Oh my... what a fantastic experience this was! All the staff were extremely friendly and funny! Definitely made me feel as if we've been coming here for a long time. A much better vibe than our previous eye doctor in Leawood. Let me start by saying Dr. Niebuhr is amazing! I told her my complaints of wearing contacts and how they felt on my eyes. She did her magic (took measurements) and gave me a sample pair and the rest is history. Apparently I have different vision per eyeball and more of an astigmatism on my left. So far so good, I don't even feel them in my eyes at all! My previous doc said I had the same vision in both eyes but for whatever reason i still had the same complaints that my eyes just wouldn't cooperate and I would get headaches frequently while wearing contacts. Now I know why! ‍ Luckily a friend recommended Grin eye care a few months ago and I think I found our new family eye doctor! I'll be sure to follow up if things start to go south... read more

I have been going to Grin Eye Care for years now. I have seen Dr Johnson for my eyes since I was in middle school. It is always great to see her and it's like catching up with an old friend. I have gone to Dr Grin for my lasik and he did a fantastic job. I no longer have to wear contacts and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The staff is always nice and friendly and I can typically get in when I need to. They do get booked up fast so I would make an appointment a couple of months in advance. read more

Was told about the mono vision option after cataract surgery. Dr Wong is so nice and excited and knowledgeable about This procedure I was sold. I did Not do my due diligence. It was a really long period of time. Lots of Extremely painful adjustments that they don't tell you about. In the long run, after $6,000, the procedure was unsuccessful. Again, they never warned me that was possible. Went in for my last check up today after more than a year and I got checked in right away but waited 1hour and 15 minutes with no one checking in to acknowledge me waiting and I just left. If they recommend this procedure please do your own research. I would Never recommend this practice. read more

I refuse to go to Grin Eye Care after a bad experience back in 2020 but my husband has continued to use them. He is slowly finding out why I refuse to go there. Hubby called this afternoon (around 2:30) to set up a routine appointment. He tried on one phone and was put on hold 15 minutes. He kept holding on that line but then tried them on a different phone and got put on hold there also. They came on after a few minutes and said "will need to put you on hold" and my husband told them "I've been on hold for 15 minutes on another phone". She said she'd return soon. Which she did but never apologized for the wait. My husband asked her WHY the long wait to talk to someone. She told him that she was checking someone out, making an appt for someone AND trying to answer the phone lines - AND that she was the only one there. It was NOT lunch time. She said they are short-staffed and she's doing it all. WOW. All of the doctors at this facility and ONLY ONE to make appointments, check out AND answer the phone lines? This isn't the first time my husband's gotten poor customer service there but it may very well be the LAST time he goes to Grin Eye Care. In fact, he asked me to write this review in order to warn others that the customer service is HORRIBLE there. read more

I've been going to Grin Eye Care for 8+ years now and have always had great service. Everyone is very accommodating and helpful right as you walk in, and the Doctors are very kind. The environment seems positive and friendly, and helps the patient feel comfortable and genuinely cared for. I've never had any issues with waiting too long to be seen, and the appointments are always run productively. At times I'll go in even with small eye issues, and feel prioritized as a patient regardless of how big or small the eye care problem may be. Overall the Doctors are very knowledgable and professional. I would very much recommend Grin Eye Care for your optical needs. Absolute worst eye care facility I have ever been to in my 70+ years. Very long wait times to see doctors only to have another long wait in the room. When the doctor came in she reviewed the results of the scans and then proceeded to type one finger at a time due to long nails. She indicated that it would be in my best interest to take supplements due to possibility of macular degeneration. She then proceeded to give me a sales pitch for some expensive supplements that "are not available over the counter". She gave me reasons why over the counter drugs were very inferior. I had an eye exam at Grin Eye Care and I won't be going back. The front office staff was very friendly and courteous, as was the technician who handled my initial care, but the doctor I saw was not good at all. I got in within an acceptable time of my appointment and technician took some initial readings and then put eye drops in to dilate my eyes and said the doctor would see me shortly. I waited 5 minute, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, finally after waiting 30 minutes I walked and asked if they had forgotten about me. After waiting another couple of minutes the doctor said she would be with me in a bit. When she came in, there was no apology for the extremely long wait, just an excuse that the wait time was normal as they want to let your eyes dilate. I told her that that Tech had not mentioned that and if they would said something, that would have helped a great deal. Still I feel that waiting 30 minutes to let my eyes dilate is unacceptable. Also at the end of the exam the doctor said I needed bifocals. I mentioned that I could read just fine with my current pair of glasses. She said that with the new prescription that would not be possible. Wanting to get out of there I didn't argue. I took my prescription and went elsewhere to get my glasses. When I ordered my glasses I left off the bifocal and just went with regular glasses. Guess what...I can read fine with them. No bifocals were needed. In my opinion, she just wanted to add bifocals because that would mean more money for them if I purchased my glassed from them. Very poor customer service from the doctor means I will be looking for a new optometrist. read more

I came to Grin Eye Care because I was referred to Dr Wongs for cataract surgery by my optometrist. Everyone on the staff was warm, caring and helpful. I felt like I had walked into an alternate universe (heaven). It was far different than my normal everyday experience with doctors and staff. I was confident in Dr Wongs after meeting with him. The surgery went smoothly. The only glitch was with billing. You are billed by Grin as well as the surgery center. It was confusing. Otherwise the experience was excellent. read more

