So, Brill Eye Center…read more.. I was a customer off and on for a number of years. The off part was because I was unemployed for a bit and didn't have vision insurance, but when I was working this was my place. I liked that the clinic offered Saturday morning hours and thought the doctor did a thorough job performing his eye exams. Now, some of the tests he performed weren't covered by my insurance and I didn't know this until I went to pay, but for the most part those tests weren't super expensive and I thought they were good tests to have. So, what happened? One of the employees lost it, that's what happened. I called in to get a copy of my prescription because I used all of this year's insurance money on new frames and lenses, but I needed contact lenses. I normally bought them through the eye center however it was less expensive to go through an online retailer until my insurance year flipped and I could use those funds here. Apparently to get a copy of your prescription you need a contact lense prescription, not just a regular prescription and I had "declined" my option to get this test. I was never offered this test. I'd been a customer for years and never heard of this test. I had previously talked to the doctor about my contact lenses, but didn't know there was a separate test because it had never been offered. Anyway, while trying to figure out what the woman I was speaking with was talking about our conversation went to civil, to strained to her screaming at me over the phone. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I did end up talking to Dr. Brill after this and while our conversation was mostly civil, I will maintain that I was never told about or offered a contact lense eye test and I also felt like I was being mocked a bit for wanting to get contact lenses at a less expensive option than this office. He also blamed the behavior of the woman I spoke with on her being a millenial, which honestly didn't sit well with me. I do think for the most part this is good office and Dr. Brill is a good doctor however I work really hard for my benefits and I am not going to spend my money at a place that treats me this way. If you're looking at this office, please do your research. Ask up front whether all of the tests are covered by your insurance and don't you dare let them disrespect you while you're doing it.

My only concern are some of the younger staff that help at the front desk are not as professional but many of them don't stick around for long. I would highly recommend going there. They have good frames for glasses but if you are on a budget maybe get the frames but get the lenses else where. If you are not as concerned for a budget or don't get your lenses changed as often I say splurge and just get it all done there.

I originally had gone to my previous optometrists office however based on the price they quoted per pair $600 for lenses only it was clear based on the sales associates indifference they weren't really interested in my business. I removed their Yelp review because I could no longer stand behind the level of customer service. Enter Fairway Eye center. Some years ago I had done business with Fairway and remembered the excellent customer service. In fact the only reason I really switched was they didn't have the frames I wanted. I digress. So after getting a completely outrageous quote I called Fairway and asked for Tina. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out she was still there. I explained my dilemma and all I can say is that Fairway came to the rescue once again. The prices were completely reasonable and Fairway stands 100% behind their product and customer service. I won't be going to anyplace else again. The customer service can't be beat!

I was not advised when or how my contacts would be available to top it all off I had to ask for a paid receipt and was met with "oh you want a receipt?" Seriously, if it's not written down it didn't happen. I called to check the status of my contact and was told "You're in a wait status" and that they should have already been received. I asked if I had to go to the office or will the contacts be delivered to my home, the gentleman said "oh you should have been given the choice at the time of the order if you wanted them mailed to your...and of course I was not given that or any other option. In short, not a happy camper!!!!! I would have given a 2.5, but the Dr. and techs were nice and proficient for the most part, one of the techs seemed new and struggled through the screening.

