There is a New Queen of Korean Supermarkets in Austin. You are in Raw Ingredient Paradise! Go Out There and Cook Up a Storm! * * * It should be obvious that Samuel C. is a man who loves restaurants. It is less obvious but Samuel C. is a man who also adores grocery stores. Some people are happiest in a bar. I am happiest shopping for groceries. It does not hurt that Austin is an incredible grocery town. We have H E B which is one of the best normal American-style supermarkets anywhere. We have Central Market. We have the Whole Foods Mothership. We have Fiesta for Mexican/Central American. (Their made-in-house ingredients are as good as it gets.) We have six zillion good Indian grocery stores. We have Asahi. We have Phoenecia. We have Antonelli's. We have a ton of good East Asian and Vietnamese marts. But as good as these places are, for Korean, HMart is the queen. They have huge amounts of fresh seafood and shellfish including rare items you don't see anywhere else. Giant Conch, anybody? They have every part of the pig and the cow you can think of. They have a huge selection of vegetables including all sorts of exotic greens - and it is fresh fresh fresh and fresh. (The freshness of produce is an issue at Fiesta or at the Mom-and-Pop Asians.) They have a giant stand with eighteen different flavors of fresh fishballs. (I was already in love before I saw the fishball place. When I saw the fishballs, it was like all my dreams came true.) They have a broad selection of kimchee and Korean pre-mades, including a whole section of 1000-year old kimchee for uncompromising types. They have enough Korean junk food to throw thirty eight different parties with no repeats - and you won't repeat on the dumplings you can serve either. When I came to check the place out, I had my list of "Let's see if they have this, Let's see if they have that." They had all that beyond my wildest dreams, They also had other useful things I wasn't even remotely expecting. I left with a perfectly sized set of massage slippers and a perfectly shaped buckwheat pillow. There was a huge selection of sizes and shapes for both of these. If I ever need more kitchen stuff, HMart is likely to be my first place of call. The only thing I couldn't find was cookbooks. But most Koreans already know how to cook what they want to cook - Or the kids look up a recipe on the internet. So this is not a huge loss. * * * Overall, a splendorific addition to the all-star cast of super-supermarkets which is one of the blessings of living in Austin. Expect Samuel C. to do a lot of Korean cooking in the future. ***************************** Addendum to Original Review: I wrote the original review after I had finished shopping. Since then I have cooked with and eaten what I bought. The glowing review I initially wrote is an UNDER-statement. The food is even better than I originally suggested. The fishballs were the finest I have ever had anywhere. The oyster mushrooms had far more mushroom taste than any Asian mushrooms I have bought from any other purveyor. The side dishes from Jinga were addictive. Don't just check out HMart as a curiosity. Bring your shopping bag and do some cooking. There are treats to be had here. read more

If you are an American who has been privileged enough to visit an authentic Eastern Supermarket then you already know what I am about to say. However, if you have yet to travel East then you should be warned that Easterners, for whatever reason, fancy their aisles, for whatever reason, a little closer together. Maybe for a more intimate shopping, grocery cart experience I DON'T KNOW. For example and I don't know the measurements of hand but say American aisles are 6 feet apart. H Mart has their aisles 4 feet apart. Now, I do not know why this is the case, NOR do I know if this is even a thing but FOR WHATEVER reason the aisles seemed closer together which caused for so internal anxiety. We were able to pick up everything we needed; vegetables, pork, snacks, saki cups. The answer to your question is, yes, they do have a Ramen section. However, if you are going to H Mart to find that unique ramen you saw on Instagram you will be disappointed to know that you will not find it here. I repeat YOU WILL NOT FIND YOUR INSTA' RAMEN HERE. While you might be able to find your unique ramen at another store you will not be able to find it here. We have been dying to get up here since it opened, and we have missed out...This place is really cool. Food court is a big attraction as well..The variety of items in the aisles is endless. We picked up a few odds and ends. Seafood dept was very impressive with a huge selection of things that swim. Being that we are headed out of town, I didnt get a chance to pick up anything to actually cook, but I will be back to get some of the marinated meats they offer, and I did eye myself some Kobe beef as well. read more

