I had a bookkeeper that we had used for several years and thought everything was fine. Until... I was notified that we were being audited by the FTB (Franchise Tax Board). The FTB claimed we owed thousands of dollars in back taxes, penalties and interest for a number of years. I gave Connie copies of the tax returns for the years in question and had her review them. She found a number of mistakes as well as several deductions the bookkeeper had missed. Instead of owing thousands of dollars to the the FTB, they actually ended up owing us money! Since then, I have had Connie set up several trusts for my family as well as perform the monthly accounting and payroll for all my businesses. She is always available when I need her and her staff is very professional & knowledgeable. Their fees were very reasonable and were less than other Enrolled Accountants I have talked with.

It was mostly dropping off documents and information with his staff or talking with him via email. I thought this was normal so I had him do my taxes a second time. This time there was little to no communication, only email. When he asked me a question about a stock sale, I asked for clarification and he ended by saying "Am I still confusing you?" This was really insulting. Then he approached me (again via email) saying that he recommended filing an extension because he thought that by doing this he could get me a greater return. I agreed. Well, the increase amounted to $110 and I ended up paying a penalty. So it was a wash. I had already paid $605.00. I received a second invoice for fling the extension for $520.00. I had to inquire and he finally said that I didn't have to pay the second invoice. Somehow i thought going to a Certified Public Accountant (who was referred by a friend) would insure a good experience. I was wrong. I have been going to H & R Block for two years (something I thought I'd NEVER do) and what a difference. They spend as much time as I need to review the final documents before we file. I can ask questions without feeling like an idiot. I get answers that make sense. Having a title/certification does not necessarily mean you are going to have a professional experience.
