First off, as a gigging musician I have come here a lot over the past 10+ years. I also have experience going to a lot of other music stores and this particular store ranks up there in my top three in Austin. The people who have been leaving negative reviews here have some pretty unrealistic expectations in my opinions. Pretty much every time I remember coming in, all the employees treat me well whether I know them or not and they always do what the can to cut me a deal my telling me about a coupon I can use that I may have missed. The people who work there seem to understand that money can sometimes be tight for musicians and I feel they honestly do the best the can to get you what you need. The only thing I can think of is I wish their setups were cheaper but hey man, that's a chill that takes practice and the cost is par for the course in this town. read more

This review would have been 1 star but Chris, the Manger saved the day. I arrived at 11am with my 8 year old son to check out a Jackson pro series guitar ($1200 + -). I had a PRS ready for trade. Cade inspected my trade and we came to agreement on price. The Jackson was missing a whammy bar, the case, and had old rusted strings. I requested some complimentary strings which were provided. At check out I asked if he was able to locate the case and whammy bar, which he responded no. My response was, "may we discuss the cost of the new gear given this is an impartial order"? He said no and began to get visibly angry with me. I then asked to speak with the manager. He sad no, so I demanded that I speak with the manger. His response was "get the F*** out of my store, deal is off". All of this went down on front of my 8 year old son. I then walked to the back and met the manager. He located the whammy bar and provided a case, which I was very thankful for. Over the course of the last year I purchased a Line 6 Helix, Line 6 speaker and a PRS hollow body. The fact that he treated me and my son with such disrespect was shocking. I am amazed that this guy is even employed. He deserves to be fired and I hope that management at Guitar center reads this review and responds accordingly. read more

Lawsuit after lawsuit will come up because they conduct business in a very subversive and underhanded way. GC gift cards. Apparently, ​they don't always work online or in the store leaving you out in the cold and whoever bought you the gift card S.O.L. With gift cards, they already have the money, so customer service is very low when an issue happens. They think, "we already have the money, hahahahah... too bad so sad". This GC location specifically. I'm very tired of the "South Austin" aloof attitude their employees seem to wield​ with little effort. As someone who has been in the industry for over 30 years and knows more about the gear they're selling then all of their employees combined, I find it insulting when they mouth up at me or act as if​ they are better than everyone. I know they're just kids being kids, but the management​ should instill a better work ethic and culture across all GCs. read more

"Sunday, Sunday, Sunday it's Guitar Centers 32nd Annual Fourth Wednesday after the Full Moon Sale! Buy one pair of drum sticks get a Marshall Stack FREE!!" What can really beat a Guitar Center sale? Pretty much nothing, and if my sarcastic remark above wasn't obvious, they ALWAYS have a sale going on. Guitar Center (South) is located next to Office Depot and Target at the intersection of 290 and MOPAC. It is a crucial stop on the way into town for any touring band and a mandatory second home for any real musician in town. From crappy beginner guitars to vintage gear and high end pro audio they have it or they can get it. Whatever your musical little heart desires (except brass instruments) you can get from Guitar Center. I live and die by this store for all my gear, pro audio, lighting and studio needs. They always have some crazy sale going on, they always have a monthly sale catalog even further knocking the prices down. They can also cut you deals and work on prices with you if you are buying a bunch of stuff at one time. If you are a music industry professional or producer you can also skip paying sales tax by filling out one simple little sheet of paper. Guitar Center is quite the little Heaven on Earth and it is about a million times better than MusicMakers (they aren't even in the same league). For all your musical needs from beginner to pro, you will find your dream gear here. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and they will gladly help you out and guide you in the right direction (not like previously mentioned local store). I have come in here for the most random things and they have never steered me wrong or sent me home with the wrong item. Overall, this is an essential store for anyone who plays music, wants to play music or just wants to look cool. So I wanted to get a guitar to learn to play. I had two in mind, both pretty cheap but they got good reviews and I'm just a beginner. Well they were on the Guitar Center website, but not in the store. No big deal, just a little disappointing. I find an affordable one, although it is a little jacked up (apparently it was a more expensive model reduced in price), so I get a pretty sweet deal. The guys there were nice and seemed pretty knowledgeable. The guy helping me had been playing for 11 years or whatever. The store was pretty cool. Only problem I had was they tried to push some crap that is pretty unnecessary (I heard they get paid on commission now, so watch yourself). Overall, go check it out. They let you play the guitars without buying them too. Next I'm getting a drum set even if I don't have anywhere to put it, they just look so cool. read more

