Upon entering, your child will have a play area to the right that is always streaming Disney movies. Further back are individual examination chairs and rooms. Bright colors and calm environment that is an immediate stress reducer for apprehensive children (and parents). Dr. Makrum has excellent bedside manner, speaks to the children in a relatable manner, while being very gentle and calm as she explains what she is going to do. Our daughter loves going to see her and always asks when her next appointment is. Recently, our daughter chipped her tooth while playing on the playground. It was a Saturday and the practice was closed but we left a message on the emergency line. Within minutes, Dr. Makrum was calling, asking what happened, having us text photos and then recommended a course of treatment at an emergency dentist. She stayed in contact until the tooth was repaired and then had us come in the following week to inspect the work. You won't find a better pediatric dentist!!

However, getting in and out during appointments is still a breeze. We've never waited more than 5 minutes past their appointment time and I've never waited over 30 minutes for the appointment to be over. We used to go to an extremely popular pediatric dentist in Palm Harbor where the waiting room would be packed, we waited at least an hour past our appointment time and you couldn't leave without a high pressured up sell. Not at pediatric dentistry of westchase...in and out, no pressure and great service. The office staff is extremely friendly, there are plenty of up to date periodicals to read in the waiting room and the facility is always clean. Highly recommended.

We were deeply disappointed in Dr. Maggie and her staff…read more As soon as we walked we were told that they do not accept insurance of any kind. The price was $279 for the visit but they will push you to sign up for their membership. Which is essentially a subscription program to lock in monthly revenue. All this fine it is a business. I don't fault a business for trying to be profitable but we were there specifically for a lip tie procedure for our daughter. We have a dentist that accepts our insurance but Maggie was recommended by our pediatrician because we were told she specializes in lip tie procedures. As soon as her staff realized that we were not going to be monthly reoccurring revenue but one time customers the $279 turned into over $600. It was one excuse after another. This is an emergency exam, plus a preliminary exam, plus the actual lip tie procedure..... Keep in mind the 2 exams that were over $450 took 5 minutes in a chair with no equipment other than Dr. Maggie's hands and a iphone to snap a couple pictures. I paid it out of pocket because I wanted to do what I thought was best for my daughter. We realized how incredibly deceptive this entire experience was the next day when we saw our dentist. He apparently knows Dr. Maggie because they went to dental school together. She flat out asked us where we were currently going and knew that our dentist accepted our insurance and performed lip tie procedures but purposely omitted that information while racking up the bill by 220% from the original price we were told by the front desk. When we told our Dr. how much we paid for the procedure he was furious. He said 30 minute exam plus lip tie procedure should not even come close to the price we paid. In our experience they didn't care about our financial situation or the well being of our family only how much money they could get from us in that one visit.

When I took him to a new dentist closer to our home, the lady spent only TWO minutes with him, then sent him back, claiming he wouldn't let her work and recommending a specialist so they could put him to sleep for treatment. We always extracted teeth, and my son was always worried and cried, but other doctors always tried to calm him down. In this clinic, the doctor did not even try to calm the child down. The new dentist(s) may be worthy of five stars also but I don't think it's fair that they "inherit" Dr. Ortiz's ratings. They should be required to start from scratch. I'll start by saying I don't tend to frequent anything other than privately owned and operated dental offices. Big corporations usually rotate dentists in and out so you can never develop a relationship with them. I knew Dr. Ortiz had sold his practice but was still working at Smile Design. However, They did not forewarn me prior to my last appointment approximately 6 months ago that Dr. Ortiz was no longer there and I'd be seeing someone new. The whole staff with the exception of 1 person is new. Consistency is what I absolutely LOVED about Center for Smiles. The staff never changed, they all knew you by name, and the atmosphere was like a family. The new staff couldn't even add up my total charge correctly. The receipt showed $86 but she charged my FSA card $88 & it took weeks to resolve getting that $2 put back (because you know an FSA don't play...they need to verify down to the last penny!) Ugh, I hate when a provider who was absolutely perfect either relocates or retires. Anyone have a dentist they love that you want to recommend??

Before my daughter's first dental visit, I specifically called and asked if we could opt out of fluoride and X-rays. I was told this could be discussed with the doctor. Their intake paperwork even asks if you consent to X-rays, and I clearly marked no. I thought there would be a conversation. Instead, there was none. Dr. B. Gene Whitehead came in and immediately told me that if I refused X-rays, we should just leave, because they would not provide any care -- not even a simple cleaning, which I was prepared to pay cash for. I even said I would pay for the X-rays but did not want them performed, and the response was still, "No cleaning without X-rays." Dr. B. Gene Whitehead spoke to me in a dismissive and condescending way, as if patients have no say and must just obey whatever he decides. This was supposed to be my daughter's very first dental experience, and instead, I walked out feeling completely humiliated. I'm not someone who cries easily, but I left in tears from how belittled and disrespected I felt. That says everything about how poorly the situation was handled. A professional could still decline to provide a service, but with kindness and respect -- which was completely lacking here. I also want to clarify that this is not a holistic or patient-centered practice, despite how it may be recommended. They push X-rays and fluoride, and Dr. B. Gene Whitehead was very old-fashioned in his approach, showing no willingness to listen to patient concerns. Thankfully, I have already found another dentist who was happy to see my daughter for a cleaning without forcing X-rays. So yes, it is possible -- and patients deserve the right to choose what is best for their children. Overall: rude, unprofessional, misleading, and a complete waste of time.

I initially tried to give this office a fair chance despite noticing during our first two visits that he seemed impatient with my (now) 4-year-old. But after what happened this morning, I cannot stay silent. I genuinely wish I had checked the real Yelp reviews instead of relying on the reviews on their website, because those website reviews can be bought, and they do not reflect what actually happens here. The Yelp reviews describe exactly what we experienced today. My daughter is only 4. She was doing much better this time than last time, still a little nervous and fidgety, which is completely normal for a child her age. When Christopher Chung walked into the room, he was immediately rude and impatient. My daughter accidentally kicked his leg while crying from fear. Instead of responding with care or understanding, he said, "I would appreciate it if you do not kick me," and then added that he "just had surgery" and couldn't look at her mouth with her "acting that way." She wasn't acting out, she was scared. He showed no compassion, no patience, and absolutely no child-appropriate bedside manner, which is shocking considering he works with children every single day. At that point, I stood up, told him we were leaving due to how he was treating my daughter, and requested corporate contact information. While I know there may not be much more I can do formally, I will warn other parents. Your children deserve a dentist who is gentle, patient, and genuinely good with kids, not someone who gets irritated by normal child behavior. Also, the responses this office leaves under their negative reviews on their website are extremely misleading. When multiple parents share the same exact concerns about the same dentist, that is not a coincidence, it's a pattern. For the office to reply claiming he is "the best" and that children "love him" is honestly absurd. To the office: I do not care for a scripted or dismissive reply under this review. My responsibility as a parent is to warn others before bringing their child here. And no, Christopher Chung (I will not refer to him as a doctor) is absolutely not the best dentist. From my experience and others, he is the worst. These are children he is dealing with. If he cannot be patient, compassionate, or gentle, then he should work with adults or reconsider practicing altogether. To PARENTS/CAREGIVERS/GUARDIANS: Please read the Yelp reviews and other review resources before taking your child here. It's unfortunate, but the only thing we can do as parents is to spread the word, so other families do not have to go through such experience.
