I've done my own taxes for decades (I work in a related field), even handled two audits which were successfully resolved in my favor. I read a lot, I'm in a lot of groups, I know about tax breaks and loopholes for the average household. We had an unusual tax situation one year and that's why I seeked his services. His secretary screwed up the appointment date and insisted that all I had to bring was my w-2 and copy of prior year tax filings. Knowing a bit about taxes I was surprised but obliged. One day out of the blue (and a month too early) I get a reminder call for an appointment the next day. Since I was flexible, I agreed even though that was not the appointment date that I had set. When I got there, mr. almighty chews me out for not bringing a slew of paperwork (about which I had repeatedly asked) and made fun of my side business. Days later I receive a huge document with instructions on everything I should have brought to the appointment I had just had!!! I had no time to work on the taxes myself given the new level of complexity, but I should have not dealt with him at all. I didn't see any value added over TurboTax and it cost me about 12 times more. Never again.

Long story short, Ms. Runkle hung up on me when I questioned her accounting service. She does the…read morebooks for our subdivision's water company and emails monthly invoice. If a member misses payment on an invoice, they have no way of knowing because she refuses to put past due amounts on invoices. I am well aware that this would be a very easy task in QuickBooks which is the software she uses. It's easy to miss a payment because until this year we were only billed every other month; now this has changed to monthly. So, even with the best intentions, one can miss a payment. She refuses to send statements also which would be the other way to alert water company members of past due amounts. None of this would be difficult for her to do in QuickBooks. So, I called her after the water company treasurer explained to me that she was being uncooperative with them. They had asked her to send letters and a current statement to those of us who had missed a payment (in my case, due to a family disaster.) Her letter was inaccurate (and quite hostile) for which she did apologize. When I began with one last question, apparently she'd had enough and hung up on me! ! An individual who has worked with Runkel tells me that doesn't "do customer service." She has blamed her poor service on the inability to hire a competent bookkeeper. (As a former bookkeeper I would expect she'd assess their skills before hiring them.) I have worked for difficult CPA's and I will definitely add her to the list of ones to avoid when possible. Please be careful.

We have been going to Barbara for at least ten years. We have been going to her every year like…read moreclockwork to do taxes for my business, my husband's business, and our personal. This year we called her office early in the year to file our taxes as usual. They told us to wait. They said they weren't due until October because of the time extension due to the storm disaster relief. So we waited per their instructions, even though we were ready for her to do them. We dropped them off before the 15th of September at her office thinking they have a month to prepare. They called back after they had been dropped off and told us Barbara cannot do our taxes because we aren't on her "list." I asked, What this "list" I have never heard of? She kept repeating that we are not on the "list" so they are not going to do our taxes. And, by the way, "your corporate taxes are due tomorrow, but Barbara isn't going to do them because you aren't on the 'list.'" We waited this late to file because they told us to. We never file late. Now she will not do our personal, nor corporate taxes because we are not on some "list." Very unprofessional. We have followed up with phone calls and messages, Crickets!

Rude when trying to clarify questions about payroll at a previous office I worked at. My employer ended up owing 3+ employees over 2k each because of Barbara's mistake. I never once got an apology. The office has since moved on to a reputable payroll company.
