I've been to Mudhouse once in Richmond and was glad to have found another location within 15 minute drive of our Airbnb. My friend and I stopped by this past Saturday morning to grab coffee for ourselves and our other friends. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but dang, Mudhouse is expensive. It shocked me to see DC pricing, if not more pricy. I was feeling a pour-over this morning, so I asked the baristas what they recommended since I was looking for their wildest offering. If I remembered correctly, they suggested one of their current single origins, Costa Rica - Finca Las Torres Honey Process (tasting notes: candied plum, red apple, honeycomb). The pour-over was $8, which is crazy. I should have just bought a bag of beans (which is 3x more expensive), and I would have been able to make 20 cups for myself. The pour-over was good though, bright and fruity, and I enjoyed drinking it even without a pastry. I picked up a different pour-over (also a single origin and was $8) and matcha ($7.75 for a small) for a couple friends. They both enjoyed their drinks (the matcha was very green and tasted legitimate) but thought it was more expensive than it should be. Overall, still a solid coffee roaster in the area with a homey and spacious interior -- just a bit too expensive for coffee and tea. read more

Stopped in for an afternoon coffee between wineries. They location was adorable. Service was quick and friendly. They had a nice selection of both iced and hot coffee, espresso drinks, teas, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries. I got a pumpkin spice latte and it was delicious. I want to like Mudhouse. I really do. And there's a few things to like, to be sure. So, yeah, let's focus on the positives for a moment. Their croissants, are, without doubt, perfectly executed. Every layer of the mille fleur pastry is present and accounted for. Pistachio is my fave, and you can't go wrong with the classic plain. Their coffee is good, tho I do wish they'd sport a dark roast as well as their house blend. The space itself is lovely and well appointed. Little nooks abound to find a seat and poach some wifi if you're in the mood to stay a while. When the weather is fair there's also ample dog-friendly outdoor seating. But then... Service. Ummm. Ok. "Service" is a strong word. Don't get me wrong, I've had a positive customer service experience at Mud House. But sadly it was the exception and not the rule. My last three visits have left me scratching my head at how the same place can feel welcoming on one day and hostile the next. Orders are taken and apparently instantly forgotten, because twice I've paid for a croissant (remember those fabulous layers?!) and had to ask the counter person repeatedly for my pastry (today I was treated to a pretty snarky response and lack of eye contact combo that was black belt level). But look, I'm nothing special. Just a guy spending $10 for a travel mug (16 oz) of coffee and a pastry. There's also some problematic aspects on the food front. Take their egg and cheese breakfast sammy, for example. I think they call it the Megg Ryan. I mean, egg and cheese on an everything bagel *sounds* good until they put said sandwich in a microwave to heat it. What happens to bread in a microwave you ask? Why, it turns gummy and disgusting! So instead of having a nice toasty egg and cheese bagel with contrasting textures and hints of garlic and onion, poppy seeds and rye, you get lava hot cheese, mircrowaved eggs (pro tip: don't microwave eggs) and gummy bread. The resulting mouthfeel is a monotony of squish. I got two bites in and my loving dog got the balance. Good girl. And finally, I think the prices at Mudhouse are a mite high for what you're getting. As I said: a 16oz travel cup and croissant cost me $10. I mean, was I taxed because I have a competing roaster's decal on my Yeti? Price feels more like Tesla Crozet than pickup truck Crozet. That's all imma say. So, yeah. Go here for a decent cuppa and a bangin pastry. Maybe avoid anything bagel until they spring for a toaster/salamander/panino press. And don't be all uppity and expect friendly service. read more

This place is amazing. I've gone since I was little and it still hasn't disappointed. There's a pretty good ambience. Some part of the ceiling is falling apart, but I don't really mind cause it's so great overall. There is a nice chess table as well as higher and lower chairs. There's also a good couch. The store is always pretty densely packed so it's not great sometimes but overall it's pretty nice. The food is good. Coffee is okay and their pastries are pretty well-made. It always goes pretty fast about Starbucks speed. It's in a very convenient location pretty much in the town center. read more

Overpriced! I have gone a few times now, and I am always amazed at their pricing. Today I asked for a medium ice latte with half the caffeine and was told that I would have to pay $2 extra on top of an already $8ish coffee! That's wild. Came here to meet up with our florist to discuss some ideas, and she suggested meeting here. There is parking in front of the shop, along the little road area and near the back. The service was nice and quick. I did think it was a little pricey. My fiance got a cold brew while I got a peach iced tea. It was fine. I liked that they put them in mason jars if you drink it there. Overall it was a fine place, I wouldn't go out of my way to get coffee/drinks here. read more