In late 2023 an ophthalmologist told me that I had cataracts in both eyes, both needed astigmatism…read morecorrection and that Medicare does not pay for that portion of cataract surgery. Since I have a secondary wraparound type health insurance plan, that pays my deductibles, co-pays, & co-insurance, I contacted my insurer to see if they would reimburse me for this expense. They told me that even though this procedure was not a covered expense by Medicare, they would reimburse me for any out-of-pocket expenses for low-astigmatism correction portion of each surgery, if and only if, they received Medicare MSN denials for this expense. I began to keep a log including dates, of each conversation with my secondary insurer, KC Eye Clinic and eventually with Medicare. In 2024 I contacted the manager of KC Eye Clinic billing dept. She told me that if their eye surgeons recommended that procedure, she would file claims to Medicare in order for me to receive such Medicare denials. So, I met with a KC Eye Clinic surgeon and did have cataract surgeries with low-astigmatism correction. I paid them $1,500 out-of-pocket for that portion of each surgery. I continued to contact my secondary insurer to verify that they would reimburse me for these out-of-pocket expenses. In fact, I contacted them seven more times in late 2024 and 2025 to verify that yes, I would be reimbursed, under their "coordination of benefits" rules. After I received Medicare MSN's that showed "information requested was not received", I contacted KC Eye Clinic billing mgr. about this additional information that Medicare needed. Each time, on 10/9/24, 11/12/24, 7/29/25, 8/25/25,9/4/25, and in person on 9/5/25. I increasingly determined that I was being very much misled about her efforts to give corrected information to Medicare. On 9/5/25 when I met in-person, she did not even want to look at my Medicare MSNs to see or acknowledge that Medicare had asked for additional information for months. I contacted Medicare four times and was told each time that they could not process my claims correctly without additional documentation from KC Eye Clinic and that any corrected claim must be filed within one year of the date of service (timely filing). And that all the provider needed to do was to contact the Medicare Provider line, authenticate the call and ask for a two-digit "modifier" to correct each of my claims. On 9/12/25 I spoke with the practice manager at KC Eye Clinic and told him that if I missed timely filing with Medicare, I would certainly give KC Eye Clinic a negative google review. He sent a couple of creepy emails. The following are excerpts: "You might see me being unprepared or inexperienced, but all the authentication numbers are right in front of me and, again, they are on the Medicare document that they sent. I can feel them smiling on the other end because if I can't authenticate, they don't have to talk to me." And also, for me to get reimbursed by my insurance company is "like, breath underwater or flap your arms and fly across the room and we'll send you $3,000." The practice manager told me that they sent corrected claims to Medicare with the correct two-digit modifier. However, weeks later when I contacted Medicare about this, the rep told me she and even a second rep looked and no such correction was ever filed. Also, even if it was filed that I likely missed timely filing by two weeks! It appears that in spite of my best efforts and those of my secondary insurer to get my Medicare claims processed correctly, I will not be reimbursed by my secondary insurer, because I am unable to provide them with proper Medicare denials. I have clearly never run across anyone in the medical profession as obstinate and unhelpful as the manager of the billing department at KC Eye Clinic. I think that all along the manager of the billing dept. and later the practice manager at KC Eye Clinic felt that I considered myself special for simply asking them to file corrected claims. That should be their job!

These are injections directly into the eye, so feeling comfortable and confident with the physician performing them is extremely important. A few months ago her regular doctor was on leave, and she was treated by another physician in the practice. The difference in her experience was very noticeable. This doctor took time to explain the procedure, rinsed her eyes afterward, and my mother left with significantly less pain and fewer side effects than she normally experiences. Because of that experience, my mother has asked multiple times to switch to that doctor. Each time she has been flat-out denied the request. This is incredibly frustrating and difficult to understand, especially since the doctor she prefers is reportedly accepting new patients. My mother is an older patient, and navigating repeated denials and administrative hurdles like this has been very stressful and discouraging for her. Patients should have a reasonable ability to choose the physician they feel most comfortable with for an ongoing treatment like this, especially when injections into the eye are involved. These treatments happen every 4-6 weeks and they are scary and uncomfortable. Instead, she has repeatedly been told she cannot switch doctors within the practice. After asking multiple times and being denied each time, she now feels stuck continuing care with a doctor she doesn't feel comfortable with, which is a very difficult position for a patient receiving eye injections every few weeks. At this point we are strongly considering moving her care to a different retina specialist outside of KU altogether. It's disappointing that a large medical system would refuse to work with a patient on something as reasonable as choosing the physician who is injecting medication into her eyes. I truly hope someone from patient relations or clinic leadership will review this situation and reconsider. I am giving two stars instead of one because there is a front desk gentleman who has always been very kind to my mother and has helped put her at ease several times. Unfortunately this situation is clearly outside of his control, but his kindness has not gone unnoticed.

To make things worse, neither Dr. Chappell nor his employer, Moyes Eye Center, have taken any responsibility for their actions, despite Dr. Chappell admitting this under oath during his deposition: Q. A. Through many discussions and many evaluations, we have possible intraocular injection of medication as the most likely cause, with a number of other possible causes. I have been forced to hire an attorney and this matter remains unresolved, with Dr. Chappell denying my claims and offering me no compensation for my injuries.
