During my trip to Paris, I knew I absolutely had to check out some black-owned restaurants, and Gumbo Yaya was first on my list! When we arrived, it was a bit small on the inside, almost where you had to get up to let someone else from another table out, but I was just glad to be here. We found the service to be lackluster, and although we eventually recognized that gumbo yaya was just the name, it was disappointing not to be able to have any actual gumbo that night. The decor and theme of the restaurant were so cute, and I loved the hip-hop and musical touches around. Coming from the States, when we see fillet on the menu, we often associate it with fish, so since individuals in the group were pescatarian, we thought it would be great for us all, as it was inclusive. But we quickly realized that fillet there was just a chicken breast, so from that, the menu just proved to be very limiting with basically just chicken, waffles, and a few soul food sides. Be prepared for a wait. The restaurant is tiny but they did recommend a couple of cafes we could go have drinks at while we waited for a text or call. We waited for an hour. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of fries and I got the 2 piece and mac and cheese. The chicken was well seasoned and cooked fresh, the waffle was amazing, fries were perfect but that mac and cheese was not it. The noodles were corkscrew and there was a spice to it. My southern US tastebuds couldn't do it. The hot sauce was legit though. Tastes just like Louisiana Hot sauce but it's light. My friend and I split the carafe of lemonade. While the Mac and cheese was good, it could've been a bit more creamy. They sold out of yams but the table next to us said they were good. Being from America, we like our tea and kool aid sweet sweet, we had the tea and lemonade (Arnold Palmer) it was nice but when we added that ginger beer... it took it to another level. I took 2 Metros(first time riding it in Paris), got off and it was right there. The wait was approximately 1.5 hours so me and my friends gave waiter our number. Before visiting Paris, I made a list of places I wanted to visit while there. This place was one of them. It got really good reviews, and was also recommended by a friend. Could a little spot in Paris really do chicken and waffles like home? YES, they can! The chicken was crunchy and still remained flavorful and juicy, and the waffle was soft with a bit of a crisp on the outside. Delicious. Please be mindful that the spot is VERY small, similar to many other restaurants in Paris.
