This hidden Gem is everything you'd expect for a quaint little spot. Everything even down to the bread is made from scratch. They have donuts on display too, so while you wait for your breakfast order, pick out one to go. I recommend the country fried steak or sausage gravy with biscuits. Decided to make a two hour road trip to H and D Chuckwagon because in the Yelp reviews they said the Apple Fritters were as BIG as your head along with other different pastries. We get there and no fritters no more BIG donuts. We were told they stopped making them two years ago. This is a local hang out cause it's in the middle of nowhere. We had breakfast and unfortunately for me the biscuits and gravy were something I would not recommend, it had a sweet flavor to it and should be savory. The service was acceptable but not great. The restaurant itself was old and run down and when you walk in they know you are a visitor. The coffee was so weak my wife didn't want a refill. We did see some good looking cinnamon rolls in the case so we purchased one for the road. We eat it later and it was delicious. I hate to write a review like this but I wouldn't want someone else to drive a long distance expecting to eat at a good restaurant and find a sub par restaurant. If this place was in my hometown I wouldn't go to it. read more

Just had lunch at H & D. Convenient location on US 10. Restaurant was nicely crowded, yet we were greeted as soon as we entered the restaurant. We took a seat by the front door & enjoyed the flowers on the porch. Our pleasant waitress took our order...special of the day was a big tasty roast beef sandwich served with au jus on the side. Was going to meet some friends here. Showed up on a Saturday and it was closed. Not sure if they are open anymore but it use to be good.

Oh my goodness! This place was amazing. My husband and I stopped here for breakfast on our way north for a weekend of golf with his friends. The food was fantastic and the service was stellar. I got the biscuits and gravy and my husband got a couple of eggs, sausage links, hash browns and toast. My biscuit (it was just one) covered almost the entire plate. It was great, but sadly I could only eat half of it........it was just too much food. That's okay though, I took the leftovers with me. The toast that came with my husband's meal was home made and it appeared to be almost a half loaf of bread. This place also has HUGE and I mean HUGE baked goods. The prices are ridiculously reasonable, the huge baked goods were only 3.50 each......absolutely crazy. We got a apple fritter (did I mention that it was huge?) to go and we are still munching on it a day later. Our total bill came to under twenty bucks. Our server was very friendly and very good at her job, as were the others. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that we don't live closer to this restaurant. read more

Great prices and amazing breakfasts! We are from out of state but often eat here when in town to visit family. As a matter of fact, we had breakfast here twice during our stay! I had two pancakes and 4 slices of crispy bacon the first time and the Sunrise Special (two eggs, choice of meat, hash browns, and choice of bread) the second time. Delicious! Both meals were actually more than I could eat! I chose raisin bread with my Sunrise Special and I received two one inch thick slices of yummy homemade bread! We were told mystical stories of this place having donuts the size of our heads and amazing heaping plates of food, but we weren't prepared for it to be 1) real and 2) as amazingly good as it was. I felt like I was at my grandma's breakfast nook walking in. This is a true small town mom-n-pop place with wood tables and chairs, county decor, and wood paneling. Its all very neat, tidy, clean and feels homey. I never want this place to update themselves. We were greeted by the donuts I had assumed were urban legends. Literally I ran to the case, and continued to point and each type with more awe and wonder in my voice as each pastry appeared larger and creamer then then next. My friends peeled me away to sit down and order breakfast. A few people got the all you can eat breakfast buffet with pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy, smaller donuts, fruit and a full salad bar. I instead opted for a plate of the biscuits and white gravy. I was not at all disappointed in my heaping pile of moist biscuits covered in rich, warm, slightly salty/ peppery gravy with a side of over easy eggs. Our server was so nice, food came out quickly, hot coffee refills were aplenty and the old couple a table over said hi to us. Upon cashing out, I faced the decision I had been putting off- what 2 pound donut to get. I couldn't choose between the blueberry cream cheese one or the vanilla cream stuffed one. The girl at the counter goes "just get both. they're only- wait for it- 2.75 each". Wtf!? These are EACH $2.75!?!?! I've paid an embarrassing amount more for smaller donuts at hipstery places that didn't look near as good as these were. In the end I got both. I have not yet eaten both of them because I would likely die if I attempted to do that in one sitting. It's just as well though because with each spaced out bite of creamy doughty goodness, I'm reminded of my awesome trip to the chuck wagon. read more

What can I say, my fiance and I are suckers for small-town diners. Apparently we like to be eyed suspiciously by locals. The only difference between us is that she is from a small town and can fit in. I am not, and usually don't. So when we walked into this little place that we stumbled onto randomly on the way to Mackinac Island, the people were neither friendly nor rude. The food, however, was very good. She ordered a burger. I got the chili and the salad bar. The burger was a diner burger. It smelled like a backyard barbecue. The chili was meaty and thick and much better than I thought it would be. I added some cheese from the salad bar and it was perfect. The salad bar could have had a few more veggies, but it did have spiced apples, which made me happy. read more

We were camping in Manistee national park, on our way home we saw this place and stopped. Amazing service, amazing food (*note* no credit cards cash only!). The french toast and regular toast was twice the size I was expecting! The sausage was equally amazing.
