It involved some partial rollovers into qualified plan from IRA preceding the conversion. I had done a bit of research but wanted an expert to validate the specifics of my situation. While other attorneys I've met with in the past on other topics have a free consultation to validate they are in a position to help; Eric charges $250 for the initial conversation which is an in person meeting. He doesn't offer a first 5-10 minute phone discussion to ensure he is a fit or the need. After about a week, he called to say what I was specifically trying to do wouldn't work. I requested him to send any specific reference to the law section; IRS publication; or articles as his evaluation was contrary to what I was finding myself. He said he would send me something, but never got back to me. There was some additional up and back with questions as I sent him some IRS material after he never got back to me per above. Eric is not responsive, going weeks without a reply. He emailed me on Nov 9th apologizing that he'd been on a big project, and would reply soon. It is now Dec 2nd and still not heard. My perception is that my question was not in Eric's wheelhouse, familiarity with current rulings regarding rollovers to qualified plans from an IRA of earnings, leaving the basis behind in an IRA. In the end I felt like I wasted time and $250 without clarity. To his credit, at least he never asked for more than the initial consultation fee. But regardless I still feel as though I don't have a solid answer and would he would have been better for him to simply decline to engage on the topic during the initial meeting if this wasn't the type of thing he could get to resolve quickly or he didn't have bandwidth.

Normally, I self-prepare and self-file my own federal and state/local tax returns but because I moved mid-year from one jurisdiction to another, I thought it prudent to have a tax professional prepare and file my tax returns for tax year 2023 as I was not confident that I could accurately determine how much I owed to the District of Columbia and how much I owed to Maryland. In early 2024, I did some searching on the web and I was impressed with the enthusiastic Yelp.com reviews for Michael S. Febrey, Certified Public Accountant of Gaithersburg, Maryland. There were only three reviews for Mr. Febrey on Yelp.com (all from February 2011), but they were glowing. I hired Mr. Febrey and he prepared and filed the relevant 2023 tax forms for a relatively reasonable fee ($400). The payments I that I owed and my refunds occurred smoothly. In 2024, I was suitably impressed and grateful to Mr. Febrey. Because I forgot to file a new tax withholding form with my employer until mid-2024, I hired Mr. Febrey again in early 2025 to file and prepare my tax forms for tax year 2024. In March of this year, I arrived at Mr. Febrey's office to review the tax filing forms. Mr. Febrey said there was one problem: for some reason, he was unable to complete an electronic filing and payment to the Comptroller of Maryland. Mr. Febrey assured me that he had made no errors and it was some kind of an IT-problem with the Comptroller of Maryland. Because my filing for the previous tax year was handled well by Mr. Febrey, I did not doubt him, and I paper filed and mailed my Maryland tax form and personal check to the Comptroller of Maryland on March 5, 2025. I owed Maryland $1,516. The Comptroller of Maryland deposited the check on March 13, 2025. However, on April 30, 2025, the Comptroller of Maryland deducted another $1,516 dollars from my bank checking account. That same day, I called Mr. Febrey and explained the problem. Instead of Mr. Febrey saying "I'll contact the Comptroller of Maryland and solve this problem for you," Mr. Febrey simply gave me a contact phone number for the Comptroller of Maryland and suggested that I call the Comptroller's office myself saying that he would have to call the same phone number himself to solve the problem and that would require me to pay another $400 fee for his time. I wasn't happy with Mr. Febrey's "solution," but anxious to have this matter resolved quickly I called the phone number that Mr. Febrey gave me to contact the Comptroller of Maryland: it was out-of-service. I eventually found the correct taxpayer hotline phone number and I spoke to a Comptroller of Maryland employee who told me that an electronic payment had been arranged for the $1,516 as well as the deposited check for the same amount. I protested that neither I nor my accountant, Mr. Febrey had filed any electronic forms and I had filed a paper return and paid by personal check. The Comptroller of Maryland employee insisted there was an electronic filing and payment in addition to the paper filing and personal check. The employee said that a check from the Comptroller of Maryland in the amount of $1,516.00 would be sent to my address within four-to-six weeks. I then called Mr. Febrey again. He insisted that he did not file an electronic return or on-line payment to the Comptroller of Maryland and that the employee must have lied to me. I asked Mr. Febrey to contact the Comptroller of Maryland and see if he could straighten out the situation but he refused unless I paid him another $400 fee. I protested that I saw no need to pay him more money to follow up the matter and that he had a professional responsibility to aid his client who had already paid the original fee. The Comptroller of Maryland still has not returned the $1,516 overpayment to me. I have also attempted to contact Mr. Febrey again on June 3rd and June 4th and he has refused to take my calls or return my messages. I suspect this is because Mr. Febrey probably realizes that he succeeded after all in electronically filing and authorizing a payment to the Comptroller of Maryland and at the time he did not realize that he had done so. As a result, the Comptroller of Maryland charged me again for the same amount. Even if Mr. Febrey is not responsible for the overpayment to the Comptroller of Maryland, he has refused to assist me in any meaningful way, which I consider to be a failure to live up to his responsibilities to his clients. If one hires Mr. Febrey to file his or her taxes and there is some kind of problem, do not expect him to come to your aid. At least, not without a second payment of Mr. Febrey's fee. Avoid Michael S. Febrey and find a Certified Public Accountant who won't abandon and ignore his or her clients.

