The Grove Arcade itself is beautiful. It has stunning architecture and is considered Asheville's first mall. However, aside from the beauty of it, it just was not for me. There are a lot of local shops but very specific and if you are just shopping around and visiting, I did not see anything special and the seating is nice but aside from one of the business that is on the outside, there really is no reason for me to return to the Grove and walk inside it. It is a cute mall in the historic building. The main thing of this mall is having a beautiful architecture feature with wonderful detail. Arch door way, spiral staircase, iron handrails, revolving door, bridge hallway, deco ceiling, and more. This building was originally plans for 14 story tower with 5 story for shop. But the builder died and only the base was build. It open the door 1929. My mom and dad was not born yet at that time. The building originally has a lot shops and offices but during the World War II, they evicted all shops and offices. Until 1980, it return to original use with office and shop. Blame on government for discontinuing the shop that cannot return to it former glory. The shop here are mostly specialty gift shop. It is unique in a way. It has a pet store, home goods, decorations store, furniture and restaurant. I like the skylight on top allows the natural light to get into the building. read more

A truly unique feature of central Asheville. It's been said there is not a single piece of level ground in the city of Asheville. This is most evident when you enter from the Battery Park end. You'll be walking down hill inside until you exit on Battle Square end. At the upper end it's two levels and on the lower end it's three. If you find yourself there on a sunny day, enjoy the beautiful atrium above and the cozy and warm sunshine coming through. My favorite shop is the Enter The Earth mineral & fossil store where they have an extensive section of treasures from mother earth. read more

Stunning historical building in central downtown Asheville with all sorts of interesting and unique boutique shops - high-end chocolate, pet toys, jewelry, art, restaurants. All very neat but nothing that I really wanted. Without a doubt, worth a stop and a wander. Signs detail the history of the building, which was opened in 1929 and then taken over by the Federal government as part of the effort to win World War 2. This is a nice combination of architecture, shopping and restaurants. We always try to stop in when we're in Asheville, even though on our latest trip we didn't necessarily buy anything. There are lots of nice art deco touches and some interesting shops. Our favorite features Arts & Crafts style home furnishings, even though we didn't need anything at the moment. You can access many of the restaurants outside, and the do have public bathrooms you can use (always nice after a long day of walking around downtown). read more

Lots of REALLY cool shops. Somewhat strange hours, but the weirdest thing is they close their bathrooms before the shops actually close. I was shopping in Enter the Earth and had to use the bathroom quickly. So, I made my purchase and went to go find the bathrooms. Strangely, shops don't close until 8pm, but they lock the bathrooms at 6pm. Others were confused as well. I had to go find a bathroom then and never made it back in to go to the body, bath and essential oil shop. Weird situation. All I can gather is that they don't want homeless in there??? I'm not really sure how that does the job if someone has to come in and lock up later on anyhow. read more

Wonderful architecture, small locally owned shops inside and a clean and safe environment. Highly encourage a walk up the stairs to see the view from the 2 level. It is amazing the quality and attention to detail that went into older construction and that this has been preserved so well. It is worth a trip to see at least once even if you are not a shopper. read more

It was so nice to escape the heat with my dog and stroll through this historic building. It offered a short cut to my car from the opposite side. Nice to browse the shops through the windows. My favorite was the book store. Dogs are welcome! Just not on the couches. read more

Where the heck am I? I feel like I am home in Brooklyn. Tattooed hipsters, artsy characters, scary hairy bikers... Cute little shops and fancy food places. Love. It. (Yea, I fit right in!) But enough of the scene - Groove Arcade is worth seeing not only for selection of shops but for it's amazing architecture. Built in 1926-1929 (mind blown!) it was restored in 2002 and it shines like an architectural jewel in downtown Asheville. Copies of original architects's drawing set in arches are very cool to browse thru. Great shopping, from watches and clocks to souvenirs and jewelry. Good places to eat as well. read more

This is a sweet little shopping venue with public restrooms. The shops are a little on the higher end side, wonderful to browse through if you want to get inside while in downtown Asheville. Some of my favorites include Wake Foot Sanctuary, Serenity + Scott, and Enter the Earth (crystal shop). The ceilings are high, the floor tiling is nice, and people walk through with their dogs! A unique historic building in the heart of downtown Asheville. The Grove Arcade is a beautiful building. It could even be described as haunting (also might be haunted?). The Grove Arcade has zero arcade games in it, but there's a pinball museum next door that it a must to check out if you like old arcade games or pinball. This place is kind of a mismatch of stores and eateries. That's not a bad thing, but there's really no theme to this building. The two places I love going to the most here are the Wake Foot Sanctuary and Serenity + Scott Wake Foot Sanctuary is a foot focused spa that also caters to a lot of other relaxation needs. This place is a must if you want to pamper yourself a bit. Soak your feet in some made to order hot water in a darkroom with some relaxing music (and forget the dumpster fire that's the world exists at all). If you like Men's skin and facial care boutiques then you must check out Serenity + Scott. As someone that likes facial products and beard products for men this place is wonderful. The staff and owners and incredibly polite and always eager to help you find a product that suits your needs. I've found wonderful beard washes here year after year. The rest of the Grove Arcade features a gem store that my wife really likes along with various restaurants, a candy store and other boutiques. It's a building with incredible architecture and the kind of place most people's parents will enjoy walking around for an hour or two. read more