I wish our H Mart in Michigan in Troy was this size, this is a one stop Korean shop. The food court is a nice variety of pastries, sushi, Korean tacos, Chinese Korean fusion, Korean beef, Korean tofu and noodles, Korean fried chicken, Korean mixed foods and beers and other libations. We ordered some soon dubu with kimchi and dok Bokki from the tofu house, drumsticks from donkey Mo's, corn queso and kimchi tators from E street, kimchi kimbap, veggie mandoo and rice balls from mix, almond croissant, pain au chocolat and chocolate danish, coffee with hazelnut and a pomegranate ade from tous les jours. Mexican sparkling water and lone star beer for a good price at let em talk. The soo dubu, mandoo, kimchi bibimbap and dok Bokki were my favorite. The Korean drumsticks were full sized, not the small wing sized we expected and the 3rd level was quite spicy for my FIL. The queso and the kimchi tators with cauliflower were okay, not special. There isn't anything this Korean market sells, if you cans find it then no one wants it and or it doesn't exist. Banchans galore and every imaginable kimchi available here. Quite an extensive rice cooking and cooking tools at hand. I liked the huge assortment of fish, meat, poultry and frozen meats available for every budget and every possible cooking or cuisine necessities. My boyfriend and I were in the mood to make Lumpia, Pancit, and Adobo since my dad made that all the time when I was little so we took our first trip to H Mart (basically a mini mall) and I literally felt like a kid in a candy store! There was so many thing available there - see my thoughts below. Grocery: The fruits and vegetables are so fresh and they have plenty of options to choose from - I mean PLENTY. They have aisles full of your noodles, rice and rice papers, aisle full of various types of Ramen noodles, aisle full of Korean candy, aisles full of drinks, aisles full of spices, you name it and I'm sure they have it. They also have your meat market there which was definitely interesting to see. Restaurant: Inside H Mart they have a food court that has Korean BBQ, Sushi and I believe one other restaurant. I haven't tried any of the food places yet but I'm definitely going to go back to try them. They also have a stage for a live band that comes and plays which I thought was really cool. Beauty: They have a "Face Shop" in there that has all of these face masks and the typical products that are used for K-Beauty such as masks, cleansers, exfoliators, toners, moisturizers and oils and they all seem decently priced. I'm into all things beauty so I loved that I was able to find some stuff there. They also have a section to get massages, etc. Bakery: The bakery is sooooo good! I had to try some of their coffee and croissants. There's so many different croissants, breads and pastries to choose from. You grab a tray and take as many things you want and then bring it to the cashier and she bags it for you. Overall, this was quite the experience and I highly recommend! This place is so amazing! On the grocery side the produce, meat, and seafood sections are exceptionally clean and fresh. The most bountiful selection of items I've ever seen at any grocery store. I am docking one star only from my personal disappointment that I can not find any ube products or many Filipino products in this massive store. Just a handful of items like Lumpia wrappers, banana sauce, jarred halo halo fruit, and some seasonings. Otherwise I'm especially thrilled by the bakery on the food court side that has the Asian fresh strawberry cake! I haven't tried it yet, but it's the only place in Austin that I've found that has it. The food court seems to be heavily Korean influenced but I'm not complaining. Great variety and nice clean open area to sit. Not only was the clientele eclectic, so were the food choices. There was amazing produce, Ramen Selection, Froze food, Fresh seafood, at prices that make sense for the regular guy. Yes there were all sorts of regular guys and gals shopping, and politely enjoying the experience as much as I was. Maybe we all should visit an H Mart more often to see how well we can live together. This place is huge! So many things to look at and try! We go here to get the amazingly thin sliced beef for bulgogi and sukiyaki. They have great cabbage. I have found several snacks that my grandma keeps in her cabinet for visitors and it's nice to have them in my own home. We have gone to the food court many times and enjoyed the different eateries, live music and cheap beer! It's so big and crazy to navigate because it is always so busy in there. I've tried finding staff to assist me w locating items but they're never around. However, the team in the meat markets are awesome and super helpful!! read more

