The class is half rolling out muscles/half restorative yoga. It is the perfect class for sore muscles or a racing mind. Mikka is so kind and welcome, as is the whole Heart of Wisdom team. The Heart of Wisdom studio is in a multi-use space in Wedgewood-Houston but they have carved out their own little oasis in the building. They were recently able to move the studio into a larger space which has been very nice. I appreciate that the studio has all the mats and props needed for every class which makes coming too and from class a lot easier. They also offer free parking which is a big win in Nashvlle! They could not make it easier to do your yoga practice with them. I highly recommend incorporating visits to Heart of Wisdom into your practice!

I was visiting from out of town but wanted to get a weekly yoga session in. I found Heart of Wisdom on Google as it was a short drive from my hotel. I took Jenna's Slow Flow class on a Monday morning and it was great! The studio is clean and bright. The class was on the smaller side which was nice. All props were available to use and use of a yoga mat was free. The class was affordable at $23 (which actually gets you two classes, but since I traveled back home, I won't be able to use the second one sadly). When you arrive at 1216 4th Ave N, the studio is located in the courtyard to the right. I highly recommend taking a class at this quaint and welcoming studio. My only suggestion would be to hold off on burning sage (or other materials) in the studio for classes. I'm extremely sensitive to smells and because the instructor burned sage before and after the class, I developed a headache from the scent. Others may also prefer a scent free environment. Otherwise, the experience was invigorating and comfortable.

Cody taught both classes I took, and I swear this man was born in a squat. Dude held chair pose long enough to file taxes and plan a small revolution. I don't know if he's enlightened or just stubborn, but I respect it deeply. Class was wild. My legs were vibrating like an iPhone on silent. Every time I thought we were done, Cody was like, "One more plank," and now I live in plank. My arms wrote this review without me, and filled for divorce. The room could be hotter. I want to be sweating like I'm being interrogated by the CIA. I want to see visions of my ancestors handing me a towel. I want to crawl out drenched, whispering "water" like it's a lost language. Studio's clean, everyone's nice, and apparently it's nonprofit, which in this economy feels like a spiritual awakening on its own. Will absolutely be back to legally suffer in the name of wellness.

That said, Iyengar yoga is a very different style of yoga and may not appeal to those who like more active styles or flow routines. At 12 South, you hold poses for longer and focus on form rather than speeding through a series. This is great for people who either already have or are prone to injury, since props can be used to achieve the full pose. But don't be fooled by the slower pace; this is definitely a workout. The lower level classes do not emphasize the breathing or chanting that is often associated with yoga, so if that is something that you dislike, this is the place to try. Instructors are attentive, classes are generally small and the facility is terrific -- very clean, with quality props, easy parking and a small selection of yoga apparel and accessories for purchase. I need to sign up for another session. :)

Both locations offer superb instruction, a truly supportive and nurturing atmosphere that allows for fully experiencing the intensity and relaxation of Iyengar yoga. I have attended class by several instructors, and every one offers me new insights into poses, new techniques to maximize the effectiveness, and useful guidance to ensure I am doing poses properly. And that is the key difference here- proper position and technique. Poses are carefully and repeatedly taken, in order to really learn each one, rather than flowing through them sloppily. You will really "feel it" after these classes, as intensely as a more aerobic work out. The quads, glutes and hips are really involved in every pose, and I leave feeling both relaxed and stronger. Even the beginner courses get you involved in shoulder stands and inverted poses, and the use of equipment was mind-blowing for me. Again, it is all about proper form, and the brilliant use of props really allows you to set your body into poses that you would never have thought possible. The rooms are large, well appointed and clean. All equipment was in good repair and clean as well. I highly recommend 12 South Yoga.
