This area by the river sustained some of the heaviest flood damage and destruction. But Marquee has opened back up and from the inside you cannot even tell it was almost destroyed. But on the outside the driveway and parking lot and surrounding buildings are all a bot rough still. But give Marquee a chance and you will not be disappointed by the quality and variety of local art they have brought back into the midst of the destruction. Really impressive local art! read more

I would leave 0 stars if I could!!!!!!!! My family and I walked in to the Marquee probably around 4:20PM on a rainy day. The power was flickering but we were happy to be out of the rain. We perused the aisles, carefully examining items both antique and handmade. We enjoyed many of the items, but found many of them to be on the pricey side. This is understandable as many are handmade so I didn't think much of it. That is until I stumbled upon this cow skull marked $16. I was so excited as that is a nice fair price and it's been on my thrift list for a while. I walked up to the counter and the employees were checking folks out but there were two, so I asked the one that was not visibly busy, "Excuse me! Do you mind if I just leave this here?" Knowing she was busy, I was just expecting a quick response. But as I stood there I thought I heard her say "yep" without even looking up. I had to ask to confirm I heard her right. I thought it was a bit odd but again I totally understood that she was busy so really thought nothing of it. We perused for a bit longer until the owners announced the store was closing shortly and to come up if you'd like to make any purchases. I did, explaining how excited I was and how happy I was with the price. The two women behind the counter immediately took notice and one of them said, "that must be a mistake." Again, I thought this was a bit odd, but not a big deal. I stood and waited while the owner called one seller, then another, then another. They assured me that the price "HAD to be a mistake," and I continued to wait, hearing her audibly huffing and sighing while others were also waiting to pay until eventually I just said, "I'll happily pay $20 for it!!" But was quickly refused. At this point, I really felt like the employees were not only being curt/direct, but directly disrespectful. I was appalled when after standing there for what had to be another 5 minutes or so, I finally said, in effect, "I don't understand why if the price is marked you wouldn't be able to honor it. It is the skull of an animal, a waste product, after all. There are many ranchers that regularly discard them..." to which one of the women behind the counter genuinely said "Let me ask you something. If you were me, and you were selling these items, would you not want me to do my due diligence and check?" I responded that in all honesty, if I was a business owner and made a pricing mistake... (which again, was never actually confirmed by the seller or even implied, it was a completely baseless accusation from the front desk employees) ... a mistake that was pointed out by a customer, I would almost certainly honor that price. She seemed disgusted. It felt like the employees were accusing me of trying to steal or switch the tag or something, which would've been literally impossible as the tag was marked "cow skull." Finally at this point I walked out. On the way out the door, I was talking to my folks about how shocked I felt by what had just happened (they saw the whole thing and felt the same way) and a very kind employee named Alex noticed what I was saying and that I was almost crying and held the door open for us before taking us aside and apologizing on behalf of the store and asking us several times to please come back and see them. I said we would not, but that I really appreciated his kindness. That gesture from Alex is the only redeeming factor from my visit to the store, and both myself and my parents were absolutely shocked and appalled. If they wanted to confirm prices or even refuse to sell for that price, that would be totally understandable. But the implication of wrongdoing I felt along with just general disdain made me genuinely feel as though I had done something wrong just for trying to purchase an item. I really am dumbfounded. Regardless, thank you once again to Alex for being the saving grace of this trip. I have anxiety and your kindness genuinely helped me to not cry as I was leaving and help enjoy the rest of my day. That being said, if you value kindness and human decency and you don't have a several hundred dollar budget, don't ever go here. We were in the arts district for lunch so I figured we should check out a few galleries.My husband didn't seem to be a fan of this idea so I checked Yelp to find one gallery that would take up a bunch of our time. He agreed to go to one and after some research on Yelp I decided Marquee was the winner. There are so many different exhibits here I felt like I was going to an art festival in one building. There was a lot of cool stuff to look at from paintings to photography to hand blown glass to clothing. A few things caught my eye, but the only thing I ended up buying was a mug for a friend that reminded me of her. We spent about 45 minutes here and were well entertained. 