Grove Arcade is a deceiving name because it's not an "Arcade" at all- it's a mall- a unique mall with lots of local shops and restaurants. The building is a historic landmark and is pretty cool. They have a Farmers Market inside on certain days. Some of my favorite shops were operated by local jewelry makers. The prices were pretty steep though. I would say it compares to buying an art piece at St. James Art Fair. There were quite a few places to grab a glass of wine, coffee or snack. The absolute best part is the "book store" at the front entrance that is actually a wine and champagne bar. I could stay there all day! read more

I enjoyed my time here ... little shops here and there, but i didnt find the stores that appealing... a bit pricey too. BUT it was a fun little stop over anyway. We walked here from the hustle and bustle of the downtown/square area and it was a nice little retreat from the cold. I suggest to check it out, but dont go way out of the way for it. read more

It's a small indoor shopping are located in Asheville. This isn't any place large or spectacular however there are some cute shops inside if you are looking for some local Asheville items (one shop had a lot of homemade items including some salsas and jellies, stuff like that). Also a furniture store that had some unique items. There is a parking garage and metered parking nearby. read more

What happens when you enter a building filled with items that you cannot afford? You grunt when your husband tells you that a lamp costs six hundred bucks, you imagine what it must feel like to be secure, and then you just leave. We entered some kind of art store. All the art was mass produced and not local. We had somehow entered the most boring shop in the whole building. The lack of patrons everywhere- nowhere- depressed me. It was quiet. Too quiet. On the way out, we got some action. My husband held the door for a woman with a dog, and I lingered behind so she could enter. As I moved a bit forward, my foot hit some sort of metal barrier on the ground, and I tipped onto the lobby window a bit. The glass gave just a hair, and dammit, it felt good. We laughed and left. We went back a minute later to cross the building's internal width to get to the other side, just like chickens. We met our woman-with-dog friend, and she announced that they had kicked her out. As we continued in and on, we saw an unleashed, immaculate dog with a bow just milling about. Beautiful but boring. read more

Geez! Grove Arcade has a lot going on!! Incredible historical architecture is only the beginning!! This place was built by the creator of The Grove Park Inn as a public market back in the twenties! Renovated and recently reopened in 2002. This place is massive and contains tons of boutiques, restaurants and galleries! If you have enough money, I think they even have apartments!!! In true Asheville fashion, the Grove Arcade is a 1920's era building that offers a limited assortment of eclectic shops, galleries, and arts & crafts stands. Of note, aside from the period architecture, was the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar. There was also the Four Corners Home shop (an "organic modern" furniture and home wares shop), Appalachian Strings (musical instruments), Tic-n-Time (fine clocks), and Fresh Quarter Produce (market). While we explored, we were entertained by a very talented busker who performed acoustic classic rock and folk songs (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, etc.). He had a good folksy voice and acoustic guitar sound. While the Grove Arcade is limited to the point where it precludes it from being a destination unto itself, it is certainly worth peeking in to see if you're already exploring the downtown area on foot. read more

What a beautiful building! Really, it's worth seeing for the architecture. If you're planning to go for shopping, eh, skip it. The Grove Arcade has a small handful of shops including a high end jewelry store, a gemstones and rocks store, a woodworking store and a small market. There are maybe 10 - 15 stores at best. We kept seeing signs for Grove Arcade all over Asheville and started following. In my mind I was hoping for a video game arcade, but deep down I knew this wouldn't be the case. Grove Arcade is actually a large building housing a bunch of different stores. The stores/shops here are pretty diverse, ranging from crafty boutiques to furniture to restaurants. Like other shops in Asheville the wares tended to be a bit on the pricey side, targeting the tourists flocking to the area. Still, the diversity of the place makes it an interesting point of time killing. I particularly enjoyed the clock store, since I have a love for Grandfather and coo coo clocks. On the Saturday we went there were also some local vendors set up outside with stalls of crafts and some foods. Not exactly a "must-see" but an interesting way to kill some spare time if you have it, or if you enjoy buying over-priced hippy-made crafts. read more

I'm here for springbreak and it was lightly snowing, Asheville was under a snow watch. But, I still managed to go view a lot of places before it started raining. I really love the art work that is down there and if I had the money to buy one peice I would. The stores are all very unique and each store caters to different budgets ( trust me, lol ) . Having said that, there really is not much to do here except meander through a few shops and galleries. So in my opinion you should stop by if you are already meandering around Downtown Asheville and you're looking for restrooms and/or AC,but if not, don't make a special trip to the Grove Arcade. read more

Really interesting 1920s era shopping space that was recovered from the clutches of the federal government about a decade ago. For that alone it is worth a stroll, but there are many interesting little shops and such tucked into the building. Just be mindful that some of the fare is more local than other stuff -- and for me the local stuff is what I'm most interested in. I'd include it on any hearty tromp thru downtown Asheville, but probably not a destination in itself. read more