I have to say that I am not much of a fan of Grin. I have been experiencing an eye issue going on a month now. The treatment plan has pretty much stayed the same and progress has been agonizingly slow. I will say I was out of town for a bit of this time for the holidays and a family concern, but the doctor was well aware of my plan so if they didn't feel the course of treatment would suffice, it probably should have been different. The first visit, I felt like the nurse was guiding the doctor as to what to look for... yikes! I feel like I made many visits, spent hundreds of dollars, and made very little progress. At my last visit the doctor just seemed to give up and referred me elsewhere for a second opinion. Not much for building confidence in what we have done for a month, especially after being told I probably won't regain perfect eyesight in the eye. I probably should have went with one star, but I think Grin would be acceptable for a basic eye examine. Also, there is a nurse there that I have had experience with before at a totally different doctor type office and she is just fabulous, so much so she deserves a star herself. I have a few other comments about the doctor I saw, but they probably are not Yelp appropriate. I would also add, plan on spending a tremendous amount of time here, like hours, for each visit. They overbook, severely overbook, which may be why the care isn't up to par. read more

I sent my complaint letter to Grin Eye Care and asked for a letter specifically from Dr. Grin and he was so gracious with what he wrote. He refunded my co-pay and cleared my remaining $40 bill. I wanted to be sure that Dr. Grin himself saw my letter and was aware of what happened to me. I also wanted him to discuss what had happened WITH Dr. Gershen. He assured me that he did, and apologized for the bad and scary issue. Dr. Grin seems to be the kind of doctor that very much cares about his patients as well as all of the patients that come into his business. I thank you, Dr. Grin for your reply letter and the refund. Dr. Wongs performed a cornea transplant on my left eye and brought it back to 20/20 vision. I was astounded. I had a cornea transplant in my right eye about 15 years ago and ended up with double vision and glasses. That's why I waited 15 years to get the other eye done. They don't assess charges correctly, don't properly bill your insurance, won't send an itemized bill of charges and payments when requested and then send your account to collections because they haven't done their job!! An optometry consortium, a mall food court of optometrists. Like food courts, all new employees, fresh out of school. Like the fast food chains they are not concerned with quality just quantity. Appointment at 9, they'll see you at 10. Any concerns or questions, they brush off and push you into their way of thinking so they can get to the next patient. Had my Eye Surgery appointment rescheduled by Grin twice, with no concern for my time or schedule. No apology or even a sign of care. Pushed out 1 MONTH, then changed from a morning appointment to the afternoon. When trying to cancel and request a refund, non-refundable. So I'm stuck using them. I hope you go elsewhere for your needs. Look at their rating graph, definitely on a down trend in recent years. read more

As I write this, my daughter and husband have been waiting over an hour in a room to see Dr. Berwald. I wish this was the first time, but this is the norm for seeing Dr. Berwald. Don't schedule so many patients if you cannot see them in a timely manner. You ask us to be on time for appointments, yet you are continually late in seeing patients. It is disrespectful of our time. As a person who has worn either eye glasses or contacts for over forty years, I have had extensive experience with eye care professionals. Grin Eye Care is top notch. I have not had extended wait times prior to seeing the optometrist; however, don't plan on a quick in and out as the exam is quite thorough. The staff has always been courteous, professional and efficient when performing screenings and measurements before I see Dr. Johnson. I have also had occasion to see Dr. Grin for other than routine eye exams and received stellar care; his diagnosis and treatment resolved my issues. The billing process here is atrocious. My health insurance covers my eye exams completely, NO COPAY. In fact, they didn't charge me copay when I showed up. A month or so later, I receive a bill. They want a $25 copay which is *not* correct. I looked at the bill. As someone else has mentioned, *they do not bill the insurance company correctly*. Instead of billing Cigna, they billed VSP (the latter is for paying for glasses). At this point, I'm going to look for another eye doctor. Others here have mentioned that the people in their office don't know how to bill correctly, and this has been proven to my very directly. I took the $25 hit and considering they'll never receive money from me again, it's a small price to pay to get away. By being idiots, you lost more than you gained. read more

Let me just start by saying, if you've ever thought about getting lasik done- just do it. Dr. Wongs will change your life. I have had bad vision since I was a child and recently had the opportunity to get lasik done by him and I could not be happier. I've been contemplating it for years but couldn't find the right surgeon that made me feel comfortable enough to get it done. Other places during my consultations made it feel like a business transaction and were very pushy and made the whole process uncomfortable to me. Dr. Wongs and his team actually care about you and make sure you know it. The whole lasik procedure was extremely quick and easy and it was nice to know they have some of the most updated machines in Kansas City. The actual procedure was done in under an hour and I was driving and went to work the next day! The nurses are always super nice and informative, they even gave me a countdown and kept me updated during surgery which made the whole procedure go by much quicker. I don't have to fumble around for glasses or worry about contacts anymore and it feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like my bad vision and dry contacts overshadowed everything I did before. Dr. Wong's handiwork has seriously changed my life. I cannot say it enough. My wife and I have been treated at Grin Eye Care in Olathe for several decades now and we have always been treated well. I usually expect some wait time at all physicians office, but I have never had a wait time problem at Grin Eye Care. Dr. Grin and his associate doctors I have experienced have always been marvelous, as have been the great medical assistants (nurses?) as well as great clerical staff. In addition, for years Dr. Grin and some staff have each year spent time in various countries providing free eye care for disadvantaged people and therefore greatly improved the lives of countless people. Six months ago I had a chemical infiltration into both eyes temporarily blinding me for 3 days. During that time Dr. Wishna treated me rinsing my eyes repeatedly until my sight returned. Her skill & compassion following my accident went beyond what we've come to expect in similar situations.
