I have been receiving occupational therapy here following hand surgery, and the therapist treating me is also the owner of the practice. During my appointment, she voluntarily shared a story about a former patient who used pronouns outside of "he" or "she." She stated that she refused to use those pronouns and expressed that she does not respect people who do. She also commented that her daughter is "too much of a stickler" for LGBTQ+ rights. This conversation had nothing to do with my treatment, yet it was brought into a healthcare setting where patients should feel safe, respected, and welcome regardless of their identity. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I found these comments deeply disappointing and offensive. I also have family members who use they/them pronouns, so hearing a healthcare provider openly describe refusing to respect a patient's identity was unsettling. Everyone is entitled to their personal beliefs. However, when those beliefs are expressed in a way that signals certain patients may not be treated with the same respect or dignity, people deserve to know before choosing where to receive care. If you are non-binary, gender-fluid, or simply expect your healthcare providers to respect patients' identities, I would encourage you to consider this experience before choosing this practice.

Our social worker at Thornwald, Kathleen, was very supportive in our onboarding process all the way through to our transition to home health at the end of our stay. The medical staff was phenomenal in their care and ongoing support of my mom's complex needs with her wound care, and the ongoing OT and PT helped her gain the strength, balance and independence to be able to transition home safely. She also thought the food was great, the variety of the menu was wonderful, and the facility was very clean. It's never an easy situation for your loved one to need this level of care, and I have to commend all of the social workers, nursing staff and therapists that manage and triage so many needs at the same time. They truly are a blessing, and I'm so grateful for all of their support during a vulnerable time in my mom's healing process. I can't say enough good things about our experience at Thornwald.

Right off the bat, I felt very at ease with her as a therapist. We established my goals for seeking therapy and discussed strategies for treatment. She's very knowledgeable and took the time to really educate me on the various treatment options we could explore. Talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy helped me become better equipped to deal with my feelings of anxiety and talk myself down before they started to get the better of me. I feel stronger as a person now and more able to handle the curve balls that life throws my way. I'm really grateful for her help. I'd recommend her to anyone who needs help dealing with life's difficult issues.

When I arrived my first day of treatment, I was so scared and had no self-confdence after falling and breaking my right shoulder. When I learned that my employer had a benefit through the company Carrot for reimbursement for…read morepostpartum services I started to look into doulas in our area. As a first time mom, I really had no idea what help a doula could provide, but after doing some research and talking to my OBGYN, my husband and I reached out to Amy at Dauphin County Doulas. Amy set up a zoom call for us to connect and discuss what I was hoping to achieve working together and it was a great experience from the very beginning. Education and baby basics, as well as another set of hands to help, were my main goals. My husband and I both can honestly say we got that and more working with Amy! I had some complications during my delivery that got my breastfeeding journey off to a slow start. Amy was at my house the day after I got home from the hospital and provided invaluable support and knowledge about nursing in those critical first days. Having someone so knowledgeable to weigh in on our specific circumstances in my home, without me having to go to a lactation consultant appointment at the hospital, saved my husband and I hours of going down internet rabbit holes as first time parents. She helped me as I dealt with some baby blues and the physical issues that come with having a c-section. From making sure I was eating a healthy lunch to helping me with the baby between feeds so I could take a much needed nap, I wouldn't have been able to heal and recover as quickly as I did without Amy helping me 2-3 days a week the first few weeks. We worked together until my son was around 8 weeks old and the version of us she left was night and day different from the version she saw day one. He is a thriving, happy baby who is gaining weight at a really good rate exclusively breastfeeding and is sleeping through the night already at 12 weeks because of our time spent working together. I will forever be grateful for Amy getting us through those difficult first weeks and can't recommend working with her and Dauphin County Doulas enough. We will definitely be calling them for baby #2 down the road!

I had such a positive birth and postpartum experience thanks to their support and expertise. With Amy and Cheyla's help, I was able to approach labor with confidence and empowerment, and experience the fast and unmedicated birth I had hoped for (but did not think possible). I highly recommend Dauphin County doulas! Everyone is super helpful, professional, and communicative.
