We went in to buy a djembe. The clerk was friendly and helpful. When we checked out, she said we had a two year warranty; we thought that was great until we reviewed the receipt and saw we were charged $28.99 for the warranty. It seemed a little sleazy, but we do love the djembe. read more

This place has really gone downhill. I have purchased a few different guitars here and had a fair amount of maintenance done over the years. The staff used to be very helpful and cool to talk to. Unfortunately, things seem to have changed in the past couple of years and the atmosphere is completely different. I think they've had a lot of turnover, which I'm sure has a lot to do with it. Every time I visit this store now, I am unable to get any service. It seems like there are maybe 2-3 staff present at any time, but they're always too preoccupied to look up from their workstation or are too busy chatting. Last time we waited around for 20 minutes and gave up, which really sucks because I have been trying to find a guitar locally instead of taking a gamble on something sight-unseen. It seems that there aren't really any good places to buy higher-end gear in this area anymore without having to shop online and ship. read more

Maybe it's because of the labor shortage from the pandemic, but the last two times I've been to the Eugene Guitar Center, it felt almost like a ghost town. There were maybe 3 people working. No music playing over the PA, the drum department was a mess and unstaffed (even behind the counter), and their online inventory isn't accurate. I came in yesterday to buy a drum tuner that showed "in stock" on their website; and while the associate was very helpful in trying to find it, he eventually came back saying the last time it was counted in inventory was 6 months ago, and it was no longer there. It's sad. This place used to be the spot where you could find just about anything you needed, but now it looks and feels barely managed. read more

I am new to piano. As a beginner I was looking for a good entry level electric piano. I had no idea where to start and was also on a budget. I did a lot of research online and decided it would be best to go somewhere in person. Boy am I glad I did! I was helped by an employee named Joe who was beyond patient and knowledgeable with my many, many questions. He is a musician himself and you can tell how passionate he is about instruments and helping others on their musical journey. He helped me pick out a Yamaha P45. I couldn't be happier. Such a quality keyboard for a very reasonable price. This is a great starter instrument. I am getting much use out of it. I will definitely be back to Guitar Center. I went in to look at electronic drums. Walked in, went to the drum room. I sat down at an electronic drum set, read a placard, moved over to another set. The employee in the drum room was intent on making sure the drumheads were properly stocked. Never acknowledged my existence, either when I went in the room or came out. The only acknowledgment from any employee was on my way out when one of the employees said, "Have a good night, sir". I've had better customer service at The Home Depot. Poor experience. read more

I needed to get my guitar restrung. I was the first person in line at the repair station. I got helped by a man named Wade. He told me it would take about 25 minutes. It ended up taking close to an hour. He helped multiple people during the time he was supposed to be stringing my guitar which was rude because he didn't seem to care about my time. He didn't make me feel valued as a customer and he didn't value my time. He stops doing his job to help other people and makes you feel like you don't matter. read more

I rarely purchase from this store because every time I need some equipment in a pinch, the service is awful. You will have to wait for an extended amount of time to get help from someone, even if the store is practically empty. When you finally reach someone they will reply with sarcasm and pretentiousness. OK; could be so much better Maybe it's because Guitar Center is a chain, and there's a tendency for all GC's to be kind of the same, but this is a store with a lot of potential which it unfortunately doesn't always live up to. I've been a guitar player for well over 30 years, and have a houseful of instruments, which consequently need strings, maintenance, and other supports. After a number of disappointments, I find GC has become the place I visit only in an emergency, when all other possibilities are unavailable. Strings are a case in point. I use very specific custom sets on most of my instruments, that I assemble from singles of the appropriate style and gauges. Turns out that GC's selection of single strings is, well, pathetic. On any given day I've got a wider variety in the string drawer in my living room than you're likely to find at GC. If you're OK with preselected sets, they have a fair range to choose from. But if you need anything custom and live in Eugene, you're going to have to shop on-line. There's a good range of electric guitars at various price points. Acoustic instrument variety has, however, greatly decreased over the past several years. Most of the acoustics fall in the low end -- $100-$250 -- then there's a jump to $3000 Taylors. Good solid mid-range instruments are almost entirely lacking. Also, very few classical guitars to be seen, and most of those low end. Twelve strings are rare. All in all, my current impression of GC acoustic room is "generic". They have their pluses: service is usually friendly -- although it's varied all the way from "hard-to-locate", to "intrusive" at times. They do occasionally have good deals on used, refurbed amps, and it's the only place in town to buy decent audio cables. A fairly limited selection of effects, parts, and books rounds out what has essentially become the "McDonald's" of guitar shops: reliable, generic, middle-of-the road. It's a pity, because they have the space and the staff knowledge to be so much more. Of course, maybe that's the way corporate central wants it. Oh well. read more