01/01/2026 While my wife and I were in Asheville, we took a drive through the River Arts District to see how the area was doing after last year's flooding. After months of watching the news and seeing the devastation, it was surprising that, as we approached, you couldn't immediately tell how severe the damage had been. We parked and walked around, visiting several buildings that were open. The new concrete was noticeable, but once inside some of the studios, we saw photos from after the flood and couldn't believe how much damage had occurred -- or how well the buildings had been restored. The work done to bring everything back was truly impressive. We then drove across the railroad tracks toward the Marquee, where the damage was much more visible. Several building walls had collapsed, there was a car partially buried in the ground, and other clear signs of destruction remained. We spent over an hour walking through Marquee, visiting each individual gallery space and hoping to find something to purchase as a way to support the artists and the community. While walking through, we noticed that some items appeared to be mass-produced items -- cups and similar products -- being resold, which was disappointing. We also saw many pieces priced extremely high, including what appeared to be reprints rather than original works. Several other visitors we spoke with made similar observations, and we all felt that if prices were more reasonable, many more people would be purchasing items. For example, we saw glassware in two different sizes. The larger pieces were priced between $45-$55, which seemed high but potentially understandable. However, the smaller pieces were priced exactly the same. We checked multiple tags to be sure -- all were the same price regardless of size. We also saw an 8x10 photographic reprint (unframed) priced over $65, and several photographs printed on aluminum at prices that felt significantly marked up. We don't mind supporting artists or helping an area recover -- we truly wanted to -- but the pricing felt excessive. Many others we spoke with felt the same way. After grabbing a bite, we headed back towards the River Arts District, and decided to check out a placed called Marquee that several of the artists we met earlier in the morning had to told us about. This is basically a collective, with booths, walls, and spaces rented out to artists to show and sell their art. We were told it was big, but until we arrived, and saw the length of this building, we had no idea how big it was...it was huge! From the outside, this place looks like an aircraft hanger, and once you step through the doors, you're completely surrounded by art in every corner of the space, paintings, sculptures, clothing, just so much amazing art all under one roof. We wondered around this area for a good hour and half, exploring, and discovering so much amazing work by the creative community. And similar to other artist venues I've reviewed, pricing on the art varied, some high, some low, it hit so many different price points, but the value is all in the eye of the consumer...what I'm willing to pay a lot for, you may not, but that's just how art is. This is another must visit spot, especially if you don't have a lot of time to visit many galleries will in town, I'm sure this doesn't even scratch the surface of the artist community in the Asheville area, but it will certainly give a good representation. read more

The Marquee had a very elective collection of art to offer and also had wine & beer to enjoy while pursuing. The set up was a bit much... I get you want to get as much art as you can in the place, but to effectively see it all, you'd have to go in small circles around each area. If you go here, that explanation will make more sense. Marquee is a market that has a ton of different art galleries within that showcase the artwork of local artists that you can purchase, as well as other goods and products. We visited Marquee while walking around the River Arts District and saw this gigantic building with a ton of different artwork inside. I love supporting local businesses and artists, and this place does just that, with plenty of area artwork and products for purchase. The artwork varies in medium, from paintings, to ceramics, to textiles, etc. There's something for everyone here. Inside the Marquee is also an area where you can kick back and have a drink as they have a small bar area where they sell and/or offer local liquors. Marquee is part of the River Art District and the most impressive of what we were able to see so far. That's why Marquee deserves its own review. Marquee is like a big warehouse full of arts. When you first walk in, you'd see a robot guard and on the ceiling, there are decorated umbrellas hanging up side down. I like that the ceiling is tall and each kiosks have decent space so it made me feel comfortable and relaxed walking around. There are not a lot of artists in Marquee like other locations because this is more of a showroom than a place for the artists to work at. They're selling beverages and snacks if you want a small bite. The interesting part is they have a full bar with great decorations, designs and seatings. If you want to take your drinks to wander around and look at art at the same time, you can! Marquee owns the bar so you can walk everywhere inside marque with a drink on your hand. I own a furniture store of 30 years and stayed at an airbnb nearby. Asked her where she got her beautiful doors from and she recommended this place. We get there 4:00 on Sunday excited to see what they have the hostess points to my girlfriend in a rude condescending voice singling her out saying "There is a sign right here saying no bags!!" Everyone drops their jaws in shock and I asked what she said and she repeats "The sign right there says no bags" this is as several people are carrying back packs and large purses! By far the best art gallery I went to in Asheville. I HIGHLY recommend you come here!! They have a really cool bar inside with a lot or seating. Next to the bar there is a unique spot for a DJ to setup for special events. You can grab A drink and wonder the large space looking at all the great art.
