We have been very pleased with H&S in the past. They did roof repairs for years, put in new gutters and finally a new roof. The gutter installation was a great experience. But now we are having problems with the company responding to our inquiries about problems with the flashing. Originally it was done poorly. It took months for them to call me back, get someone to look at and to "repair". Six months later this is what it looks like (see below). I had a contractor look who told me that despite H&S normally excellent work this was bad. All I want is someone to come fix it. But no one will call me back (same as right after I paid for the roof). Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this company at all. read more

I'm a former contractor myself, so I am always skeptical when a salesperson is sent to look at a potential repair to address a single leak, especially when they charge $89 for an estimate. In this case their salesman Billy showed up on time (!) and advised that while there is evidence of minor hail damage that might support an insurance claim, the only current problem is a single nail-pop. He patched and repaired that while he was on the roof, taking pictures of the before and after. At no extra cost over the original $89, no less! He did suggest that we have a maintenance check done, and showed me where there is pollen getting under some of the flashing that might become an issue later, and quoted this at $375. A week later the repair techs arrived, again ON TIME, and were professional and friendly, completing the work and providing me with photos of the other locations they had repaired. They did not change their billing, and we gladly paid the $375. In this world where every roofer is angling for a sale and keeps a public adjuster on staff just to argue with insurance companies, an honest roofer with great pricing is a gold nugget among the rocks. I'll be calling again when/as needed. read more

They Had been a trusted provider since 2004 but as I recently learned when cleaning my gutters not only was the contract from October, 2020 not completed according to our contract specifications but I found areas that did not need repair to now have gaps in screening. H&S rebuilt the roof of our house. They, as the supposed expert in this field, neglected to tell us that the repairs they suggested, changed the structure of the roof (trusses to stick built), and the implications this would have for the load of the roof. They created two load bearing walls in our house, then got their engineer to say that it was structurally sound. Their engineer was very unwilling to answer my questions, in person or via email. When asked directly three times if he did load calculations, he refused to say yes. Or no. Just vague information at an attempt to confuse me. We hired two other engineers, who both stated their engineer was completely wrong and that their engineer must not care about his license. The girder under the house was not built to support the load they created with their repairs. The job passed the city inspection, but only because they submitted their engineer report, which the city had no choice but to take as correct. The city was not allowed to take the other engineer reports into consideration. We are reporting their engineer to his licensing board. H&S falls back on "our engineer said it is fine" and refuses to take responsibility for their incompetence, even when shown proof that their engineer is wrong. Bill stated the impartial engineer we hired has a history of "enforcing the rules too much". Just unbelievable. We have to redo 13 THOUSAND dollars of work. And they stated they will put us into collections if we do not pay their bill. Oh, they are offering 5% off for our inconvenience of having to redo their 13k job. Two of their employees, Craig and Bill, said this job was done horribly and they would install trusses if they could go back. However, Ned, the president, refuses to take financial responsibility for his employees' incompetence. Stay far away. They are incompetent and unethical. Maybe they can install some shingles but that's about it. Every single person that has walked into our house has stated "wow what a mess" when looking at their work. Without us even saying anything. No doubt they will reply to this review and state that they did what our contract said they would do. And yes they technically did. They will just neglect to say that what they, as the supposed "expert" proposed in their contract, changed the structure of the house and made it structurally unsound. Without a word to us about the repercussions of their "expert opinion". We are now paying another 13k to redo their work. read more

As native Charlottean I decided on H & S Roofing over a national roofing company based on their longevity in the Charlotte market. Initially everything seemed to be going well when I met with one of their sales people to choose a roofing shingle type, brand, and color. Unfortunately that was the only time I interacted with an H & S representative in person. The roofers showed up on time to do the work and the noise level was tolerable and did not disturb me while I worked from home. After the roof was installed, I did a visual inspection and noticed a couple of issues I then pointed out to the roofers. The shingles around one the windows had a sloppy appearance and and and an edge shingle was missing from the top roof. I pointed the issues out to the roofers and they corrected them on the spot. I ask the roofers if a supervisor was available to speak to about these issues but no one was available so I sent pictures to H & S. I called and ask about a post roof installation inspections and I was told by someone they lived near me and can do an inspection on their way home. No one showed up to do the inspection. The first rain I checked inside my house and fortunately there no leaks but nails had washed off the roof and I ran over one that punched one of my car tires. I continued to find nails when I did yard work. One day we had high winds and one of shingles fell from the roof. I contacted H & S again and I was told someone would contact me to inspect the roof, no one has contacted me and that has been over six months ago. I had the roof installed a year ago and it is paid for but I am very disappointed with H & S's customer service. read more

