Grumpy was a very nice bar and the bartender was very nice. The ambience was very good as well.

My spouse and I were visiting from San Francisco Bay Area and we both loved the bar. Not sure if this fits the definition of a divy bar, but more of a local neighborhood bar. The bartenders were friendly and they there was live music from a guy playing an acoustical guitar and singing the night we visited. We had a good time at Grumpy's Bar. One of my friends brought us here for after-dinner drinks and it was a great choice. What I like best about this place is its chill, laid-back atmosphere (at least, during the time we were there, around 9:15pm on a Friday night). Grumpy's is located on the south side of downtown Montreal. It's on a residential-looking strip with a bunch of restaurants and bars. The storefronts are fairly nondescript, especially for Grumpy's. This bar is situated in the basement of what looks like a four-story apartment. It's small with fenced-in patio seating, both in front and back. The front patio has a street view while the back patio is enclosed with tall wooden fencing. We settled in in a comfortable corner next to the door to the back patio. This room was quiet. There was only one other group. The room had a tufted banquette, small wooden tables, chairs, and stools. The furniture, and interior overall, were well-worn. This place has a traditional, old-school vibe to it. I appreciated that it wasn't too loud and packed with obnoxious drunk people. This bar is known for live late night music, however. I think we left just as the music was starting. I spent a bit of time on the back patio as well. There were a few groups back there. It was actually calm and relaxing. The beers were cold and tasty, but the Diet Coke was not. It was severely watered down. Good service. read more

Cruddy dive bar, hole in the wall with a poor selection of over-priced, watered-down beers on tap. Kind of place that you leave feeling like you need a shower. To add to the 'charm' I was aggressively harassed by a very unpleasant bartender for leaving the empty bar too slowly - hours before closing time. They don't even want people drinking at their bar. Real sh#$tty vibe there overall. Do not recommend wasting your evening there when Montreal has no shortage of awesome bars with much better drinks. read more

I had such a fantastic time here the other night! The word pub comes from "public house" - any building open to the public. Grumpy's feel like a traditional gathering place where everyone is a friend. I came here solo after Chez Paree to wait while Larry S. and his cousin got "massages". I sat at the bar and immediately fell into a great conversation with the bartender (originally from Akron, Ohio; it wasn't cold enough for him there). When his attention was required tending to other patrons, he introduced me to some other folks, with whom I had a nice chat. Shortly after they took the photo I posted, I managed to knock my beer all over the bar. Despite this douchey move, I was not shamed or ejected from the bar. Instead, I was introduced to yet another friendly patron. When Larry and his cousin returned, they ordered beers and we moved to a table with our new friend. A great conversation about life in Montreal, life in the US and life in general ensued. We nearly closed the place! Our new friend even contacted us the following day to invite us out again. Success! They had a good beer menu with reasonable pricing and some live music happening in the corner. Sit at the bar if you want to meet people! read more

I'm not a barfly, and I don't consider myself a connoisseur of drinking establishments. I love going to Grumpy's on a Wednesday night for the jazz jam session. Grumpy's is a nice bar that caters to a wide range of people. You'll often find students here due to the proximity to Concordia, McGill, LaSalle, Herzing, and other colleges I've forgotten to mention and didn't attend. Wednesday nights are my favorite time to visit, because of the weekly jazz jam sessions, one of my favourite jams in the city. It's a nice opportunity to play with established musicians as well as up-and-coming new talent. I've been in the audience and onstage here, and it's always nice to come back to the stone walls and bar stools in this subterranean hangout. read more

Grumpy's is a pretty typical dive bar experience, although it was a quiet night when Jared and I walked in. We easily claimed some seats at the long bar before chatting with the bartender about what was on tap. I ordered an imperial pint of Cheval Blanc and greatly enjoyed sipping it while Jared and I talked about anything and everything. I could easily see this establishment getting very busy on warmer nights when the college students are around, but we were there during the winter holidays, so I was happy to sit alongside the local crowd while the hockey game was broadcast in the background. read more

This is a super cool bar on Bishop with live music and good looking people. In Montreal, one can have a hard time finding a place that's off the beaten path of douche-baggery, especially right ON the path of douche-baggery, (i.e. Ste- Catherine) but it's nice to know that amidst the "clubs" with covers and strip bars with striped shirts, there exists a place for fans of good music and good people. Despite 90% of the customers speaking French, you could mistake Grumpy's for a classic pub in New York, or Dublin for that matter. Underground, dark, chill... one TV off to the side just in case you want to watch something on TV... that's the way an Irish pub should be; heck, even the TV is optional. Bartender was great. I discovered this spot 9 years ago when I was invited to play some of my original songs at "Chick Pickin' Mondays" and haven't stopped going ever since. What a great little place. A friend and I recently visited Montreal and spent two of our three nights here. A super cozy, neighborhood joint. After spending almost $40 on two rounds of beer at some awful sports bar up the road, we followed a quartet of musicians into Grumpy's. Grumpys is a fun basement bar where the locals were hanging out on this night. Our waitress at Hurley's recommended this place to us for cheaper beers $6? and live music. No music on this night, but there was an old fashioned trivia show. We watched the locals play for a bit before moving on. "M" wants to beleive he liked it here but "A" remembers it correctly. We left and "M" said "I don't think I got that place. Wish the bartender made a better vodka seltzer so that will cost another star. read more

My husband and I love dive bars and always look for some cool spots when we go to new cities. We were excited to try Grumpy's based on the Yelp reviews, but were very disappointed. One of the earlier reviews gave this a one star and mentioned an unfriendly bartender who only talked to his two friends, and I think that's the exact same bartender we had. When we arrived and sat down, it was just us and two guys at the end who were clearly friends with the bartender. They were watching the Sopranos on Netflix and acted like we were a burden for stopping in on a Wednesday afternoon. Without any sort of friendly greeting, he asked what we wanted and we asked if he had a blonde ale. He brought us two pilsners (we saw the taps, which clearly said Pilsner not blonde ale) and just set them down and went back to his friends. Didn't acknowledge us again until we asked for the check to leave. I wish we would have gone at a different time with a friendlier bartender because the atmosphere seemed like my kinda dive bar, but the experience definitely rubbed me the wrong way and we won't be back. Customers shouldn't be made to feel like a burden when they enter your bar. read more

Casual venue with $4 pints of beer. Nothing fancy but the people are really nice that work there and they seem to have a lot of regular customers who all know each other. On Sunday we hit Trivia night after being upstairs at Comedyworks. That was my first trivia night at a pub and it was fun. Last night after the improv we popped down for a beer and there was a good jazz band playing. Not too loud that you couldn't talk though. It's Montreal and a beautiful city. Grumpy's Bar is situated in a short row of other pubs. Grumpy's is exactly what you would expect, very much no frills. We ended up sitting outside on the 5 table patio because it was such a nice day. Do not expect fancy just expect well poured drinks that you will probably have to go to the bar and get yourself. I consider this a watering hole at best and I don't thing they are going for more than that but they delivered on expectation and it is in a great location. They do have bands play there but they were setting up as we were moving on to the next location so did not get a chance to enjoy that. read more
