I spoke with Xavier at GLS and made an appointment for a Ukulele lesson for my daughter who is 7. He sounded very knowledgeable and told me that my daughter should start off with a Ukulele and move on to a guitar. I spoke with him last week and made a lesson for today at 11:30am. I got there 10 mins early and he was not there and the business was closed. I sent Xaiver a text at 11:26 am and received no response. Then I called him at 11:30 am and left him a message. I never got a phone call back, even though his VM says that he promises to return calls. I waited some more and finally left. I never received a call back. What a waste of time and what a poor way to manage your business and treat customers. My daughter was heart broken because she was excited for the lesson. I do not recommend GLS for any lesson. read more

My son has been going to Javier for about 7 months . His sessions are 1 on 1 , no one else . Javier is a studio musician and has been playing guitar for over 40 years , he has a keen way of connecting with his students and enables them to easily understand a difficult task of learning the guitar. His lessons are an hour long and are $ 30 . My son and myself are very pleased with his advances with Javier and look forward to what's left to be learned with Javier . After getting my tax returns, I decided that I wanted to buy a month of guitar lessons as a little gift to myself. Probably one of the best things I've done for myself. Xavier loves his squats and his deadlifts but his workout routine comes in second to his passion for music. Only after a few minutes of chit-chat and playing, he understands what you want to learn, and what he can do to help you become a better player. Whenever I became musically curious, he always helped me find the answers. Here's the longer version: I'll tell you a bit about my own improvement below, but I want to focus on Xavier in this review and what makes him such an amazing teacher (I have a Ph.D., spent the last 10 years teaching literature and writing in college, I know a good pedagogue when I see one). Xavier excels at personalizing his approach to each student (what a teacher might call a "student-centered" approach). He has an amazing ear and is able to play, sample, diagnose, and teach nearly any song, on the spot! I've had a couple guitar teachers in the past and all of them either recycled songs they already learned or asked for a week or two to learn a song before teaching it. Not Xavier: you walk in, he asks you what you want to learn, he plays it, analyzes it, records it, breaks it down for you, and teaches it to you piece by piece. He will write tablature for you, let you record him playing on your phone, and/or even write out music for more advanced students. He has a wide range of students learning a diverse array of music, so don't be afraid. I went to him at 32 and he has older students. He also has young'uns (I heard a couple, they were fricking good). I've had a guitar for the better part of a decade, but I'll be darned if I could do much more than play some crusty sounding open chords before Xavier helped me. Now, I'm passable and friends who've played with me and heard me play have commented on my meteoric increase in skill. My wife has been singing Xavier's praises the whole time -- not because she is taking lessons, but because my guitar playing has gotten so much less grating and awful. Flowing fingers that prove he loves his instrument and can easily intimidate his rivals as well. I began taking lessons with Javier in Aug. 2015 and I am really enjoying it. I am a novice player and for my first song, he taught me a Led Zep song (not the standard "Mary had a little lamb"), Over the Hills & Far Away. I didn't know how to do the hammer pull and all that jazz but he was patient with me and I can now do the hammer pull, now if I could just make sound as smooth as he or Jimmy, then I'd really be doing good. I've taken lessons from other instructors (one from Whittier too) and Javier is the best. He will teach you whatever songs you want to learn and he is patient and moves at your pace. He does not make me feel bad if I didn't practice as much during the week. Also, Javier has never been late to a lesson unlike some of my previous instructors. He is very knowledgeable and shares a lot of tips as well. If you are looking for a great musician who can teach music at your pace, please look up Javier. He teaches all genre (jazz, blues, metal, rock, R&B, you name it) on guitar and also teaches bass and ukulele.