Other reviewers told you about what this store is and where it is. What I will tell you is the following: I bought a Yamaha digital piano from them. Not only did they have the good price I found at an online seller's website but they also were able to answer numerous questions about the device. One particular employee was able to provide great assistance during my two visits while I was trying to make a decision. She knew what she was talking about and was able to give great advice as to how to use this digital piano with other devices such as my computer etc. It turned out that the piano was out of stock at their location. They swiftly called the other stores and located one in the north store. They faxed the order to them and everything was done in a matter of minutes. I was very happy. My only complaint was with the north store that was supposed to put the piano on the next truck and deliver it to the south store in 3 days. This never happened and I had to go and pick it up from the north store. A small annoyance. I love my digital piano and I am glad I was able to buy it from a local business instead of sending my money of out state by buying it online. This store does not have everything but it has a pretty good selection of items and like the other reviewers said they always have some crazy promotion or sale going so to be safe pay frequent visits to keep an eye on the sales. read more

Worst music store on the planet. I honestly think they get the worst instruments from their vendors. I've seen some shady looking cuts of wood on high end guitars\Basses. I tend to think of GC as the WallMart of music retail, their sales staff is about as knowledgeable. Don't even think about getting any equipment serviced here, you've been warned. They will give you Pawn Shop rates on any trade in, DONT! Support local biz like South Austin, Ray's or Music Makers. Short, snappy version: Pros: relatively large store. Open 'til 8pm on weekdays, yay! Pretty new stuff in terms of gadgetry. Relatively friendly folk, but this could change at any time. Prices at least average, sometimes discounted. Cons: chain store often populated by people who either don't give a crap that you can't afford the Gibson 800000XG with pearl inlays and the Spinal Tap Deluxe Signature Model Amplifier rig, or don't actually KNOW anything about the stuff. If they're busy, you might be waiting a long time for assistance. Long version: I am a musician. I did not read the previous review. I have purchased lots of stupid-expensive gear, some of it from this place. I have shopped, ogled, been helped, been snubbed, waited patiently and also with foot tapping, been surprised, and dumbfounded in many, many, many, many, many, many music stores. So I'm here to tell ya, 4 stars for mega-chain Guitar Center is a fairly big deal. BUT - it is yet another instance of The Help From An Excellent Employee... much like your fave hair salon review, your fave multi-doctor's office.... it's the person working there, doing their job well, that really makes the difference. These days, you can get just about any product you want that Guitar Center sells either somewhere else physically, or online, and most likely cheaper if you do the online. So outside of touching said products, before you buy them and have them shipped to your house (which really is quite a good reason if you don't like dealing with shipping unnecessarily), what other reason is there to go into the store? If you are very lucky, you meet a guy like I did this time around at GC, who knows what he's talking about. This guy I'm referring to in particular, he knows his keyboard & synth stuff, because he uses it all the time himself. And he doesn't try to push crap on you that you don't want/can't afford to buy. I used to know a guy like this at Austin's locally owned MusicMakers, who was really dang cool - he used to let me basically try stuff at home for a week before I bought it! Anyway. That guy is gone now. [sob] Guitar Center is fairly big; they got a lotta stuff in there! And they keep up with the Joneses, pretty much, so you can see relatively new stuff when it comes out. They're not kings of band/orchestral instruments, or regular pianos, though they do have some of that stuff (hell the naME of the place is GUITAR center... us keyboard/electronic music guys are lucky they decided to cater to other music folks besides the axe-wielding clan). If you really want stuff like winds & strings, Strait Music is probably the place to go. Now, of course, the place like I said is called GUITAR Center. And yep, they got bunches and bunches of guitars. If you go to some of their landmark stores in bigger cities, they have even more guitars. In any case, there's a lot. If you can't at least find a guitar you like here (whether you can afford it or not) there is something not right with you. They even have a separate room for acoustic guitars so you can strum those guys in relative quiet while the rock and roll testing occurs on the main floor with the electrics and giant amps that go up to 11. Guitar Center of course has a ton of guitar accessory things, strings, picks, pedals, instructional stuff, videos, straps, whips, whipped cream. They also have pretty decent drum stuff, percussion toys, and also DJ gear & pro audio rooms. There ya go. My mailing and billing address on my Guitar Center account was put into the system incorrectly, therefore I didn't receive any consecutive bills for two months. Last month, I even went in to the store asking about those bills, which you cannot pay in store. I got the shrug, kinda, ''Keep looking for it in the mail.'' Thank God they got my phone number correctly. I received a call saying not only would they love a CC payment (I'd love to give one!), but I now owe them $$$ for late payment fees. For a mistake. That I did not make. That I tried to fix. Twice. Turns out you can pay these bills online (hurray!), which the women on the phone told me you...(you guessed it) could not do. The woman on the phone seemed reallllllllly confused by that one. It's an okay space, but I must admit I feel like Gilbert Grape walking into the new Supermarket! A little overwhelming to say the least. I usually run in there as fast as I can to pick up a gift for my fiancé. If I'm lucky someone spots my confused look and helps me out. Not making me feel real comfortable, but how annoying would it be for a girl not knowing crap about guitars be? I can guess they're not real excited to see people like me walking in or it might just be the uptight Austin vibe that some really "cool" Austinites tend to adopt. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE - Do NOT support this business! I walked in and was immediately greeted with stand-offish attitudes and atrocious customer service. I even caught the reps loudly talking s**t about me and my order I when asked if a representative could look over my online order before i left... "why tf would i go out of my way for a warehouse ukulele, if it buzzes it buzzes"... I immediately returned my item. I've been really pleased with my experiences at the Guitar Center. I, unlike the majority of Austin, don't play music. I don't know about instruments, I don't really care about new artists, don't seek out shows....I think you get the idea. Though I do have great respect for the art form, the 'music scene' is simply not my thing and never has been. Somehow, magically, that has meant I am married a musician. (facepalm) For his birthday I needed to pick out a specific kind of guitar that was stolen during a show a few years back. Long story short: I was able to find that guitar at the Guitar Center. The service was excellent and (to me) very knowledgable and they were able to absolutely exceed my expectations. Additionally, they were able to assist me with servicing a guitar he's had for years and it looks absolutely beautiful. We couldn't be more pleased. Walked in tonight with my guitar...I had broken the saddle when I tried to change the strings. I've never done that before and 'over tuned'. Mike Rivera was supposed to be done for the night, and just happened to still be at the store. He stayed and fixed my guitar, and re-strung it for me, cleaned it up a bit. Looks and sounds great. And he didn't charge me. I don't usually go to chain stores, but like someone else said...it is local folks working there. Mike was very generous with his time and talent and that counts for a lot with me. I don't buy a lot of stuff, but I'll go see them for music and other stuff I might need. read more