The live music needs to go. Whoever was there on 2/18 cleared the food court out. Everyone in the crowd looked annoyed and repulsed. The guy was twerking, acting like he was spinning on a stripper pole and running fake flowers all over his body. We take our kids here for the setting, the food, and the upbeat kpop music they play. Most of the bad reviews consist of 1) complaints of crowds which is a positive sign and 2) moot comparisons to asian grocers in other states. As a San Antonian and lover of both cities, I am sooo thankful for this Hmart! My love is directed at their wide selection of fresh, marinated meats, ready for the grill! Galbi, LA galbi, bulgogi chicken and pork and beef, pork belly, brisket... it's all there and sold between $3.99 and $9.99 a pound! They have everything you need to have Kbbq night or shabu shabu/hot pot. They have an entire freezer filled with fish balls! The food court has a great selection of korean, japanese, chinese, and asian fusion. The decor is pretty awesome for an Hmart in the heart of Texas. Everything is Texas themed. Remember Austin going berserko when Trader Joe's opened their first store here? Well, déjà vu with this new Hmart. You know it's a foodie town when people go cray over a supermarket opening. And right offhand, I really didn't notice anything I couldn't get at MT or Hana Market, but then again, I was strolling around casually & not looking for anything specific either. I've never been to an Hmart before, but this one seems pretty huge, precisely organized, and if you know someone who reads Korean, bring them along. But I think the draw here for Austin Yelpers will be its "Market Eatery": A separate food court, maybe a little less elegant than Fareground One Eleven, but still with booze & a half-dozen food venues. All dolsot ready for IG posing. Especially if you think Korean fried chicken is the new ramen, because that particular line was just nuts. The Anglo couple doing live country & western tunes caught most of us by surprise, and you have to wonder what else is being planned for Austin. But whatever they do - and maybe after a little settling-in time - this new Hmart should be a welcome addition to the happy foodie brethren. read more

H Mart Austin NOT allowing LICENSED individuals (LTC holders) to carry concealed: I just noticed they don't want anyone with licensed conceal carry individuals from shopping at H Mart. Very naive (and uneducated) thinking that bad guys with firearms will deter away because it says "no guns" when in fact places like this could become potential (easy) target by them. I hope they change their mind on this, and allow licensed individuals to carry their firearms concealed while shopping at this location. If not, my family members will do our best to avoid H Mart N. Austin. This is TEXAS H Mart!! If they have armed security guard ALL TIMES I understand, but that's not the case here. Shoppers, we do have options in Austin. There are at least two good Asian markets in Austin (On Palmer and Lamar Blvd). About (some) meat and seafood products at H Mart Austin: Some of their meat products weren't fresh at all -- especially packaged pork products. It smelled SO BAD that I had to throw it away the day I bought it. Now we will be buying meat from HEB across the street. Majority (not all) of their seafood products are sourced from Thailand where the industry is tainted by slavery and inhumane treatment of their workers. The place was still packed, but it was Saturday so we were expecting it. Lots of interesting things all around the store. The only section we didn't really go through was the produce because it was just insanely busy and would have taken just too long. We will definitely be returning to get a good look at all that section has to offer. Very interested in their chili offerings. The seafood looked very fresh and there was a wide variety. The meat did also, and there were several tasting stations set up and the food all smelled wonderful. The food hall, as I'm calling it, was extremely busy as well. There were long lines for nearly every food location, but the korean fried chicken line was by far the longest. Definitely want to come back and try that place once the crowds settle down. We were able to get some food in the form of korean bbq tacos, and they were tasty. We got all three, steak, chicken and pork. Final Summary: After 4-5 trips since this Hmart opened, I can say that its just as great as the first time. The grand opening crowd certainly simmered down. And now the usual heavier times/patterns are expected. [Pro tips] -We're used to packing a cooler in the trunk for Hmart trips. I'd highly recommend you invest in a cooler/cooler bag. This will allow you to make the trip worth it by finishing up shopping and having time to peruse/eat at the market. -Sign up for the Hmart smart card. You earn points. They have some scanner underneath the card swipe machine for it. -Apparently they give out these decent large square "tray-plates" for every $30 you spend. But max you can get only 3. (So spend $90= 3 trays max for you). [Main store- Grocer] Back meat section with the staff, we continue to make 1-2 lb orders of: 1.Marinated beef bulgogi 2.Marinated beef ribeye (hot) 3.Marinated beef/sliced short ribs *Its been terrific to make at home again. The KBBQ game in Austin is just not there yet, and so this is even better. Cooler comes in for these babies. [Teas/coffee] -We really enjoy the diverse selections. There is a 'green tea brown rice' box that is extremely good. Taste like the one from Kome. Don't miss out on this section. [Frozen] -The thought of an Asian Frozen section used to give me the shivers. But, I highly enjoyed the "earl grey frozen mochi." Tasted more "fresh/better" than restaurant, no joke. -If I had to make the trip worth with frozen stuff I'd stock up on: Mochi, the shu mai, and some of the dumping/egg rolls. H Mart is always a supermarket staple for Asian ingredients. Most H Marts are set up with a similar layout, and this one is no exception. This location doesn't have the biggest produce selection and that area does feel a bit cramped. The aisles are also a bit small and can get congested with shopping carts. They have a decent selection of fresh seafood and a large selection of fresh meat. The pricing is slightly higher for some items (than other Asian supermarkets), but the store itself is clean and orderly. read more

