We had lunch at Guatemalan Kitchen today. First, the food is tasty and plenty. For the main dish, we had the combo plate with grilled shrimp, fried egg and fish fillet, which comes with Spanish rice, beans and salad; and another one with grilled chicken and shrimp which comes with 8 tortillas. Although we are hungry, we couldn't finish the plate and had plenty left overs. The one down side is service can be a little slow since there is just one server working the whole restaurant. read more

I am not out in the Phoenixville area very often. Since we were, we wanted to try and find something unique. Guatemalan Kitchen delivered. Describing Guatemalan Kitchen as a hole in the wall does not really do it justice. You enter the building into a sizable and very clean seating area. We had to head to the back to check out menus and place our orders. You also grab your own drinks from their refrigerators. In the back there are also a mini grocery offerings. However, once ordered, we could seat ourselves and wait as they would bring out the food. Everything we ordered food wise delivered tremendous value. We got the ceviche, which came in a huge margarita type glass and was full of shrimp. It was also very tasty and we went as far as to dip our other items in to get every last drop. The Guatemalan Enchiladas were a bit tricky for me to eat, but had great flavor. Something about the beets that tied everything together! Finally, the Dobladas were a rock solid addition for a minimum price. Again, beyond the pure quality, this restaurant delivered high value. Guatemalan Kitchen is a clear recommend imo. This place is fantastic. When you go in, you usually see a bunch of Central American people in there, so you know it is good. The prices are VERY reasonable. $7 will get you a full and satisfying meal. Their salsa/ hot sauces are very good. You can't go wrong with the pupusas, the sopes or the Guatemalan enchiladas ( not your typical enchilada) I haven't tried the pizza yet but I hear good things about it. read more

Prices are great and the food is unreal. Can't ask for more than that. I had guacamole to start and some sort of chicken entree as my main. Everything was incredible. The chicken fell off the bone, the molé adjacent sauce was incredible, and the hot sauce they provided (which appeared to be homemade) was maybe the best hot sauce I've ever had. I love this place. The food is consistently good. I love their pupusas and their grilled pork ribs are outstanding! A surprising treat is how great their fried chicken is! The menu is extensive and there are so many options. ordered: -Parrallada grilled meat sampler with chicken, steak and sausage. Served with black beans and macaroni salad. -Sopa de mano de res or the cow's foot soup. Served with homemade corn tortillas and lime cilantro and onion. Don't come here if you are hungry. It's been 20 minutes and my food haven't came out yet. I am the only customer at this moment and it's a little pass 2pm. I was ready to go after waiting for my plate for 25mins. I already have my jacket on and is about to tell the kitchen that I wanted it to go instead. Then suddenly, the guy went out with my food which is almost cold. Note that I ordered grilled meat. Food is not good. I got Costillas a la Parilla which is that almost cold grilled meat with bones, a scoop of cold rice and macaroni and a cup of bean sauce. I also had the Enrolladas. Both doesn't taste well. I uplifted the taste by dosing on the hot sauce. Overall, I don't recommend. And definitely not coming back. read more