I stopped by today on a trip to Crozet today for a drink and a snack! I was pleased to see such a cute, quaint, brick building in the pictures I found on Yelp, so I knew I wanted to stop by! Upon entering there is a sign asking for those who are non-vaccinated to keep their masks on and those who are were ok to enter without if they prefer. There were large, brightly lit, cases holding tons of goodies and sweets! I noticed some pretty interesting snacks, desserts, and even sandwiches! They all looked SO yummy, and I decided to go with the mini Strawberry Banana Loaf. The loaf was the perfect size, super moist, and I could taste bites of the real fruit inside. Delicious! To drink I ordered a dirty chai on ice with oat milk which always also delicious and had a great chai flavor! In addition to the crafted beverage, I purchased a Pear Kombucha from a very local place called Blue Ridge Bucha. Everything was super delicious, the employees were amazingly awesome and efficient, and there is PLENTY of ample room to hang out, or meet up! And even bigger perk is after you enjoy your snack and/or beverage you can walk right across the street and take a picture with awesome artwork! read more

Really great iced mocha with oat milk! Our cashier and barista were friendly. The restrooms are clean. This is a nice spacious place to chill out with a tasty beverage. I noticed they also serve alcohol, but we were just passing by as a pit stop on our way through town, so we did not indulge. The bakery case was full of yummy looking treats. The cozy atmosphere, with its soon-to-be completed overstuffed armchairs, makes it a perfect spot to relax. Their pastries, especially the crumb cake, are a must-try. While comparable in price to chain coffee shops, the quality, service and ambiance make it worth breaking from them both in Crozet and downtown Cville. Outdoor seating is available, making it pet-friendly too. It's also a walkable neighborhood being in the downtown area -- so you can try other local shops and restaurants. If you were looking for a coffee joint in Crozet, this is your place. They have some of the best almond milk lattes I have tasted to date. Their staff is friendly and cordial. Their prices are fair and pretty much comparable to Starbucks. Parking is a little tight when you share it with several other stores next to you, but I have yet to wait for a spot to open. The place is also generally quiet with half of the coffee shop being for studying or general relaxing with multiple couches and sofa chairs. I absolutely recommend Mudhouse Coffee. read more

Best staff!! I was there today during what seemed like a rush. I didn't know what I wanted but the barista, I think her name was Annie(?), was so helpful and fun! I had to leave a review because I saw another person ordering and they were so rude and giving the staff a hard time. The same barista who worked with me was so patient and was trying to help the person who was ordering and I was amazed at how calm, cool and collected she was. 100%, 5 stars today. Really impressed at the staff's kind, and friendly attitude even in the face of some really rude customers today! As we were traveling through Virginia, my husband and I decided to stop by and grab some coffee. I was looking forward to a vanilla latte, since their vanilla is house made, so I ordered a 16 oz, and passed the barista my travel cup. My cup fits 20 oz, so I told her if it would mess up proportions, then she could put it in a paper cup. She said it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, my latte was milky and there was no vanilla in it whatsoever. my 20 oz cup was filled to the top, so the proportion wasn't really considered. I get that it's easy to forget. I'm a barista as well, but I left feeling like I purchased a cup of milk and I was in too much of a hurry to ask for it to be remade. I've found that most places make drinks wrong if you give them your personal cup. I do it to help save a cup and also to benefit the business, but it stinks when you end up getting a cup of milk vs the drink expected and the drink you paid for. I used to love Mudhouse. But today I had one of the worst coffee experiences ever. The two baristas were obviously busy, but neither acknowledged me or the other customers waiting at the counter. They completely ignored us until the guy finally came to take my order. I thought, okay, they're too busy to say anything. Maybe they're tired of dealing with the public. Maybe they're both having a bad day, whatever. When I was done placing my order the guy didn't say anything to me. No "thanks", no "all set", no "you can wait over there." Nothing. I don't need much interaction, but a little human recognition, a tip of the head, or some kind of acknowledgment would be nice. So I just walked away thinking, okay, I guess we're done now. I ordered 2 mint mochas, a small no foam with extra chocolate, and a standard mint mocha. The small came back with foam. The guy seemed annoyed that I asked him to remove it, but he did, more or less. I could barely taste the mint in the small, and couldn't taste any in the large, so I asked the petite purple-haired barista in the black mask if she could add more to both. She looked slightly angry and more annoyed than the guy, but she did it. When I tasted them again I couldn't figure out what I was tasting. It wasn't mint. Whatever it was wasn't at all appealing. But there was a crowd, the two baristas were obviously unhappy and fairly unfriendly, and I didn't feel like making an issue of it. (What I really wanted was a refund because both of the drinks were awful. And I'm not that picky.) Look, I know sometimes an experience can be hit-or-miss, and I take those miss days in stride. I'm not a complainer. But those were the worst espresso drinks I think I've ever had. And when you pay a lot for something (coffee shop coffee is a rare treat for me these days), at the very least you want to be satisfied with your experience, if not pleased. In the end, we dumped our drinks (even the caffeine to start our day and the expensive purchase wasn't enough to make us ignore the weird flavor!) and headed to Charlottesville for a replacement, anywhere but Mudhouse. In the early days Mudhouse was staffed by relatively fun and lively people. Now they often seem annoyed that you're interrupting their day by being there and asking them to do things for you. It's really unfortunate. Mudhouse used to be my favorite local coffee shop since they opened in the '90s. Now I question whether I ever want to go back. If you've ever been deeply disappointed by your Mudhouse mocha experience, maybe check out MarieBette Cafe in Charlottesville. Their mochas aren't sweetened, but that means you can adjust the sweetness to your preference (which is great if you love more chocolate, but not a ton of sugar.) Their chocolate also has a lovely nutty (natural hazelnut?) flavor that is amazing. High-quality stuff that I strongly recommend. read more

