I've been ordering chipotle fries from Guad since they came out, they used to sauce them very well. The last 2 times I've ordered them they've been awfully dry. No sauce. First time i let it slide because i thought maybe it was a bad day.. but this is the result of the second time. & i called and asked about it, they told me the cooks "measure" the amount of sauce they put on them. i have been eating these long enough to know thats bs. They also told me there is nothing they can do... I would've at least accepted a cup of sauce, something. Just a heads up if you order these maybe ordering in restaurant is your best bet. read more

Great food great service. I have eaten here a few times, but have not had a chance to try their lunch buffet which I will do soon.

My wife and I went for dinner and drinks and was very disappointed... Ordered drinks margaritas... They were weak to say the least. Ordered chori-queso dip... Came without tortilla chips to eat with. Asked another waiter if we could have some tortilla chips... He brought them out in a paper bag. I didn't think we'd have to order the tortilla chips separately. Ordered a burrito... It was supposed to be ground beef but instead was strips of some kind of meat. When we received our bill, we were charged $6.00 for the chips. 1 burrito, 1 chori-queso dip 2 margaritas (they were $.99 each)... $33.00 bill Ridiculous!!! We won't be back... We try to support local businesses but are finding it hard to do when you get ripped off (in my opinion) Have a nice day read more

This was raved about by some locals and my partner was famished so we bopped over for an early dinner Friday. It was pretty busy already but is quite spacious (2 large rooms and a patio) so we were sat in our seat of choice immediately. We ordered: Frozen margaritas (3) Pretty weak Complimentary chips and salsa I thought both were bad. My companion really liked both. Wilbur got the #1 combo "Guadalajara" Which had taco, tostada, enchilada, rice and beans. He chose ground beef as his meat and licked his plate. I got the chicken fajitas with flour tortillas. It came with sour cream, guacamole, Spanish rice, beans with cheese, some lettuce and tomato. Grease City. No bueno!! Weird seasoning on it too. Like chili powder and salt (?) mixed with a lot of oil...? I ate a bit, my partner had some, the rest I threw out. But the guac, rice and beans were good. The service was good. I'd return and try different items and as I mentioned above, many people seem taken with the place and cuisine, which is a consideration when dining out ; ) I'm so flexible and accommodating. read more

My family has been coming to Guadalajara at least once a week for years, and when I have visitors in town, this is the place I bring them. The food is wonderful and the staff friendly. However, I experienced my first disappointment regarding surprise charges of which I was not properly informed in advance. First, I was charged for sauce for a side order of one small (under $3) item. The gentleman on the phone asked if I would like the sauce, and I said I'd like it if it normally comes with the order. I reasonably didn't expect, and he didn't explain, that when I requested whatever normally comes with the order I would be charged beyond the price listed on the menu for the order. The sauce isn't listed and priced separately on the menu. Second, I was charged a to-go charge which is not listed on the menu or the website and which I was not informed about during my order. My family, which includes a couple vulnerable older people, understandably don't feel safe dining in during this once-in-a-century pandemic. However, we have continued to order take-out in part to support one of our favorite restaurants during this difficult period. This surprise charge to take-out seems especially silly since we're now having to pay $7.95 plus tax for the chips and salsa we would have previously been served without charge dining in. Again, I'm a big fan, and I figure that Guadalajara deserves well-meaning feedback. These are relatively small charges, but now discovering that this may have been happening since we started ordering out regularly in March- I previously did not receive itemized receipts- is disappointing. If a business is going to place these charges on loyal customers, the business should make this clear on the website/menu or, if the customer seem uncertain, in communications with the customer. read more

Ms T and I have spent a considerable number of nights back in Muscatine lately and finally had a chance to eat at a few of the local restaurants that we had not been able to try before. We had two meals at Guadalajara and found it to be a solid place for Mexican. Muscatine has at least four credible restaurants; El Olmito, El Allende, Las Lomas and Guadalajara. I have tried them all and rank them in the order given, but all are OK. I have not tried Restaurant Izalco. So we had one dinner and one lunch at Guadalajara. For the dinner, Ms T had Enchiladas Suizas which she felt were good and worth going back for. I ordered my go-to dish for a new restaurant, huevos con chorizo. They were fine but I forgot to say I wanted corn tortillas and ended up with the gringo default. I asked for fresh chiles jalapenos and that was not understood, I got pickled. It is funny, some places know exactly what I want when I ask for fresh chiles to be cooked in with the eggs and sausage. Some seem to have no clue, they either bring sprinkle raw slices on top or bring the pickled variety. This was not a deal breaker, but it was disappointing. The second visit was a few weeks later for lunch. We were running errands downtown and Guadalajara was close by. Ms T just had taquitos which were fine and I had a fish tank of caldo de pollo. The caldo was good. I was able to doctor it with lime and salsa and made it very good. I had to give in and took more than half of it home. Guadalajara is an OK place for sure. When we lived in Muscatine we frequented El Zarape until Paul and Gloria sold it and then we were regulars at Imelda's. Both are long gone but we had a lot of good meals there with our kids. If I lived here again, I would be pretty happy with the selection of Mexican food and would try to rotate through El Allende, Las Lomas, Guadalajara and probably Izalco (Need to try it). I would reserve a special place on my lunch schedule to get tacos at El Olmito. I hope Muscatine appreciates these places. Solid three stars for Guadalajara, A-OK. read more