An easy to miss spot: but you DON'T want to miss this. Not only is it delicious, the prices are extremely reasonable compared to some of the overpriced sports on this street. Not too busy during lunch on a Saturday, pretty quiet and homey. My friend and I were confused at first whether to be seated, but you walk to the back and order at the front first. There was only a hot sauce so I wish there were others. The food portions are generous and it is good value for what you get. Small hole-in-the-wall place putting out good food. The pollo tacos and al pastor tacos are super delicious. Tortillas are fresh and handmade on premises which makes a big difference in flavor. Great pork mouthfeel and flavor. Excellent corn tortillas. Not quite perfect execution in dish ingredient balance. I ordered the Pork (Adobado) tacos ($2.50 each.) The pork was very delicious: mostly fall apart, savoury, and well-seasoned with Central American spices. I found the tacos to be dominated by the flavor and texture of the (admittedly great) double corn tortillas. I wanted to give them five stars, but the tacos were too tortilla forward and did not allow the pork to shine. Was really excited to support them in their new location and went in for pickup. They now share space with X-Press pizza. The place is downright is not clean. Trash on the floor behind the counter and in the kitchen. The self serve ice cream is frosted over, a dirty scooper stuck in the half melted container. We ordered the chili nachos. What we got was stale chips with a smattering of beans, some cheese , sliced chicken all topped with... chunky pizza sauce. There was no mistaking it- could taste the basil. Guatemalan Kitchen was our choice for non-diet lunch yesterday, and it was a ten-star choice for taste! Robert P. mentioned the great smells of this food, YES! That was the first thing to hit me! It smelled so good! Amy O. said these were the best ribs she had in her life, so I had to try them! OMFG, Amy, no joke! They're not brown-&-pink BBQ type ribs, they're white, sauceless, boneless (though they missed a little bone in mine, but I didn't care they were that good!), and covered in black char. This char is the "asada," or burnt part (not bark, char). The flavor was one of those enlightening experiences like after a deep meditation, or smoking something you shouldn't, because I finally came to the purest understanding of the word "asada." ASADA means this black gook on my meat, that is food crack, and I cannot stop thinking about it all day afterward, I want to go back and eat more now, now, now! I just want that black stuff on my tongue, so effing delishosaurus! Alton Brown can teach you the chemistry to make the blackened part so good, but all you need to know is the seasoning is phenomenal, and when it gets burnt crisp, it's even better! Like crack better. My husband got the Parrilladas (steak, sausage, chicken). Chicken was very flavorful, tender and moist, steak was thin but tender, and sausage was good not amazing. Chicken def stole the show on that one. Husband's also came with homemade tortillas. I wanted to try a bite of tortilla because so many had said they are homemade. I was bummed about the flavor on those, pretty bland. I prefer homemade to any alternative, but they could stand to amp up the flave on those. All two-figure dishes came with rice, macaroni salad (? is this Guatemalan?), and black beans, which was really like black bean soup. The sides are decent, filler foods. It is the meat that really drives you wild. And by two-figure, I mean $11, which was a swindle for this level of taste. Staff was friendly and helpful. Both times I called there was a little bit of a language barrier, and though I know Spanish, I am intimidated by the many and varied accents of South American countries, so I did not try it. We managed to communicate nonetheless. So have patience and your mouth will be rewarded (as Alton might say). No postres (desserts) which was disappointing, but there are other places nearby, to switch up your meal and explore, after your amazing Guatemalan food. read more

One table that seats six, where strangers make room for one another and strike up conversations, sometimes in English but often on Spanish, over generous servings of delicious, fresh plates of lovingly prepared Guatemalan delights. You can choose streak, pork chops, chorizo, ribs, and chicken; even a Guatemalan meatloaf. All are paired with excellent versions of black or red beans, yellow rice and hand made tortillas. You watch them make the tortillas on the grill with a cast iron press. Watch it ride. The tacos are simply out of the country, maybe world. Quesadillas. Mmmm. The rice. Simple, amazing. I moved out of Phoenixville a year ago, I come back for this place. The only down side, is the smell is sooooo good that drive home is painful. Try it. Best tacos anywhere around. We had fish, chicken and pork tacos and they're really amazing! Hot, juicy, flavorful and so fresh. We went in to get takeout and it did take a little while, I'll call ahead next time, but so worth the wait. The fish taco was firm, fresh white fish that had been delicately spiced, topped with yummy salsa and fresh cheese. I tried a chicken taco and it was just as good, little bit sweet with a nice kick. BEST TACOS EVEERRRR!!! Ok, this just might be because we drove over an hour to see Halloween III at the Colonial Theater (5 stars) and we were starving but the tacos here are some of the best tacos I've had on the east coast. I ordered the chicken tacos for a quick bite before the movie and for $7 the three tacos had plenty of meat and so damn tinder with maybe a lack of spice being the only slight negative. The place is super tiny with a couple of two person "tables" but it's def just a to go kind of place with a full view of the kitchen right behind the counter. After ordering we waited outside for about 15 minutes and ate on a bench and honestly we though about going back for more to gorge ourselves.
