I came to H&R Block last week and the service was Wonderful! I had Pamela as my advisor and she was friendly, funny, and patient with me. I had a lot of papers to sort through and she handled it professionally, explaining every line to me as we went through the process together. In the past, I just handed my paperwork to the advisor and sat in silence until the job was done, but I enjoyed Pamela's feedback and tips with organization for next year. The fee was also surprisingly low (compared to what I've paid in the past). I also received my refund in under a week!! Super fast!! I decided to use a tax "professional" for my tax return since I had to file in 2 separate states. The gentleman who helped me (George Klatt) clearly had no idea about filing in any other state aside from Illinois. I actually brought up a renters deductible available in Indiana that this guy had no idea about. I ended up owing a substantial amount to the federal government, despite remaining in the same tax bracket. I asked what had changed this year? He told me "I don't know, maybe you filled out your paperwork incorrectly". That was the only advice or explanation I received from him. I asked him if there was any way to fix it for next year and he said "I'm not sure". I also asked about filing an extension or how to go about paying in increments. He said "it's better to pay everything up front". Not helpful at all. My appt ended with me almost in tears because I was so frustrated and got zero help or advice from Mr Klatt. I went up front to check out and pay the $80 to H&R Block as advertised for a 1st time client. They told me the total price of my visit would be $200+ since I had to file in 2 states and my appt was with a "senior tax advisor" along with some other fees I had no idea they were adding on. I will never use their services again. Terrible experience. Terrible customer service.zero explanations. Save yourself the frustration and hire an actual professional, or file online!! read more

