Casablanca is a Moroccan restaurant located in the heart of Saint-Sauveur village. While the…read moreinterior is small (and a little outdated), they have a great wraparound terrace that is quite spacious and perfect for summer. The wait staff was friendly, and the manager/owner was incredibly nice. He was really on top of his game and made a point of regularly checking in on all patrons to make sure everything was OK, and he made you feel like you were part of the family (in fact, he kept telling us Casablanca was our home!). I've dined at Casablanca in the past and it had been a while since I stopped in - one thing that I can say is that the menu hasn't changed very much in the last couple of year. That said, our meals were delicious. First, they serve super fresh bread with the perfect type of margarine (I'm picky like that). No problem if you want more bread either - the wait staff will happily bring more. As well, my water glass was full all evening, which is something that I appreciate. I opted for the Table d'hote, which was a 5-course meal. To start, I had the lentil soup. It was fragrant and VERY flavorful. The manager told me they use duck carcass, saffron and Tajine to make the soup (now, this Tajine bit was unclear to me so he may have been referencing to how the soup was cooked rather than an ingredient!). In any case, while I normally don't eat lentils, I couldn't skip this dish. Noms! The soup was followed by a Moroccan salad; this was basically a house salad topped with a Moroccan-style bruschetta. The salad itself was nothing to write home about - Iceberg lettuce with some cucumber and radishes (it came with a creamy dressing but I asked for olive oil and Balsamic on the side), but the bruschetta topping was great. It had a bit of a kick to it but wasn't vinegary at all. Personally, I would showcase that by serving it on crisps or baguette. After the salad, I opted for snail in a brown sauce with pastry. Now, the look of the dish isn't appetizing at ALL. I mean, it's brown. But the sauce/gravy was really good and worked very well with the shrimp, which were cooked to my liking. The pastry on the other hand, seemed old. It wasn't soft and flaky but rather a little tough. My main dish was linguine with shrimp. I should mention that I rarely eat gluten anymore - but I'm glad I made the exception for this dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked (Al Dente) with olive oil and herbs. I'm not sure what was used, but it reminded me of a black olive tapenade (which I LOVE). It was topped with some fat shrimp and grilled tomatoes, with a side of garlic butter. I really enjoyed this dish. Apparently the chef used to work at Papa Luigi, which explains why the pasta dish was so good! Dessert was included - there were two choices; one was a praline thing and one was a chocolate thing. Obviously I had the chocolate. The waitress told me dessert was made by a Moroccan bakery..... which may be the case, but neither dessert struck me as being particularly Moroccan. My dessert was very, very chocolatey. I enjoyed it but if you're not a fan of the overly sweet, you might want to pick something else. The praline was nice - nutty and not very sweet. I finished off with Moroccan tea that was positively fabulous! Green tea with fresh mint (whole sprigs) and honey. I drank the whole pot. Yummo. My meal cost $26.95 +tax and that was a real bargain for everything I had. The only thing that wasn't included was the tea, which I found strange but I won't complain - my meal was a bargain. The outdated decor lends to an 'old people' feel but just ignore the flowered chairs and enjoy the food - or sit outside on the awesome terrace!

The Long Version: I believe I have eaten at La Casablanca before but it was many years ago before I was on Yelp. Most recently I got food from here through the Too Good to Go app. (It's an app to reduce food wastage. Restaurants sell leftover/day-old food at a discounted price on the app. The catch is it's a surprise bag so you don't know what you're going to get.) I was on my way home and was walking by the restaurant and noticed they had a surprise bag for sale on the Too Good to Go app for $9.99 and I decided to buy it. The man prepared my meal by scooping various items in the warming trays into a takeout box. I got some chicken skewers, rice, roasted potatoes, cabbage, and a vegetable stew (which consisted of carrots, potatoes, bell peppers, and broccoli). I seemed to get a few rogue chickpeas too, lol. The food was flavorful and I liked the seasonings on it. I also liked the variety and that I got to try a little bit of different items. I felt it was a satisfactory deal for $9.99. However on the app it did list that the value of the surprise bag was $29.99, which I don't feel is true, lol. For the $10 I paid, I'll rate it as 4 stars. I'd give it half that rating though had I paid $30 for a takeout box of food (mostly vegetables and rice) from warming trays, lol. The restaurant is inside the Byward Market Square building so it's kind of food court-like but each restaurant has its own seating. The vibe is very casual. The man serving me was courteous. Five Stars -- The Best Philly Cheesesteak I've Ever Had…read more I just had the best Philly cheesesteak of my life. I don't say that lightly. From the first bite to the last, it was absolute perfection. The steak was unbelievably tender, sliced thin and piled high, cooked just right so every bite was juicy and full of flavour. The cheese? Melted perfectly into every bite, rich and smooth. And the bun... warm, soft, with just the right hint of crispness. It held everything together like a proper cheesesteak should. And here's the part that shocked me: it was better than any cheesesteak I've ever had in Philadelphia -- and I've had plenty. This one sets a whole new benchmark. Every ingredient tasted fresh, every flavour balanced. No shortcuts. No filler. Just pure, delicious craftsmanship. It's the kind of sandwich that makes you stop mid-bite and appreciate what's happening. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed something this much. The wait is long because they make everything to order. It was about a 20-25 minute wait. The chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a nice hint of flavour. I feel that the chicken is slightly better here than at Zaki's Broast. Broasted chicken is supposed to be less greasy and oily than fried chicken, but I still found it oily. The best broasted chicken I've ever had was at La Hoyo in Halifax which is now closed :( I'm still looking for chicken like that... The fries here are much better than at Zaki's in my opinion. The fries at Laziz are hand cut and lightly seasoned. The coleslaw here is also amazing. It's the creamy type which I usually don't like but I liked Laziz's coleslaw. The dressing is slightly sweet and they use purple and green cabbage, so it looks really colourful. There's a nice crunch to the coleslaw too. The older man who works here is very nice, but the younger guy was really indifferent towards us. The place is clean enough, as are the washrooms. There's sufficient seating and lots of free parking. It's in the same strip mall as the Mark's, Sushi Kan, and Eclipse Asian Cuisine.

Everything was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. The kibbeh was seasoned beautifully as were the spinach pies. Even the salad was really good. The pita was fresh and perfect as well. I had the rose water iced tea to drink which was quite good and the rose water was not overpowering. One person was serving and cooking. I am assuming this was Omar the owner. I have no idea how he was managing all of that! He also did the art around the restaurant which was beautiful. Definitely a great option in this part of Ottawa!
