I love this place! Say what you will about Guitar Center as a corporation. The staff here are AWESOME! They have ALWAYS been tolerant of the individuals I serve that have developmental disabilities,the staff even have gone out of their way and played instruments for the individuals. Most of the time I am unable to afford to purchase anything, but I will make small purchases here and there, and in the over 2 years I have been bringing them here they have ALWAYS made us feel welcome, and comfortable to even play instruments for, and with the individuals I serve. How I wish to give a good review. I cannot! If there were any other shop of this magnitude, I'd have gone. I will not go back to GC - especially not this location. The amount of nonchalant attitude and outright rudeness is unbearable. They acted like they were doing me a favor by allowing me to buy from them. All they care about is hounding you in order to make commission otherwise you're ignored. I had $5000 to spend - I only bought one thing then just said "f it" I will not go back! Previously, I ordered products online from musicians friend. However, it's usually better to be able to personally try out instruments before buying and this was my first visit to a local musicians friend. The store had a nice "feel" to it when I walked in. I liked how the store was divided into sections, i.e. percussion in one dept, guitars in another, etc. The employees were friendly. Though they may not have a huge selection, there was a lot packed into the square footage they had. My reason for going was to buy an electronic drum set, specifically Roland. They had two Roland electronic kits setup, I tried both and decided on which I wanted. Next, were they amenable to negotiation? They were and I got the drums, throne and a nice kick pedal (DW 3000) for a reasonable price. The no interest for a year payment plan was the clincher. read more

I heard this place is going under and I see why. Can you imagine walking around a store with 2,000$ to spend and no one asking to help you? Well this is your place. This happens often there and I just leave and buy somewhere else. Also this the" not at this store" capitol of all music. Every inquiry about new innovative gear, their reply is we may have it in two weeks. Why go there? Musical ideas work way faster than they can or want to deliver on the gear. I was visiting Portland this week, and fortuitously happened upon an awesome used guitar I'd been searching for online for a while at the store. It was tagged around $1K, so I was reluctant to make an impulse buy, especially since I had to fly with it back to San Diego, CA. Long story short, Toby in guitars (expert on all stringed things as well as a Portland-area Music Retail vet) reminded me of GC's awesome layaway policy, as well as the fact that this particular guitar was tagged below market value, so it'd likely get picked up by someone else if I didn't go for it then and there. He wasn't wrong, so I put some $ down on it. Two days later, my trip schedule is such that I can't visit the store again before I fly out, so one of the store's Sales Leads (Assistant Managers), Levi, is able to orchestrate taking the remainder of the payment over the phone and shipping the guitar out for me in time for this weekend's wedding gig. ALL whilst displaying the utmost professionalism and courtesy. Love this store, love the crew. Well done, friends! read more

I shop at different GCs a lot. All over the country. They have the best prices and they consistently honor their low price guarantee. That said, I always know that I'm going to be dealing with a sales guy who acts way too friendly and calls me dude or man (or dude-man) and has a BS attitude that says "I'm your bro, bro!" At least they usually know their stuff. I came in here looking for a simple MIDI keyboard/controller to use at my hotel. I told the sales guy the brand I had previously had and asked if they had something similar. He showed me various things I didn't need and wasn't looking for. I repeated the brand/model I used to have, described it's functionality and asked again if they had something similar. No go. Finally I gave up and just said "I'm just gonna look around." It took me about two minutes to notice a stack of the exact brand/model I had been mentioning the whole time. I've been back twice since then and both times I've hung around for about 20 minutes and been completely ignored. Not going back. read more

Went in to trade a vintage guitar for a new one today and the older man behind the counter was carelessly wiping my guitar around like a wet towel almost hitting it on of the counter. I have bought a lot of stuff from GC in the past, but they will not see one more penny from me and I am going to tell every Portland musician I know about this incident and how careless and rude this salesperson was. read more

