There was one night that we drove by and happen to see the open sign was on when the Google hours showed it was suppose to be closed. I'm so happy we busted a u turn and was able to snag some items before they closed! We were their last customers. I was hoping to get some marinated salted oysters but they didn't have any. Instead they had marinated raw octopus which I was hesitate to grab but I am so glad I did! That was honestly one of the best items I tried there! It went really well with rice and I really enjoyed the chewy texture of the raw octopus. 5/5 ! Radish kimchi: 3/5 not the best radish kimchi I had but it was decent. It didn't keep well in the refrig for over 2 weeks and went bad. The radish was crunchy and crispy. It was sour and everything you expect in a kim chi radish. Marinated raw crabs: 5/5 it was really good as always! This item I always snag consistently when I come there to get banchan. I was really super this time that crab was super firey hot. not sure if they were just heavy handed on the red pepper flakes but damn it was hot. It definitely slow me down from eating it all. It's usually not that spicy but this batch was for some reason. Do I recommend this place? Yes homemade traditional Banchan and you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home. As a Korean who's spent many years in South Korea, I have high expectations for banchan. I never thought I'd say this about a place in Austin but the banchan here is the best I've had in the US (including LA!) and on par with banchan in South Korea. Try all of them at some point and if you're a health nut like me google the health benefits of some of the vegetables you may not be familiar with. Things like bellflower root and lotus root are superfoods! Their kimbap, beef broth and other prepared foods are delicious. The best part is that it all tastes homemade with real ingredients. They even do catering! If you like birria and/or ramen you need to try their gamjatang. Spicy, rich deep pork flavors. The big chunk of potato makes the flavors all meld together. This place is a hidden gem! They have a wide variety of Korean frozen foods that all look really interesting, thought I haven't tried any yet. I come for the KIMBAB! It's simple, fresh, and absolutely delicious! And it's affordable! It's become one of my go-to lunch spots. I usually grab two or three to get me through the day. Such a great hidden gem. They sell a bunch of homemade banchan like kimchi, stir fried fish cakes and anchovies, radish etc. But also pre-made food like pumpkin porridge, beef radish soup, LA galbi, bulgogi, dumplings, just so much! They even sell shikhye which is a delicious sweet rice drink and spicy chicken feet! The prices are also pretty stellar in my opinion. I bought a few things to try: small kimchi $2.99, small bulgogi $10, stir fried anchovies $4.99, fresh kimchi $18.99 (this one was a big box lol), chives kimchi $5.99. We loved EVERYTHING. Truly the best "store bought" kimchi in Austin. The regular kimchi is so incredibly fresh and not sour. My issue with banchan from HMart and other places is that they're too salty, taste older, or way too sweet. Everything we purchased tasted just perfect. An older gentleman rang us up and he was so incredibly friendly and kind. Definitely will return and regretting never coming here in our years in Austin! read more

Got bad food poisoning from their kimbap that was just sitting out on the counter. I assumed this was an ok practice until I got sick and looked it up... Such a basic food safety practice... this combined with the Reddit posts about their bad health scores from the food department make me hesitant to come back, even if the kimchi was good. read more

This is the only stand-alone store (not Hmart or groceries) that specializes in korean side dishes. Whoever is doing the preparation of these side dishes is doing an amazing job. This tastes as good as many of the places I buy side dishes from in South Korea. They have at least 50-100 types of side dishes and I'm SO thankful to Mom's taste since they don't skimp on adding good ingredients (unlike H-Mart which is all about the bottom line). Thanks to Mom's taste I was able to survive my korean food hunger pangs during the pandemic. I just wish they were open a little longer. My life in Austin would have been very difficult if there wasn't Mom's Taste. They carry a variety of Korean soups and side dishes that taste legit. Their food tastes better than those sold at Korean grocery stores, and also mostly cheaper. Sometimes they close early so make sure you check the hours before visiting. Tiny little store that sells a small variety of delicious Korean home made meals. I believe that during non covid years, they also act as a diner. Right now though, everything is in fridge/freezer containers. Highly recommend their spicy squid stir fry, their seafood tofu soup (perfect spice level), and their sikhye (sweet rice drink). I first discovered this place a few months ago when I was looking for Korean food after moving to Austin. This is now one of my favorite things in the city! Mom's Taste is a tiny mom-and-pop store run by an elderly Korean couple stocked with all sorts of delicious banchan (everything from your standard napa cabbage kimchi and anchovies to seasoned octopus, sesame leaves (!), dumplings, and more!). The marinated bulgogi is a great deal and makes for an easy weeknight dinner. If you don't see the items you want in the fridge, ask and they might be able to dig it up for you in the back. We stocked up like crazy for the pandemic. Their new (temporary) hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays (not Thursday/Friday) from 10am-5pm. A hidden little gem in Austin for Korean side dishes, soup bases, etc. I must preface that I'm not Korean, but have quite the palette for side dishes and often find myself most excited for those at a Korean restaurant. On top of that, I love a nice mom and pop shop where every dollar feels like it's contributing to a local family. That being said, this place receives a 4* from me. I got a spicy dried octopus and the black beans. The octopus's flavor is packed and quite savory, challenging my spice tolerance in a good way. However, ever the lover of the squid or octopus's elasticity, I may opt for the fresh seafood next time. The beans is what I am the most unimpressed with. I love this dish and am willing to spend $4 a box, again for beans. The dish was saltier and less chewy than my favorite rendition of it, often sold in H-Mart. May come again if it's on the way because I love Korean side dishes, but will not choose the beans. read more

