The reason I am writing is that I want to help others to avoid mistake I did in dealing with this tax preparer. The only time I used Rosnthal service was my tax return 2015. I was self-employed and carried form 1095-misc with me. That time I knew nothing about taxes and completely relied on "professional" (very bad decision). But, hey, that is why you use a service! For the most part you trust a person who you believe has the right knowlege and can help you with tax. I asked her some questions, some of them out of curiosity, however her respond was always:" do not worry, I made it good for you". Well, ok, good is good. Overall on the federal level I got a refund (premium tax credit) but on state level I owed, so my gain was $500. At that time I thought at least I do not owe taxes, and everything that I owed to state I paid out of my return on federal level. Although I left home with a strange feeling considering my situation: filing status, dependent and income. I was having a feeling that I am eligible for better refund and no payments at all. Well, what did I know about real thing-taxes?! Nothing. So I just left. Recently I got a lovely letter from IRS stating that I owe them SELF-EMPLOYED taxes in the amount that was exceeding any possible numbers plus the interest that accrued from the date after filing deadline up until this September. I would say I never owed that much to IRS( again taking into consideration my situation). Of cause first thing I did I called her and respond was:" The reason you got this letter is that you owe self-employed taxes-just pay it". What????!Just pay it???! How about you explain me at first place that I owe more taxes on self-emloyment?! Well the good thing by now I got more into taxes and have an idea of what is taxed and how(thank you self-education!) So I took my return out and was shocked seing that my income from 1095 misc was reported as #7. Wages, salaris and so on on form 1040. Now I understand why I had self-employment taxes... When I asked hre about interest she said that it is my obligation to pay since I did not filed taxes quaterly for that year. Really?? I thought you choose to do so, whichever is more convinient to you. Since my income was not big, I was fine with paying taxes once a year. Plus on the back of the IRS papers they specifically told from what dates interest accrued and for what. So the thinks I am an idiot who can not read and she can tell me anything -I'll eat it. BE AWARE of this not only with her but double check and do your research if you not sure in something. After that conversation she never responded to me back. And it is obvious why. At least she signed my papers. I end up using other company for a second opinion and they were shocked from what they see she did. FIrst of all I was not eligible for Premium tax credit, howevere she missed out my EIC and ACTC. With all of that plus the fact that I had to return the refund back and pay self-employed tax- obviousely it should be filed correctly, I end up still getting money back in almost the same as I supposenly owed to IRS. I had a huge EIC credit and full amount for ACTC that covered all the taxes I owed after correction. What I found out: SHE is not looking out for you, she will not bother herself with doing extra work to apply for credits you are eligible and plus her always advice:"Just pay it!". If I just listened to her, I would loose a lot of money unnecessary. My friends and family member aslo suffered from her service and even have been audited. New CPA resolved audit with no loss, however she reccomended to just pay and do not ammend the taxes. I hope that IRS will knock her door if not did so yet and I would see how "just pay it" will work for her. Such people should not get the PTIN number to work for public. Do youself a favor -just run! AVOID.AVOID.AVOID P.S. I placed same review on google as well. My guess is the only good reviews coming from her friends and family members. read more

I almost never write Yelp reviews but really feel compelled to write this review to save someone the headache that I faced last year with Rosenthal. I usually do my own taxes but decided to use an accountant last year because of a few life events (got married, bought house, moved across states). I used Yelp and found Rosenthal because it had a full five star review. I met with Miki in February to give her all my documents and by the time April 15th came along, my state tax had still not been filed. I will just plainly lay out all the issues I encountered: - Miki did not seem to understand what deductions are. For one of my state taxes, she neither gave me itemized deductions (which was the correct one) or standard deductions. If i had not checked the numbers myself because they seemed so off, I would have paid thousands of dollars in extra state tax. Even more shocking, when I approached her about the overlooked deductions, she acted like she had no idea what i was talking about. She said her tax program wasn't allowing her to give me a deduction, that she had never heard of this deduction thing before, and had to call the state taxation office to ask. Of course, i was right. Deductions are SO basic that her ignorance leaves me speechless to this day, along with her reliance on a tax program instead of actual knowledge of tax law. - She tried to file my Virginia taxes with a negative income. She tried to file my VA taxes 2 times but got rejected by the state both times. At this point, it was close to April 15th. I had had enough and asked her to give me a copy of everything she had done up to this point and i would just do it myself. When I picked up the VA tax forms that she had tried to file, i saw that she had tried to file it with negative income. I am being 100% serious here. How she thought this was correct or why she couldn't figure out why VA was rejecting this filing is again, baffling. - She gave me someone else's tax returns. She printed some of my old returns and gave them to me at one point. On the back was printed someone else's tax returns, full with this person's name, social security number, income, address, and everything else you can imagine. This may be an honest mistake but given the whole range of other careless mistakes she made on my returns (I haven't listed all of them here), I have to assume this is a part of a wider problem. I was emailing/talking to her a few times every week to point out mistakes on my returns. What infuriated me was that each time I did, I could sense no regret, no shame, no apology. Just annoyance that I'm bothering her yet again. Eventually, I took all the documents from her and had to find another accountant. The other accountant was shocked at the quality of the work on the tax returns. Eventually, even with all my checking, the next accountant found mistakes in all 3 of my filings (federal and two states). I had to file amended returns and didn't get everything settled until well into Summer. Using Rosenthal was my biggest regret of 2016 by far. It would have been easier to do it myself (it's honestly not that complicated!). Instead, I paid her hundreds of dollars to cause more trouble for myself and then had to pay a second accountant to fix her mistakes. I honestly do not know where all the good reviews for her come from. I hesitated for along time to write this review because just remembering the experience angers me. But it's tax season again and I want to prevent anyone I can from my fate. I can only assume that the 5 star reviews are from family/friends or from people who have never bothered to check their returns before signing. If you are one of the latter, I urge you check your past returns. You could be leaving thousands of dollars on the table. I would give 0 stars if I could. It is shocking to me and to every accountant I have spoken to how Rosenthal is still in business. I am not talking complicated taxes here. This was basic basic stuff. read more

I came here when I first started my business to get some initial tax advice. She has a home business, which is perfectly fine, except she has two dogs running around and this was not at all professional. Also, in the middle of the appointment, she picked up a personal call. I finished with all l my questions in less than one hour and she charged me for the whole hour. When I asked her if she could just charge me for 1/2 hour, she said that her system is not set up that way, it's a franchise. When I went home, I couldn't find any evidence of a franchise. To top it off, her quote for a tax preparation for 2016 was $550 more than 3 times what I was quoted with other accountants. read more
