience left me a little ... wanting. I spent about 8 hours in the ER at Grey Nuns on Tuesday, January 23rd. I was brought there by ambulance from home due to severe pain. It was my first time in an ambulance and I was sort of surprised at the lack of care (initially) by the ambulance attendants. I can't say for sure, but I got the impression that they didn't believe me at first. At least, not until I started throwing up. Then they started giving me medication and asking more questions. (Did they think I was just trying to get drugs?) I did discover that taking an ambulance to the ER is better than walking in on your own. You still have to wait if you aren't an emergency, but YOU don't have to do much other than lie there in pain. The ambulance attendants have already taken all your info and pass that along to the hospital when you get there. Plus, they don't leave you until you've been officially admitted to the ER, so they're able to help you while you wait -- something I'm sure doesn't happen in the waiting room. Unfortunately, the 4 doses of pain meds while waiting didn't do anything to help the pain, but at least they tried! Once I was 'admitted' to the ER, I was initially given a cubicle and a bed. After maybe 30-45 minutes I was taken to get a CT scan and when I came back my cubicle and bed had been given to someone else and I was relegated to a chair (not even a reclining chair). I was actually more comfortable in the ER BEFORE I was admitted. I talked to about 4 different nurses who were all nice, but obviously very busy. I also talked to one doctor (before and after my CT scan) who never seemed to finish his sentences and who seemed really distracted. It was determined that I had a kidney stone and I was given some pretty strong pain meds. So strong that they made me almost completely incoherent. I couldn't keep my eyes open, let alone listen to instructions from anyone. While my pain was gone, and I had a diagnosis, that was pretty much all I had. I was there alone, so I had no one really helping me except the nurses, and there were super busy. Plus, once I had been diagnosed, they really wanted me out of there. I didn't mind this per se, I really wanted to be in my own bed, but I seriously do not believe I was in any condition to be released on my own with no assistance. The nurse provided me with a prescription to fill, but since I was unable to do that Tuesday night, she was able to provide me with some meds to hold me over until the next day (thank god). BUT, no one explained WHAT the meds were or what I should do next. No one mentioned if I was supposed to follow-up with a doctor or how long the pain would last and what I should do if it didn't go away. It wasn't really until the next day that I realize I had no real idea what happened while I was in the ER, other than the fact that I was diagnosed with a kidney stone. My pharmacist was able to explain what the drugs were for, but they obviously couldn't give me any details about my specific case. I ended up calling 811 on the Friday following my ER visit to ask the nurse what the heck I was supposed to do! She was NOT surprised by my call. She said she gets a lot of calls like mine. This seemed to indicate a systemic problem. My kidney stone finally passed, but not after I became sick on the meds and sat in a walk-in clinic for over an hour waiting to see a doctor who had no answers for me. As I look back I realize there are several things that could have made my visit to the ER more effective: 1. ERs need to send patients home with WRITTEN instructions. This is so basic, it's crazy. 2. ERs shouldn't discharge people who are on their own and have been given medications that do not allow them to function properly. I think these simple steps would not only provide a better experience for the patient but in the long run, would save AHS money. Not only did I spend 8 hours in the ER, but I also called 811 and went to a walk-in clinic. I wouldn't have had to do the last two things if I had been discharged from the ER with proper instructions. It seems so simple.... read more

She received a very rude treatment from the secretary (the lady that does the first inquiries). Utterly unnecessary!! BOO Grey Nuns! I was treated for Anemia and because of the anemia I had go receive 4 units of blood and an Iron Supplement via IV. I was admitted for 4 days. They always seemed to keep me last for things and never gave me any medication. They said that a person my age (28) could never be that nauseated or in general discomfort so they basically only prescribed me oral Tylenol. I was even getting a reaction from the second unit of blood, but the just slowed down the flow instead of giving me something like Benadryl to help with my hives and rash. After the 4th day my anemia was still horrible but they just said there was nothing else they could do any sent me on my way. Well the whole time I complained my IV site hurt and well whenever I would see the nurse (4/day MAX to just change bags, and I even called her with the call button) she would look and say the IV was fine. When she removed it she really never looked at it and just said bye. Well it's now double the size of my other hand, sore and warm to the touch, and I can feel fluid underneath it. I called the unit back (ALL BEWARE UNIT 53!) and they said basically I wasn't there patient and the IV site was documented as fine and if I want to get someone to look at it I have to go back to the emergency and wait 2-4 hours etc. They refused to take any blame or help me, even though I'd told them numerous times it hurt and even told the nurse removing it that it hurt. I will never go back to the Grey Nuns. I would avoid it if I was you! They don't care about there patients. My roommate had the start of dementia and they loved to just tease and make fun of her. Saying things like "Oh you ate breakfast already!" when she clearly didn't. I feel sorry for those people more than myself. read more