I'm a huge fan of H-Mart. It's a great one-stop shop for those who hate shopping. They have a large variety of ingredients from all over. Feel like making Indian, Korean, Thai, or other ethnic cuisines? They've got you covered! The staff here are super nice and helpful. I come here for fresh produce, baked goods, and snacks. Cannot forget the snacks. My only complaint is the quality of their fish. I'm not sure how to put it, but lets just leave it at that. Otherwise, I'm pleased with the overall experience and I love the diversity here. Off-topic: They sell the BTS coffee & BT21 toilet rolls. Cannot confirm the quality of the TP as I've never used it before but they also had Hello Kitty toilet paper rolls at one point too. I just found it amusing and cute. H-Mart is connected to a bunch of other shops and food court which makes it super convenient to pick up beauty products, fresh baked good, delicious Korean cuisines, get a haircut or treat yourself with a fancy Japanese bidet. We saw lots of fruits and vegetables we didn't know existed and we'll try some in future visits. The main reason we came was to check out the food court, most of them are barely up and running and some not.....we'll come back in a month or two to let them get on their feet. Tous Les Jours was up and cranking out baked goods and coffee drinks, the baked goods were tasty like their original location, they just need more help. We ordered an iced coffee that came out hot......oh well...my cappucino was as ordered and delicious. The croquet was the star, they were out of the curry one, so i got the regular and it did not disappoint. They don't offer frozen blended coffee drinks at this location. Hmart is the largest, cleanest and most organized Korean market you will find in town. Period. Their prices are very competitive in some departments and others not so much .. so be smart and shop with your wits here! I love their exotic produce and the fact that they sell stuff like durian, Chinese herbs, Korean fruits etc. at a reasonable price. Most importantly their produce is usually very fresh. They have a seafood/poultry section with amazing cuts of meat and fresh seafood. They even have trays of fresh sashimi that you can take home and enjoy at good prices. The selection of things they have here is very wide and I love how everything makes sense as you walk through the store. It's kind of like IKEA how they have a certain rhythm that they walk you through a path and everything is in order of what you need. You start out in produce and then move on to hardware/kitchenware. From there you go into the seafood and meat section where you will also meet the aisles of instant foods like rice, ramen, canned goods, soup bases, red pepper and miso pastes etc. After that you will see the preprepared Korean side dishes along with frozen foods like dumplings, fishcakes, ricecakes, frozen seafood, steamed buns etc. At the end of the frozen aisle you will find desserts like mochi icecream, popsicles, and pints of icecream that are normally and specially flavored - example being vanilla vs black sesame/ube. You will also find Asian medicines at the checkout counters where you will also find snacks. There is so much here that you usually won't be able to see everything at once and if you wonder "do they have ...?" if it's Asian then I would say you have a pretty good chance that they do. Their customer service counter is legit. They help you with things you might be looking for and they also handle returns for you. This is not your typical Asian market so if you want to be impressed by the way an Asian market runs things then this is your best bet in the Austin area Their food court design is so sleek and even doubles as a venue for events but the restaurants are still trying to figure things out so I would be ready to wait in a looooong line for now. Also they have run out of food or closed early due to lack of preparation so that's another thing to keep in mind before you make the trek out to eat here. Maybe come early? This is by far the best Asian market in Austin. Thank goodness it is a bit north and away from all the central traffic. Mostly, I come here for the bakery, Tous Les Jours. I went for the fourth time today, and I try to go with my spouse (who shares). It's delicious every time! And I've tried something new each time. My favorite is the curry croquet. How does it stay so crispy yet gently crumble in my mouth?!? I do love the market, too, though. I love the fresh veggies, and huge selections of everything else: snacks, drinks and meats. Oh! And the samples are great! It helps for trying to decide what to buy, especially when I can't always read the package. Today, I noticed a cute store behind the eatery. It has a bunch of colorful little items, like squishy food dolls, plushies, stickers, and other random stuff. I plan to return later for cutesy stationary and gifts. read more

