I've been going up to Staunton often recently for family matters, and I've loved taking time to check out all the local businesses when I'm able to. Reunion has been a breath of fresh air - really good espresso drinks, pastries, and breads. To be 100% honest, Crucible's coffee is better, but their pastry selection is minuscule and they can feel a bit stuffy. Reunion's pastries are good, though I wish they had more French-inspired things like pain au chocolat, croissants, or even soft cinnamon rolls, but I feel they excel more at the breads side of baking. I got a mini sourdough loaf once and it was excellent! Service is always friendly and happy, and the shop itself is cute, but there isn't much space inside. I'm all for tables outside, but there's not much real estate there either, especially on a busy morning. I think a small adjustment to flow could make it easily sit a couple cafe tables inside without it feeling so crowded. I just miss the days of being able to hang out and have good coffee and snacks while doing some work on a laptop. Seems like most businesses would rather have you out the door instead. I have high standards for bakeries and cafes, and Reunion meets most of them. They're now my favorite place to go in the mornings in Staunton... if they're open. I would go there much more often if I could actually eat my breakfast there instead of having to get back in my car or sit in the blistering summer heat. read more

I stopped by just to pick up a chocolate croissant and a bag of granola for my 5 hour train ride back home. The granola is solid and the chocolate croissant very good. I thought about ordering the quiche to go for lunch on the train but it was way too big for one person and would likely be a bit messy. I'd like to go back and try their other pastries and breads next time I'm in Staunton! and their coffee, I was in a rush to make my train so didn't get coffee. read more

This was a nice find! We wanted some coffee and my husband found this spot. It's a small place, but they had some outdoor seating. All of the breads and pastries looked and smelled amazing! I had the carrot cake muffin which was really good. You could tell it was homemade. I also got their cold brew coffee, which was also good! It was smooth and had no bitter aftertaste. Don't be intimidated by the line out the door, they work quickly. The interior is positively adorable. They have a few cafe tables outside on the sidewalk. I never like apple pastries but theirs was perfect- flaky pastry, perfect texture and flavor to the custard, the apples just melt in your mouth. read more

We ordered an Apple pastry, lemon almond cake, and a sausage croissant. The Apple pastry was rock hard around all the edges. It was difficult to eat because it was extremely hard. It lacked any flavor. The almond lemon cake was extremely wet and heavy with little flavor. I threw it away after several bites. The croissant was good but I did not detect the cheese and the filling was extremely skimpy. It seemed most of this was pre-baked or the day before or from a freezer? Fresh goods early in the morning are not hard. There was a line out the door and it seemed to be popular. When ordering (everything is expensive) you are prompted for a 20-25 percent tip. I think that's uncalled for considering you order and you wait at the counter for your bakery items. A 10 percent tip is generous and fair to all parties. I wasn't impressed but the crowd waiting says otherwise! read more

On a quick visit to Staunton, pronounced STANton, and had a really perfectly flaky and buttery croissant and a pain au chocolat that was fresh and so decadent. Cappuccino or Cafe Créme with Croissants are my favorites when I'm having a busy day. These did not let me down as they were perfect. The staff was friendly and patient with those unfamiliar with the store and the scent of fresh baked goods. I was there a little early to get a Cannelé, but I'll have to return tomorrow for one. Overall this is a great place to get your baked goods. Something to consider is that this place is quite small inside. When they're busy it's almost shoulder to shoulder inside. When my family and I went there was already about 10 other people inside and it was cramped. Unfortunately, I didn't get anything to drink while we there because of it being so busy. I really did want to try their espresso. I'll make sure to grab one of their drinks the next time I visit. I did however try some of their food items. My mother and I both ordered a cinnamon and honey scone. My wife ordered a slice of their ham, egg and cheese quiche. We also ordered a baby loaf of sourdough bread to take home. I can tell you that I enjoyed every item we ordered. The scones were amazing. Melted in your mouth delicious. It's a shame I didn't get any coffee because the scones would pair perfectly with it. My wife really enjoyed their quiche as well. It looked really good. Something to consider when ordering the quiche; if you order it hot it takes 15 minutes for them to heat it up. The bread is also great. Some of the best I've had. This place is great. Friendly service, good food. They even have some outside seating for you to enjoy. Plus, it's located at the bottom of downtown Staunton so you're not having to walk up hills to enjoy it. Like I put earlier it is small inside. Maybe try planning a visit when it's not as busy. Whenever that may be. We went early Saturday morning, and it was pretty busy. So keep that in mind. I would absolutely recommend this place, though. read more

