I've been to Grit Coffee-Crozet a few times because I work in the area. Both times, I've found myself very disappointed by the quality of the coffee. I've ordered both regular and decaf coffee and both left something to be desired. Next time I want coffee, I will drive a little further and go to Mudhouse.

Iced coffee comes in a jar when you order "for here."

Bad coffee. Period. Baked goods are tasty, but bad coffee at a coffee shop?! Yep. In my opinion, that's Grit Coffee.

Coffee was a good cold brew. Place was empty except a group with children. They were way too loud to enjoy myself.

My friend and I stopped by this past Saturday morning to grab coffee for ourselves and our other friends. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but dang, Mudhouse is expensive. It shocked me to see DC pricing, if not more pricy. I was feeling a pour-over this morning, so I asked the baristas what they recommended since I was looking for their wildest offering. If I remembered correctly, they suggested one of their current single origins, Costa Rica - Finca Las Torres Honey Process (tasting notes: candied plum, red apple, honeycomb). The pour-over was $8, which is crazy. I should have just bought a bag of beans (which is 3x more expensive), and I would have been able to make 20 cups for myself. The pour-over was good though, bright and fruity, and I enjoyed drinking it even without a pastry. I picked up a different pour-over (also a single origin and was $8) and matcha ($7.75 for a small) for a couple friends. They both enjoyed their drinks (the matcha was very green and tasted legitimate) but thought it was more expensive than it should be. Overall, still a solid coffee roaster in the area with a homey and spacious interior -- just a bit too expensive for coffee and tea.

Reunion has been a breath of fresh air - really good espresso drinks, pastries, and breads. To be 100% honest, Crucible's coffee is better, but their pastry selection is minuscule and they can feel a bit stuffy. Reunion's pastries are good, though I wish they had more French-inspired things like pain au chocolat, croissants, or even soft cinnamon rolls, but I feel they excel more at the breads side of baking. I got a mini sourdough loaf once and it was excellent! Service is always friendly and happy, and the shop itself is cute, but there isn't much space inside. I'm all for tables outside, but there's not much real estate there either, especially on a busy morning. I think a small adjustment to flow could make it easily sit a couple cafe tables inside without it feeling so crowded. I just miss the days of being able to hang out and have good coffee and snacks while doing some work on a laptop. Seems like most businesses would rather have you out the door instead. I have high standards for bakeries and cafes, and Reunion meets most of them. They're now my favorite place to go in the mornings in Staunton... if they're open. I would go there much more often if I could actually eat my breakfast there instead of having to get back in my car or sit in the blistering summer heat.

I thought about ordering the quiche to go for lunch on the train but it was way too big for one person and would likely be a bit messy. However there are some things that are off about this place. Firstly whenever I order a coffee they'll give it to me in a random cup. Sometimes a mug, others a paper cup and even a glass cup. Not necessarily bad just odd. What is odd though is the employees reaction to not getting tips. They will give you nasty looks and lower quality service for not tipping on a 5 dollar coffee. I have one friend who was even made fun of. They will go as far as making fun of him for being gay when he isn't just for not tipping. Also, the PB&J bar is stupid good and their iced dirty chai lattes with almond milk are stupendous!!! Two must haves when visiting. Go enjoy it as much as I always do when I am in town.