I have had to bring a family member in to emergency 3 times in the last couple of years, and I myself underwent surgery in this facility in 2012. You can check the AHS website before you choose an emergency department and it will tell you what the wait time is for all locations. In my experience, it has been quite accurate. However, I learned this weekend that if you go in with paralysis on the left side of your face, you get in pretty damn fast (not me, a family member). It is frustrating when you first get there and have to line up to speak with the triage nurse. You can end up standing there for up to half an hour if they're busy. I was a little disoriented when I arrived this weekend, and I got there after the family member had already been taken to the back. I wasn't sure where to go so i stood in the triage line. After about 10 minutes, I finally stepped aside to the admitting desk and just asked if they could give me some info and point me in the right direction. The clerk there was very friendly and helped me get to where I needed to be. We were whisked very quickly to the CT Scan and shortly after, the neurologist came to do an examination. she was incredibly thorough and I felt that we were in very capable hands. That has been my experience with all visits here. I've never felt forgotten or overlooked. No matter what we're there for, I always fee like a priority. Although nobody wants to need their services ever, I do consider myself lucky to live on the south side and have the facility available to me. I can't give the 5th star... simply due to parking. There is ample parking at this site, but the prices are ludicrous... as they are at all AHS facilities. I understand that it takes money to maintain them, but the prices are just too high. I usually try to find street parking somewhere close by. read more

My father went in Monday evening with a potential stroke. I understand covid protocols, so won't even deduct points for the fact that I did not even get to see him. My brother went in and visited when he could, and we video chatted with my father. It took 2 days to come back with stroke results because the MRI machine was broken. We got a call at 2:45am July 1, 2021 that my father had gone into a coma, and would pass within the next couple hours. We all raced there, and visited him. His stats started to drop, I notified the nurses, yes, there were 2. They said he was fine, and denied them dropping, and blamed it on his sweat. They did not call the doctor, said the neurologist wasn't coming in until later. My father stopped breathing, and the nurses continued talking at him, and checking his pulse... he was dead. I had to tell them that he stopped breathing and had started turning yellow. They panicked and then said yeah, have some time with him. I watched my father die, while the nurses could not have done worse. The entire time he was there, I called several times a day, whilst my brother was there in person. No 2 people gave us the same information, there was a HUGE lack of communication there. I am extremely irate with this experience. It scares me to think what else they did wrong, and if my father could still be with us. read more

It's great having such professional staff in a top notch facility located so conveniently in the Mill Woods community, I just hope they can keep pace with the growth, and if expansion is needed, that the Capital Health Authority provide the necessary resources to do so! No one in my extended family has experienced any problems during the child-birth process. Two of my cousins were born prematurely and the staff took great care of them when they were born. My friend had her baby here, and I was really impressed with both the facilities and the care that she was given. I came to visit my friend in the afternoon, and she had her own room, with her own tv and bed and everything. The room was big enough for a couple people to crowd into, but not so large that it lost its intimacy. Honestly, for a hospital room, it really was nice. My boyfriend did some of the renovations to the maternity ward here at Grey Nuns and so he showed me some of the state of the art delivery rooms. They are pretty high end looking. The staff were very friendly when we were there and they were very courteous of my friends needs. All in all, a good place to be cared for. read more

The reception/triage nurses you'll meet here are absolute demons. I've never had such a bad experience with nurses before. I went in hospital in SEVERE abdominal pain(not my average cramps at all because I wouldn't miss 3 days of work and wait at the hospital for 7 hours just because of cramps). I was vomiting as well and explained all my symptoms. The reception nurse didn't seem to take me serious at the moment either. 4 hours later I go stand in line again to ask why people who came in after me were being taken in before me. First I'm getting stares from the reception nurses and they're all talking to each other but no one wants me to come up and talk to them then the initial nurse I talked to walks out of that area and tells a different nurse to help me. I then get told that there is a "priority score" and that my symptoms aren't serious enough. After I explain to the nurse that I'm still in severe pain and that these aren't my typical cramps I finally get called it. One again, while I'm waiting I'm sitting in the room for about an hour before getting helped. read more

This is a good hospital. If you have to go Emergency though, be prepared for a long wait. Pretty much any hospital you go to will have a long wait for Emergency, but I remember this one being looooooong. The facilities are pretty nice though and so are the staff. I don't find this hospital as confusing as other ones either. For some reason, I can actually find my way around Grey Nuns where as other hospitals - signs or not - I get lost. I was brought to the Grey Nuns by ambulance from Elk Point Alberta. I arrived at the Grey Nuns and was immediately taken up to my room and made comfortable. My nurse "Middin" was amazing, one of the most caring nurses I have ever dealt with. Met with Dr. Strange, the next day who was also amazing. Explained the surgery and off we went. My uncle emergency department journey in this hospital is so poor!!! I find the triage nurse's assessment skill today (6/21/18 1445 second window) to be very poor. When she was asking us questions, she wanted to pertain the question to be answered so it wont triggered to be emergent. If stroke symptoms and with complaint of chest pain do not warrant emergency, so what is then? Almost 2 hrs of wait is unacceptable knowing that we are dealing with chest pain and slurring of speech. read more