Every time I go into guitar center I am never disappointed! Today (May 15, 2019) I visited the Clackamas store. I Purchased the Roland Juno DS88, 2 monitors, bench, stand, and cables. I went in only to look around but found my way to the Roland... I was helped a majority of the time by Cameron. He was very helpful and answered all of my questions and he was very pleasant and courteous to work with. The store got a little busy so James stepped in to finish helping me. He too answered all of my questions, was very courteous and pleasant as well, both of these awesome and knowledgeable employees made my experience today just awesome and helped me feel confident in my purchase. It's one of the only guitar shops I visit in town...and I mainly visit only when certain employees are working because they're very helpful and friendly (such as Assistant Mgr. Jake Houck and Associate Jon Bailey...ask for either one). If you want some more "unique" or vintage guitars check out Centuar Guitar. Otherwise, GC has pretty much most things that a musician needs and the prices are pretty decent. I usually get annoyed by the amount of Metallic or Zepplin riffs being cranked too loud on amps here but that's part of shopping here. read more

As a regular customer ever since they opened, I feel like a have enough experiences to give a rating that is well balanced, based on average service rather than a single event. I shop mostly in drums, but I have also spent many a dollar in pro audio, basses, electric guitars, as well as keyboards. Over the years I'd say that the store management actually really cares about satisfying the customer as they know that their customer base is mostly composed of returning customers. Also, for a while, they had basically a local monopoly for any level of seriousness in the area. Now, with the flourishing of convenient (read free/fast shipping, and hassle free return policies) internet-based retailers, as well as local competitors (such as rhythm traders for drums), they know they have to work a little harder to earn that loyalty. I'll rate the company in three different areas I think must be separated in order for the review to be fair: Sales Staff (8 out of 10): This is the one that tends to vary. Sometimes I'll find reps that are impressively knowledgeable, mostly musicians themselves. Every once in a while, less experienced reps are found, but they are also usually aware of their own limitations and act humbly, and are quick to ask for help from their support staff if asked something they don't know. As a seasoned musician, I usually don't need any help from the reps, other than checking stock, doing a price match, or something administrative like that, which has never been a problem. Store Management (10 out 10): This is where Guitar Center shines for me. I've had some of the most memorable customer service experiences of any business with the folks in store management over the years. I have had people patiently listen to me whine, make exceptions to rules when called for, cut me insane price match deals, and worked tirelessly to right wrongs. In once sad instance, GC Corporate became involved and they gracefully stepped over everything and everyone and made things right for me. Store Itself (10 out of 10): The stores are highly stocked (most of the time whatever I need is available immediately and I get to walk home with it the same day). Everything is clearly organized and easy for the customer to access. Another very important thing is that they freely allow you to play ANY, and I mean ANY instrument in the store for a long as you need/want. I have banged on $5000 DW sets for hours without a single bad look. The North Portland store is particularly well setup to check out and play kits, as they have a separate room with closing doors. One more things, is that they are able to seamlessly coordinate with other local and non-local stores if the product you are looking for is out of stock at a specific store. Overall, Guitar Center has been an incredible resource to have in the area. I hope they continue to operate under the notion that they are here to serve the customer. GUITAR CENTER STAFF QUIZZ (for new hires in the drums dept). QUESTION: A customer rings several times and asks to try out a specific kit that is in stock, with a view to buying (the customer is traveling a long way to get to the store). What do you do? a. Don't bother getting the kit ready and remain ignorant of the fact that pieces are missing etc. (and yet remain pushy about selling once the kit is sort-of assembled)? b. Make sure you have the kit ready and are able to talk knowledgeably and objectively about the product...and others (without being pushy)...AND lower the price of the product to match an online competitor/sister company? If you answered (a), well done, you have a job at our Beaverton store. If you answered (b), well done, you have a job at our Clackamas store. RATING: Beaverton = 1 star Clackamas = 5 stars (and bonus points for throwing in a free pair of kids sticks for the customer's 5 year old daughter!) DO NOT BUY DRUMS AT THE BEAVERTON STORE! As a professional DJ who performs regularly across the west coast, I've gone to many guitar centers to buy equipment... I've found this location to be the best in terms of customer satisfaction. They've a great team over at pro audio who are willing to take extra time to help as & when needed. The store manager David is very hands-on & personable. They truly care & it shows. We walked in with only a limited amount of what we knew we were interested in. We got nothing but good info from all the staff and they were enthusiastic and seemed to really know their stuff. They were also very polite and very customer service oriented. Their prices are extremely reasonable. Lots of product out there that you can pick up and strum to your heart's delight. This review goes specifically to Lauren. She was so down to earth and gave me the best service I've ever had in a music store. I was looking to trade my guitar in and buy a new one budgeting myself at $200. I really appreciated her honesty when I was trying to find one, I almost ended up a cheap not very nice guitar, but then fell in love with a $300 Ibanez with her guidance. regardless of the fact that they were understaffed and pretty busy for a Wednesday morning, she gave me continuous help then ended up tracking down the guitar I wanted, used, for nearly half the price! I had an excellent customer service experience today in the Pro Audio department. I had difficulty using a keyboard with a certain music software. I thought it might be a problem with the keyboard, but the sales associate helped me solve the issue. He was patient, courteous, and wasn't overly aggressive in sales. I met the department manager as well and he was the same type of guy. I was pleased since I live closest to this Guitar Center and I'm sure I'll need something else in the near future. read more