Updating my former review as seems things have gone downhill here... Coffee isn't quite as good and they don't pay as much attention to detail. This bakery still has a rotating menu of pastries each week that they update on their site and feature local and in-season flavors. All that is wonderful... Last month, I stopped in for a quick breakfast and some goodies to go on the road for the drive home, the gal behind the counter was nice - I ordered two financiers, my mom loves them, an almond biscotti, a caramel macchiato and a slice of quiche. I waited about 15 minutes for my quiche to be heated and when I got it and walked up the street to meet up with my husband and parents who were dining somewhere else, it was cold! It wasn't even warmed all the way through. I was so disappointed. I could've taken it straight from the counter. I literally sat for 15 minutes waiting for nothing - it was barely warm on the outside, cold on the inside and the crust wasn't even warm or crispy. Ugh. The coffee - which is always the best in town - was lacking and didn't even taste like what I ordered, mostly foam, no caramel. Big disappointment. I was told that they sold from the original owners, don't know if that is true or not, but super disappointed in this place I always look forward to visiting when in town to see my mom. read more

Took a day trip to Staunton, and found this bakery by chance, as it was next to our parking garage. It seems to be the place to be, since the line was out the door. Everything we ordered was amazing, and fairly priced. We ordered coffee, a chocolate, croissant, two cruffins and a mini sourdough bread to take home. The store itself is pick up. Only, it appears that it used to be sit down, but I don't believe it needs that to be successful. I showed up with my dog and asked if she could come in with me to order. She couldn't, but one of the kind folks behind the counter offered to sit with my pup outside while I ordered my grub. Loved this place. The coffee was great and the baked goods were impressive. Strong, bold Americano. The chocolate chip cookie was good. Loved the almond biscotti! One of my favorites that I've had. Husband ordered the cannele. I've never had one before so don't have anything to compare it to. But it tasted like it was made with great baking techniques. I really enjoyed it. Service was very friendly. It's a small space. No indoor seating. There's a bench along the front window, but more for sitting while waiting for your order. It has a few tables outside along the storefront. I was looking for a good coffee shop in town, but was pleasantly surprised to do a quality bakery as well. This is a SOLID bakery in the heart of Staunton. We spent the night on our way back from NY to NC and stopped by in the morning to grab some goodies. We got a cruffin (filled with fluffy lemon curd and topped with honey meringue and a honeycomb piece.) It was insanely delicious. We also got a couple slices of quiche, with perfect custardy texture, regular croissants, almond croissants, financiers, blueberry galettes, a sourdough country loaf, and a couple baguettes. I froze the baguettes but already had a slice of the sourdough country loaf. It was one of the best loaves of bread I've ever had. They really know what they are doing. Their laminated pastries are impeccable. I really wanted to get cannelés but they are only available after 10:00 am. I had yelped for a little cafe for me and my partner as well as a friend to sit. We chose this place and after we all wished we chose elsewhere. It is small which is no big deal. We went in and I got a ham and cheese croissant as well as everyone else. It was stale and cold. After we got it we noticed there was a toaster that was never mentioned, the cashier never asked if we wanted them heated up or not. It was okay but I had to take it home (an hour away) and heat it up. Update: The owner very graciously offered a refund this experience was over a month ago and on a Sunday so I understand if things are not super fresh. I applaud their reaction for that it goes up a star :) I would just recommend that their employees offer to heat things up. read more

