She researched different manufacturers so I could see some design options when we came in for our appointment. Great service and unique lighting options. I have never bought anything from Gross Electric. They have a lot of beautiful lamps, but they are a bit expensive. I called ahead to ask if they could supply me with a couple of light bulb adapters. When I described exactly what I wanted (to fit an E14 base into an E17 socket, male bulb base into female adapter to go into the appliance socket) the lady who answered the phone seemed to suggest that I could get something like that there. But when I went there today, the man working behind the counter looked up the adapter configuration I was after, and told me that they didn't carry them. Not even for special order? OK, back home, to buy the one I saw on Amazon. I tried to shop local with this one, but the trip wasn't totally worthless, because I was able to do some Christmas shopping at nearby PTO Thrift Store and Re-Use Center. A floor lamp for over $1000? Well, it's a beautiful import from an expensive European country. Some of the wall fixtures, chandeliers, and lamps do fall in a more reasonable price range. Ok, I'll just come here for the long-life lightbulbs. read more

I recently had a lamp repaired at Gross Electric. After the reviews, I was unsure I should use them, but a neighbor of mine recommended them. I must say my experience was not at all like that of most reviewers. The were very friendly, attentive and the job was done within a week and I was happy with the results. I would definitely use them again. They also have a lot of nice stuff in the showroom, but I was not in the need of anything. read more

This business should be renamed "Gross Incompetence." They have a reputation for poor customer service which manifests itself in various ways--rude staff; delayed orders; etc. And the markup on their fixtures and lights is insane--far higher than is typical of other electrical suppliers. Stay away unless you have money to burn and enjoy being mistreated. read more

Not sure about Gross Electric. Needed a bulb for a florescent light we bought there years ago and they called to say it was in drove over and discovered it had broken in transit. I get that so I asked for the number of the bulb so I could try to find another. They gave me a number - it was wrong - discovered that after I bought one at Grainger. I worked with a nice sales person - Erin - to get a new light fixture. However when I went to pick it up I had to wait 20 minutes for them to get it in my car and again the 3 bulbs I needed were broken. I think I'm done with them. read more

I was at Gross Electric today and had to write a review to counter those I have been reading. Erin and Pam were both extremely helpful. I had bought the wrong fixture; they helped me figure out which was the correct one and credited what I paid for the wrong one against the balance for the new. The original mistake was mine. They were both courteous and helpful. Apparently, this is partly how they stay in business! read more

My family has been coming here for awhile now, and it's always a positive experience. The salepeople are friendly and you can tell they've been in the industry for years (or decades). They also don't mind spending the time it takes to make sure you are informed, which is nice. If there's one downside it's the price. But honestly, you pay for what you get I think. read more

It's really hard to understand how this place stays in business. I think they win the award for the worst / rudest customer service in Ann Arbor -- year after year! I had swore off ever going in there again because of it -- and decided to give them a try when we needed another new fixture in our home. I was wrong and nothing has changed at Gross (guess the name suit it!). Still rude and arrogant, and have the highest prices around. Geesh.... as a small business owner, this attitude is hard to figure out. Will never go there again. read more

We encountered the rudest sales person EVER. She began by saying unless we were doing a million dollar kitchen re-do we probably didn't want the most expensive under cabinet lights. Told us our electrician should have consulted them before installing the recessed lighting and after telling us all of the mistakes we had made thus far, said "I don't mean to insult you, but if you are not going to buy something my time with you is up." We have to give mixed review and it is primarily due to one sales person. Virtually everyone we deal with here is fantastic, with the exception of one who was ultimately fairly rude. First, the products. Great lighting selection and best display (and knowledge) of cabinet hardware that we have found. Some of the same brands and fixtures can be found elsewhere for a fair amount less. Having said that, we believe the service and ability to view the choices can often justify a higher price. They also carry unique items tough to find elsewhere and when we had a problem with a Minka ceiling fan we purchased (actually, problem with two), they handled it easily and quickly. Having said that, they knew the fan was prone to problems and did not share that info. at purchase. Over the years we have purchased a fair amount here and purchased most of what we needed for our current project here (price difference on a few things was just too significant to overlook). We ultimately decided to deal with Rochelle in hardware and the fabulous contractor's counter personnel because of the issues with the salesperson. So, definitely shop them. I went into Gross Electric looking for a new lighting fixture today. I've done business with these folks in the past. While I was looking what I assume was a manager was explaining pricing/discounts to a new employee. When she explained "Just upcharge them 25% so when you bring the price down they think they're getting a discount" I just left. read more

Interesting, when I first read these other reviews I wasn't sure I wanted to work with Gross. However, my builder recommended them, and I have had a great experience with their Ann Arbor store/staff. Worked with Paul for LED/can recommendations, then Pam for all our other fixtures. She has been great, very flexible, helpful and responsive. She has also helped us find fixtures to meet and stay within our lighting budget. I have since heard very positive comments about Gross from other people, including a local restaurant owner who worked with them and was very satisfied. So I'd say, visit their store first, and don't just rely on these reviews! read more

We wanted to keep our purchases and money local so we went to Gross Electric. It was a frustrating and underwhelming experience. The first sales person that we worked with was personable and informed. When we made our decisions and went back, we dealt with a new gentleman who took ages to do a simple order (45 minutes) and calculated it incorrectly twice - trying to overcharge us both times. He told us that they would call us when our order arrived in their store. I stopped in a several weeks later, spoke to him directly and he said that they were not in yet. When I called two weeks after that, the lady that answered the phone said that our order had been in for 4 weeks and asked why hadn't we picked it up. I asked if there was a record of them calling us like they said that they would and she said that it was OUR responsibility to check on our order. I'll be spending my hard earned cash elsewhere. read more

I wish I would have read these reviews before I wasted my time at this store. I gave this store 2 chances but I will not be back for a third. My first visit I walked around the entire place twice and it wasn't until I was walking towards the door did someone finally (and very reluctantly I might add) approach me asking me what I needed. I sensed she was not the least bit interested in helping me so I said no thanks and left. I tried again yesterday, walked in the door and the 5 sales reps that I saw standing around didn't even glance at me, I was the only one in the shop by the way. About 10 minutes later the guy who was cleaning the bathroom asked if I would like him to try to find someone to help me. The guy cleaning the bathroom!! We are doing a complete remodel on our home so I am not just looking for a door knob or a light bulb, we have a significant amount of fixtures we are updating. I have taken my business elsewhere and will never consider nor recommend Gross Electric to anyone. read more