Guitar Center won't have it in stock, but they will order it for you in five days. Has nobody here heard of Amazon Prime ? Sure they have, if you wait for them to drop ship what you want in from their Timbuktu Store they will beat Amazon's price by 11 cents. Suck it Guitar Center. Though it's a chain, Guitar Center is a hit or miss. I like supporting local businesses. I prefer it. But I can't always afford it and sometimes they just don't have what you need, and ordering before trying can be a disaster with expensive stuff. In the case of the South Austin store, it can actually be a hit, depending on what you're going for. The guys in the guitar/amp department really aren't bad, the guys up front by the pedals and strings always seem to be really helpful and friendly. The keyboard/pro audio/software experience leaves a lot to be desired. Here's the department where guys sometimes make up answers, BS you about things that are easily refuted, and try to upsell you even on the most nonsensical stuff accessories. That doesn't go for the whole crew, but it does happen. At any rate, it's the best place to try out gear even if you don't want to buy it there, and the commissioned sales might make for a little pushiness at times, but you'll never want for attention. read more

-Best GC manager. -Guitar employees have little to no knowledge. An older man was buying his grandson and amp and guitar. The man asked him what amp to get the customer was really feeling a Fender amp, but the employee said no get your grandson a Vox amp "it makes fun sounds so he'll enjoy it." Customer was upset noticeably and just bought a guitar. The employee was acting like it was a you and because it was his grandson that the kid wouldn't be serious about playing. Very rude. -Pro Audio knows where to find their products, but will read you the info right off the box if you have questions. -Drums is the only knowledgeable department Louis I think is his name was very kind. Though another time going there the taller drum employee was rude and staying vacuuming and kept vacuuming when we had questions. Overall the manager saved the experience. read more

