I caution everyone against working with this company. My experience was unprofessional and unhelpful. The condensed version is that I went to H&R Block for one purpose: so that I could compare the results of my wife and I filing jointly or separately because this decision could have ramifications for my student loan payments. This task was too complicated for them. In early January, I met with a tax analysist at this location. I told her that I would need her to run our taxes jointly and separately. I was told that this would not be a problem. I wanted to get everything done early, so I uploaded my tax documents on the day that I received them. I had nearly everything uploaded by the first week of February. About a month later I messaged H&R Block. No response. A few days after that, I messaged H&R Block and reminded them of our January conversation. No response. In mid-March I asked for an update, and I was told they would be done by the end of next week. That did not happen. In early April I asked for an update. No response. This happened repeatedly. I finally went into the office on April 12 and I was promised it would be done that day. To H&R Block's credit, they did complete the joint return on that day. But they completely ignored the entire reason why I came to them in the first place. Two days before Tax they finally gave me the numbers for joint versus separate but did it in confusing and grammatically incorrect messages where I could not tell the actual final amounts. It took added prompting to get that information. On Tax Day I called H&R Block to see if they would get my taxes done in time. I was told yes. So, I sat and waited. At ten minutes to midnight, I noticed that they had requested an extension that was never communicated to me or approved of by me. They finally filed my taxes on April 17. It was incredible expensive and I was not offered any discount for the delay. I was never able to seek out the other consultations that I needed because of this. I understand that the people working there are humans and I do not want to discredit the human needs of the employees. However, I chose this company for the safety of a larger organization. I figure that if one person could not do their job, there would be more there to fill in the gaps. That is not the case. Even when it became abundantly clear that the person assigned to my case could not get it done satisfactorily and in time, the case was never spun off to someone else. I made an appointment at the Kodiak Island office on line. The day before someone called me and said that office will not be open for two more weeks. So then I made an appointment on line for the Anchorage office. I had to fly over and take cabs to get to the location. I waited outside in freezing cold and no one showed up. I called the number on their door and it sent me to a call center that could not get ahold of anyone at the Anchorage office. This trip cost me over $500.00 and I never got any of the tax issues done. When I got back to Kodiak H&R Block sent me a survey asking how my appointment went. That's funny because the call center guy said I didn't have an appointment. The hub I had the appointment sent me an email asking why I wanted to come there when I live in Nevada. I have lived in Kodiak since 2019. These people and their computer appointments are very unprofessional. I still don't know why the guy didn't show up. Maybe got too drunk the night before and didn't wake up. read more

I was filing my taxes for the first time last year and I made the mistake of going to H&R Block. Never again. I scheduled an appointment after work here since it was the most convenient location for me. When I went in, I was informed whoever I was originally supposed to see was unavailable. No big deal, I figured. Wrong. I met with a man who looked like an old disgruntled Santa Claus (minus the red suit). He was not friendly at all. I felt pretty uncomfortable, and not just because I was sharing personal financial information with a stranger. I almost felt like I was inconveniencing him by making him do his job. I told him more than once that this was my first time filing my taxes, but I don't think he could have cared less. He barely explained what he was doing on his computer, and whenever I did ask, he gave a very brief answer that wasn't really an answer. On top of being unfamiliar with the tax filing process in general, my current job puts me in a situation where I need to fill out different forms than the average worker would. This guy had no idea what to do. At the end he said I owed the good ol' feds about a third of my yearly salary. Even I knew that wasn't right. I don't know if this man is inept or just lazy. I asked him to double check everything to see if there were any errors, but he seemed to think that had to be the correct total since that's what his computer told him. The appointment ended when I opted not to file at that moment and the man sent my information to someone at another H&R Block location who he thought we be able to better assist me. Since that was at another location I won't go into detail in this review, but talking to her was a better experience. You're better off getting a friend or family member to help you with taxes and/or using a free online filing service, depending on your income. I cannot stress this enough..do not use this company. The Emerald Care is a way for them to take advantage of lower income customers. They messed up my taxes and treated me badly. I recorded all my encounters. Their corporate office does nothing with complaints. The mistakes they made cost me money. I had to take my tax return somewhere else to get my amended return done. They even put the wrong years investments into my return. The District Manager repeatedly told me he would correct all of this and I gave him the corrected amended return. He ignored me again. I am filing a complaint with IRS and they can deal with them. read more

Steven Major is awesome! I went in because I got a letter from the IRS saying I owed money in back taxes. Steven worked with for almost four hours to sort out my taxes and get the whole thing figured out. Originally the IRS claimed I owed them $2700. He helped me figure out I only owe $250! I learned a great deal from him during my visit. I'm pretty sure I'll never use TurboTax again. I'll be using H&R Block for my taxes from now on! read more

The IRS paid h&r block my tax refund and it was supposed to be forwarded to my bank account but never showed. I went into one of the offices for help. A lady from a cubicle never came out to introduce herself, she had me yell my SSN and full name from the waiting area. She talked in huffs and sighs and said it was probably my fault because I choose to do my taxes through their app. Whatever lady just help me figure it out. I signed a release form and waited to see what she could find. She called back that night and I wasn't expecting it. I couldn't hear her and tried to ask her to call me at a later time but she said my bank has my money and check with them. Okay so I'm confused but check with my bank and nope nothing. This lady obviously hates her job and is very lazy so I make an appointment at another office. I'm frustrated when he tells me they can't do anything at all for me because i filed online. She told me different and has my personal info.... So I ask him whom the right person is to get ahold of becuz this is a lot of money and I need it. He gives me two numbers. The GM wouldn't put me through to her boss and she really did seem to want to help. Finally! We played phone tag and got nowhere. She wanted me to sign more release paperwork to track my refund. I tried to tell her about how her employees treated me, literally telling me it's my fault and pushing me aside (GM and I found out it's most likely h&r blocks fault btw) I'm in tears at work trying to ask her for some real help because I'm learning disabled and don't like people treating me like I'm dumb. I lost it I admit but they lost 3 grand of my money and just shrugging their shoulders sending me back and forth. It felt so defeating. I went back into the office where lazy lady talked very loudly about how she just came back from vacation and is having a hard time getting back into her job. I'm guessing I was the office gossip because of my outburst. I'm grieving my baby and I'm about to lose my home because you fucked up, I don't care about your stupid vacation troubles. I just want her to do her job. I signed and she said "there, we're done with each other now if you have anymore trouble you can contact the IRS." She told me I'd get a letter in the mail saying they received my paperwork but the trace could take up to three months. I didn't say a word and I was shaking, I was too upset so I just shut down. As we pulled away I saw three of the employees standing there laughing and looking over at me, lazy lady even pointed at me. The posters in their offices are supposed to be ironic I guess. After being laughed at and pushed to the side multiple times I don't even want to contact them again. So thank you h&r block in Anchorage for all your customer abuse. Really glad I paid for a service with you guys to scam me out of three grand. read more