We eat here every single time we are in town. It is hands down the best place to eat in Muscatine! In fact, we can't find a better Mexican restaurant ANYWHERE! Everything is great, but in my opinion, the one thing you can't pass up is the white cheese dip/queso blanco. The staff is always amazing and the restaurant has such a nice, clean, homey feel. (Don't forget about the coffee shop too that just opened right next door! You could just stay here all day!) I just can't say enough good things about this place.. Go try it for yourself! Visiting from out of town and some family suggested Guadalajara and ended up VERY happy with the meal. Started with complimentary chips & salsa and loved them both. I got a combo (#3) and could barely eat it all. Large portions for sure. Wife ordered the enchiladas and didn't come close to eating it all. Rice & beans, I thought, were pretty standard. The tamale was above average, the beef enchilada and quesadilla were out of this world. Loved the flavor of the beef and really dug the flour tortilla of the quesadilla. Dining area was clean and wait staff friendly. I understand their lunch buffet is unbelievable with great food at a great price. Definitely will be back next time we are in town. read more

I ate here twice while camping nearby. The second visit involved a free buffet (for buying a gift certificate). Tuesdays and Thursdays are dollar taco days. You can get chicken, ground beef or steak. The tacos are the kind with two small corn shells, the meat, onions, cilantro, etc. You can also get the hard shell versions. The tacos were very good! The meat was not strongly seasoned but you can adjust things a little. I had the buffet today. I was impressed by the chicken and beef fajita mixture. They also had some chicken drumsticks covered with a reddish orange sauce that was tasty. It was a sweet but sort of tomatoey (is that a word?) sauce. Yum! The beans are rice were fine... It's hard to make them overly exciting but they were certainly good. The salsa was okay but I kind of like a bit more heat and cilantro. It was fine though. Hands down, this is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in Muscatine. It's clean and comfortable inside and the service is great. I urge you to try it. Just go in knowing that the food can be nice and salty and have a fair amount of fat in it. That's what makes it so delicious! read more

Made a last-minute stop for food and found this little treasure. We walked in and were greeted by a friendly host and seated immediately. The host accidentally dropped a menu and offered to get us a new one that was clean. I was impressed with the professionalism of the host. Our order was taken and without much delay, our food was served. The chips are severed in a bag and the salsa is already in a to-go friendly container so you are already set to take home what you don't eat. I am relatively picky about salsa and quac, 2 of the simplest recipes to master in Mexican cuisine. I salsa was really good and I loved their homemade quac. I have the shrimp fajitas which were fantastic. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and there was the right proportion of peppers and onions. Even the beans and rice were perfect. The check came at the appropriate time and right on the money. Great price, great service, great food! A great find! read more

And when they screwed up our order and we tried to get it fixed the manager was determined not to assist in making the situation right and instead wanted to tell me that since we ordered through door dash instead of their delivery service he essentially didn't care about our order or resolving the issue. I've never encountered such unprofessional and dumbfounding behavior from someone who is supposed to be in a management position in my entire life. You can get better customer service and food for a fraction of the price at any number of fast food chains. The buffet was less than mediocre. The meat was drenched in grease. The taco shells were not appetizing at all. Our service was slow. Don't waste your time. Service is mediocre. 3 adults, 2 kids ordered food, we ate 3 bowls of chips & salsa and waited over an hour for food. Had 2 jumbo Margaritas that had no liquor whatsoever (but they charged us as if they did). Finally we told them to keep the food, we were no longer hungry. Miraculously the food was whisked out after 75 minutes of waiting. This isn't the first time I've had an issue with waiting for food. This is my fourth time going here and each time it gets worse. We ate at Guadalajara to celebrate my birthday. We have had their Saturday buffet which is wonderful. My husband and I had a great margarita to start the meal. He ordered the chimichanga dinner and i ordered the combination fajitas which have chicken, shrimp,and steak. When our orders arrived, my fajita dinner had zero shrimp! We got hold of the waitress and she corrected the oversight quickly. I enjoyed my meal. My husband's chimichangas came with 3 small flour tortillas which contained only a few pieces of steak inside. He said that without the sour cream and guacamole on them, they would have been very bland. While we may return for the buffet sometime, we do not plan to purchase off the menu again. read more

Worst tortas ever! I could count the four pieces of Al pastor meat on the torta I ordered. One side of the meat was over done(burnt a little) the hitch horchata was good, the chips were good the salsa you could taste it was going bad! Best Mexican restaurant in Muscatine. The Mayan enchiladas are amazing and the frozen strawberry margaritas are the best. I have never had any problems with the service.