Just went here to buy my first acoustic guitar. I stopped in several times to look at different ones and talk to the guys about my budget and what I could possibly afford. They answered all my questions and got me pretty stoked. I ended up going with a nice solid-top acoustic in the $400 range. The manager, David, helped schedule a setup with the guitar tech and made me a nice package deal with a hard case, strings, a capo, and the setup fee. They had my guitar done the next day and it sounded amazing. Really happy with the service and the deal. I'll be back! read more

I purchased my VOX VT+ amp from Guitar Center in Clackamas and very extremely impressed with the service, selection and price. They didn't pressure me, and allowed me to take the time to try several different amps before making my selection. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I give them a thumbs up. We were in the accessories department, and my friend was looking for a pedal to give him a certain sound. The sales associate Victoria helped us. I don't think I've ever met anyone with more knowledge about effects pedals and amplifiers! We were both totally impressed. Next time I buy a pedal, I'll go out of my way to go to this store, just to get Victoria's thoughts and opinions on whatever pedal I'm thinking about. I have been a loyal customer of this particular Guitar Center location for over 3 years. I have always been treated with courtesy and respect and that's why I have always come back to them whenever I need a new item or piece of gear for my set up. I estimate that I have spent about $4000.00 over the period of time that I have been going there to make my purchases. A few days ago, I went into the store with a piece of used equipment that I wanted to look into selling through their used gear program. I had called ahead to make sure that they would consider buying the particular item that I wanted to part with and was told to go ahead and bring it in to have an associate take a look at it so that they could give me a price estimate. When I walked into the pro audio section of the store, I didn't recognize a single face behind the counter! It had been almost a year since I had been into this location because I have been living out of state, but still, I wasn't expecting the entire staff to be different! I walked up to the only available associate "Adrienne" and told her that I was bringing a piece of gear in to potentially sell. She half grunted and asked me what type of equipment it was. I told her it was a Rane dj mixer and she puckered up her face and said in a stressed out voice "I don't think we even buy those from people!". I explained that I had called ahead and had been told that they did at which I received another sour face and she said she would go ask someone. I waited patiently while she took about ten minutes to return. "I guess I was wrong" she said as she opened the box that the mixer was in. The mixer was still in the box that it had come with, with all of the original packaging. She was very rough as she took the foam off of the ends and banged the mixer on the counter as she was unpacking it. Then she signed into the computer to check what the current market price was. Upon seeing the price, she whistled under her breath and glanced back at the mixer. She then complained to me that the edges of the mixer were too sharp and that it had taken some skin off of her finger while she was unpacking it. I couldn't help myself and said "Yeah, it's not crappy mixer. It's actually designed for professional use". "Well, I wouldn't know either way" she retorted with the same sour look on her face. I then explained to her that I had purchased the Rane TTM 57sl a year ago for $1600 and that it had only been used a handful of times and was in perfect condition. She then scurried off again to find someone who new more about this type of equipment. She returned to her station at the computer and started clicking and typing again. Then then started to tell me about some kind of chord chart application for her phone that she was stoked about that even had a pedal that you could install for turning the pages. I had to keep my jaw from dropping at this point. I was already having a horrible customer service experience and now this employee wanted to talk to me about her personal music endeavors that she obviously thought were far more interesting than the issue at hand. Finally the other associate came and took over. He clicked about on the computer for a few minutes and glanced at the mixer a few times while Adrienne scowled over his shoulder. He then informed me that he could offer me $420 for the mixer. I had to stop myself from laughing in his face. I explained to him that there was no way that I wanted to sell something that was worth at least $1000 - $1200 for $420. He explained to me that they offer customers 60% of the price that they think that they can resell the piece of equipment for and that he thought that they could sell it for $800. The numbers that he gave me didn't exactly match up to the 60% but at that point I didn't even have the patience to argue with him. I just wanted to get out of there before I said anything rude. I won't ever go back to this Guitar Center location again. The staff seemed totally unengaged and lacking in basic knowledge that should be required to work on the sales floor at such an establishment. I was planning on using any funds that I received from selling the piece of equipment to purchase another item of greater value from them, but after that experience, I will be taking my business somewhere else. There is nothing worse than being treated like a rookie when you are an honest and educated person who is looking to do business in a respectful and straightforward manner. read more