As far as Korean grocery stores go, H-Mart is as good as it gets. It was rumored that H-Mart would be coming since I first moved here (back in 2012), and I can't tell you how happy I am that it's finally here. Unlike a lot of unhappy people, I waited a few weeks after the initial opening because I knew it would be crazy. As a matter of fact, I pulled in a couple days after they opened and pulled a U-turn after I saw the line out the door. Why H-Mart? Most people will talk about the food court, which is nice. I will definitely get around to exploring the different food options, but I plan on giving them a few months to catch their stride before I do a review on their food court. The grocery section was what I was really waiting for. They have a great selection of meats (especially for Korean BBQ), seafood, Kimchi, and whatever other things you might be looking for. I am finally writing this review after many visits here. I am so glad this place is so close to home. I don't have to buy so much each time. Only what I want to eat that day. When we first went the first week of opening it was pretty crazy. It was hard enough to walk around, so imagine pushing a shopping cart and stroller. It was a mad house. Things have since died down some, but don't get me wrong they are still busy. Produce is great and I love my tropical fruits. I have tried Rambutan, Longans, and Jackfruit. I am waiting for my favorite fruit to get there during season and that is Lychee. Seafood has a huge selection. There is lobster, live fluke, clams, shrimp, squid, and a huge selection of fish. I recently saw that they had offered live crawfish now as of my last visit today. Everything is fresh and they do offer sushi. I have gotten a tray of sashimi and it is pretty good. I love the meat section. The variety is outstanding. There are also marinated meat so you can just take home and cook yourself. So many different cuts of steak, pork, and chicken. There are also pre-sliced meet in the freezer for your convenience. Side dishes and kimchi galore. If you love Korean side dishes this is the place you have to come and check out. I didn't even know there were that many side dishes. They also have pre-made soups if you are too busy to cook. Food court is awesome. So many different places to eat. They are a little slow right now and have to work through their issues but I'm sure it will get better. Live music is a plus and $1 beers. There is also a bakery and shaved ice place. There are plenty of other shops like makeup and blinds shop. There will be others that will open soon. I really like this place, it is not like your typical HMart like Houston or Dallas. The long awaited Hmart, the palace of joy for Asian food lovers everywhere. It's finally here and this place is going to be a food mecca for a while. I will start off by saying whoever designed this place aesthetically gets major kudos. This Hmart makes other Hmarts look ghetto and that's saying something. This place is huge! Yet, it suffers from cramped aisles. The biggest downside of this store is the aisles barely fit 2 shopping carts wide, so good luck maneuvering around the store - I skipped exploration of certain aisles and backtracking to get stuff simply because I didn't think it'd be worth the hassle. It's not necessarily high foot traffic that caused this either - its just tight, period. But produce prices are great, though meat and some other products are higher in price than other Hmarts I've been to. Guess it doesn't really have much to compete with in austin currently though. Food court is hip and has a plethera of korean options. Many look interesting and hope to come back to eat here soon. Again, prices are a bit higher than in other hmarts but who knows, maybe the quality will be better too. Love how big the selections are here, staff is friendly despite big crowds, and produce is always fresh. ‍

