DO NOT take your instrument here for setups…read more I visited Musicians Woodshed last week and initially spoke with one of the guitar techs, Jett Boyd, who was polite and professional. We discussed my bass guitar and the possibility that some frets might need adjustment. When I returned the following week after noticing some fret buzz, I spoke with Miles Manglos. I explained that I prefer a very straight neck with low action and that I was not interested in adding more relief to the neck. Because of that, the logical solution would have been to address the fret work. Instead, he suggested doing a setup that would involve adding relief and raising the action--the exact opposite of what I had just explained I wanted. When I asked whether that meant adding neck relief and how that would affect the current setup, he couldn't clearly explain it. I also mentioned that at a different shop in another city, a tech had previously performed a setup even though I specifically asked him not to and only wanted the jack repaired. I brought this up simply to explain why I was trying to be very clear about the work I wanted done. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, Miles abruptly declined to work on the instrument and told me to leave. He was dismissive and repeatedly said he didn't understand what I was saying. A competent guitar tech or luthier should be able to translate what a musician is describing and communicate clearly about the work being recommended. If a shop cannot or does not want to perform a certain service, that's fine--but it should be handled respectfully and professionally. Unfortunately, this interaction came across as pretentious and unhelpful, and it left a very negative impression of the shop.

I have never joined a music school before. My teacher at the music school was an incredible mentor. The music school is in the process of soundproofing some of their rooms, and the instructors schedule students back-to-back (which I'm aware is common). I voiced some frustrations when hearing a vocalist overpower the sound in my lesson. I expressed that it was difficult to focus as both me and my instructor were frustrated. I voiced frustrations about losing minutes when students are scheduled back-to-back. I have had minimal encounters with the owner, Alex, but my first impression of him was disappointing as he announced names at the recitals and completely butchered my name, calling me someone else. He responded to my email explaining that there will always be sounds in each room, which I can understand, and offered to speak with the instructor. In return, I asked him to allow for the person before me to have more time to transition out (built into her own lesson). She is new and her parents wanted a summary of the lesson at the end of each lesson. This somehow translated to him that I wanted him to change his entire business model and allow five minute breaks after each student. His solution was to cut my lesson time instead, which when asking for support on how to maximize my own time, felt like a slap in the face. When he asked me if that worked for me, I said no. His response was this: "Ok well. I'm not going to change my business model for you. I offered a compromise and you declined. At this point I think it's best to discontinue your lessons at Eastside Music School. I haven't charged you for May tuition. I won't charge you for yesterday to make up for all the time you didn't receive that you paid for. And I'll take you off the calendar moving forward. Best of luck to you." I immediately went to the music school to speak with him and his response was explaining that he had 300 students and 25 teachers and will not make any accommodations for me. His also stated that my instructor will be gone for two months anyway. As a person in a leadership role, mentoring students to be the best they can be, teaching others the importance of feedback, accountability, and compassion, I am so disappointed with my experience at Eastside Music. In his second response, he dismissed me, minimized my experience, and told me I'm the type of person who would be benefit from private lessons. Despite the mission statement "Find Your Voice," If you chose this school, do not voice any concerns or feedback to the owner unless you have a back up plan for lessons. Talk to the instructor directly. When I approached this, my intent was to feel heard and resolve a conflict that many students are experiencing, which at the time seemed like a simple fix. He took the opportunity to be a leader and mentor of one student that is enrolled at his school to learn and grow...1 of 300 he made clear.. to prioritize his own arrogance and disregard for students he does not know personally. The first solution was talking to the instructor (which seemed like a solution I didn't even have the chance to accept since he was so quick to kick me out of the school), the second solution was reducing my time to accommodate the other students, and the third solution was terminating me from the music school.

When my son and I came to the lesson today, we were greeted by Don and advised on guitars and the type of lessons that are provided at the establishment. My son not only got a music lesson with his new guitar instructor Ethan, but I also bought my son a new guitar. I appreciate the professionalism, knowledge of music theory, safety precautions taken by the staff during the pandemic AND that I got to meet the guy (Don) in the band all in one visit. I inherited a baby grand piano that had been in my grandmother's house since at least the early 1960s but probably quite a bit earlier, mostly unplayed. A refinish from decades ago job wiped out any trace of the manufacturer on the front, so it's a mystery who made it or how old it is. I also had no paper trail on how much care it had received over the years, meaning it could have been anything from an easy job to a huge challenge to tune it and get it into really good playable shape. Nick was amazing. He showed up on time, and immediately put me at ease. From a quick glance at the piano he could already give me clues as to what kind of shape it was in (turns out, not too bad all things considered), and as he got to work he took the utmost care in not just doing a simple tuning and cleaning of the piano, but also trying to get a feel for it as an instrument and where we could take it beyond this. He was very careful to get a sense of how my family and I use the piano and where my interests and skill levels were at, to get a sense of how much work we need to think about doing in the coming years to make it work for us without going overboard. I really appreciated his thoughtfulness on this, and on not trying to oversell us or just make it a quick in and out job. His care with the piano itself was superb, and over the course of 3 hours he transformed it from something that sounded like the piano from the cantina scene in The Three Amigos to something that fills our living room with beautiful harmonies. Throughout the process he kept communicating on everything he was doing, explaining in simple terms what he was finding and what he thought was needed, which gave me a new appreciation as well for the complexities of pianos. Nick is also just an easy going, fun guy. As he opened up the piano we kept finding little clues inscribed here and there as to its age and history, and he got as excited about solving the mystery of its origins as I did! Plus Nick is himself a fabulous piano player --- as he tested the tuning I was in awe of his jazz playing --- and before he left he even gave me a few pointers on how to get myself back into piano playing after 25 years of having barely played at all, but also new ways to think about approaching the piano to break the cycle of strict sight reading years of classical piano lessons left me with. In sum, I highly recommend Nick Litterski! He will work with you and your piano to help you get exactly what you need!
