Back In 10 Mins on a half open door with a closed sign next to it.

Oh man. This place is the worst. This is one of those businesses that are all to common in Portland comprised of people who don't want to handle business but instead just want to hang out and occasionally transact things if the conditions are ideal. Full Disclosure: This review is about a year old. I've just been busy and just stumbled across my notes. At the time of my transaction, I was booking DJs and handling the DJ gear at a place which had DJs on Thursday - Saturday nights. I needed a place that could tune up the turntables between Sunday and Thursday day. I got this place's info from a guy at Super Digital in NW. I was so unhappy with their service, I won't even go to Super Digital again. I call Portland Pro Audio and explain my situation and deadline. They tell me it's no problem. Saturday night after my gig I grab the turntables and head down first thing Sunday. Not only does this place not have a sign outside, they had a "closed" sign in the window. Off to a great start. Despite assuring me they could complete the work in the time I had available on the phone, when I got there, they weren't sure if they could do it. He told me he had a bunch of other orders but none of those orders had a deadline. (Ok, so since mine does, can we knock it out?) The guy checking me in asked if I had a needle to test the turntables when they were done. WHAT KIND OF SHOP THAT REPAIRS TURNTABLES DOESN'T HAVE A NEEDLE?! Most shops tell you to take all accessories so they're not responsible but this guy thought that was ludicrous. I can't remember his name but he had curly scraggly hair, a Jackson Browne shirt and looked like he definitely listened to vinyl and had a needle laying around. 2 days later on Tuesday, I stop down to drop off a needle. The turntables have not moved from the counter where I set them. I ask how it's going. The guy in charge (older) tells me he hopes they can get them done in time but might have to charge me a rush fee. YOU HAVEN'T EVEN LOOKED AT THEM YET, THEY HAVEN'T MOVED! I explain that we didn't discuss that and I give him the needle and tell him he can keep it. He tells me he won't need to keep it. I insist, since he doesn't have one on hand and I'm sure I'm not the first customer with the "no needle" problem. They call me Thursday to tell me the turntables are done and make it sound like they really moved heaven and Earth to make it happen. I ask him for a total so I can get a check from my work to pay and the guy tells me "I hate banks. You don't have cash." The warm fuzzies never end. I pick them up and the guy tries to hand me the needle again. I explain, again, that he can keep it because THEY OBVIOUSLY NEED IT and I walk away. Lo and behold one of the turntables isn't working right! The 45 / 33 button is broken. I call and explain this and the guy tells me THEY DON'T TEST ANYTHING BEFORE IT GOES OUT. I'm not making this up. Again on a Sunday, I take the turntable down. The sign on the front says "Closed", the door says "Back in 10 Mins" but it's half open. Super clear messages guys. Later that week I pick the turntable back up and thankfully it works. At no point in this entire process did anyone exhibit any sense of urgency, interest in customer service or even just general "I care about anything". It seems like 2 guys who thought it would be cool to have a shop where they fix audio gear. I'll send my gear out of state before I use these clowns again.

We've all had our bad experiences with instrument repair, not many things can be so frustrating and demoralizing, which is why I've stuck with Mike and followed him through his many stops. He takes extra care to make sure I'm happy with the work, from explaining what I'll need upfront, to minor tweaks to suit my needs before the guitar leaves the shop. He even helped me figure out a few songs my cement fingers were having trouble with. I am fully confident in recommending Sound Service to you.

California's loss, our gain! I decided to give him a call after reading the stellar reviews. They do not exaggerate. My guitar needed a set up and had the dreaded fret buzz. He responds right away and communicates every step of the way. His turn around time is fast! I didn't have to be parted from my guitar for even a week. Most other places are backed up and take at least 2 weeks before they can get to your instrument. He really knows his stuff, all the ins and outs, not just on guitars but also on recording music. I will definitely use him again. Don't hesitate to contact Mike. I definitely feel like we've found THE guy for our gear.

I can't comprehend how there aren't more bad reviews, considering a friend of mine who works at a local guitar shop told me I should have avoided this place like the plague, and that I'm not alone in my experience. I've really tried not to get to this point that I have to trash this business, but its been three months since I dropped off my amp, and I still haven't gotten a straight answer on whether it can even be fixed. I dropped off a Fender Rumble 200 with a bad pre-amp circuit board with them in December on a Sunday, after he made me wait outside for 10 minutes in the cold. Inside the shop was a haphazard mess, resembling what you might imagine seeing on an episode of hoarders, but for guitar amps. My interaction with the repair guy was pretty awkward. I'm awkward too so its whatever. He told me he had a spare circuit board from a Fender Rumble 500 in stock that would fit my amp, and that it would take him just a few hours labor to run a trace and swap out the board. For some reason, I interpreted that as I would pick up the amp later that day. When I hadn't heard from them near closing time, I called. Later I would learn it was shocking he answered on the first try. He told me he hadn't even looked at the amp yet, but he would get to it next week. Next week rolled past and no call. I waited patiently for another week, and then called them several times, and most of the time he never answered. I left voice mails but they were never returned. When I did get him on the phone, he mumbled something about being totally swamped, but he would look at the amp and call me back tomorrow. He never did. Fast forward two months, I call him, he answers, and to my surprise he has some news. The trace on the amp showed one of the other boards needed to be replaced too, but the repair would probably be more expensive that I was willing to spend. Otherwise, he probably had one of those boards in stock too, but he'll need to do further testing, if I was really committed to fix it. I informed him I only paid $100 for the amp, and that I am willing to put several hundred more into the repair, considering a new Fender Rumble 200 costs around $600. He told me he would look further into it and get back to me. Its now March, and I haven't heard anything. Periodically when I happen to remember I even own the amp, I call and they don't answer. So, I give up. I only wanted this extra bass amp for my band mate who has been coming over to my tiny office to jam for the past three months, while our drummer was on an overseas trip. Our drummer returned, and we're back in the studio with our big boy amps. I have no need for a practice amp anymore. Arcane Amplifiers, if you're reading this, go ahead and keep my amp. Its my understanding that its incredibly difficult to find replacement parts for a Fender Rumble, and most repair places won't even consider fixing them. Maybe the parts of my amp might help some other poor soul who gets duped into buying a broken one like I did. I'll just consider it a lesson learned, and in return for your services, I'm leaving you this review. Have a nice day.
