I wanted to love Guven..., and was really excited for my first hair appointment.... I made an appt. for a cut and color over a month in advance. On day of appt., after arriving and checking-in, I waited about 20 mins before my appt. "began" because my stylist was finishing her previous client. I place "began" in " " because after those 20 mins of waiting, a different stylist [w/ whom I had not made my appt.] began the preliminary conversation w/ me about my cut and color. At this point, tho, I was cool and going w/ the flow, so to the different stylist I stated and showed photos of my wants (a color I had had previously in the year). Then the stylist w/ whom I had booked my appt. took-over. Initially, she was not at all friendly, and seemed taxed by the fact she had an appt. However, in time, she did warm and open to me. Unfortunately, she was rough-handed too, ripping a paddle brush thru my hair before and after washing. The color: lets just say I asked for dark blue, but got light green. After the color was rinsed-out, and I glimpsed my "light green" vs. "dark blue" hair, I knew they hadnt listened/paid attention to my words/photos, or they had, but had made a mistake when preparing the color, etc. More unfortunately, after the blow-dry, both stylists went on and on about how good/great/beautiful was the color (NOT WHAT I WANTED, ASKED FOR, SHOWED THEM!!!!!); this seemed like a type of gaslighting [of me by them], and a proactive, bold, pompous insistence of what I got being what I wanted or better than what I wanted... When I first arrived I was told this would be a two appointment ask, which I was totally fine with. The salon never got back to me when I called to book a correction or at least speak to someone about phase two. I came for color/highlights and a trim, I left with horrid color and "layers" around my face and throughout my hair (the photo included is of the back). I had been there for hours, so shame on me for not realizing exactly how bad it was until I got home. $300 later and I was stuck finding another salon to save the day. ALSO: I was told the stylist used a semi-perm color on my roots which I now know was perm. color according to the salon who had to perform a full color correction and new cut to help as this grows out. Zina cut and colored my hair today and I've never had a better balayage! She spent the entire morning with me, making sure I was comfortable and taking her time on my hair ( I have very thick, long hair ). I've had a lot of different stylists in my time, but Zina is by far one of the best. I'm picky about my hair, and I like to go blonder every couple of months, but want it to look natural; Zina did just that. Unlike other salons, I was not double booked. Zina never strayed far away or left me to sit like other salons do. She was always there to talk to me or ask I needed something. I have had my hair cut by both Guven and Rose and have been really pleased both times! I appreciate their dedication to their craft and attention to detail. I have have also gotten several Keratin treatments from Hasan. I've had Keratin in the past but the science has come a long way. Hasan worked to find the best solution for my hair: I wanted something not to strong or chemical, but that has a lasting impact. He has done a great job each time and that's what keeps me coming back. He is always interested in how it it is working for me so we can tweak the process for next time. Although lots of salons have struggled during the many months of the pandemic, Guven's is still providing great service to their clients because they have a loyal customer base and do high quality work. I go to Rani (pronounced Ronnie) for my eyebrow threading and she does a PHENOMENAL job. They're perfectly arched (not creepy looking, but sexy and flattering) and they're EVEN!! This is a huge deal for me, since pretty much every place I go to butchers my left eyebrow. It's sparser than my right one, so people mess up and make it thinner. Not her though, she's so precise and concentrates on every detail. I would recommend making an appointment ASAP :) This salon also has hair and waxing services (including Brazilians) which are only $40! I'm used to paying $55 and up, so I might give it a shot to see how it goes Oh yeah, Rani is awesome. Not sure if you got that :) read more

I left the salon feeling a bit better about the haircut, therefore I'm updating this review as requested by the salon. After I waited over 15 minutes for an appointment I had booked in advance, my hair was absolutely butchered by a barber whom I'd given what I thought were clear instructions - or at least hard to mess up. He took complete creative liberty with the top of my hair, which he claimed he was making more stylish and professional - it's now jagged and misshapen, with sides that are puffed out. And when I tried to say "Ok, that's short enough," or say that something wasn't exactly how I wanted it, he became completely argumentative and wasted my time by going out of his way to wet and comb my hair to prove that he was right. He was more interested in proving he was right - and that my hair looked bad to begin with - than in giving me what I wanted or at least not making me look horrible. That was 7 years ago - I refuse to go to anybody else! For the 2 years I lived in Alexandria, I made the trip to Georgetown every month to see her. For the 4 years of college spent in North Carolina, I made sure a visit was set up every time I was back in town. The first few cuts I ended up getting at other salons in the area had me flying back to Chicago for a cut, until I found Guven and now I can save my flight $$ for actual vacations! I've mostly worked with Gunc and he works magic!.. colors and cuts. He takes the time to talk to you, will let you know if what you want is a bad idea or not, and work with you to achieve the look you're going for. Update: Got an amazing red/purple balayage treatment by Genc and I'm absolutely in love with it! After waiting for months for the perfect color, it really was worth the wait. I have to say that unfortunately the quality of service I've received has gone down hill. My initial experience was amazingggg and I thought I'd never go anywhere else! But I've had to go in for gloss appointments to maintain my blonde (fine, to be expected) but the last time I went I paid around $50 for toner just to come out with the same orangey/coppery tone that I walked in with! The experience before that was similar and the price was always changing. I also ran late once (gave plenty of notice, apologizes profusely) and was treated very poorly- my MIL was in town and noticed it and asked me why I would go somewhere like this ‍ I let it slide but things just haven't gotten better. the salon is great for a first timer but the service seems to go down with familiarity? A bit disappointed but I guess it's time to move on. read more

