First off, he has a total lack of respect for his clients, he has flippant manner and is usually unavailable to speak either on the phone or in person. He had a lovely assistant(retiring) who did her very best to assuage client's concerns but this did not help when your desire is to trust that you have a knowledgeable CPA that is going to watch your back. He did not watch mine!

My problem with Mr. Chopin is not with his competence - he is a by-the-book accountant who will gladly tell you multiple times of his 45 years experience, but with his "bedside manner." When I say by the book, I mean that literally because while I was there, he repeatedly referred to some official accounting book, which I have never experienced before with an accountant doing my taxes. When I called and he told me what I owed, I said I had questions. His response: What questions? This is what you owe. I have been doing this 45 years. Not helpful. I did sit down with him to go over the returns but his answers to my very direct inquiries were convoluted and chaotic. He kept insisting that I had no understanding of accounting and he was getting frustrated with my attempts to get clarification, which never came from his confusing responses. He also informed me that he had worked for Grumman as an engineer and he said that I had a rocket scientist doing my taxes. No self-esteem problems here. The assistant who works with him is very lovely and kind. I wish she were the one doing the taxes. I will be looking elsewhere for an accountant to do next year's tax returns.