This place is amazing! I'm not Korean but I travel to Seoul almost every year so when Covid hits and I can't go, my heart hurts. Some days I will be craving some authentic banchan but those store bought banchan is not authentic enough. Not even Hmart is good enough for me. I know what is authentic (and fresh) kimchi when I tasted one. If they are sour and overly salty then they are not fresh, been fermented too long..it's just the way it is. That's what all Korean restaurants in Austin give you, store bought kimchis. The last time I had a great one outside Seoul is at NYC but none in Austin until I move to Crestview area and found Mom's taste. I almost cried when I eat their kimchi at home, travel bug hits me again. They have variety of kimchi like regular cabbage kimchi (the one I got), whole cabbage one or cucumber kimchi. I also got spicy anchovies and spicy fish cake. I notice they have kongnamul muchim (spicy bean sprout) as well as pre marinated spicy pork or beef bulgogi, spicy chicken feet, korean pancake, pre made mandu and many more. Honestly until I can find a better one (well...took me 14 years of being in Austin), this is as authentic as you can get. Taste like you are sitting at Gwangjang market in Seoul. They require you to wear gloves (provided to you) and it's fine by me. Hand sanitizer is also available as well as contactless payment. As of today, they don't open on Wednesdays and Sundays. I'm so glad I discovered this place! There's so much great banchan here and it's nice to support a small local business like this one. The store is pretty tiny and it's just made up of several freezers and a checkout counter. Despite the size, there's so much variety here and they sell tons of banchan, marinated meat, soups, and homemade frozen dumplings. I've loved everything I tried here and I especially recommend the fish cakes, bean sprouts, and dried spicy squid. read more

Best kimchi in Austin hands down. There's banchan galore! It's a small mom and pop shop where the ajummas make hand crafted korean banchan super well. They have great prices and incredible side dishes as well as soups you can buy to go too. My personal favorites are the cucumber kimchi, napa kimchi and the stir fried fish cake. You'd think how can you tell kimchi is good, it stinks anyways. But here there's a depth of flavor, a cool crispness to it that you can tell has that mom's love element in the food. What is hard though is hopefully you know some korean as the side dishes aren't labeled that well but hey worst case, you can go be a bit adventurous and be thrilled still at the end. But by and large it is you see what you get, so just give it a try! read more

I'm honestly shocked more people don't know about Mom's Taste! I love coming here for pre-marinated bulgogi and banchan. The best part is you really do get a bang for your buck compared to grocery stores such as 99 Ranch or H-Mart. Everything tastes fresh and what I imagine a home cooked Korean meal to taste like. This place really isn't a grocery store. There are a few items that you can buy, but if I wanted groceries, I'd stop by Han Yang. Mom's Taste is a place to pick up prepared foods for putting together a meal at home; it's a Korean version of The Studio Kitchen. There are pre-marinated meats, prepared soups, and a large selection of Korean side dishes and pickled vegetables. In my opinion, this place makes the best Korean side dishes. It's a more traditional preparation, saltier and less sweet, than what you get at all the Korean restaurants in town. I wish the shop would carry more grocery items so I can make this a one stop shop. Consistency is a bit of an issue so check everything before you buy. Some items are written only in Korean, which can be fun for adventurous eaters. read more

We made 2 dinners and meal prepped 6 portions from that. There is still left overs. Im sure they'll have more of a selection on the weekend. We will be back. read more

This is the best place I've found in Austin to buy Korean food. Trust me. They have an excellent variety of main dishes, soups & stews, and banchan (side dishes). This is one of those instances where I don't really want to write a review because then I know this place will get busier and busier and sell out quicker but you know, IT'S FOR THE GOOD OF YELP that I write this review. Mom's Taste is off the chain, if you know what I mean. I really dig Korean food, and I also really dig not cooking some nights, so this is obviously like a dream come true. When you walk into this hidden store, you will immediately notice all the wonderful packaged food in the refrigerators to your right. Then you can pick whatever dishes or condiments you like, and imagine in your head the delicious feast that will soon appear on your kitchen table at home. And, you won't break the bank. Oh yes, I got enough pork bulgogi for 3-4 people, plus eggs soaked in soy sauce, beans, sprouts... all for $20! It's fabulous I tell you, FABULOUS. And when I got home it took me less than ten minutes to get everything on the table. And it was all DELICIOUS. I will definitely be back. This place is too good to pass up... and I obviously have to try all the other food they have that I didn't mention, duh. read more

Moving from the mecca of Korean food (aka LA, CA) to Austin, TX made me worry whether I would have to give up Korean food (or any Asian for that matter). Cooking Korean food is not an option because for whatever reason, I find Korean cooking to be very challenging (yet I can cook most other ethnic dishes). So I always leave Korean cooking to the "experts". I even considered having Korean food FedEx'd to me from LA but luckily, through fellow Yelpers, I found Mom's Taste. Yes, it's a great place to pick up banchan, as well as soups & pre-marinated beef and spicy pork. The flavors are spot-on and are geared towards Korean tastebuds because their spicy dishes are really spicy (such as dok-bok-gee & yuk-gae-jang). The prices aren't too bad either - ranging from $3-$10 depending on the size and what you buy (most fall in the $5 range). I usually pick up several dishes for the entire week - just make rice and it's easy Korean meal at home. Usually 3-4 different packages/types get me through the week. And on a budget, this is great since it's about $3-4 per meal. They also carry Korean cup-ramen, rice, as well as some sauces. I didn't check the price but I'd imagine they would be bit more expensive than the market just down the street. Thank goodness for this place because I would've seriously considered having Korean food FedEx'd from LA. read more
