For first time in over 30 years of showing both as an exhibitor and leader had many pigs not make…read moreweight this year. Decided to pick up a good number from this up and coming breeder from one of their sales in 2016 and ended up being disaster. Not one pig made weight for fair it was purchased despite breeder stating specifically they would be fine for those time periods. Fortunately got to bump some to later fairs but lost ton of money on the extras that did not get to be sold through auction. No help from Mark or Sandy, very arrogant people. Russell is probably lot nicer to deal with but was busy with his wedding at time and not available. Would just suggest that if you are going to use them know that pigs have very slow growth rate. Despite several extra rounds of deworming, plus changing feeds (Showrite ended up working best on these but I in no way am endorsing this brand, just worked better than Showtech or other Assoc brands on this set), plus rounds of antibiotics (Draxin, Baytril as needed) these pigs just did not perform. Would suggest if you need to use this breeder to buy them a lot older/bigger than you normally would. Probably need to be 7-8 months instead of 5-6 by weigh in date to make it. Very disappointing experience for our group. What made me decide to post is I also ran into few other familes from neighboring counties at other fairs with same issue from Ottenwalter this year. We had other pigs from on two other sites from other stock this year all very healthy. Even pushed a pig to make weight before 5 months of age to replace one of these. For all the hype very expensive pigs that did not perform and no mercy/help from the breeder. Disappouinting. Good pig people are better than this.
