I've read other reviews here on Yelp and was very hesitant in utilizing the services of this tax preparation company but I am happy to report I did have an excellent experience! I was assigned Sue who was amazing!! The price was quite reasonable to file my federal and state taxes in which I provided scanned copies of all my documents the day before my appointment. No wait and I was done in one hour for a joint tax return. I also need to note, out of all the tax preparers and even CPA's I have used in the past, none, not even one, has ever provided me information about my limiting my tax liabilities. Sue noted some very simple things to do, and to return to her in October to get a head start/make sure my next return is on track with no surprises. I advise everyone to stay away from any H&R Block Office. Our taxes that were prepared by the Briggs Chaney and Laurel Offices had errors that have caused me to spend numerous hours on the phone with the IRS and Maryland Comptrollers Office. The mistakes made included failure to include income earned and withholdings on our 1099s' for our 2023 taxes resulting in a refiling of an amended return. Still, on the amended return, documents were not included with the amended return. This caused overpayments to the State and underpayments of taxes to the Feds. It is extremely difficult to speak with the staff at the Offices. The receptionist will take a message, but the tax preparers do not call back. They do not keep appointments that are confirmed via email and office hours varies. The complaint department for the National Office does not provide follow up for complaints either. I am frustrated and am writing this zero starr review as a warning. I wish I had known how incompetent the tax experts are and how difficult it is to communicate with anyone in this organization. read more

Don't go here. These people LOST the physical copies of the tax documents that I brought in and left with advisors. Don't ask me how that's possible. I called multiple local offices to see if they got transferred somewhere else to no avail. When I called H&R corporate, they said they likely got transferred to somewhere secure (Iron Mountain?) where they will be shredded. Not very reassuring. read more

I've been going to H&R Block for almost 10 years but think this will be the last time. I'm still waiting for my taxes to be 2nd reviewed from May. This is the worst experience I've had with HR block. The colesville rd branch in silver Spring specifically. I booked a sit-down appointment online, and they called and confirmed the appointment. Then my husband and I show up after getting a babysitter and planning our lives around this. They claim we always had a drop off appointment and then proceed to be so rude and condescending. I checked my email and text messages and no we did not sign up for a drop off. They also attempted to reschedule but then give sooo much attitude and claim they are booked when they aren't. The whole experience was unreal! Don't go there! I wouldn't even trust dropping off my documents with them! read more

I had my previous year's taxes completed. My professional was knowledgeable and provided good service. My rating is because: I made an appointment that was canceled and no new appointment was available. I have spoken to the main number and they have told me that the office is by appointment only, but there are no appointments available until tax season. I asked when the office would be reopening and the employee told me sometime in December, but was not able to give me a date. I asked for an appointment with a senior tax adviser or Master Tax adviser and was told there were no appointments available in my area. (I live in Washington DC) The only appointment available was 25 miles away. I had a question about the taxes that were prepared and called on three separate occasions and did not receive a call back: I asked for a telephone number for the office and was told that I had to call the main office. I have tried multiple times to reach the office and my calls have not been returned. read more

Paulina is THE most condescending rude person I have ever had to deal with in such a professional setting like tax return. She kept arguing with me about HER mistakes and then claimed I only scheduled my appointment for 15 minutes, and said they tried to call me but my number was inactive? How are you on the phone with me right now if my number is inactive? I've been trying to call ALL WEEK with nobody answering or returning a call. I will never use H&R Block for tax services ever again and will go back to credit karma after this year. read more

