I was visiting family in the Pleasanton area and decided to drop-in for a few classes at Guerilla (Adult Fundamentals, Adult All Levels, and the Marathon Roll). The instructors, staff, and students were all incredibly welcoming and friendly. I especially enjoyed the positional sparring in the All Levels class, and I picked up some great tips on attacking/finishing the Anaconda and Darce. The Marathon Roll was a blast - solid/intense training, but everyone was looking out for each other and staying safe. My daughter started a couple of weeks before she turned three. Because her dad was a longtime student of Dave's, we always knew this would be our school. In three years, she has evolved into this confident, helpful person and I attribute some of this to BJJ. Her sensei always comments on how helpful she is to her peers, she's a patient partner and coach. Honestly, having older students help in class really modeled this behavior for her. I can see her helping to teach the younger kids when she's older. My son is four and has been practicing for a year and has also blossomed. Sensei Stephen is our favorite but we also love Senseis Nick, James, and Danny. Of course, it's always amazing to see Sensei Dave working with the smaller kids. I first came to Guerrilla Jujitsu to prepare for grappling competition back in 2009. It had been sometime since I had trained jujitsu but after meeting Dave Camarillo I knew I picked the right school. I went on to win gold as I was coached by a Guerrilla Jujitsu instructor. The presences of my coach helped me over come the emotion stress from the loss of my father two weeks prior. I went on to continue training but due to injuries sustained at work I had to stop. After healing up I ran into Dave Camarillo who encouraged me to return. But mentally at the time I just wasn't ready due to issues in my personal life. I actually regret not going back then. After looking around & visiting a few different places in the Tri-valley area. We let both kids try the free lesson. Although my son jumped right in, my daughter was a bit more reserved. ALL the instructors are very understanding, encouraging but not forceful to get her comfortable. We signed up both kids and after the 3rd/4th session my daughter was all in and it's been a great 2 months. Now they look forward to Jiu-Jitsu. My 4 year old daughter did Super Guerillas for a year. I felt it was good exercise for her and the teachers were friendly and professional. I would have rated it 4 stars but the front office staff was rude and unprofessional and is unfortunately the last impression I have of the business. We had continued problems throughout the year due to communication on their part. We did not receive emails of tournaments, etc that would effect our Saturday class and the staff made us feel that we were trying to get more out of them when we remade those classes. Upon ending our contract, I felt "nickel and dimed" when they tried to charge me for my daughter's belts. I am on auto pay and wasn't informed until after providing my cancellation letter that I needed to pay. I understand that equipment costs money but I need to be informed upfront rather than after the fact. The customer shouldn't be blamed for a business error or "revamping paperwork." Dave settled the matter quickly and professionally but he needs to hire new staff, one girl in particular, because they serve as the face of his business. read more

Several years ago, moving from LA to SF, I was looking for a good Jiu-Jitsu school. Erich Krauss, of Victory Belt Publishing, referred me to Dave; Unfortunately, he was only teaching at American Kick Boxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, and I wasn't able to work the commute from the Tri-valley. Thankfully, Dave started teaching in Pleasanton at VIP MMA, and training with his school the last several months has certainly been a pleasure. First and foremost, Dave is a world class Martial Artist, specializing in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. You may ask yourself, "what's the difference between Dave's school and/or my YMCA or a Craig List club?" Ultimately, Dave has been practicing since he was a child and trained and competed with some of the best in the world, all over the world. This is why you'll see him in the corner of professional fighters such as John Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Cain Valasquez, and many more--you see, they too are seeking world class instruction. However, don't let this intimidate you. Dave may train professional fighters, but he emphasizes calmness and technique, i.e., classes are not at a neck breaking physical intensity and arbitrarily exuberant pace. In fact, Dave regular reminds his students, "slow down" and "relax." Much like striking a nail head with a hammer, without technique one will end up with a swollen or, even worse, broken finger; Dave will use other similar analogies and metaphors during class--in the tradition of true martial arts. So expect not only to gain a good work out, but also a philosophy, art, and from time to time, comedy. In addition, the atmosphere is extremely friendly and dynamic, ranging from motivated first timers to advanced grapplers, including several students from AKA. My four year old son has been training in the youth class since it began over 6 months ago. I have seen a great improvement with his confidence around other (especially larger) children. Once intimidated and shy, he is now outgoing and a leader in his preschool class. Sensei Matt, Danny and Dave are amazing. They work well with children and have great patience. This is just a first stab. Was at the facility last weekend because they sponsor the Grand Prix BJJ tournament every year. Loved the location. The facility was moderate sized, but more importantly, they seemed serious about BJJ, without trying to be all things, to all people. didn't see any bicycle ergometers in the room:) On the weekends, you can use the elementarry school facity across the street for a track warm up, or pull-ups in the sun. read more

I've been training at this Gym for almost 3 months. I'm not up to speed with the Kids program, but I wish I could join an activity like this when I was a kid. They always have super fun and they're really good at Jiu Jitsu. They have two classes at the same time and there are many parents who take the adult class while their kids are doing their junior program. There are also seats for parents to observe the class. The Gym was started and is run daily by Dave Camarillo a famous UFC trainer. He has coached many champions. It's hard to find teachers with so much passion as him. He's a fly on the wall and pay attention to everything that goes on in the gym, especially the kids classes. As for the culture at Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu it's really unique. There is no 'beginners' class per say. From the first day you will train with higher belts. You're left to your own to ask someone on how to tie your own belt etc.. The techniques goes in a systematic rotation so you can start whenever you want. The process might seem a bit bewildering at first - however, Dave has been training Jiu Jitsu practitioners for over a decade and you'll get up to speed very fast.. Dave seem extremely structured in his approach to teaching. There is also no elitism or machos, and you're taken under the wing by the whole club when you join. Dave will notice you right away and start encouraging you during training. You will feel just as important as the higher belts running around, and everybody are super friendly and helpful. I regularly train with higher belts (brown, purple and blue) they always make me feel like a winner and that I performed well. They never 'crush you' because you are a newbie; the seniors spend a lot of time teaching and get you up to speed. I still haven't met anyone there I don't like. I find it to be an irony that the members are so helpful considering the art is about dominating someone else :-) But I wouldn't want it any other way... Finally, I need to add that the facilities are very clean and spacious! I'll give the club a 10/10 and encourage everybody to try out a class... especially if you have kids, send them there! read more

I decided to come here mainly because I heard they have a great kids program. We took a couple trial classes. We all loved it, and never looked back. We've been here for over a year now. The staff/instructors fosters a friendly atmosphere, and it shows with the students. My kids feel very comfortable in this environment, and have made some new friends because of it. read more

World class instruction, great atmosphere, and everyone is very friendly! What stands out for me at this school is the quality of instruction. Dave was out most of the time I was here (though it was a treat when he did teach), so Danny was our main instructor for our evening Jiu Jitsu classes. Danny is one of the best instructors I have ever met. He is extremely articulate and detailed, and he cares deeply for his students. During sparring / rolling, he will walk around to coach and cheer for the students. He makes sure the students' egos are in check and expects everyone to be courteous and respectful.