I went in to purchase guitar strings. I asked the clerk behind the string/accessory counter about which strings might last longer (since I have been breaking them). The person recommended some DR strings, which were much more expensive than the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings I usually use. He told me they feel better, and last longer. I took them home, and put them on my guitar. I played for about an hour; the entire time, the strings refused to stay in tune, and my playing was cut short when my BRAND NEW STRINGS BROKE. I am furious. They do not hire knowledgeable personell, and that caused me to throw money away. Do everybody a favor, and support independent/local music stores. read more

I usually love guitar center and had a 1000$ to spend on Dj gear tonight and I ended up leaving because the kid that worked in the DJ section was super snooty and did not want to help me at all when I had a question about a piece of gear. He looked at me like I was crazy and like I was a huge inconvience to ask him a question and totally dismissed me. Then I heard him complaining super loud to another person that he cant believe soooooo many people had to come in at 8:30 tonight. Im not one to ever write a bad review but I am sick and tired of this terrible customer service that snotty hippster bad attitude people are doing in the northwest. No person should ever treat or respond to a person so badly, especially when its your job to help someone. If you are having a bad day, then you should stay home and not take it to work. Inspired by seeing his older brother play at church, my son talked us into taking him to GC-Clackamas Memorial Day Weekend "just to look" at some electric guitars. As soon as we stepped into the store my husband went MIA for a good half hour just checking out the DJ equipment. The rest of us quickly dispersed into the other specialized departments and studios so the layout of the store and having a greeter at the only exit made for a stress-free shopping experience. But the main reason I am taking time to write this review is to praise the staff at GC-Clackamas, especially Reed and another associate (Shawn?). Reed was my 'Guitar Hero' by helping me set up my account online and even going so far as to make a customer service call for me while I stood beside him. He was so patient and never got frustrated despite the many hoops and hurdles we encountered during the process (not related to Guitar Center) and you would never know from these guys that they were minutes away from closing time as our "just to look" visit turned into a successful purchase of an excellent guitar and amp package for my son that day. I cannot tell you how happy and grateful I am for Reed's time and assistance in making it possible. He went over and above what would be expected from a store associate. And what really had me jumping for joy as I left GC was the gracious gesture by another Store Associate (Shawn?) who stepped in and assisted us when we realized we had forgotten to add a guitar stand to our purchase. So many reasons we all left very happy campers after my first Guitar Center experience. Thanks again, guys! read more
