Total chaos. A bizarre experience. Here are nine reasons why I regret going to H&R Block: First, my tax-preparer messed up my address on every single page of my taxes ("John" was spelled "Kohn"). Second, she messed up my name on every single page (using my short-form nickname instead of my "legal" full name). Third, she had a rude, disgruntled attitude, as if I was wasting her time by being there. Fourth, even though masks are required in the office, she pulled down her mask to eat pita bread and dip while I was standing right in front of her, waiting for her to finish my paperwork. Trashy! Fifth, when I got home and found the errors, I called the office 5 times but no one picked up. Sixth, I had to drive all the way back to the office, and when I got there, there was a line backed up outside, and inside it was complete chaos: the two people had been scheduled for the same appointment; people with appointments still had to wait outside; and there was *no secretary* working, so "walk-ins" could not get a clear answer about whether appointments were available. The crowd was getting agitated and no one at the office seemed to be "in charge." Seventh, when my tax-preparer corrected her errors, she did so without apologizing and with a defensive, rude attitude ("It was a typographical error!") Eighth, while correcting the paperwork, it was revealed that the tax-preparer had entered my wife's SSN incorrectly. Ninth, to my total amazement, even in the CORRECTED version of my taxes, the tax-preparer *still* left my middle initial out, which is part of my "legal" name. RUN AWAY from this accounting office. Unprofessional & total chaos at this location (Duke St.) last July 2020. Very unprofessional staff. For some reason I do not see a review section for Mark Center so I will post here. I have been going to the Mark Center location for over 20 years last week I dropped of my tax info & I have not heard about my status on my return from this office. When you have a 1040EZ it takes about 20-25 min, you're in and out and honestly I think I'm going to look into turbo tax, reason being this 25 min appointment costs $120 after fees and taxes. However if you have more complicated tax situation then I always trust H&R Block to do filing. I scheduled an appointment to have amended state returns for two tax years. I had all my materials shared with them and they assured me they could complete the work. I followed-up a couple times and was again told the work is in-progress. I received a call after three weeks and was told that they can NOT do the work and they need to refer to me a different HR location. I asked why it took them three weeks to tell me that and they had no answer. As you know, with penalties and interest etc....sitting on returns for 3 weeks or longer can be a big deal. I called the number they gave me for the HR Block office that could do the work and left multiple voice messages. The resource never called me back. Finally, I gave up on HR Block and worked with George Dimov (also found via Yelp). Not only did his team do the work, but they completed it in under 48 hours. RUN don't walk away from HR Block. They are unprofessional, disorganized and expensive when compared to others tax firms. read more

I went in on February 4th to get my taxes filed and fast forward to now March 10th, I called to get a status update and the office doesn't answer the phone. It takes you to another H&R Block(the H&R Block call site I guess) and the person on the phone informs me that there is no record for a filing for my 2022 taxes. Even the IRS website states it doesn't have any record. Wasted a hour and a half of my day on February 4th to find out my taxes didn't even get filed. Paid 225$ for services and received absolutely nothing. Wouldn't recommend this location to ANYONE. I'm now left trying to get my money back and find someone who can file my taxes properly. read more