I like the new layout. Now you can help yourself to strings and other accessories instead of some dummy behind a counter who doesn't know where anything is. The problem is checking out once you have what you came for. There's a counter by the front door and one in the center. The one by the door apparently doesn't have a cash drawer which is neither here nor there because there's usually nobody at either one. It's taken me 30 minutes twice just to buy a set of strings. The drum department service is superb. The guys back there put up with a lot, but are always more than helpful. I can't believe they are that good when 90% of their visitors are just there to play around. Products are top and bottom of the spectrum. Some prices are really good. Others are list price or retail price. The guitar and bass departments are not as good. You get ignored a whole lot more in those departments. If the store didn't have their awesome drum department, I would give them 2 stars. read more

Solid store. Prices are always spot on. The employees are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Christian Scott, the Guitar Tech Guru, is amazing. He will give you honest, affordable advice. I brought in my 1957 Fender Music Master. Not really knowing what I had only that it was old, rare and in need of some TLC. He could have talked me into hundreds of dollars of upgrades and repairs, which I would have gladly paid, but he did the honest thing. He told me just to keep it as is. It's an awesome vintage guitar that is more valuable with original parts. I had him put on a set of strings and adjust the bridge. Hardly costed anything. I appreciate his honesty, professionalism and service. I've never had a bad visit to this store and will continue to come back. I'm a busy, serial entrepreneur and really don't have time for reviews like this. But sometimes you just get wowed and have to make the effort. read more

Really friendly, knowledgable staff. Brandon in the guitars department helped me find the right bass that fits the sound of my band. Didn't pressure me to make a purchase out of my price range, and gave me a range of alternatives within my budget. Definitely will be asking for brandon by name for future purchases. I don't leave a lot of reviews, but Darby is just a wonderful person and manager. Unfortunately I can't say the same about Guitar Center as a company. I sold them my guitar (1989 Custom Shop Fender) and they gave me preloaded debit cards as my form of payment. The cards did not work and I had to make several trips back to the store and finally just asked for my guitar back as they had given me money I could not spend. Darby handled the situation incredibly and was always so kind and respectful to both my dad and I during this time. I am absolutely outraged at Guitar Center and how they refused to handle the situation. Darby is an outstanding manager and should be promoted with his impeccable attitude and drive to please each and every customer. Guitar Center on the corporate level is just a joke. That's the nicest way I can put it. But the staff at this location is second to none. read more

I just bought a guitar today from the online store for $60. Picked up in the store and inquired regarding the setup which most of the people were mentioning. The guy who handed me the guitar quoted $50 for the setup. I asked if it is a fixed price for the setup or does it depend on the price of the guitar. He gave me a very rude look and never cared to listen anything and acted very irritated. I dont know anything about the guitar and wanted to learn. when i asked whether it was a good guitar he said you paid $60 and ask questions and it is like any other $60 guitar. Are we not supposed to buy $60 guitar, if yes then why do they even sell them. He was so rude that most of the time he gave 1 word answers. I will be returning this guitar and to hell with this pathetic disrespectful arrogant store. This is the worst experience i ever had in a store where we bought something. Sales manager "Mark" didn't even come close to the quote He gave me..... then goes into the spill of how all the other employees of guitar centers are stupid and don't know how to quote. Gee I think GC needs to realize what a "Gem" Mark is and make him president! I ask him to show me where He got his info last and it was on ebay on another snare not even in comparison. We bought a drum set for our teenage son who's been playing for years. The salesperson was very knowledgeable, and we got an amazing set for a price that was alright. We got out of there in about *3* hours (uggh), and I felt bad for our other 2 kids who do NOT play drums but had to wait (in agony) right along with us. I agree 100% with the previous review that said "get in, hold your breath, get what you need, and get out." right on. However, we're thrilled that they're hosting the drum-off!! read more