If you have anything more complicated than a fairly simple return that only includes *one* state, GO ELSEWHERE. I did my taxes here in 2016 and 2017, and while I think they managed to avoid making any egregious errors, I have very little confidence that their work was entirely accurate, much less that they maximized my returns. Their tax software is a disaster that even they can't navigate - I followed on-screen both times, and it's clear that the software is a huge part of the problem. Both of the professionals I worked with kept getting confused among all the various poorly labeled tabs/windows. Even worse, I got the sense that both of them would be lost without the software. They were relying very heavily on simply plugging numbers into the correct boxes and letting the software spit out an answer, as demonstrated by the fact that they couldn't answer many of the fairly standard questions I was asking. My 2016 return included residence and employment in two different states, a 1st time home purchase, and an unusually large and messy 2015 return. After a very long time entering info into the software and watching the tax preparer get increasingly concerned and flustered, I was told that she would need to "do more research" and have me come back to finish the return. Okay, sure - I'd much rather they do that than slap-dash something together in a hurry that might contain errors. When it was time to come back, rather than any kind of explanation or reassurances, I was merely handed an enveloped stuffed with my tax papers, shown my (huge) bill, and asked to sign off. When I asked a few questions, one of the answers amounted to, "well, that's what the computer is showing, so that's what we're going to put into the forms." Wow, okay then. Never mind that garbage in = garbage out; we'll just run with what the computer currently says! My 2017 return was even worse. I was hoping that working with someone different might help. Nope. It was worse. He was excruciatingly slow, but I can overlook that if the person is professional and competent. *sigh* This was another case of sitting there for a very long time as the person enters information into the (still) confusing tax software. There were numerous instances where I had to point to the thing he was looking for on-screen, as I apparently had a better grasp of the software layout after staring at it during my visit than he had after (supposedly) being trained in it. It got worse. We discovered that my employer incorrectly sent my tax withholding to the wrong state. This is a PITA but not the end of the world. But in my case, my oh-so-professional tax preparer took this as an opportunity to FRIGHTEN AND ANTAGONIZE ME AND LAUGH AT ME. I ultimately got all of my money back from that state, but that didn't stop this jerk from making it sound all but certain that I was about to lose roughly $5000 and would have no recourse over it. Did I mentioned that he treated this as humorous?? I know some states have better regulations around this kind of thing, but be warned that no matter what H&R Block claims about being willing to help in the event of an audit, they and other tax preparers are *NOT* legally liable for any mistakes they make. In other words, they can carelessly slap-dash an error-filled return together, charge you a few hundred dollars for the effort, and then if and when the IRS knocks on your door for an audit, they can (and probably will) just shrug at you. So take the time and look around for someone who gives you reason to trust them. I wish I'd had the time to do so in 2016, and I would have done so in 2017 if I didn't still need someone who could understand the logic and mess of papers they gave me in 2016. PLEASE READ THIS ALL: IT WILL SAVE YOUR CREDIT !!!! (If i could give negative stars - i would here!!) I went to H & R Block on Broadway last year to get my taxes done. In 2008 I lived 6 months in Indiana, 6 months in IL & bought a place..so there were many different forms and such I would need (oh, plus i had a 1099 form!), so decided it was a good idea to leave it to a "professional". BOY WAS I WRONG. This cost me dearly. Not only with my credit - but they also charged me $319 to do them (WTF!!?) Pamela did my taxes, turned out i owed IN $824. I thought this was odd as I never have owed them more than like $60 or $70. Anyway - at the end of the visit I was getting a nice return from IL (My employment was in IL), hefty from federal (thank you homeowners credit), so no problem with paying IN $824. Of course - i'm going to wait till as close to 4/15 as possible to send them any $, but in the meantime I received a letter from State of IN saying basically they didn't like how the $$ was allocated between states (IN and IL). So, I took this back to PAM, they "revised" my taxes and i all of the sudden OWED INDIANA NOTHING! Really? Why wouldn't they have done this for me in the first place? I sent the revised form off, and in the meantime receive another letter from Indiana stating i owed them $824 + some other late fees and will be reported to collection!! I then called the parties involved - and believed that the paperwork just got crossed in the mail. I expressed my high concern of this being reported to the credit agencies as I would like my credit to remain good. A few weeks later, i received a letter stating IN Dept of Revenue SENT me to collection!! Of course by this time the satellite office was long gone - and pam was of course unreachable, so found someone in the year round office on Clark to try and help. I faxed the IN Dept of Revenue the revised forms they apparently never got, then received a letter at the end of August, 2009 saying it's all good, and nothing more is required. (I never had to pay IN anything!!) Fast Forward to February, 2010, when I am trying to refinance. My refinance lady expresses concern that there is a Tax Lien on my credit report! I could NOT BELIVE IT! I do have good credit, but this definitely was hindering my report - and will remain on my record for 7 YEARS? What happens to sh*t H&R Block? Nothing. Great. Real fair isn't it? I've been working the last 4 weeks to get this off of my credit report by sending them that final letter from IN saying all is good - and TransUnion is the only one that took it off. The other two refused. (I don't know how the hell thats possible..but what do i know?) Moral of the story: 1)DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GO TO H&R. I was a do-it-yourself tax person for many years (think 15+), then I moved back to Chicago from Michigan and knew my taxes were more complicated for me alone to complete (think sale of home, moving expenses, two different state tax systems/filings, etc.). I went to Susan Weakland at this H&R Block location, per a coworker's recommendation, and I've been going to Susan ever since. She's just fantastic! Her calm and tempered demeanor are perfect for the job. NEVER EVER use HR Block - we have been using HR Block for 10+ years - we got audited, there was NO Support, multiple Managers assigned w no replies, follow up - could not get a hold at anyone with a Senior Manager level for State of IL (until we got a hold of a HR Block Manager in TN - by random chance) - we have always signed up for the "peace of mind" it's a scam! read more

Went in yesterday to get an ammendment done on my state taxes for the year 2011. I knew what the problem was, just didn't want to deal with the tedious hassle that goes along with doing taxes - and apparently neither did this H and R block location. Through my 1.5 hour ordeal, i got passed along to 3 different people. These people, IMO, had little knowledge on how to use their software. My guess is taht they learn how to do standard returns and thats it. In the end, i simply could not pay for their services because it was so bad. Do not use this location, you're better off trying to do it yourself. read more

Wow, I was surprised to read these terrible reviews. I've been going to Susan Weakland at this office for more than a decade. In that time, she's given me great advice, saved me lots of money and always been reliable and friendly. I've had my taxes done at this office for almost 20 years. Before Susan got there, I also had an excellent tax preparer. I went to H&R Block after hearing a report on Public Radio about how having an expensive accountant do your taxes was no safer than H&R Block. In this study H&R Block employees made fewer errors on returns than private accountants. I have no experience with anyone in this office but Susan, and I highly recommend her. read more