I sent in all of my paperwork by March 19th, just after their deadline to have taxes submitted by April 15. No problem, they filed an extension for me. I followed up in April, and again in July to check on status... and received no reply. I called later in July, to see if I could speak with Alice (our accountant at the firm) directly. I tried a few times to reach her and on August 27 received an email informing me that Alice was no longer with the firm but that Ami would be handling our taxes. There was no other notice - not a note from Alice letting us know she was leaving, nor any sort of apology for the long lapse in communication. Ami then did our taxes and sent a link to review them. The numbers looked good, but she messed up the names on the return. I reached out to have her fix them. Silence. After multiple attempts, I finally got someone who was able to fix the names. I went to review the return and the refund amounts were now different by several thousand dollars. I politely inquired and was told this is due to a 529 plan distribution which they had somehow forgotten to include when they did the taxes earlier. They didn't have any receipts for offsetting expenses, so assumed there were none, and didn't bother to ask. It took a few tries to get that fixed, but they did. They then tried to submit my taxes electronically, but they input the wrong PIN numbers. The correct PINs were in the initial correspondence that I had sent them that included all of my relevant tax information. They were called out in a separate paragraph of my cover letter to the accountant. I re-provided the PINs over the phone and the IRS accepted the files, so I'm now hoping that it's all good. I am not a happy customer. I pay an accountant to do my taxes because they're supposed to keep things straight. In fact, the normal process to institute an internal controls program in any business is to hire accountants to make sure that things are properly - what's the word? oh... yeah... - accounted for. This firm couldn't communicate what was happening with their internal processes, and then made careless mistakes and oversights, and couldn't communicate with me about my taxes. And for the record - we had a mess of deductions, and the amount of the refund was sufficient that each month our tax filing was delayed cost us roughly $300 in interest. I've not seen any offer of recompense. I'm definitely not trusting this firm with my accounting going forward.

I…read moreswitched to Mary Snider's office a few years ago and State Farm has progressively gotten worse, incorrect billing, incorrect information, repeated errors that take months to resolve with numerous calls and emails. She tried to blame me the client, as well as underwriting, stating that properties require local management. I notified her that all properties have local DC management located only a few blocks away and I as well am DC based. She made a mistake and simply cannot accept that. It cost me time, money, and stress all of which could have been avoided if she had updated my record to correct State Farm's error. Overall a hot mess of a service. Avoid her office.
