Taste Place is a solid Chinese spot living on 965! It was a Friday and I really wasn't feeling like cooking. Alas, Taste Place takeout FTW. I popped online and ordered a smorgasbord of items for later pickup. The order was ready on time; completely correct, piping hot and delicious. Pricing seemed on point as each entree is two servings at least. The egg soup was good, but had a more smoky flavor than I'm used to. The Rangoons and vegetable rolls were worth a taste, but I'd try other appetizers next time. The sweet and sour chicken was cooked to perfection-- my kids devoured it along with the chicken lo mien. I thoroughly enjoyed the kung pao chicken and Mongolian beef. They had some kick to them! (The menu does a great job showing which dishes are on the spicier side.) Happy Chinese New Year 2024! I ordered after work for take home and they were timely before the rush. This will be another great option for take out after work to grab. I was excited they had more traditional options instead of the Americanized dishes. We tried shredded hot and sour potatoes, spicy mapo tofu with ground pork, eggplant potatoes green peppers in brown sauce, and cucumber with garlic. All were pretty tasty. Excited to try their other dishes like dandan noodles, sliced beef in hot chili oil, and fried beef with cumin. Atmosphere seems great but I haven't dined in yet. I love love love Sichuan cuisine, so imagine how excited I was for this place to pop up! Known for bold flavors and of course the use of szechuan peppercorns, Sichuan cuisine originates from the Sichuan Province of southwestern China. So basically, it's spicy and delicious! The best part about Taste Place is that their menu is packed with authentic signature dishes, as well as "American Chinese" favorites. I went here for lunch and ordered the Wontons in chili oil, the spicy mapo tofu and ground pork, and the cucumbers with minced garlic. Everything was delicious and drool-worthy. The tofu was perfectly cooked with a vibrant and spicy sauce that now lives in my head rent-free, the cucumber was the perfect fresh bite between all the savory goodness. Wow! This place is incredible and the quality is consistent. I went two days ago and enjoyed it so much I went back today. The first time I had sweet and sour chicken and our table had potstickers and crab rangoon. Everything was delicious. Today I bought a smorgasbord and got 3 different appetizers (this time I added pork egg rolls) and had sesame chicken. The sesame chicken is even good cold so you know that's something special. My only critique would be that they didn't give much extra sauce. I asked once when I dined in and got one of the tiny containers and when I said I need a bit more the server looked at me like **I'll give you a container to take what's left on your bowl but I'm not giving you more**. It's almost comical now that I think about it. If you ever watched Different Strokes in the 80s, it was the "whatcha talking' 'bout, Willis" look, but much less exaggerated. Anywho, I asked for extra sweet and sour with my to go order today and, nope, none extra. They must have every morsel measured out to know exactly how much sauce they think you need! But I'm saucy and like my sauce so that's a bit of a downer but it won't stop me from going back. They prepare food FAST so I guess that's what I will take for a win bc extra sauce won't happen! read more

I don't get to North Liberty very often, but I do love Chinese food. So, when I saw a post in a Facebook group about how wonderful Taste Place was, I filed the name away in the back of my mind. I ended up stopping there for dinner last night. This is a really weird place to start, but I had a side of their plain fried rice, and it was honestly the best fried rice I've ever had. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food in my life. I've eaten Chinese food in crappy buffets in towns you've never heard of. I've eaten Chinese food in incredibly successful restaurants in Manhattan. I've even eaten Halal Chinese food in a city in New Jersey. So, I'm not some guy who's tried fried rice at like two places and decided this one was the best. My wife ordered egg drop soup, and pot stickers. Both were excellent. When she ordered, the waiter told her it was a big bowl. I initially thought that was a little odd. Pot stickers aren't that big of an appetizer. So, I wouldn't think someone would worry pot stickers and a bowl of soup would be too much for a person. Then he brought out the bowl of soup. This thing was gigantic. I helped my wife with the soup and the pot stickers. Even with us both eating the soup, our leftovers were almost enough to fill a quart container to the brim. I'm glad, because we're going to enjoy all that leftover soup. In New York, a Chinese friend of mine would order his food in Chinese. He told me that every Chinese restaurant has two menus, the printed menu of fake Chinese food for Americans, and a menu of real Chinese food that most customers never see. He was probably just yanking my chain. For all I know, he could have been ordering General Tso's, and just telling me it was something cool. The reason I shared that riveting story is because it seems to me like Taste Place actually gives you both menus that my friend talked about. They have a section of their menu that is clearly labeled as "American Chinese food." That section has the stuff we all know and love from Chinese take-out places. They also have sections for chicken, pork, beef, and vegetable dishes that have English descriptions, but Chinese names. I can't read / speak Chinese. So, I don't know what my meal was called, but it consisted of vermicelli with ground pork and Thai chiles in a spicy sauce. I absolutely loved it! As I said, don't get to North Liberty often. Had a reservation for a group luncheon. They have a private area that is very nice for an event for a small group. As stated by an earlier entry, they use tablecoths with paper covers which adds a nice touch. The big round tables have the fun lazy susans. Service was acceptable. Oh, the food. It was good. The food is very sweet but with that sweetness level, the food will give your mouth a sweet treat. The service was superb, stating the fact that our friends who moved from Ames to North Liberty are the owners of the restaurant. Since we know the owners pretty well, we were the only ones there. We ordered takeout from this restaurant and our dishes were all ready in 15 minutes, the speed was fantastic! I really appreciated the highlighting of several dishes not common in most other Chinese restaurants in the area. We ordered the Stir Fried Cabbage, Eggplant with Garlic sauce, chicken and broccoli, dandan noodles, and the wontons with Chili oil. Each dish was made very well. The cabbage and dandan noodles were particularly stand out dishes. I plan to order the dandan noodles each time we order from Taste Place, they were that good! Let me start by saying this is one of the first Asian restaurants I've been to that if you ask for extra extra spicy, you better mean it! I appreciate that when we said we wanted it as spicy as possible, they almost made us regret those words! That, out of the way, this is the best Asian food in the area! The Mongolian beef is immediately one of my favorite dishes I've had in Iowa. The spicy chicken was so perfectly crispy, and the beef was just pure deliciousness! The restaurant is smaller but doesn't feel crowded. The food all came out fast, especially the appetizers, which I'll admit were a bit lackluster compared to the main dishes. I'll avoid the dumplings in the future, but the pot stickers were decent. I won't be coming for the appetizers though because oh my those main dishes are amazing read more