I just dropped $2800 on a in-home karaoke and stereo system. I am not an expert in speakers, microphones, cables, mixing boards and all of the things needed to put together a system such as this. I went to the guitar center because it was recommended by a friend. The quality of the equipment is excellent. I had high expectations for the knowledge of the staff, that they could guide me through this process of purchase and installation. This is where the train left the tracks. I was supposedly working with a manager but as I learned more about how their personnel system works I think it was a rouse... I don't think he was a manager at all because he missed so many details that he should have known about. I expected that they would know more about the components that they sell. That they would know that I would need certain cables and plugs because of the equipment they're selling me... I expected them to attempt to be more engagedin how I intend on installing the system so that they could recommend the items I need. It's like going to Best Buy and buying a new TV and the sales person didn't bother recommending an a DVD player, HDMI cable and anything else that you might need for the television like a stand, a wall mount, sound bar, fiber optic cable etc. Sell and walk mentality. In the end, I was left feeling that they really just wanted to sell components and make a commission. The person I worked with missed so many details from insuring that I had the right cables, to conversion plugs, to speaker stands... I wasted a lot of money on cabling I didn't need.... and I wasted two or three trips to the guitar center to try to figure out the cabling. Im still not done but unfortunately I don't know of anywhere else in town I can buy these things from. This is probably a great place for a skilled musician to purchase equipment. This is not a very good place for an amateur, like myself, to buy equipment. If I were to lower my expectations then I might as well buy online (or Fred Meyer's) because those staff members probably have as much knowledge as the staff at the guitar center. read more

I just wanted to recognize Gillian, the operations manager, for a stellar job in keeping me updated daily on my lost Christmas gift! I ordered an Ibanez SR505 for my fiancé and I was devistated when I found out UPS had "completely lost" his bass (shocker :::eyeroll:::). That is a gift I know he's going to love. She absolutely rocked customer service and kept me calm with her cool-as-a-cucumber attitude. We need more people in the customer service industry like this! Also- I'm in MA and am so happy I got to find a used one in great condition. I had trouble finding anything of that quality in my price range. I recently purchasEd a bass guitar, 3 year service coverage, case, strap, and picks online and had them sent to this store. When I went to pick them up I also purchased new strings, a patch cord, and a guitar stand. The stand I purchased was the Ultimate Support stand GS-1000 Pro+ advised by the associate. A few days after I purchased the stand I set my bass on it and the back leg snapped off, dropping my new bass to the ground. Luckily there was no damage to the bass. I took the broken stand to the store to exchange it and was told by the manager that they are unable to return the item as it is broken. I asked for the regional manager and she stated she would reach out and call me back. The manager later called me and let me know that they are unable to return the item. Guitar Center's policy when they sell you defective equipment is GO FUCK YOURSELF! I will never do business with them again and will advise everyone I know to do the same. I'm out $55 dollars and have nothing but a broken guitar stand to show for it! read more