This French-inspired bakery that serves espresso/tea/other drinks is located in DT Staunton and y'all need to get when they first open in the mornings because they can sell out of their pastries QUICK! They just have a walk-up window for now, but anything that you see in the window of all their housebaked items, get one of each. TRUST! Just thinking about their items make me drool! I loved their Sausage Croissant, their Cannele, the Financier (Honey, Hazelnut & Blueberry), their Chocolate Almond Croissant, the seasonal galette (apple with candied lemon and walnuts), their Pear Croissant Bostock (with pistachio cream, pistachio candy, and apricot jam), their Blood Orange Danish (with pastry cream, marmalade, and poppy seed), and the S'mores Cruffin (with chocolate pastry cream, marshmallow fluff, and sourdough graham cracker). Each of these items were fresh, flaky, and tasty, but not overly sweet! My favorite was definitely the sausage croissant though, as it was so savory and so addicting! Note that their menu rotates often, due to the season, so make sure you check out their social media, as they post their menu up on Tuesdays. This place was delicious! After spending the night in Staunton, we were hungry and I needed caffeine. We walked about a mile to this place and ordered coffee and hot chocolate, as well as pastries. I got the veggie quiche and a plain coffee (I'm boring, I know) and neither disappointed. I asked for the quiche to be warmed up which took about 15 minutes or so, but worth it because cold quiche is disgusting IMO. The quiche had a flaky crust, and a rich, soft filing. Checked this place out as we where heading for Tennessee and was glad it was a little along the way. We arrived an hour after opening time and even as early as that, there was already a small line outside. They didnt offer indoor seating yet but they do have a few tables outdoors if you just want to enjoy their food and drinks right on the spot. We got some nicely made coffee. The latte was delicious and they were able to accommodate my vanilla lavender request. Aside from coffee, they make very good pastries! We brought croissants, canneles, financier and croffins! Every single one was great so I definitely get why people stop by here and order boxes of them. The location is perfect to at their historic downtown so not only get good food you also get so see some nice views. Wonder when I'll be able to stop by again! read more

Update: I brought my twin here (she's from Oregon) and had her try your quiche and focaccia bread. She's like me and didn't like focaccia bread since it's always dry and boring. NOT HERE! Reunion seriously has the most amazing focaccia bread in the world! We've tried the butternut squash, the olive, and the broccoli cheddar and every time, it's moist and delicious. It's so good that my hubby makes me get loaves to drag back to NOVA (and he's gluten free!) where we freeze the loaves and then toast them up to eat with soups! Update on the quiches - BEST. QUICHE. EVER. Creamy, soft center and perfect flaky crust. The bacon is wonderful and so is the butternut squash with goat cheese. Over 90% five star reviews for a reason! Baked items were amazing. The quiche is the best I've ever had. The texture was a perfect custard with bacon and cheese. The crust is buttery and flaky. A rich and delicate taste, it hits all the right notes for what quiche should be. We also had a ham and cheese croissant which was also done just right. They warm up baked servings in the oven to preserve the texture and flavor. Something I really appreciated. So be ready and willing to wait a few minutes to get your food heated properly if you want it warmed up. In addition to the bakery, lots of locals also come for the coffee. Its is good and STRONG. Be careful if you are caffeine sensitive. No seating inside but they do provide a heater to gather around during cold days. The bakery is rarely open so if you find it open, you should definitely go in. The issue is that once you go in there's only like five or six items still available at late morning. The spread of baked goods visible through the glass was appealing, and I got a chocolate and an almond croissant, the latter of which seemed like their specialty. The chocolate one was a bit too much flake and not enough chocolate for me; I know croissants are supposed to be flaky, but sometimes it's hard to eat one without making a mess. The almond one delivered a rich flavor and the moist almond paste mostly (but not entirely) made the flaky crust a moot point. This is a great bakery/cafe, strong on breads and baked goods, strong on coffee and coffee beverages, with a limited selection of other foods such as quiches. The only problem is the word has gotten out and they stay incredibly busy from shortly after opening time. There is often a line to the door, and it stays that way till they sell out. If you really want something, my advice is place an order online the day before and they will hold it for you. Thursdays they have started doing a limited "pop-up menu" of some basic drinks and baked goods; their main days are still Fri-Sat-Sun. I tend to preorder two batards on Thursday and pick up on Friday. This is the week's bread for me. They really make excellent bread! Their baguettes, croissants, and themed snacky-sweet-treats are standouts. They make excellent coffee beverages too, although you should expect a short wait for those. There are mini tables for two outside along the sidewalk, but this isn't a come-in-sit-down place. read more
