I was really excited to find not only Soul Food but a Black owned business in Paris. I went on a Sunday and they were serving brunch. They offer a great bundle deal for 26 euros that includes an entree, beverage and dessert. Be sure to bring cash. We traveled far to get to Mama Jackson and sadly, it didn't meet our expectations. We were not expecting American soul food but maybe our taste buds didn't align with our brains? idk but if I'm ever in Paris again, I can't say I'd break my neck trying to get here again like I did the last time. The chicken was ok (didn't care too much for the crust but it wasn't bad), the fries regular and red beans....well the pickings for sides are slim and if not, I wouldn't have ordered them to begin with. But even if you really like red beans, I'd highly recommend you skipping them here. Service was fleeting, this chick was nice when she came but mostly ignored us. Idk if this was standard practice or because of the language barrier. They packed our leftovers in the kitchen and completely left off the half of the mac & cheese I had remaining. I wasn't even sure I got the right plate from my friend. The m&c wasn't good but it was my money and when I woke up the next morning, I had plans to hook it up! But alas, disappointed yet again. I enjoyed the experience but I shall not return. May 17th, myself and five others (from the USA) came to this restaurant per the reviews on instagram. We arrived at 6:00 pm in the rain; and hour and 15 minutes before our reservation (rain was unexpected due to the forecast). The cooks were nice and let us seat until our appointed time at 7:15 pm. However, the hostees came in at 6:55 pm with a very bad attitude and said we cannot seat in here because she had to clean (tables/place was clean already) We said it was raining and that did not matter. Dropped in for lunch on a Saturday on the recommendation of a friend. I arrived around 1pm and was promptly seated, though it did get really busy just a few moments later, so I got lucky. I had a ginger beer and the chicken and waffles. The waffles were great, and you could smell them cooking as soon as you enter the establishment. The chicken was good but definitely different than what I'm used to, having lived in the southern USA and Southern California-HOME of the original chicken and waffles. The skin was really biscuit like and fell off the meat almost as soon as I picked it up. It had a tangy flavor that I couldn't put my finger on. It was like a combination of ginger and spices; definitely not southern style, but again, still good. The dish was pricey at €14 for the plate, but it's enough for two people (or leftovers) easy. Despite it being my first meal of the day, I only had room for one of the two pieces of chicken. I wonder if they'd consider lowering the price of the plate and only including one piece of chicken instead? That'd make more sense from both an economical and gastro standpoint (wink). The place is really small and seating is tight; if you're lucky, you might be able to get one of the two tables outside. Either way definitely worth a try, just go with an open mind, and enjoy the throwback R&B videos playing on the tv screen. read more

I arrived at opening time (around 7pm) so there was no wait. If you arrive later you may have to wait up to an hour depending on your group size as they do not take reservations. I ordered the Mama Jackson plate with the chicken and two sides, and my friend had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was very spicy (I love spicy, so no problem for me) and had a strong ginger seasoning. Absolutely delicious but a bit different from the fried chicken i'm used to in the States. Waffles were exactly like the waffles back home, I smelled the batter right away when I walked in. Service was great, you may have to leave when you are done as there was a line outside of people waiting to come in, but rest assured that we were not rushed during our meal. If you're craving authentic soul food in Paris this is your place to go! Literally the chicken has the right amount of crispy skin and spices, it is so juicy! The portion sizes are large compared to normal French standards. We were too full to order dessert, but would definitely return for another visit. The ambience of the place is great. Seating is available inside or outside. It's an intimate restaurant with all the 90s R&B you want. My friend and I found ourselves, singing, nodding our heads and bobbing to the beat hearing all the classics. If you have plans on eating here you best arrive at opening. It is a small quaint restaurant that boasts some great flavorful food. Make sure you check hours they close midday and open in the evening. We ordered chicken n waffles and jerk chicken tacos. The chicken was fall off the bone tender and seasoned very well. The pricing is decent. The waitresses were amazing. The issue I had was the spice level on the chicken was very overpowering and left a lot to be desired. They sell a wonderful Jamaican ginger beer if you are into it and the blackened fish was amazing. I ordered the house special and was less than happy in addition the skin of the chicken comes completely off before you bite it ie if you pinch to taste. I'm an American living in Paris. When I found out about Mama Jackson, I was super excited to try out their chicken and waffles. The pictures on Instagram looked so mouthwatering and amazing! My first and last visit prove to be quite the opposite. I ordered the chicken and waffles plate with a side of macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese was lackluster but it was hot so we nibbled on it. The real disappointment came disguised chicken and waffles. The coating on the chicken was good and that gave us hope that the rest of the meal would be delicious. Once you get past the coating, you realize that the skin and the chicken is under cooked, bland, and disappointing. I thought perhaps it was the first bite so I I took another bite but was equally disappointed. That was my first meal of the day and it changed my entire mood. I couldn't believe that they actually tried to pass it off as soul food. For all my American friends visiting and wanting to get a taste of home, please do not go to Mama Jackson. You will be disappointed. Mama Jackson needs her black card revoked. She will not be invited to summer cookouts. read more

So, two young African American women from Texas and Michigan visiting Paris wanted a different dining experience. We did an Internet search and found this American "Soul Food" restaurant and figured we should be in for a treat. Well, Yelp says this place closes at 2:30PM on Saturdays, so we hopped on the Metro from our hotel near Disney Paris and made our way in the rain for a plate of Chicken and Waffles. We arrived at the restaurant at 1:55PM, waited a few minutes for a gentleman to come to the front to seat us and guess what... We were told that the kitchen was closed. Hold up, this restaurant does not close until 2:30PM... Closed kitchen at 2PM (what the ?@!%)? I said, "We've come a long way to try the food, is there anyway to talk to the cooks and see if we can get a little something". We were told, "No, the kitchen is closed". My friend and I saw that there was a table of six white males sitting down, we pointed to them and the gentleman behind the counter said "yes, we are trying to get their food out, but the kitchen is closed". I asked, "okay so you can't fry anymore chicken, can we get some sides to go, we came from Dallas and Detroit, man." He, said "No". My friend said, "Not even a piece of pie or cake?", He said,"No". So we turned around and left. Traditional American "Soul Food"???? I think not, I'm not sure where Mama Jackson is these days, but if Mama was cooking in Dallas or Detroit she would never have turned away to hungry sistas with nothing and you still have 30 minutes of business operations on the clock.