OMG...the sliced beef in hot chili oil is beyond incredible . I ordered at a 2 level of spice which was great for us. There is not a Midwest no spice version...you could dial or down to a 1, but it would still have some kick. Spice aside, the flavor was unlike any Chinese joint outside of Chicago. Mapo tofu is also amazing as the chefs tofu with pork. The flavor of the garlic broccoli was a stunning surprise. I tried kung pao chx from the American Chinese food list. Very good, but I would rec. sticking with the Chinese specialties. 90% or more of Chinese menus are the same...same food, even printed by the same outfit. Not this place. Service great. Very friendly service, and food as good as Chinatown in San Francisco and mom & pop joints in Beijing. Srsly. We had pork egg rolls because they were half price on Monday. Good stuff and great sauce. From the Chef's recommendation section on the other side of the "American Menu" I ordered Mu Xu pork. I thought it might be Moo Shu. Nope. Way better. Wood ear mushrooms, egg, and cucumber cooked with pork in a sauce like none I've ever had. Then. Shredded hot & sour potatoes. Dayum. (Ok, I love food. I can't help it.) Spicy, sour, (obv) and crunchy. Our cute waiter brought us honeydew at the end of our meal. The two of us have a lot of leftovers in the back seat right now. Was eager to try Taste Place, esp given all the 5 star reviews--but sadly, we did not have a similar experience. We did take out: Potstickers were fine (sauce was nice), but the egg rolls were slightly overcooked and also greasy--I'm guessing the oil wasn't quite hot enough when they went in. Shrimp fried rice was okay but nothing great, DH gave it a 5 out of 10. The sesame chicken was probably a 6 out of 10, the sauce was much thinner than typical takeout, which I liked, but again, the chicken itself seemed like it had been left in the fryer a little too long. The big disappointment was the house special lo mein, which had literally no flavor. You could see the sauce, but it had absolutely no taste at all, even the various proteins didn't really taste of anything. The amount of food was decent for the price, but none of the food was anything I would go back for, which is disappointing. Glad other people had better experiences, as the restaurant is clean and nicely appointed, the service was prompt, and the people were very friendly....but we won't be returning. read more

We went there yesterday and we loved it! It was authentic Chinese food instead of being all Americanized! We had the garlic chicken and General Tso's tofu, with the pot stickers to start. The vegetables that came with both dishes were fresh and the sauces were excellent with vibrant ingredients. We bought home enough for two more meals each. Super sad that Yang Chow Wok closed. We loved their crab rangoons. The crab rangoons at Taste Place are good. The chicken fried rice is the best fried rice I've had since I worked in a chinese restaurant many many many years ago in Chicago. Delicious!! The chicken and garlic sauce was also very good. We ordered takeout and I'm looking forward to trying more items on the menu. So happy they here. We've tried a few other chinese restaurants in the area and this is by far the best. read more

It's great to have a new Chinese restaurant in the area! It has a bright, clean feel and even the restroom left me impressed. Since they have both American and traditional menus, I took my father (who is Chinese) for lunch and we both enjoyed our meals. My dad ordered the fish and tofu and I got the vegetable lo mein. He asked them to reduce the spice because it was listed as spice level 3 on the menu. When they brought the dish, they said they could remake it if it was still too spicy! It wasn't a busy time for the restaurant at that hour, but I still thought that was pretty generous! The lo mein was a little bit bland for my taste, but otherwise good. The portions were large, and the prices for our dishes seemed pretty reasonable. We also took advantage of their half-price discount on some of their appetizers (certain days of the week) and we thought their spring rolls were very tasty. We will be visiting Taste Place again for sure! read more