I came here to get my taxes done in April. My issue is not with the quality of the service, but with the price. I had to pay $250, including $30 for a guarantee, to get my taxes done. It took all of maybe 20 minutes. I have had the same job for 17 years, and my financial circumstances have not changed. I do not have a business with lots of expenses to deduct, and I do not have lots of complicated investments with capital gains to figure out. My only income is from my federal job. I don't see why I should have to pay such a high price for so little work. I also don't see why I should have to pay an extra $30 for a "peace of mind" policy. Why can't a basic guarantee be built into the price? Many companies partition their fees these days: airlines with baggage fees, car rental companies with taxes and fees, meal and grocery delivery apps with service and delivery fees, car sharing and ride sharing apps, etc. Ticketmaster does the same thing with $50 service fees that you cannot opt out of. All the companies these days have all these "extra" fees that you cannot opt out of, except to not use their services altogether. You could just say go to another company, but when most companies in most industries do this, then you really have nowhere else to go and you just have to pay the junk fees. This location is awful. I scheduled an appointment with a very nice man. He is not at the location buy was able to schedule it for me. It was today at 11:00 am. To be fair, I did arrive 10 minutes late. When I walked in there was no one at the front desk. There were two other people ahead of me and I heard one employee, and he was with a client. After 10 minutes, he finished with her and came out. He pointed to me and asked me my name. I told him and said that I had an 11:00 appointment and that I made it over the phone. He said "who with?" I related my name and said that it was mad over the phone and I did not get a name of who I would be meeting with. He rudely said "I heard you the first time!" He turned to another woman and asked her name. He looked an me and said "See! I know she has an appointment because I made it!" I was shocked! Is this a professional H&R Block employee? I was disgusted that I turned and walked out. Keep in mind there is a sign on the front door that reads "Walk Ins Welcome" Reading other reviews of this location, it should either be closed or there should be new employees. My wife & I had our taxes prepared here in early February 2014, and all's well, right? Wrong! On the evening of 14 April 2014, at about 9 PM, we received a phone call from our preparer, telling us that we haven't paid for tax prep services, and our taxes wouldn't be filed until we did so. We retrieved emails and proof of payment to H&R Block, called them back, and couldn't get a straight answer out of them as to why this anomaly came up in the first place. We asked for a follow up call the following day, to ensure that everything had been taken care of, but that never happened. Please avoid this place at all costs. Almost a full year later, we are still receiving error mail from the IRS and having to return to the office (regarding 2016 taxes). I have had to return to this office at least 15 times. When I returned today for what I hope is the last time, I was firm and expressed justified frustration at the fact that I was back there. When the tax analyst asked me where I would get my taxes done, my response was "not here." He asked me to clarify whether that meant that particular office or H&R Block as a company. I clarified H&R Block. He asked me why (I was shocked by this question) and I said because your analysts have proven themselves incapable of doing the job they are paid for. He got angry and told me not to chastise anyone. I said I would not have to express frustration had the job that I paid a lot of money to be done, was done correctly the first, second or even THIRD time. He then responded by saying my return was complicated - as if that is an excuse for doing it incorrectly so many times. It was not complicated. Please avoid this place - specifically, Rozetta Taylor (she was the one that initially ROYALLY screwed our taxes up) and Robert Blades. He was a manager at one point that appears to have been demoted or stepped down from management position. He is condescending, lazy and lacks basic customer service skills. They screwed up my son's tax return... they got lot of charges that will pop up at the end that they could hardly explain. I was really skeptical with the one who was doing his tax return so I asked them to hold the filing and charged us $75 that they said that will be deducted from the fee that they will deduct to my son's tax return. I did not go with my son when he rescheduled the second consultation and aside from charging too much for the processing fee ...they did not deduct the $75 consultation fee as agreed upon!!! $75 for consultation or for wasting our time***it took them forever doing it and ended up redoing it because she missed the student loan of my son! If you like money, avoid this place. When I first sat down with Marsha I had a series of questions about capital gains and non-resident real estate tax. Her responses would be key in my decision to sell my home. I asked very simple questions, such as "will I have to pay more tax if I sell now or next year?" She responded with tax codes and form numbers - even though I practically begged her to speak in plain English. It felt like I was speaking to a politician running for office. Finally, she said, "it's just money" and then continued to lecture me the insignificance of money in the grand scheme of life. It's just money?? Your job is money! That's why I pay you $400/hour. Luckily, my doctor doesn't say, "it's just your health. She then referred me to preparer with more real estate experience. Well - let's just say her colleague was just as useless. This professional kept complaining about her long day. A few times she even skipped over important steps because she was "tired". I learned a few things from this experience. First - don't visit this H&R Block. Second - don't do your taxes in the evening when they might be too tired to care. Third -request a full-time tax accountant. Many of H&R Block's preparers are retired and treat this as a part-time hobby during tax season. The last thing you want to hear is "it's just money". read more

I had a very unsatisfactory visit, and based on the fact that the first thing they bring up before getting started is a statement about "if you're not satisfied with this service we provide, you have no commitment to accept this service" tells me, a lot of people aren't happy with it. I've had the fortune to have a wonderful tax accountant do my income tax for the last 4 years and have gotten significant refunds. Unfortunately, she was very ill this season and unavailable. So of course, I've seen all the H&R commercials they bombard you with at tax time. They're portrayed as "magicians" who can conjure up large returns. Knowledgable experts who can help you get your maximum refund. Bull ****. I brought a ton of paper work with me, which my previous accountant would have used, clothing deductions, home office deductions, medical bills, prescription expenses. The tax specialist said he couldn't use any of it. He plugged in the numbers to the program like anyone could. I owed 500 for Federal, 500 for state. And then they wanted to charge me $200 for a complicated form completion because outside of my W-2, I had a 1099 which was literally a matter of plugging in a few more numbers. I was looking for a tax "specialist" to help me achieve my maximum refund. I didn't need to pay someone $200 to do the same thing I could do on turbo tax so I walked away. I'm not saying I deserved a big refund, or even a refund at all but why pay someone $200 when you can go online and do it yourself. read more

Worst experience I have ever had!! I went in with my boyfriend who presented questions throughout the session. At one point I guess our H&R block advisor had had enough and completely stopped acknowledging his presence. Afterward I reprimanded her for it by saying she should treat her customers with respect. Her answer to this was "whatever". DO NOT GO TO Janet Hammond!!!! Worst excuse of a tax advisor ever!! You're better off doing your taxes online than with her. The receptionist was no better when I went to confront the manager of this lack of professionalism. Furthermore as I was in a meeting with the manager, we were interrupted by several other advisors complaining about all of their customers. Clearly, the head of H&R block needs to train their management, as well as their staff better. If you need to go to an H&R block, avoid this location at all cost. Wow where do I start. If I can rate this location a negative I would. HR BLOCK, where people trust and go to do their taxes. When I sat down with my accountant. He was very profesional and courtesy by explaining to us everything regarding our tax return and that he will help us get the maximum tax return policy. He would explain and go through all the screens. Here comes the kicker, when it got to the refund screen he only explained the $25 dollar discount that we were getting because we had a referral coupon. At no point of that screen or transaction it was explained to us the fee that HR Block was charging us to process our tax return. After he said "ok your tax refund has been submitted electronically to the IRS and your total refund was xxx amount". We were in total shock cause of the lack of explanation from the accountant regarding the total cost for processing fees that we wanted deducted from our tax return directly to the total tax return after the processing fee deductions. They are sneaky. Of course now we're screwed cause he said "that it's been submitted electronically and there is no way to reverse anything." How convenient for them. Thank you HR Block for stealing 90% of our tax return after your processing fees that were never made aware to us. read more