The first problem was the temperature of the office. I glanced at the thermostat- 77 degrees. No one was able to tell me why it was so hot in there on a day where it was already 63 degrees outside. I sat there for an hour and a half, sweating. The second problem was the person I was working with... I had zero confidence in her after she couldn't spell anything I was trying to tell her regarding my information, even after I handed her my W2 and my license. She had to research things which should probably have been common knowledge (things I already knew.) She also had no idea what I was talking about when I said I had uploaded my documents online to their website so that it would be easier. She said she was unable to download them that way. There was also no wifi in the office for me to use my laptop to send them to her. I ended up having to log on, on her computer, and have her download things that way. Not ideal. She also told me the service base rate (for a single person with a not so complicated return!!!) was going to be at least $300. I left after way longer than the appointment time was supposed to be, with the rest of my documents so she could finish inputting the information and get back to me for our next appointment. It all didn't sit right with me and since I was waiting on receiving one last piece of information anyway, I decided the next day to just pick up my documents and say the hell with it. I called to make sure I could come in later in the day to get them. I was assured they would be waiting for me. I got there, and told them who I had worked with. They said they weren't sure who I was talking about. I gave them my information, and they started looking through files. Nothing. I repeated her name and the guy went to look in her office. Also nothing. He told me she had left early and he would try to give her a call to find out what she did with everything. They did not have a phone number for her. What?? Right. So I told them I was not leaving without my paperwork and they better find it. Finally another woman came out and gave me a rather patronizing attitude asking me why I was not happy. Oh I don't know, maybe because this whole situation is ridiculous? Anyway, finally, she was able to find them in the 'hold file.' She handed me the envelope and as I was walking out the door she said Wait, so I turn around and she was like I need to make sure you aren't taking any of OUR things with you. Whatever, she rifled through everything and I took it again and walked out, never to return. I'll be using turbo tax to file instead, for a total of $72 for my couple of extra situations than I usually have. read more

Horrible experience. It was like trauma. The official who dealt with us "Helen Tang" had horrible English. Most of the time she didn't knew what she was asking like " how much you pay for your car" I said msrp of my car like total price of my car ? She said no. I said monthly payment she said no. I asked the down payment then? She said No. Long story short she didnt knew at all what she was looking for or doing. Her computer was acting up and software couldn't let her proceed with the app and she kept whinning about it with us. I doubt she has any experience doing this before and company is responsible for putting their customer through such experience. I strongly recommend people to avoid the place. read more

I am posting my H&R Block review based on the experiences of my husband and I submitting our 2019 tax return less than a week ago (some time after the covid19 situation started). Less than 7 days ago, my husband and I went to the H&R Block location in Silver Spring Maryland, which is a close walking distance to the Silver Spring metro station. The employees we interacted with social distance wise were very polite and helped us through the process of submitting our 2019 tax return. One of the employees then called us via a cell phone in a timely manner after our initial visit to confirm the tax filing fee and he helped my husband and I through that process to ensure that the tax return fee was paid, he helped us complete the final steps on what was required to confim the complete processing of our 2019 tax return and be well on our way to receive our 2020 money stimulus checks. This H&R Block location is good to go to if you want good customer service and convenient proximity to public transportation walking distance wise. read more

Very shockingly unhelpful and unprofessional. After paying for the online service I walked in with a question. I Was immediately met with rudeness by an employee. When the receptionist (who witnessed the rude interaction) offered to get the manager, a Ms. Plummer, I agreed. After she left, I could hear this Ms. Plummer cursing and screaming in the back about "having to do everyone's job". The receptionist came back and informed me Ms. Plummer would not be seeing me. I paid a significant amount to this company, yet this location never even bothered to ask my name. I was left standing in the waiting area with no suggestion on their end but that I leave. read more

Rita O'Neil is extremely rude and unprofessional. If you make an appointment at this location do not meet with her. Instead of presenting herself as a knowledgeable tax professional and someone that can assist you, she seems more intent on pointing out things to you that are inconsequential to the process. I walked out of my appointment with her, paying exorbitant fees to H&R Block for one of their unprofessional staff to be rude to me is not my idea of money well spent. read more

My husband and I made an appointment using the online appointment tool. When we arrived we were greeted by the reception, told the person we were meeting was with a client and wouldn't be long. 15 minutes later I asked if the person would be much longer, and was told that since we had waited so long already someone else would see us instead. Not ideal, but we figured at least this person could give us a good quote. This person spoke severely broken English and we couldn't understand anything. On top of that we were quoted double what we paid another person (different company) last year without being given a reason for the high cost. Then we were told because of one our circumstances we would have to file a difficult and expense form... something that wasn't difficult, nor expensive last year. We completely wasted our time, and did not receive the service we expected. We left and have no intentions of returning. H&R Block may have nice commercials, but that's all they are... advertising. read more

Very unprofessional. I needed my taxes done in a hurry for educational purposes. First, my appointment started late. Second, the preparer told me that I asked too many questions. Really? I am supposed to ask questions. Third, they don't tell you fees upfront! I also handed a coupon to my preparer for 1st time clients BEFORE we started. After my $400 fees, I was told I couldn't use it because I opted for direct deposit. Nowhere on coupon does it say that! Finally, I will never return. I can do them myself from now on or go to a real accountant for what they charge. read more