On December 4th, 2010 I walked into the Guitar Center in Eugene Oregon for the last time...Here's the story: I'm a tall male with long hair in my late twenties, Caucasian and cleanly dressed. I say this because I experienced discrimination from the men working at the front counter that evening. I was told that I must remove my backpack to enter the store. Seems fair right? I had a very small backpack hung over both shoulders, and inside were my medications. I won't go into the details but I need them with me. Here's what really got me. The store was busy and as I was being ordered to remove my backpack (let's call it my man-purse) but a stream of women were walking through the door. The first with a backpack on one shoulder, then another two with the voluminous purses some women cherish, and then another woman with a backpack. GET IT TOGETHER GUITAR CENTER!!! I have always accepted that this store can't provide the same level of customer service as local Mom and Pop stores like McKenzie River Music or any of the great shops in Corvallis, but COME ON! I'm a Professional Musician and this was UNACCEPTABLE. The young men at the counter may have just been following orders...like, bother the men but not the women, or maybe they just had bad attitudes and wanted to exercise some control. And here's a word of advise for those mothers and fathers trying to support their budding artist: The best investment you can make in your child is a relationship with a competent instructor who can keep them challenged and inspired. What makes great artists great are the thousands of hours they have spent with their craft...it's less important that they have every book, gizmo, gadget and brand new instrument. Really. The craft of musicianship has so much to do with relationships...This is where the guitar center fails and the smaller shops excel. I selected an acoustic guitar which had a $199 price tag, and which was rung up at $279. When I returned to the store to point this out, the counter guy was lost in space, unable to locate a price tag from a transaction three minutes prior. Additionally, during the sale, he stated that he would charge me $30 for a two-year warranty, and then proceeded to charge me $60. I just called to get price on a Rickenbacker 4003 bass guitar because website tells you to call for price. Took forever for someone to answer phone. I asked how much he could get me one for, employee said he can't tell me because he's super busy. I let him know I want to buy now he said too bad I'm too busy to help you and if I want to stay on hold for 15 minutes or so I'll get back to you when I can. I said look I'm ready to buy now and he hung up on me. Kinda funny because I've spent thousands of dollars at this Guitar Center in Eugene, Oregon. Last few times I've come into this store the service has been sub- par. I will never set foot in this store. I've been a professional touring musician for over 30 years and this had served me well until the last several years, sales associates don't know half of what their talking about and are rude. I personally don't think it will be long before the Eugene, Oregon Guitar Center closes its doors if they keep employing rude , inconsiderate people who don't treat long term customers like this. You DONT hang up on customers just because you think your overwhelmed. I hope people stop using this store, I know I'm done after all these years. So, I've always wanted to learn to play the guitar, but it's just been one of those things that sits there off to the side of your mind, lurking in the shadows and really only making itself noticed when you are confronted with someone else that can actually play, to which you invariably always say, "Yeah, guitar... I've always wanted to learn to play..." before pushing the thought back to where you can't really notice it. Somehow I have managed to overcome this imposing impasse - yes, I am in the process of buying a guitar! How absolutely exciting, right? Enter Guitar Center. I knew about this store from a friend who recommended it, from it's website and also from passing it often in my car. Aside from a ridiculous amount of compact car parking slots (read: dozens), it is in a typical strip mall setup. The store itself is rather small - there isn't much room to stretch out - but it is literally lined to the ceiling with guitars and other instruments and equipment. My friend and I were quickly found by an employee who started us in the right direction but went to go find somebody who could help us better, since neither of us knew anything about guitars. Donnie was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I had walked into the store intending to say, "Hey, I want a guitar," be shown some guitars, probably told some differences between them, and then buy one and be on my way. Well, 90 minutes later I can tell you what humbuckers and single-coil pickups are, which types of music Les Pauls, Stratocasters and Telecasters are preferred for, how guitars are made, and what type of woods make which sorts of sounds, among other things. All in all, it was a very good experience. I didn't actually buy a guitar because I was convinced to come back another time and actually play a few before making a decision. Although I admittedly have no idea how the prices stand up against other stores, when I went most guitar prices were slashed by considerable amounts (say, from $600 down to $400). I used to not think much of Guitar Center, it was the big box store that came in and put all the cool boutique guitar shops out of business. I've had to shop there a few times in other cities, sometimes they were the only place to get something for an upcoming gig. Never enjoyed it. Eugene Guitar Center has changed my mind, as has shopping with their gear card. Every time I shop at Guitar Center now, somebody tries to save me money, really tries, can't complain about that. Have also had a couple of good set ups for my guitars there (big surprise), some of their techs are actually the same guys I went to privately here in Eugene, solid techs. Twice now I have used bonus points from my Gear Card to get free guitar cases. I don't even know how I accumulated so many points, I don't buy a ton of gear. Shop online, pick up in store works great too, and the staff is always super helpful in finding and delivering my new gear. When I worried that they would miss out on a commission, they assured me it was okay. Some people complain that no one helped them, I like their staff's non-aggressive style personally, and have always been helped when I really needed it. I used to be loyal to another big online music gear company, but Guitar Center has earned my business by offering me great deals, the best no-questions asked return policy in the business, free gear and bonus points and the cool people that work in the Eugene Store. I walked in to Guitar Center today with $600 in my wallet to buy a guitar and possibly an amp. Two males walked in front of me, the greeter say hello to them and asked them if he could direct them anywhere. He made eye contact with me and didn't say a word to me. I looked around the display floor at both the amps and guitars. The salemen asked any males who were looking around if they needed help. Said nothing to me. I made eye contact with all of them. I decided to go elsewhere after failing to get any of their attention. I did see some manuscript paper I told a friend I would pick up for her. So I went to the accessory section to pay for it. There were three young males behind the counter who all made eye contact with me several times in the ten minutes I waited. One only spoke to me after the customer in front of me spoke to me and I said I will probably be there a while since no one could be bothered to even speak to me. One of them acknowledged me by saying "This is my third day I am just logging in." Apparently, the computer and his vocal chords are connected. WOW.... When I finally did get to check out, he seemed annoyed I was there at all. I laid a $20 bill on top of the manuscript notebook, he tossed it aside and scanned in the notebook, then said "What was your name?" Well, I didn't tell him my name so I said. "I didn't tell you my name." He gets an attitude with me again and says in an annoyed tone "I know that is why I said What was your name?" Yea, "WAS" is only used if you were previously introduced. So at this point I just assume he is trying to ask me what my name is for the computer, and being completely socially awkward about it. Crap customer service. I then say, "You don't need my name to buy this, do you?" He sighs and cops a crap attitude again. "Apparently NOT." then pounds away at the keyboard, and acts like I am making his life hell for wanting to purchase something at the store he works at. Then I mistakenly over hear the guy behind the counter of the used guitar pedals say they have used pedals. So I finish my transaction to go over and maybe spend some money with him since he is so chatty with the guy who just left his counter. Looks me the eye and doesn't say a damn word. Nothing. I felt like I was transported back in time to some crap 1950's little boys club. I thought because I saw them sponsoring GRRRLZ ROCK events I would not have to deal with this crap. Clearly I was wrong. Don't go to Guitar Center. Order online or go to Mackenzie River Music. Any place, but there. They do not deserve any business from this community. read more

Guitar has really went down hill I purchased a new Jackson well it was supposed to be new and unboxed when it finally arrived it was a used guitar that never been cleaned and no paper work from Jackson and the box was damaged and retapped with random trash inside and I was told it was because it sat in the warehouse for awhile I couldn't believe that they were still trying to say it was brand new. First time in there. Poor customer service. I am a musician, play two different instruments (not guitar), have a degree in music, been playing for over 30 years and teaching music lessons for over 20. I took my 15 year old daughter in there because she was interested in getting an acoustic guitar. It was not busy, 4 guys standing around chatting. We spent a good half hour in the climate controlled acoustic guitar room and not one sales associate came in to see if we needed any help. We spent some time looking at some of the percussion instruments, and none of the guys in that area approached us either. We then spent another 10 minutes looking at sheet music etc. on the main floor. Once again, not one person approached us or when we were studying the guitar display right inside the front door. AS we were leaving, it was "Thanks for coming in." WHAT?! I will not return there. Will either purchase elsewhere in town or order online. read more