Ok, so I have bought a whole lot of stuff from GC over the years and the best advice I can give you is to "know what you want, and how much you want to pay for it, before you ever set foot in this place." At the very least, make a list from stuff you've researched online and want to check out. The more you know about gear, the more you'll realize most of these guys don't know jack squat about what they're selling. Try asking the salesperson questions that you already know the answers to, and you will be astounded at how often they will give you wrong information. The folks I've dealt with at the South GC for the most part have been friendly and not given me a lot of attitude, I'm sure they are great guys and gals. Just don't expect most of them to know how to tell you what is best for you. Knowledge is power. read more

Ok I've only been here once to buy a Yamaha Gigmaker starter set and I've got to say I was impressed by the wide selection of stuff at the store. I don't play guitar or keyboard but they had a smorgasbord of stuff here. Also the salesman was pretty helpful in comparing and contrasting different starting guitars for me. He also threw in a free extended warranty which could come in useful when I hurl the guitar across the room during the frustration of learning a new instrument. =) read more

Guitar Center used to be my favorite place to get into debt buying new gear. I have what they call GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome.) Because the North location is being turned into a 2 story Walmart and the last time I walked in there it was a complete zoo, I decided to pop in here. I have been here before and the manager the last time definitely went out of his way to replace a bass amp I bought that was outside of their return policy. This place always has free guitar picks in this plastic cup near the door too. It is a smaller location, so you are not going to find the selection the North store does. The north store is good because I have gotten to know some of the guys like Dice and El Fuego. I stopped in looking for little 6 inch patch cables. (I needed 3 of them.) I also was going to buy this Tuner/Chord computer for my brother for Christmas. I was helped by this guy who had no clue what he was doing. I asked him for patch cables. (Keep in mind they were sitting on the counter right in front of him.) He looked at me like I had asked him to solve the world's problems. I then had to prompt him by suggesting he look inside his computer to see what he had. He finally pointed out the over priced patch cables for $5.99 a pop. (They did have a lifetime warranty.) I then asked for the Chord computer they had in the lastest flyer. Now, if you work at a place I would hop you would have at least an idea of what is in the flyer. Once again, I get this blank stare. By this time, the manager of that department walks over. He turns to ask him about patch cables and a chord computer. The manager says, "Yeah, they are against the wall. That would have been great if I could find the patch cables against the wall. Of course the cables against the wall were only in 1 foot and 3 foot sections, not the 6 inch I needed and the 2 sets of the 6 inch ones they had were the same price as the ones on the counter. I pass on the cables and ask about the chord computer. The manager tells me that the chord computer really is not worth it, but shows it to me anyway. The manager then walks away from me. I leave the computer on the counter and start to walk away. When I noticed the original guy was leaving out the door, I turned to the manager and was like, "Gee, that guy had no clue what I was talking about since he was staring at me with a blank look." The manager responds, "He works in Amps. If you have an amp question, he can tell you anything you want to know about amps." I am sorry but I play guitar. I know about amps. I know about guitars. I know about accessories that go with guitars like patch cables. I even know what they have on sale in their flyer and I do not work at Guitar Center. I would have given this place a better review because I have gotten some decent service at this place. It has since gone way down hill. You have to almost beg for help. If I would have gotten better service, I probably would have bought more than just patch cables and chord computers. I am starting to see why these local music stores stay in business. Their prices may be higher buy the level of service you get from those places are better than Guitar Center. I might give this place another shot. The north store is closer to my work and I can hit up that place during lunch. I might just stick to ordering my gear through Musician's Friend and be done with Guitar Center. read more

I went to Guitar Center to pick up some cables, hoping to get some advice on how to rig up my home recording system for a podcast. There were about 4 customers in the whole store. I asked the guy behind the counter in the recording department a few questions since he was the only employee that made eye contact with me. He listened intently while he checked his texts, and then asked me to draw a picture of it for him while he disappeared. He expertly explained to me that he was kind of slammed with calls from the other store and that he wasn't supposed to be working there today. I walked away feeling like I had learned much. Went in to buy a ukulele. They have a rather large selection of ukes (I was only expecting like 2, but they had probably a good dozen or more varities and all were in plenty of stock) and I had a magnificent time talking to the guys about the different ones any why some were more expensive than others. Finally settled, probably to their dismay, on the cheapest one in the store, but it's so far been an awesome uke. I hear they even give lessons, so I might have to try that too.
