My four children (ages 4 to 10) attended Darcio Lira Jujitsu for only a short time before we moved out of the area. We assumed we'd just start up at a new Jujitsu place, and we have realized now that Darlynson set the bar high - now everything else, as my kids say, is "too whimpy". Classes here start with military-type warm ups: running laps, planks, burpees, followed by learning technique and then rolling. Kids work HARD at Darcio Lira. They learn respect to Sensei and respect to their competitors. My kids left class dripping in sweat, and excited to come back and do it again. My sons, 5 and 7, have been going to Darcio Lira for about six months now. The eldest took part in his first tournament about 2 months ago. I can not express how happy I am with the entire curriculum and my boys enjoy the four times a week we have been attending. The physical nature of the training is demanding but fun and something my boys look forward to. The level of confidence that both of them have gained since starting their training is obvious to see and extends beyond BJJ itself. The place has very much of a family atmosphere and the idea of TEAM is highly stressed. The Sensei is strict and demands discipline but mixes it up very well with light hearted moments. My son found a friend through the window, the little boys mom was very friendly she answered tons of questions I had. Was meant to be. I had been wanting to sign my son up for something, he and I had settled on BJJ but I'd been crazy busy with work and I'd not done my part. I hadn't found/toured and facilities. It had been weighing heavy on my heart. Id mentioned we had tried karate in Pleasanton but I was unimpressed. She urged me to talk to Sensei. I was nervous to interrupt the class. She insisted. She was right. We belonged there. My son is 5 and very smart, he catches on quickly, gets bored easily and he needs to be challenged. He has a hard time staying focused Darcio Lira is the perfect place for his personality type. And they each bring different levels of experience/education/teaching styles, personality & energy. I train at Paul Silva Jiu Jitsu in San Diego, made a trip up north to visit an Army buddy, he trains at Darcio Lira Jiu Jitsu, the Professor is a great individual, very informative with little details, on defense when in any given move, as well as offense when in any given move, the students I trained were good people as well. I've been hunting for a Cardio Kickboxing class for a long time. I currently pay 20$ a month for the gym and could not justify paying the $120 most places were charging. They had a groupon for it so I bought it and it was one of the best decisions I've made. The class was amazing. There are all ages and boys and girls. And if you think your going to be sitting around punching air and that's what you want this class is not for you. This is by far the most intense and rewarding workout I've ever done. Darlynson truly wants you to do your best and he will push you when you need to be pushed. Don't get me wrong there are times you want to punch someone in the face cause you feel like dying but that's what the bag is for. I bought a groupon for cardio kickboxing at this studio and it was by far the best decision of my life. I am enrolling for monthly membership this month and I literally talk about this place ALL the time. I convinced one of my friends to do this with me and she is as obsessed as I am. Why? I have been pretty active my entire life, playing high level sports, running half marathons, Etc. But this class kicks my butt. I crawl out dying, in a good way. Have been attending the Boxing classes for a few months, and man I love it. It starts with the instructors who are all friendly, welcoming, and extremely professional. The gym is set up great, with a ton of bags and a legit full size ring. The head Boxing trainer Cornelius keeps the workouts intersting by mixing stuff up, but one thing never changes -YOUR GONNA WORK YOUR BUTT OFF. This is a real boxing gym where you can improve your skills regardless of your current level. A great bonus is you can attend some of the classes from the other disciplines too for no extra charge. read more

Good people but poor class management in terms of supervision for younger kids. Lot's of little ones with inappropriate unsupervised contact. Having another small child with a colored belt supervise 5-7 years olds going at it while the sensei walks around and socializes is not my idea of how a youth class should be run. I've done plenty of martial arts in my life..this is not me having unrealistic expectations..or an over protective parent...this is just common sense about the level of supervision young kids need in such a program or the level of pain small children should have to endure as they get exposed to marial arts. The sensei used my 7 year old as a class example and ended up wrenching my kids shoulder...which was very painful then, and ever since the shoulder keeps making weird popping noises... which we are going to have to get checked out for potential damage. The people are very nice. The art seems very useful for discipline and self defense....I just don't think this is the right dojo for young kids. read more

There are quite a few martial arts studios/gyms to choose from in the Livermore area so it took me a while to find a place that fit what I wanted, which is realistic self-defense combined with a good workout. I initially got in contact with Don Franks, and his street self-defense class fit what I wanted perfectly. All the instructors (Don, Darlynson and Angel) that I've taken classes with are very knowledgable, friendly and professional. And I don't notice any big egos in the gym. There's a real good positive atmosphere and environment there. The gym seems to be very diverse in that there's something for just about everyone - children, adults, male, female, casual attendees, beginners, and the more serious type fighters. To be honest, I can't really think of anything negative other than the fact that they charge you money to go there, lol. Just kidding, it's well worth it, trust me. read more

I love Darcio Lira. Everyone is so friendly and inviting. I love the variety of people (men and women) and classes they have. I go to the gi and no gi jiu jitsu class, and the cardio kickboxing class. I have been training here for almost 5 years and as a girl starting jiu jitsu i was a little nervous, but even on my first jiu jitsu class I felt like I already fit it with everyone. Not only is it a great workout but the trainer Darlynson Lira will work with you and challenging you to do better every class. I have had my child attending classes since 4yrs old but who is now 5 for approx 6 months so far...The program is good to build self confidence and to show children how to be independent and respect one another. Staff is extremely nice and you can be sure your child will learn jujitsu. The parents are very welcoming and are always nice. The pace of the class will be different if your child is younger and new, since they are still trying to get the fundamentals. It will seem as if they are not learning at a fast pace but trust me if you stick with it your child will become a stronger more confident individual. This is really good for a child who may need help to focus or a quiet child who needs more confidence. They give you a free try out class with no obligation so I would incourage you to let your child at least check it out.