I'm such a huge fan of the coffee here, and I honestly think this is their best location. I love the high ceilings, comfy chairs, and ample space. It's wonderful for meeting friends or studying. As far as the coffee goes, I also think it's the best in town. They have a wide variety of roasts, ranging from single origin fruity roasts to some darker, more chocolate-y blends. I tend to opt for a pour-over. Even though these are pretty expensive, it's a great way to try a particular bean before committing to a full bag of it. Their espresso is also consistently good, and I like how they give you an 8oz option. The outside seating is fine, but can get really noisy. I would recommend sitting inside. Finally, the cocoa date balls are amazing and a really great small snack to grab if you're not wanting a large pastry. While I'm not evaluating this place based on service, I do think some of the employees are fairly rude and just not attentive. I am not sure what's going on here because the overall vibe is so great. But I guess it depends on who is working. read more

My husband and I recently traveled to Crozet for an anniversary getaway, and per the more popular Yelp reviews I could see that Mudhouse would be a nice place to stop on our way home for coffee and pastries. There was a large selection of coffee from around the world, and I opted for a South Africa blend, which was tasty but not over the moon. My husband, the tea fanatic, had better luck. He spent a good amount on loose blended teas on the menu. It's cute here, and I would recommend stopping for coffee at Mudhouse to further support small business but to be honest, I wasn't wowed and it wasn't cheap. read more

A few years ago, I'd have given Mudhouse five stars. What's still positive: the coffee is good and the work space is phenomenal. What's not: the business has just become so full of itself. I've dropped in multiple times during the evening hours (7 pm) and they've had no decaf coffee brewed. I mean, when else might one want decaf, if not in the evening? The solution? To offer a pour over at double price. Um, no thanks. Strike one. A few months later I was told they discontinued their refill policy because it, "devalues our product." Right...Strike two. Third, they unapologetically dropped their bonus star system, taking no care to offer any compensation for all those stars I'd been accumulating towards a reward. Strike three! Great place to get some work done! I've been coming here for while. People who work here really love what they do and know their coffee! They are also super friendly, so to those of you who are new to coffee and want to learn more, feel free to ask them questions. This place is also relatively quiet which makes it the perfect place to study or respond to some emails. I live in Charlottesville and takes me about 20min to get here. But it's totally worth it! They also have some pretty filling food item which is great since I often starve in coffee shops! A local coffeeshop, my husband and I stopped by after a blah-ish dinner. The staff were super friendly, and I loved the high ceilings. There were comfy arm chairs and a wall bench with tables where people were working/studying. I ordered a small cup of local apple cider (from Morris Orchard in Amherst, VA) - the cider is pressed weekly and has no preservatives. It was hot and delicious, and had a wonderful aroma of the spices. I also had their Pumpkin Square and a Curried Beef Turnover - the curried beef was actually pretty decent, and the ground beef was well-seasoned; the pumpkin square was decadent, moist, great 'Fall-like' spices with a nice topping of cream cheese frosting.