The Nurses don't care about patients' concerns and also always have a gossip with each other's staff about patients' health issues. And they don't care about patients' belongings if they might be lost or stolen. What is the job of being a Healthcare worker in a Hospital? They're fucking received the right amount of payroll every twice a month and they didn't do their fucking job properly. It needs more improvement and they should be done their best in this job. Not being an asshole every time. When a patient asked a question about their health concerns, especially in Psychiatry Unit the staff was asking it back the same question as what the patient said. Just because the patients are having a psychological disorder they are always so rude to the patients. I think all of the staff in this hospital need more education on what kind of degree they've studied. They are not professional services workers they are like fucking assholes all the time. read more

The hospital emergency is certainly well used and far too small for the numbers seen on the day we were there. Add to that there is absolutely no patient confidentiality as the doctors and nurses go from one patient to the next talking about the diagnosis/symptoms, pain, medications, test results. We heard one elderly lady being assessed for her orientation. Another couple getting feedback about her pregnancy. Another guy about his infection and treatment. Plus a mental health patient being questioned about how much he drank. It's like the staff have given up on affording someone privacy/confidentiality. Then the washrooms were absolutely disgusting especially for a hospital. We were there for over 6 hrs and they were not cleaned once and probably not for the afternoon/evening. read more

I've been a patient at the Grey Nuns twice in the past week, for two very different reasons. My first visit was to have a day procedure done. I didn't know exactly where to go so I asked the lady at the info booth and she directed me and was quite pleasant. Turns out it was just down the hall so I didn't have to go far. The hospital is not as big as the U of A so it's not confusing to get around. When I get there, the nurse who gave me the forms and everything was also quite nice. I waited about 15 minutes past my appointment time to go in. After I got to my bed, I waited about another 20-30 minutes, but this didn't bother me because I saw my doctor going back and forth and I knew there were a couple people ahead of me. I was going to be put under and I was a bit nervous since I'd never done that before. The first nurse who prepared me for my IV was incredibly smiley and put me at ease. The second nurse who actually did the IV was also nice, but scolded me for being dehydrated (hard to get a vein) even though I wasn't allowed to drink water for 10 hours! Once I got into the procedure room, everything went smoothly while I was still awake. Nurses and doctor were, again, pleasant and professional. I passed out and woke up in my bed 45 minutes later. The funny nurse wheeled me out and I was on my way! No problems at all. My second visit was to the ER. I broke my toe a few days prior and, being the ridiculous klutz that I am, I stubbed it again and had to go for an X-ray to make sure everything was still in place. I got there around 11am and waited in the first waiting room for about an hour. I was then taken to another, smaller, more cramped waiting room. It seemed like an area for people who did not have serious enough problems to be put in a bed. Some people waiting for the doctor, some waiting for results. It was pretty stuffy and mildly uncomfortable. I waited in there for about another hour before I saw the doctor and got sent down to X-ray. The X-ray techs were great. The doctor I saw was actually pretty funny and lighthearted. All in all I was there for three hours, which isn't too bad considering that my issue was probably pretty low priority for an emergency room. I've driven others to the ER here before and the wait time can be long and the waiting room isn't very big, but that's just something to be expected at any hospital. In summary, all of the staff I dealt with on both occasions were at the least professional and at best friendly, funny and put me at ease. The hospital is not confusing or complicated to get around, and it seemed clean. When I was there the first time I saw the nurses wash their hands many, many times. read more

I go to the stroke clinic in the grey nuns as my neurologist Dr Scozzaffava is located there. He is absolutely one of the most amazing neurologists I have ever encountered. I have been seeing him for many years and he is one of the most thorough, calm, caring, considerate, legitimate professionals i have ever dealt with. He legitimately cares about how you feel and what is going to happen to you. He makes a point to follow up and is very gentle when he has to take a hands on approach.I have fibromyalgia as well and he has never caused me any physical pain when doing palpitations during assessments or tests. He genuinely cares and it shows. This doctor will go above and beyond to make sure he has covered any possibility when it comes to finding a possible illness, and he will do it with a smile. If hes having a bad day, he wont take it out on you. Always professional. I cant say enough positive things about him. Im Incredibly fortunate to have him on my side. :) read more

I went into the emergency at the Grey Nuns with a referral from the doctor I saw at the U of A. I waited in line for triage for about 20 minutes and had to sit in the SUPER SMALL waiting room but as soon as I got in, the doctors were immediately helpful and got everything organized FAST for the surgery I did not know I was going to have! Dr. Rivet & Dr. Brown were fantastic! Along with Dr. Bow and the attending nurses and anesthesiologist. They made my first surgery a success. So happy with the care I got at the Grey Nuns! read more

I'm currently waiting for the rest of the saline in this IV bag to enter my body and I'm having a great time. My pounding migraine went from a 10 to a 4 and all the doctors and nurses have listened to me well. Waiting times weren't bad either. Definitely recommend getting a bolus here. Pretty A+ experience. One of the worst service in emergeny section. Very rude the way of talk. And we were wait 7hours. They didnot call. More then 80 patients are leave afyer we came. I undedatand emergency people is important. It means other for useless or what?? My wife got very severe head pain. But they never care about. And we leave after 8hours.