I would give zero stars, if I could. We hired H & S to install new brackets on our gutters around our entire house-- we were told they also should have been screwed in rather than nailed, and they would do that, too. They came, "did it", I paid and they left. Only, they did not do it. My husband got up on the roof to blow leaves and NOT ONE new bracket had been installed. The assumption that I have made in regards to this is they had no idea that I am married to someone who still blows his own leaves and cleans his own gutters and thought that we would never know the work was not done. I had gutter guards put on my 2 story colonial home by H & S Roofing and almost immediately (within 2 weeks / first rain) had issues. One of the gutters began draining rain water toward the house, which it had never did before they installed the guards on my home. I called the office and a service personal came out quickly to address my concern. He stuffed chalking everywhere, but did not fix the problem. The gutter guard was angled inward, which caused the rain water to run toward the house, not away. When I pointed out the obvious issue, he began bending and manipulating the gutter on the house, which I thought might get torn off. Since the guard angle did not change from his strong arm attempts, he then told me if rain water continues to run toward the house I will have to pay to have a new gutter installed. When I explained that the gutters and roof were only 1.5 years old that fact did not change the service man's opinion. After he left that gutter guard was removed and no more water flow issue with that gutter. Now approximately 1 year later water is running over the sides of all of our the gutters (away from the house / thank goodness) except for the gutter the guard was removed. I believe the gutter guards did not do the job they were supposed to do because all of my gutters (except the one gutter without a guard) are now obviously clogged. I called the office and was told that I would have to wait about 5 weeks before they could come out and address my concerns. But most importantly, I have to pay $75.00 upfront to get on their waiting list. When asked if I would have any consideration since these guards were just installed last year, she quickly replied NO! I feel strongly that this company does not care after they have been paid and are selling a guard system that does NOT work! The guard was supposed to prevent leafs from getting caught and clogging the gutters. I do not believe these guards block anything except maybe large tree limbs. Extremely disappointed with this company's lack of concern and poor workmanship. If you want to waste your money and be mistreated, then this company is for you! Otherwise keep it moving! I have had a very different experience than the other reviewers. I have used them for 25 years and have a slate roof. These roofs are real nice to have but can get damaged easily by someone walking on it wrong. I am nervous about anyone up there but have always been pleased at the workmanship and repairs done by H & S. They came highly recommended when I was searching for someone when we bought a house with a slate roof. They have chased leaks which is art and science and put a new section of slate roofing where there was asphalt shingles. read more

After a heavy rain I noticed a stain in my ceiling. Called H&S on neighbor's recommendation and an H&S inspector came to my house and diagnosed my problem. Since I have an old house I was afraid he would say I needed a new roof but he said my roof was fine but I needed a patch and new gaskets around three venting pipes. When asked if H&S could repair a fallen gutter downspout he said no problem. After several weeks the work was done and the total cost was less than $400. read more

Called H&S for a leak in my roof. My phone call was answered by a lady (not a recording) who was able to schedule an estimate the next day. Estimator arrived, found the hole causing the problem and fixed the problem using a small patch. He also walked the roof looking for other possible problems. Found nothing! The entire visit took less than 30 minutes. Needless to say I am one happy (and relieved) customer. read more

Professional, on time, neat and good workmanship. I have used these guys twice already for roof repairs. A tree from the woods on my property landed on the roof and damaged my gutter last year. They worked with me, and fixed it in a timely fashion. Cannot tell any difference from the original gutter that was installed. Its a small job, but they were great about it. Another tree fell on my roof from neighbors property and did some serious damage (I learned in SC that its an act of god and they are not responsible) WTH??? Again, they took the job as it was relatively small, and did the work. This one was an emergency as I had 2 holes in the roof and water was coming in when it rained. They knew I was in a bind to get it fixed and they were very fair about the price and timing to complete the work. read more

Very good experience with H&S. Had them replace my roof last year, June 2017. I was on the roof this week looking at gutters and notice some of my plastic gutter guards were missing. Called them up and they came out the same day and put new ones on. No questions asked. read more

They took months before starting on a simple downspout replacement job and then their work turned out unprofessional. I had to call them back to fix it and then they charged me for that also. They sent me an invoice for all the work and I emailed Mary asking for an explanation and she did not repspond and one month later, I receive another invoice with interest added on. I had a leaking roof from the storm over the weekend. Called H&S because of their high BBB review. It was right on target. Customer service got me booked and had an estimator come to see me promptly. He identified the problem area created by a previous contractor in two areas and fixed them on the spot. I am beyond happy with response and service here, this is one fine old line company and their service levels and friendly service folks prove that out. read more