I am a male with wavy/curly hair. I called in and asked if they would be able to make my hair more manageable and cut the sides and top. Once I arrived, the barber wasn't too accommodating. I asked a few questions and for recommendations and he wasn't entertaining any of that. He cut my hair for ten minutes and was finished. I paid the full price and left. I will not be going back. Some background: I've been a loyal customer for over five years; first at Elite for Hair and now at Guven Salon. Heck, I was the "first to review" Given Salon. I've seen Rose for threading and have been highly pleased, taking a Car2Go or the bus to get there. I've tried other salons/threading locations much closer to where I live or work (the opposite side of town) that are often cheaper, and have not been as pleased. So I've continued to stick with Rose. I've suggested to many friends, some of whom have traveled from MD, to see her not just for threading but also for hair cuts. I appreciated the service provided by Rose and was a large tipper. The past three appointments have made me feel like the past five years of business and referrals meant nothing. (1) I had an appointment; upon arriving Rose asked if I would see Rani because she took a walk-in for a hair cut. Had to wait to see Rani but I was fine with it and didn't think anything of it. (2) I try to make an appointment with Rose and the front desk staff informed me that they want me to see Rani and not Rose. I explain to them that I've seen Rose for over five years and the response I get was that Rose was too busy for threading. Ok, one time thing as Rose typically has wide availability. I see Rani. (3) This past time I made an appointment for Rose. Rose tells me that she gave her clients over to Rani and that she told me to see Rani before. This was not the case. She told me that she didn't want to lose me as a customer and that I should come for haircuts. Rose has been trying to convert me into getting hair cuts from her for the past five years; I wasn't interested as I already had a stylist I was pleased with. I'm mystified. If you don't want to lose me as a customer, then don't lose me as a customer. read more

Alright so Hasan is going to laugh at me for writing a review because we had an in-depth convo about how none of his long term clients right them so I'm doing this to change his opinion. I recently moved to DC from NYC and of course had to leave my incredible stylist (I even considered doing a trip there every couple months so I wouldn't have to make the switch). Well, I realized that wasn't possible so I started my search and was referred here by a friend. I have very thick hair and I'm very tough to please and I recently made the switch from brunette to blonde. Hasan did an incredible job on my color blending the roots just right with what I had already and giving me nice shape from what was dried out from my previous cut. I now have a nice flowy bob. On top of all this I was in desperate need of a brazilian so while I was having my color processed with foils in Eliza was a champ and I now have a new obsession with both of them. She doesn't use a sugar wax but it is incredibly similar (she told me she imports it from Canada) and she made the process as quick and painless as possible. She also gave me some tips on taking care of my skin. Definitely recommend both of them!! read more

I came in a week ahead for a consultation. When it was finally the day for my appointment I called in ahead just to confirm the time I was coming in. They asked me if I could come in a couple days later because the person before me was going to take too long. I think calling in a week ahead and having them look at my hair the day I called was more than enough time to plan a hair appointment. I walked out of the salon feeling like an Herbal Essences model - bouncy, full, voluminous hair that I was subsequently complimented on multiple times at a girls' brunch. Ladies, go see Yusuf - you won't be disappointed. $70 for a women's haircut - he is amazing. Rose is wonderful!!! I have very thick, curly hair and when I moved to DC years ago, I simply waited until I had to go back home to my stylist there to get a haircut because I didn't trust anyone. [My hair got so long I was able to donate it :) ] Rose came very highly recommended from a colleague who also has thick curly hair. I asked her where she went because I had an interview coming up and her hair always looked great - the cut was perfect even when her hair was down and naturally curly, which is important to me. Rose did an INCREDIBLE job. She listened to exactly what I wanted, didn't push anything on me, and cut my hair with such confidence and focus that my worries quickly faded. My hair fell perfectly, just like I had envisioned, with the new cut - even when it was naturally curly! And Rose's blow out is incredible!! She is a master of the blow dryer, gets all the roots, and has a great technique pinning up sections with small round brushes to hold curl and volume. I feel like a model when I leave! Most importantly, she listens to me. I don't like any product when I get blow outs except a tiny tiny bit at the end no where near the roots because I make them last for a week and if there's product in it, it won't last. She uses a tiny bit of product at the end, no hairspray, and the style lasts as long as I need! Her prices are reasonable, especially given the high quality of her work, and I really appreciate that in this city. Rose makes me feel like I've been her client for years even though I've only been to her a few times since I found her about 6 months ago. I'm so happy I have someone I trust in DC now! Also logistically, you can schedule online and it's so easy and convenient. Marie, the receptionist, is wonderful too and willing to help if you need to make a change. I've been going to see Rani for a couple of years now. She does an absolutely amazing job with eyebrow threading, and even though I now live 30 + minutes away, I still make the trek to see her every 3 weeks. I have thicker eyebrows and I had many a traumatic experience (before finding Rani) in which eyebrow waxers would take WAY too much off, leaving me looking pretty ridiculous. Since moving here from Los Angeles, I've had a hard time finding a good place to get my hair done for a reasonable price. Plus I have a bob so I get my hair cut often. The worst hair experience I've ever had in my entire life. Not only did the female hair stylist ruin my hair, she kept poking and burning my scalp (which had to be treated).
