I've been to Grit Coffee-Crozet a few times because I work in the area. Both times, I've found myself very disappointed by the quality of the coffee. I've ordered both regular and decaf coffee and both left something to be desired. Next time I want coffee, I will drive a little further and go to Mudhouse.

Iced coffee comes in a jar when you order "for here."

Bad coffee. Period. Baked goods are tasty, but bad coffee at a coffee shop?! Yep. In my opinion, that's Grit Coffee.

Coffee was a good cold brew. Place was empty except a group with children. They were way too loud to enjoy myself.

My friend and I stopped by this past Saturday morning to grab coffee for ourselves and our other friends. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but dang, Mudhouse is expensive. It shocked me to see DC pricing, if not more pricy. I was feeling a pour-over this morning, so I asked the baristas what they recommended since I was looking for their wildest offering. If I remembered correctly, they suggested one of their current single origins, Costa Rica - Finca Las Torres Honey Process (tasting notes: candied plum, red apple, honeycomb). The pour-over was $8, which is crazy. I should have just bought a bag of beans (which is 3x more expensive), and I would have been able to make 20 cups for myself. The pour-over was good though, bright and fruity, and I enjoyed drinking it even without a pastry. I picked up a different pour-over (also a single origin and was $8) and matcha ($7.75 for a small) for a couple friends. They both enjoyed their drinks (the matcha was very green and tasted legitimate) but thought it was more expensive than it should be. Overall, still a solid coffee roaster in the area with a homey and spacious interior -- just a bit too expensive for coffee and tea.

They had a nice selection of both iced and hot coffee, espresso drinks, teas, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries. I got a pumpkin spice latte and it was delicious. Wonderful pancakes, egg sandwich, and avocado toast. My eggs were a little past over-easy but it was the only thing that wasn't perfect (and the host offered to have them redone but I said it was fine). We got a blueberry cream cookie and a lemon bar as an appetizer because sometimes we're a little extra and they were SO GOOD! I love a good pastry case and theirs was top notch. There were plentiful refills on the coffee (nice and hearty brew). Our server was so attentive and nice that we tipped extra. Just an all-around surprisingly excellent experience here.

That tells me I've discovered something, since locals know the best places to go. I changed my plan from a soup and sandwich to a sandwich with a side based on my (outstanding) servers' recommendation. I selected the 'Monaco' but all the options looked good (and I love the names). Since it's a coffee shop I stayed for a cappuccino, which was served in an adorable tiny cup Great service. Not a fancy place but doesn't pretend or need to be.

However there are some things that are off about this place. Firstly whenever I order a coffee they'll give it to me in a random cup. Sometimes a mug, others a paper cup and even a glass cup. Not necessarily bad just odd. What is odd though is the employees reaction to not getting tips. They will give you nasty looks and lower quality service for not tipping on a 5 dollar coffee. I have one friend who was even made fun of. They will go as far as making fun of him for being gay when he isn't just for not tipping. Also, the PB&J bar is stupid good and their iced dirty chai lattes with almond milk are stupendous!!! Two must haves when visiting. Go enjoy it as much as I always do when I am in town.