Since h&r block's website rejected my review I will post one here. I came to this location last year to file taxes as well. The man I saw was courteous and explained why I owed taxes and would not be getting a return. I followed his advice so that this year I could hope for a return. Of course I made an appointment this year, but when I arrived I was told I didn't have an appointment. The woman at the reception desk who helped me and got me in to see a "specialist" was very nice and accommodating. The other woman at reception was clearly more interested in her smartphone, her makeup, and flashing her crotch at everyone who walked by. Her outfit was better suited to a nightclub than an office. When she spoke I realized it was she who I had spoken to on the phone and who did not actually schedule my appointment. Surprise, surprise. Well I saw a perfectly nice lady to help me with my taxes. I still owe taxes this year but it's not nearly as much as last year. That's a plus. She is new this year, and she was nice but not overly helpful. I go to H&R Block so I won't screw up doing taxes on my own...lo and behold the day after my appointment I get a call that there's an error and I need to go back to fix it. The man on the phone set up another appointment for me with the same tax pro, and she told me what had happened but she had a lot of trouble fixing it. I really wish they gave these pros more training because this was pretty bad...they actually tried to charge me. On their mistake, they tried to charge me! Nope. Not happening. I received a letter from the IRS over a year after my taxes had been sent in. H&R Block had made an error that was going to cost me a couple thousand $ (I had brought in all the correct paperwork which they later acknowledged). This happened right around the time of some major personal expenses which made the shock of this unexpected cost that much worse. I didn't have the money for this type of cost. I called the corporate office and was told repeatedly by the representative that they could help me cover this cost even though I hadn't purchased Peace of Mind at the initial appointment. I followed up on the steps the representative gave me and then someone else told me they wouldn't cover it because I didn't have POM. I was directed to the local Foxchase/Duke Street H&R Block office where the problem had originally occurred. I tried to figure things out with the local office and was told several times they would have someone call me I back. I waited for months and no one did. I kept following up, finally connected with them, and they did get my interest/penalties covered which I appreciate. They would not help cover any of the other costs. I was a little weary when my husband suggested that we take our financial information to an accountant to have our taxes done (we normally do them ourselves). My husband is a native Spanish speaker (although speaks fluent English), so it was important for us to have a Spanish speaking accountant prepare our taxes so we both fully and clearly understood. We set up the appointment via the H&R Block website. We were given a confirmation with the date, time and accountant name. When we arrived 4 minutes before the appointment, no one was at the front desk... 7 minutes later we were greeted by someone from the back and told to have a seat. It was as if the place was empty. We waited and waited and then were told that our accountant had not yet arrived. When he finally came he did not speak Spanish and it was difficult to understand his English. We asked him if he spoke Spanish, he said no, and then I proceed to show him the appointment confirmation with the name of the accountant. The accountant we were supposed to meet with was sitting in the first cube but refused to greet us... instead we heard him say, "Tell them to come back at another time and to schedule an appointment with ________". We took time off of work to come to talk directly to him and he couldn't even show us his face; how can we now trust them to do our taxes when they aren't even upfront with us? This is the first and last time I will come to H&R block and I would never recommend their services to anyone. Wish I could give this place a big FAT 0..... but I can't! Be prepared to get ripped off. I have always had my taxes prepared by a friend in the past but I wanted to go the quicker route this time and oh boy, what a mistake. My tax return consisted of literally 3 pieces of paper. I actually left a whole stack of itemized deductions at home because the receptionist said that the more complex your tax return was, the more it would cost. So based on this conversation with the receptionist I estimated my taxes would be around $150.00 ($99.95 federal, $49.95 state). My return took literally a whole 10 ten minutes......Grand total 279.00 dollars.....Then to top it all off, none of the paperwork was explained to me. I had to ask what I was signing on everything. And I also was not given the option to leave and go have them done somewhere else. I'm actually leaving alot of details out, but I don't want to waste more of my time on this place. Worst experience of my life......never again. Afterward, I emailed corporate about my horrible experience and all they tried to offer me was a $25.00 gift certificate toward next years tax return. i have b/c anxious over the past several years about doing my taxes. they're not complicated, but i have found, that the older i get, the more calculation errors i make. a friend recommended to me to go to H&R Block---i am soooo glad i did. in less than an hour, alexander (alexandria, va) calmly did both tax returns ELECTRONICALLY!