You can find just about anything you need to cook up an Asian meal. You just have to know what you're looking for before you plan you start. Their seafood and produce selections are extensive, I love buying produce and fruits there. I do not recommend the food court, I've ate there a few times and had not been impressed. The bakery always looks inviting and delicious although I try to steer clear from that. read more

Good Korean food selection, I like to go to the food court to try different dishes. Keep in mind that is a supermarket that has international foods that you're probably not very used to but it's a fun place to discover new things you might love. read more

So very clean and nice layout. Some areas are tight but so much selection. Prices are great. And the seafood and meat Dept are wonderful for Asian style meats. Good selection of prepared food. When you can't go back overseas, have overseas come back to you.. and eat while you are there! HMart has many of the things I miss while traveling the world and I am pleased that it has made it to the Austin area. Sadly I am tardy on this review, but I am doing it now since they have been opened for a while. You can read all the other reviews about the fresh fish, the great Wagyu beef they have (my personal choice), and many other things, but my quick review is about EStreet Tacos. EStreet has a great Korean flavored twist on the Tex-Mex taco and I enjoy them very much when I want something "different" than the what else is offered in this vicinity of HMart. I have eaten the EStreet tacos and nachos and you cannot go wrong with either of them. Give them a try for a nice Korean flair. - the meat was tender - the fresca cheese was fresh - and it filled your stomach with portions and your taste buds with flavors read more

It's a unique market for Austin, but still a work in progress (no surprise, since I'm writing this less than a week after the grand opening). This megamarket's strong points are outstanding seafood, meat and produce departments, and specialties from Korea and the Asian world that are hard to impossible to find elsewhere within a 100-mile radius. The crowds have thinned a bit since opening day (you can actually find parking a reasonable distance from the store on weekdays), but it's a happening place. I hesitate to review the food court places since they still have to work out the kinks, but I'd strongly suggest to Tous les Jours, the excellent Korean/French bakery on site, that they improve their signage, put clear pricing by every item (since 80% of what's on offer isn't -- you have to ask), and work on the coffee bar. When I went, all they offered was regular coffee in paper cups (no espresso or cappuccino available, although espresso machines were obviously on-premises) and for God's sake, offer real milk, half and half and cream at the coffee bar instead of that God-awful Coffee-mate crap in pump bottles. read more

I've been to a lot of H Marts, but this one is by far the most superior. I'm impressed with the setup and extra details they've included! They have children's mini grocery arts, arcade center, huge food court, and tons of pre-made food options than any H mart I've been to! Absolutely stunning. I walked in knowing that H-Mart was different from other Asian grocery stores, but I greatly underestimated how stark that difference was. The produce section has the prettiest fruits and vegetables, the ramen aisle is packed with every flavor, and there's bottles upon bottles of sauces. I wandered around for about ten minutes, awed by the amount of food in the store, coming across the seafood section in the process. The fillets of fish there are so beautifully cut, and the crab legs are completely mesmerizing. I also came across the great number of restaurants in the store, along with the bakery. Although I've only been to the bakery, and a couple of the restaurants-all of which were great-I'm sure the rest of them are just as amazing. After going to H-mart more times than I can count, I've become more exposed to Asian food and culture. Even though this store is mostly for Korean, many other cuisines can be found in it-Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. This place opens up your eyes more to the world around you.
